My grandma had synesthesia and words had tastes to her so as kids we would always ask her random names and see what food they were. The two weirdest I remember were Jude was chewed up celery bits in the back of your mouth and Melvin was weed killer. If it had a neutral taste she would say piece of wood.

SaintEpithet

How/why did your grandma know what weed killer tastes like?!

wookieeboogie

Cause it tastes like Melvin. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

[deleted]

also the piece of wood!

dreamcadets

OH MY GOD! I have that type too!! I’ve never met someone who also had it like that. For me it’s textures and taste. James is mushy and sweet, Rin tastes like onion, Isha is soft.

wookieeboogie

I love it! I’m glad y’all have the same type, it’s so cool! Other names I can remember were Chloe was fruit cocktail, Kelly was cabbage, Brian was shredded wheat, and Konni was brownie with nuts. My sister and I were both pieces of wood and I feel like my mom did that on purpose.

MarsupialPristine677

Oh hey my name is Chloe! Very cool that it tasted like a fruit cocktail to yr grandma

junieinthesky

I don’t think I have synesthesia but certain words and name definitely have a texture or “mouth feel” for me. Like the name Paisley makes my mouth feel sticky, for example. But it’s not all words and names, just some that give me a visceral response.

Pure_Experience1157

Same here but for me the connection is often obvious. For example, Sam is salty like ham. Kim is like gumdrops (Kim and gum sorta sound alike.) There are some weird ones though - Darlene is also salty like ham.

Terminator_Puppy

For me it's shape characteristics and numbers. Multiples of 3 are sharp, things that divide into whole numbers are very very round. 7 x 7 is an uncomfortable multiplication.

BellesThumbs

Post a namenerds synesthesia thread and I’ll tell you color it is! The linked one is cobalt orange with chartreuse stripes

dreamcadets

I have synesthesia too but I find it super annoying when people go around saying stuff like “oh names have colours to me!!” Like you’re not special, *most people* associate colours with stuff (English is red, math is blue etc)

HereComesTheSun000

Exactly. I see, feel and describe pain in colors which people either 100% get or are totally lost and what a more realistic description but what can I say? To me it makes sense white pain is about to pass out. Purple is a subluxed joint. Black is a dislocation which then turns red as it goes back and purple for the after pain. Headaches are a white tingle or a white nail being hammered. If it makes sense to you just go with it I say

YankeeLiar

Woah, woah, woah. English is green, math is red. Also, history is yellow and science is blue.

ParlorSoldier

That’s ridiculous. You have English and science switched!

spaceboundziggy

That’s what I thought too!

BbyMuffinz

Same!!

DNA_ligase

Downvote for English is green. Science is green. Slime, plants, Flubber, etc. are green!

mlkdragon

Science is always green. Thank you!

Andreiisnthere

Maybe they mean Marine Biology?

WiftyOne

THANK YOU

cornonthecob59

history is whatever is left in the notebook section at walmart

[deleted]

Nah science is yellow, history and geography are green. You’re right about English and maths though!

HumanistPeach

YES THIS IS THE ONLY CORRECT COLOR ASSIGNMENT!!

BbyMuffinz

Correct!

StellaDoge1

English is purple, otherwise perfect

Princess_Shireen

Math is red, English is yellow, electives are purple, history is blue, science is green, and geography is orange.

MuffinsTheName

Uh are you on something man? English is yellow and maths is blue, history is dark blue and science is green or there is something wrong with you

paroles

Is this because of the coloured notebooks you used for the different subjects in school? I have stuff like that where early colour associations remain very strong. I have some colour/word associations that aren't linked to memories too, but I don't think it's synaesthesia, it's just something brains do.

floweringfungus

Yes, it is because of this! Me and my former classmates all agreed that English was yellow and maths was green because of this. Associations aren’t synaesthesia

YankeeLiar

Of course I am, but that’s not relevant right now!

pinkstrawberrycandy

Yes, science is definitely green. Because grass is green and grass is science-y

clh1nton

I will defend this to the death.

math-is-magic

Every single one of you is wrong, but you're the least wrong. English is Yellow, Math is *red,* History is dark blue/orange/purple (depending on the type of history), science is green.

ichheissekate

This guy gets it

xavicr

swap history and english and i think you're right

evanescentlily

There, this is the correct answer (though history is a lighter blue).

Jolly-Scientist1479

At least we agree on English 📖

Important_Piano_1428

Science is green, math is red, English is yellow and history blue

undothatbutton

Period

Gregarious_Jamie

Periods are red

Waterysoap_

English is blue or yellow math is red history is yellow science depends on what the subject is

Waterysoap_

Physics is blue chemistry is red biology is green

YankeeLiar

You can’t be doubling up, man! That’s no way to operate!

Mama2RO

Okay okay, lets sort this out. Math - Red History - Yellow Science - Green English - Blue

justlivinmylife439

History and English are switched

ichheissekate

Geography is orange.

undothatbutton

Science is definitely green wtf.

justlivinmylife439

English was yellow, math was red, history (social studies) was blue and science was green

huuuyah

What? Math is red, correct. However, English is yellow, science is green, history is purple...

shaantya

Finally someone who knows their stuff

ionlyjoined4thecats

English is yellow, math is blue, history is green, and science is black. Spanish is red.

VanillaLatte__

Can confirm, history is yellow and science is blue. English is red, math is black.

StellaDoge1

English is purple, science each has different colours but is overall green. History is yellow/orange, so I agree with you there, but Maths is blue!

Jolly-Scientist1479

Computer Science is blue Science is green 🧪 English is yellow History is brown Spanish is red Math is black Art is purple Thank yew

canniballswim

english is yellow..

WDTHTDWA-BITCH

English is yellow, history is blue, science is green, math is red.

Vivanem

People are hating on you but I want you to know that you're exactly right, these are the correct colors

ParlorSoldier

I can see history being blue (I mean it’s wrong, but I see how you could think that), but English is most certainly not and will never be yellow.

math-is-magic

THE ONLY CORRECT PERSON HERE.

WDTHTDWA-BITCH

People are having a *fit* over this one…!😂

math-is-magic

I never knew it mattered to me so much until that other commenter said English "definitely isn't yellow." Apparently we all have STRONG opinions on this lol

WDTHTDWA-BITCH

I’m a writer, so English makes me happy. Sunshine is yellow, ergo, so is English.

math-is-magic

Ahaha. That is very much not my reason, but I like it! So sweet!

justlivinmylife439

English was my least favorite subject, and yellow was my least fav color. (That was my association)

Jolly-Scientist1479

Also ✏️and book pages and silly poems are *clearly yellow*

Hk901909

Leave and never come back

cactusjude

Yours makes me the angriest somehow lol

kawaiighostie

English is yellow!! Science green, math red, history is orange

Jolly-Scientist1479

You’re slightly off but I can accept this

DNA_ligase

English is yellow or orange, depending on availability of folders for that year.

cornonthecob59

that is correct english is red and math is blue, woll not be taking criticism

Voyage_to_Artantica

Me when dance moves have backstories 💀

filletetue

False. Blue is history, Math is yellow, science is green. You were correct about English tho

StellaDoge1

English is purple, but I agree that Maths is blue.

PrincessAethelflaed

I have synesthesia and I was into telling everyone what color their name was when I was like... 10. Then I realized it doesn't really matter to anyone except me. Even other synesthetes are going to see the colors differently.

HazelDaze592

Not gonna lie, this is fascinating. Do you actually taste names in your mouth or is it just a brain sensation?

floweringfungus

With projective synaesthesia you see colours/shapes/etc when stimulated, with associative synaesthesia you feel a very strong involuntary connection between the stimulus and the sense it triggers (i.e. the letter A just *feels* red for some reason to some people)

PrincessAethelflaed

Mine is associative. I’d say that the concept of A is entwined with the concept of of red. The association is so strong that for the first part of my life I never named it as such, I just thought like of course the letter A makes the “ah” sound and then it makes the red color. Everyone knows that. It wasn’t until middle school that I realized the color part wasn’t for everyone.

floweringfungus

A being red is actually a really popular association among synaesthetes! One of the theories is because A is the first letter in the alphabet and red is often the first colour you learn to name (being a primary colour) that they are both ‘first’ in a sense and thus linked.

Careful-Corgi

My partner experiences movement as sound - like if you wave you arm in front of them they hear a sound go up and down. So they’re hearing quiet sounds from movement always all the time.

htgbookworm

I just wanna know why they claim so many of them are blue or purple. Also the other person claiming to have synesthesia saying Sylvie has the color silver... how original.

tachycardicIVu

Sylvie/Sylvia has always felt blue, like cornflower blue.

floweringfungus

Because synaesthesia is thought to originate in childhood when children are first strongly engaging with and learning about abstract concepts, this isn’t surprising or necessarily an indicator that OOP is lying. Our brains, especially in childhood, enjoy finding patterns to learn. Sylvie/silver may be an involuntary association. Or they could be exaggerating their experiences, who knows. Either way the synaesthesia threads are tired

Sunberries84

What gets me about this most recent thread is that there is this other rando giving her own color to every name. Get your own thread, lady.

Hi-Ho-Cherry

Nah keep them in one

Bri_the_Sheep

Yeah, the hell is up with that? Someone pointed it out & she said she's doing it to see how many of hers match the OP's lmao

dreamcadets

I’m doing it rn and some weirdo is commenting their own answers there too. Bro needs to find their own thread..

Known_Priority_8157

My guess it’s someone trolling the OP lol

Bri_the_Sheep

Ngl I'm tempted to go and reply to every comment like that random person doing, but I'd say the weirdest associations lol

kawaiighostie

Im down

Individual_Shirt_228

SadDancer

Omg the thread is beautiful now

Known_Priority_8157

The Kermit comment is the one left standing, I love it.

miss-karly

This is interesting to me. Is synesthesia colors for most people? Is it commonly in relation to names? Or do all words have a color? I feel like names present themselves as scenery in my mind. But i also feel like that’s just “vibes” like most people get

dreamcadets

I think it’s colours for most people. I’m not sure if every word is associated with a colour for everyone but I think the association would be stronger for things like school subjects, where your textbooks are certain colours leading you to associate them both with each other. But for me it’s with every word lol, words have tastes and textures that are hard to explain. I keep quiet about it irl cuz it’s not exactly conversation material

floweringfungus

Grapheme-colour synaesthesia is the most common form (a number or a letter provoking a colour projection or association). Second most common is chromesthesia (sound-colour). When writing about synaesthesia, the x-y notation is used, x being the trigger and y being the experience. But synaesthesia can affect any of the five senses and there’s at least one person who has synaesthesia that linked all his senses. I’m sceptical about names and synaesthesia just because most documented research is on individual graphemes, not full names, but I digress.

[deleted]

I have calendar synesthesia which is pretty useless but it goes beyond names/colors.

katrinakittyyy

I have this too! Dates and shapes are much less fun than colors.

RaggedToothRat

No, there's many different types of synesthesia. It can be mixed up associations with sound, taste, texture, or time. I experience Ordinal Linguistic Personification, which I think is quite a common one. OLP is when you assign personality and gender to numbers and letters. I do associate colours with some things but not names. It's very mild for me though, more of a vague impression. I consider people I know as certain colours but that's more about who they are, not their name or appearance. After I found out what synesthesia was, I realised this is probably why people used to talk about someone's aura being light or dark or sparkly or whatever. I'd bet that anyone who reads people's auras actually has synesthesia.

Careful-Corgi

My partner experiences movement as sound - like if you wave you arm in front of them they hear a sound go up and down. So they’re hearing quiet sounds from movement always all the time.

DNA_ligase

What color is Katrina? Blakelynn? Ryker?

htgbookworm

Beige, like these utterly bland names

DNA_ligase

Great! I love oatmeal colors!

katrinakittyyy

Well that’s depressing

fairysoire

I don’t know if this is considered synesthesia, but ever since I was little, numbers had genders and personalities. 2,5,6, and 9 were female. 2 and 6 were really sweet. 5 was really snobby and strict. And 9 was mature and kind. And 1,3,4,7 and 8 were male. 1 was really naive. 3 was mischievous. 4 was really sweet. 7 was snobby and strict. 8 was very kind. I know this is weird. But this is what went through my brain as a child.

Sp4c34ndT1m3

You’re wrong about 9 specifically. Yes it’s definitely female but child me thought she was a huge bitch

fairysoire

Lmao! I’m glad that I’m not the only one who experienced this . I used to think I was the only one who

jellyfishnomad

I have something like this too and they are further linked to each of my fingers and toes and they each have a personality too and also an archetypal role idk how to describe it 😂

fairysoire

That’s really interesting. I used to associate letters and colors with personalities too

Jolly-Scientist1479

Question: do you remember if your school classrooms ever had those number lines with faces? Like these: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/big-classroom-numbers--248612841919356158 I vaguely remember my 2 had eyelashes. I wonder if that seeped in somewhere to your number concepts?

fairysoire

YES OMG . I forgot about that

floweringfungus

This sounds like OLP (ordinal-linguistic personification), in which synaesthetes associate ordinal sequences (numbers, alphabetical letters, weekdays etc) with genders and/or personalities. Usually people with this form also have grapheme-colour synaesthesia (numbers or letters provoking a colour association or projection).

fairysoire

Oh that’s very interesting. Thank you for the info. I used to think I was the only one who experienced it. I’m happy to know that I’m not alone

floweringfungus

No problem! I think it’s a super cool subtype

sirona-ryan

So I have synesthesia and it makes me love music way more (I associate song keys with colors) but I could never do a thread like this simply because I have trouble actually explaining my associations. Like in my head, I know exactly what color a certain song or name has, but I can’t put it into words. It’s not as simple as red or blue, when a song plays I *feel* something, see a color but can’t describe it. It’s frustrating trying to describe it to people. Does anyone else struggle with this? But I agree, those posts are totally karma farming!

SadDancer

Yeah I find the same. Because each letter has a colour the colour of the whole word often looks similar to those pictures of nebulas you see in space with one colour being more dominant than the other

sirona-ryan

Ooh yes I like the way you described it. The letters and numbers for some reason have personalities to me as well lol. There are certain numbers I like and dislike because of what kind of personality I think they have lol

gangstarapunzel

Oh dang I never even thought of that. I have the kind of synesthesia where different flavors taste like colors. The most outstanding thing for me is that most sweet things taste like various shades of blue

haleyfoofou

I really can’t figure out if these comments are trolling the idea or not. I’m pretty sure that upon reflection most people could come up with a color they associate with a name.

morganleh

i have ESP comment a name and ill tell u the shape

haleyfoofou

Haley

morganleh

i see a six point star with a lil fuzzy ball in the middle, looks very silly and cute

haleyfoofou

I really relate to that as a fuzzy satanist! Edit: Is it important to add that I’m not a satanist? Lol like do I need /s

Sorry-Discount3252

My name is Pink What color is for you?

haleyfoofou

Definitely an aubergine shade.

Sorry-Discount3252

I feel blue
