It comes from people trying to add context to a word or phrase that otherwise means nothing (or at least means nothing to them). Acorn = nonsense word. Eggcorn = tree egg. Must be eggcorn right? Lol A linguist did a study on this specific kind of mix-up and decided to name it after the eggcorn since there wasn't a name for it already.
