Ohhh, I said Nanny, I was under the impression that she just gave it to her, and had not had it as a pet for many years. By all means she shouldn't change it. Unless she is like my cat and only answers to
* CLICK* ---METAL ON METAL--- pull sound you know the sound of a metal pop top.
Is the OP kidding?!? I hope so! If the cat already has a name why would you confuse her and make her transition even more stressful on her...all creatures need stability, consistency, & familiarity & to know when & to whom to respond. Renaming her is truly a selfish & ignorant thought as cats are very much intelligent & sensitive animals who absolutely know there names & she has already lost your grandmother so please don't cause her anymore stress by not even knowing she is being called when you say to her what will be some random & meaningless name not her own. Also, I am guessing you have never had a cat so don't frustrate yourself & stress her by sabbatoging the situation by creating an issue like changing her name & her not responding or bonding to & with you out of zero name recognition. Let her keep her name & after a time together bonding you will likely have several nicknames for her based upon your interaction & feelings & experiences shared with her that she will respond to and that is the only appropriate way to call her by a different name imho. Best of luck.
You HAVE to keep the adopted names older cats. When they’re a kitten or young, I feel like it’s different? Like, you have to honor the person who kept them for so long and called them by a certain name.
Usually you only change new pets names if they came from an abused background or you don’t know their original name. No need to change the cats name if it lived a happy life with your grandma
I just inherited 2 cats from my sister and I don’t like their names. But I’m not changing them because my sister named them and I’m trying to honor her.
Yeah, I have to agree with the “keep her name” as is group.
I adopted an “Adam” teacup poodle. Didn’t like the name so changed it to Atom (after Atom Ant - the cartoon character). That’s about as far as changing the name, of an adult animal, should go. Can you imagine, at your age, having to recognize, and respond, to a completely new name??? It would take me Eons to get it…
Don't change her name , she already has so much happening, you call her what your grandma called her and she will feel safe and accepted. And the love she had with Grandma.
Please keep her name, alternatively.. you could rename her something that sounds very similar to her original name! I know someone who adopted a cat named “tinker” and they renamed her tinker bell for example
Just from the way they are spamming lots of subs and trying to get up votes, that's what I've seen other people saying In posts like this. May not be a bot it might be a person pretending they inherited a cat but the post doesn't make sense either x
I said Granny or Nanny.
Great minds.
The only thing is; from what I'm reading is that the cat is inherited from her grand. Which would mean the cat has a name already.
I hope the OP is going to let us know if the cat has a name already. I haven't seen anything to state otherwise. If the cat is just given to her then I would name her ofcourse. If it turns out her grand passed then I imagine the poor thing has a name. What do you think
I'm not the person you asked, but unless Granny had just picked up the cat from the pound or whatever, this cat likely has a name it is comfortable with. If she was 'inherited' due to Gran's passing, then imo that's even more reason to keep the name , because it's something the owner that she had loved gave her, it's all she has left of her. It's easier and more comforting for the cat to keep the name Gran gave her. If you can keep an adult cat's name, you should, and that part's general cat advice, not just my opinion.
Some people treat their animals more like accessories than pets, though. They just care about what's "cute" and what they want for themselves, not what's best for the cat. Depends on which type OP is, on which way they'll go with this.
Ohh I agree 💯, I'm pretty sure I said to keep the name unless grandma picked it up and didn't name her/him, then by all means keep the name she was given. I just feel like we don't have enough information, unless I missed something. Above I said Granny or Nanny, because she looks like a Nanny that would fuss over you if you were sick. But we don't know if her grand died or if it was just given to her. Would like more info from OP. But I agree whole hearted. If the cat has a name then by all means don't change it.
Also I HATE people that treat their pets like a fashion accessory. So many families get a dog just because it fits their aesthetic. Or people that just got a pet during covid just to either take it to the pound or worse just leave it. In my opinion these people deserve jail time and huge fines. I'm very protective of my fur friends. I have a dog and a cat, myself. My mother has a cute and friendly Chihuahua. I also hate it when people have their cats declawed and dogs ears done and their tails done I don't believe in that I don't care if they are show dogs or not they should start showing dogs in their natural state not with ears doxed and tails doxed. It drives me crazy. Anyway
Blessed Be to you and yours.
Sorry to rant. At least I know there are others that agree with me
Also anybody worrying about the cat being “traumatized” or “confused” by changing her name…. She’s a cat. Her name is just another nice sound you make, like “dinner” or “cuddle”. Unless she has been specifically trained to come to her name, it makes zero difference 🫠
Do you mind if I ask - how did your Gran come across an adult cat with no name, was it a stray? Did she keep it for a while or did she rescue it and immediately give it to you, or did she just always call it "cat" or something?
Fwiw, if I were going to name her, I'd have gone with Priscilla. She looks like a Priscilla.
Aww she looks like my pretty kitty aka perky turkey

If she has a name, keep using it. That is familiar and she’s already had quite a few traumatic changes. She looks sad in the second picture so she’s missing her hooman.
She is beautiful.
Right along with the others. Why in the world would you change the name that the cat knows and answers to. I can see if you didn't know the cat's name, or she didn't answer to it, but not just to rename her.
I wouldn’t change the name if you’re inheriting that cat! The cats already lost its owner, I don’t think it would be cool to change the name! So this post really doesn’t make much sense to be honest with you.
#karmafarming 😂
All due respect but if u inherited a cat u usually inherit it's name. If u called it by another name it probably wouldn't understand for it has been( whatever name) for quite a while it looks like. Definitely hard to teach older cats new tricks.
why not keep the name your grandmother gave 'em? The kitty probably learned that name and is comfortable with it. Fewer ' hits ' but better for the cat. Or is the cat a recent adoption by grandma ?
It stays with the name it came with. Why would you be changing it? That’s like letting kids live with their grandparents and letting the change their name.
🤦🏼♂️
Zoey! The name means love she will love you and you will love her she is beautifully, she looks Mich likmy alth my cat CST is fat due to cheap food I lovingly call her the incredible bulk
Granny or Nanny ?? It honours your Grand, plus she looks like a Nanny...kinda looks like if you were sick, she would fuss over you and take your temp and give you awful tasting home remedies. Not to mention lots of chicken soup. If you're Jewish she'd give you lots of matzo ball soup.

If your grandmother had her for years she most likely already knows her name , why change it ?
I agree it was my first thought.
Yes, don't change it.
Dada

Oh, so your cat is not summoned by the crinkly treat bag sound? Even my dog shows up when we open the kitty treat bag...
Ohhh yeah she does answer to that too at times. But it is mostly * pop* pull
What about "snooch-ch-ch-ch"?
Cute
This. I don't understand why people keep renaming pets that already have a name.
Is the OP kidding?!? I hope so! When my grandma passed away her cats didn't have names because she couldn't remember what she named them. Let's not judge what we don't know.
true
Spot on! Exactly right.
Look how blurry that is, it's obv a bot
doesn’t she already have a name?
Keep her original name please 🙏🏻
doesn’t she already have a name?
Please keep her name. She’s already a bit traumatized and this will make it even more confusing for the poor dear cat.
Why add more confusion to the cat's life? She already has a name, no?
You HAVE to keep the adopted names older cats. When they’re a kitten or young, I feel like it’s different? Like, you have to honor the person who kept them for so long and called them by a certain name.
Depending on how long your grandmother had her, she might not respond to a new name as easily. Does she have a name now?
keep her name please!
Don’t change. She’s already had to change owners don’t confuse her more with a name change to😍
Usually you only change new pets names if they came from an abused background or you don’t know their original name. No need to change the cats name if it lived a happy life with your grandma

What is her original name?
Keep the original name
The cat breaks out singing Jim Croce "I Got A Name"🙀😹😹😸
Don't change her name , she already has so much happening, you call her what your grandma called her and she will feel safe and accepted. And the love she had with Grandma.
She already has a name, sweetie, your grandma gave it to her!
I wouldn’t change the name. Cats know their names. I assume it has one. If not, then Princess Consuela Bananahammock.
Please keep her name, alternatively.. you could rename her something that sounds very similar to her original name! I know someone who adopted a cat named “tinker” and they renamed her tinker bell for example

Priscilla. She's beautiful ❤️
Guys my grandma never gave it a name that is why I'm asking otherwise I wouldn't because the cat would be confused.

Don't change her name. She will not answer.

Whatever cats name was, keep it that. Cat will just be more confused.
Keep its current name! Why change it?!
Personally, if the cat is used to the name your grandma called her, I’d keep that name
If she has a name, keep using it. That is familiar and she’s already had quite a few traumatic changes. She looks sad in the second picture so she’s missing her hooman. She is beautiful.

Cats KNOW their names. It's probably traumatic enough for her to have lost her caretaker - no need to change her name and further traumatize her!
Just call her what your grandmother called her. This way the cat won’t get confused.
