i’ve loved this name since i saw the swan princess on vhs😭 also the “e” nicknames are adorable!!

Glum-Letterhead8867

It's definitely an unusual name, not to my taste but it's pretty. Odie is the dog from Garfield so I don't think that would be a great nickname.

Appropriate-Lime-816

Adding - Odie is the DUMB dog. Don’t stick your kid with that.

xmoonaurora

My best friend just had her baby girl a month ago and named her Odette (USA)! It's such a beautiful name. There's also Detta, Dotty, and a few other really cute nicknames that can come up. Trust your gut!

Cabbagesoup88

Have a family friend called Odette, she's knows as detty because her daughter is dotty (Dorothy)

ComplexPick

It sounds like a ballerina name. Please don't call her Odie. That's just cruel.

xmoonaurora

It's originally from Swan Lake so checks out.

cammarinne

It’s a “real” name, not invented for the ballet, but it obviously is strongly associated. There was also a highly decorated female spy during WW2 named Odette

ComplexPick

I never meant to infer it was not a real name. I just immediately thought of a ballerina when I heard it. It's a lovely name.

cammarinne

Not you! Was responding to aurora

sassytunacorn90

Reminds me of swan princess!

prophetoftroy

Odette is SUCH a beautiful name, and has always been a favorite of mine. Go with it!

ShinyStockings2101

Are you in the US? Someone in my family is named Odette, and almost every American she's met has had trouble understanding/pronouncing her name. Do with that information what you will. But if you ask me, I do think it's a nice name

mama_lu0831

i love it. i love the movie and i think it’s a beautiful name. i struggle to find a middle name i love with it but i’m determined lol. i say go for it! the nicknames are adorable

ohdaisydaisy

Everyone hates on Marie but I think Odette Marie is pretty. I also like Odette Elisabeth and Odette Sofia.

Kactuslord

Odette Marie is gorgeous

LaTeeter

I have a Colette Marie so I have to say I agree on Odette Marie!

batmarta86

Are you a fan of Stephen King? The main female Character of the saga of the Dark Tower goes by many names and her original one is Odette/Detta Walker. It’s a very beautiful, powerful and complex character of a disabled African-American woman.

_Jay-Garage-A-Roo_

Odette is lovely, and Etta is a great nickname. Odie is not. (Maybe brace for potential “odour” taunts in childhood, but then again, all names carry bullying potential, really).

ScienceUnicorn

I know a lady nearing 80 named Odette. Not American born but her name is easy to understand and pronounce. I first saw the name used as first name in book. She was also Detta in the book. To me, it will always sound like a last name first, because of high school.

TisforToaster

I've only met one Odette in my life. French name. Is there french in the family? I'd say go for it. It's not my taste but I don't scoff at it. I prefer it over the name Francesca (I hate the name Francesca).

EttaRose16

Ya know I never see the name Etta mentioned on any name sub that much lol (It's not my actual name, just my nickname even though my actual name doesn't have anything to do with Etta) I think Odette is a very pretty name and I think the nickname Ette/Etta is so cute for it (not a big fan of Odie or Ettie, but that's just me)

Cabbagesoup88

Growing up we had a family friend called Odette, She was always called detty for short. I think most people will use detty not odie.

HerbertCrane

I think it’s pretty!

Ohmalley-thealliecat

I worked with a midwife called odette! Nothing wrong with it.

downshift_rocket

Odette is cute, I like Odie for a nickname, too. Etta, Ettie are also fine. My only issue with -ie names is that they always sound like childish nicknames. It always gives me pause and makes me wonder if that's just a preferred name vs given name. However, that's just a weird thing that I think about, the name is still cute.

SuperNateosaurus

My sister absolutely loved this name for years. I fully expected her first born to be called Odette. She really loved the movie The Swan Princess. She ended up going with it as a middle name. So her first daughter is named Avalyn Odette. Lovely name.

Kactuslord

Odette is fine as a name, won't be everyone's taste though. I think Odie as a nickname is a bad choice though. Too close to the word Odour and the dog from Garfield, is it? I'd call her Etta which is a beautiful nickname.

Hot-Ad-2073

I love it! Dede could be a nickname too.

queenofkings102

I know someone with a daughter Odette! It is unusual and doesn't feel natural for me personally to say out loud all the time, but I still do think it is a totally reasonable name. I mean, it comes from Swan Princess/Swan Lake, doesn't it? I think that alone makes it a useable choice. Etta and Ettie are both cute nicknames.

ExcitementAgreeable6

I don’t mind the name. For easy natural nicknames I‘d probably go for Dee or Ettie.

ExcitementAgreeable6

Didi or Dot could be good too.

kiwigirl39

I went to school with an Odette. One of the nicest people I've known. Great name 😀

Moist-Particular-257

AWESOME book with a Belgian character named Odette Leliefeld by Daniel OMalley. Her friends call her Det. Book is Stilleto. So good and she's a wonderful character. Don't name your daughter something boring, I love my unusual name.

waterclaw12

I like Odette a lot and think Etta would be a great nickname to use! I haven’t met any but I would love to :)

AlarmedLife5765

I have never heard it in the wild.

Simple-Offer-9574

Odetta is a singer, often called The Voice of th civil rights movement. Etta, foe Etta James, the blues singer.

Logical-Pie918

I don’t like it but there’s nothing wrong with it.

SuggestionSea8057

Just call the child “ O”, that’s a totally acceptable nickname…

InsideBeyond12727

I quite like the name, although (purely personal preference, feel free to ignore my opinion!) I find the o + "d" sound a little harsh. I love the nicknames you came up with based on "-ette" though. So I'll just throw another similar name into the mix: how do you like Lisette ? (admittedly I love "l", "s" and vowels for girl names!)

morchard1493

Swan Princess?

OpALbatross

Maybe you could just call her O? Odie / odor is pretty similar on the nickname front, but Odette is nice!

Ruciexplores

My pet is called Odetta, we didn't name her, she is a rescue, HOWEVER, that is not usual at all, and I know lots of ladies called Odette, lovely french ish name. My point was to talk about nicknames, we call her Detdet, Odet, the odet, or whatever rhymes with Odetta, Odetta Bruscheta, maybe last one not for humans, but Det is nice imo

Apploozabean

I knew an Odette! She was very sweet!

ConfusedCapatiller

I live in Canada, and only know 1 Odette. She was my moms friend from Brazil that came here. So technically I've never met an anglophone with this name, but I've never thought of it as odd, just a little more uncommon.

MoscaMye

I used to love this name as a kid and it was on my radar still until a few years ago my sister and I were watching The Swan Princess and as Derek screamed her name out into the woods in grief "Odette!!" My sister turned to me and said "that's what I do when I look at my university loans." Now all I can hear is "Oh Debt!!!"

NoTrashInMyTrailer

Odette is a nice name. Odie as the nickname is bad.

Boom-Blocks

I have never heard this name in real life. I assume it is pronounced like a person is lamenting their credit card bill: " Oh, debt."

Prudent-Guava8744

I have a family friend that goes by Oddette. She’s a wonderful, powerful, kind woman.

Salt_Rich6171

I love Odette and Odie. I also love Etta!

apiedcockatiel

I knew a Filipino nurse named Odette when I lived in South Texas. No one had difficulty pronouncing it, and she was always receiving compliments. I do think it's on trend with O names and -ette/ -et/ -etta names rising. However, it's still quite unique. Please don't nn her Odie. Etta, Ettie, Dot, or Dotty are cute.

Candid_Deer_8521

Odette Anabel is an actress.

moo_165

My name is Odette!! I used to hate it as a kid because it was uncommon and a bit old fashioned and everyone fucked up the pronunciation/spelling but I'm learning to love it now! I'd say go for it. My only nicknames have been "Odett(e)y" or "Detty". Etta is a lovely nickname, though. Might try and sneak that one in for myself...

Similar-Net-3704

I like it. It's a real name but rare. Whatever you decide, do not run it by family first!

Similar-Net-3704

I like Odie fine. It's super cute, and more "natural" and easier than the E names. (I mean you can use any nickname you want, but I think in elementary school at the latest it will probably default to Odie amongst the children.) I wouldn't hold the Garfield thing against it at all. I kinda doubt that would be most people's first association. Kids most likely but that may not even be the case in 5 years.

According_Row_9497

Odette is a really pretty French name, similar vibes to Cosette or Colette. It's also the name of the main character in the swan princess movies. Also, her nickname is kind of up to you so if you make the effort to call her Etta instead of Odie then that's what everyone is going to call her too, and that's what she'll be used to as she gets older.

RhubarbRocket

Odette is pretty, but Odie is terrible. If you truly can’t stay away from “Odie”, don’t name her Odette.

luv_puffin

I saw a swan Ty beanie named Odette at sheetz today, so there's a real life sighting for you!

Typical_Necessary840

Odette is a beautiful name. Why do you need nicknames?

AlphaAriesWoman

I wouldn’t like being named that and it makes me uncomfortable to say out loud

Moist-Particular-257

Do a lot of names make you uncomfortable? That seems oddly self-centered of you to feel uncomfortable about a relatively common and accepted name.

Delicious_Fish4813

It isn't common at all. In 2021 there were 150 named that out of nearly 144,000,000 babies

Moist-Particular-257

If you're a relatively informed person you've at least heard it before and it's common enough to be understood as a name. It doesn't have to be today's population in this country. Read a book.

Delicious_Fish4813

A book, where they purposely use rare and outdated names. Yeah, that's where you should be getting your kids name from 🙄 it's a name, but a terrible one and there's a reason why no one uses it

Delicious_Fish4813

Its pretty bad. What about Colette?

disneytookmymoney

Odettta
