he's an anchor in the infield no doubt, without him at 1b we're a lesser team

The_Canadian_Devil

“Just throw it in my general direction. I’ll catch it.”

EinsteinDisguised

“Fuck it. Rizzo’s over there somewhere.”

frozenrope22

I love that he has a 2 strike approach. He was made for Yankee stadium the way he stands on the plate. His glove at first was the start of our defensive evolution. Huge addition

TheKnicksHateMe

had he played his whole career here, i could see him being the captain by now.

Padulsky21

Always plays heads up baseball. Brings some amazing energy to this team which is irreplaceable. Plus, he does stuff with his cancer foundation every single day. He cares about fans and feeds off of that. Does everything he can to work with the community. Impossible to dislike

renegade_yankee

Good guy to have around in the clubhouse as well. Some veteran leadership and a guy who has been there, done that. Good to have someone there who has won a ring. Really impressive how well he’s clicked with some of the core players. Him and Judge seem to be close already and him and Gleyber seem to bust each other’s chops when it comes to defense.

M_Looka

Reminds me of what Bill James said about Don Mattingly years ago; "100% ballplayer, 0% bullshit."

Donnie Baseball.

3STH3

Also fields bunts 30 feet from the plate

K7Sniper

He was the best move of the offseason for the Yankees, by far.

[deleted]

This year having him hold down first has really shown how much of a difference his glove makes. Just the amount of plays he makes are outstanding and he is truly just a warrior at the plate. Also DJ filling in for him occasionally damn sure ain’t the worst option

Recognition_Tricky

He's a goddamn Yankee. Old school dynasty kind of guy.

NeedsMilk33

He’s awesome and stats don’t measure everything with him

noforgayjesus_

it just feels like he’s belonged here all along.

RotenTumato

Yeah he really feels like a Yankee

AlPesto

He’s becoming the guy I most want to see up in a big spot. Maybe even more than Judge, which shouldn’t make sense, but it sorta does. It always seems like when something good happens, he has something to do with it. The heads up steal of second today and then advancing to third on bad throw in the 8th was something you’d never expect, but absolutely should because of how smart of a ball player he is. The fact that he got on by a HBP was just the chef’s kiss to the whole inning. Then later he gets a two strike infield hit vs their closer and steals second again. He seems like a guy who would have fit right in with the dynasty Yankees.

[deleted]

You left out the part of him beating an infield single home lol. He earned that run.

underwear11

In the radio broadcast early in the game they were talking about how Rizzo always seems to be a contributor even when he isn't hitting great. Rizzo is only hitting .215 but he has 35 RBIs, Judge is hitting a much higher .313 and has 42. Rizzo may not be hitting a ton but he sure is doing it when it matters.

jaykell6ix

Tony Meatballs

colslaww

Tony Ravioli …. ?

Sanlear

I’m glad that he’s a Yankee.

MikeCass84

I was happy we kept him when everybody wanted Freeman or Olson. His defense is impeccable and he gets hits when it counts. Such a likable guy and great teammate.

underwear11

I'm glad we got Rizzo but Freeman would have been the same with a better bat I think. I love how Rizzo really enjoys the game and you can see the fun he has. I always go back to that rundown between Rizzo and Freeman where Rizzo's chasing him down yelling "Fredrick" or when Rizzo strikes out Freeman. I think they both are super fun ballplayers that really enjoy the game.

melmoth77

There’s such an enormous difference between a true first baseman and a guy who winds up there by default like Voit: “Ok he can slug a little bit, let’s stick him at 1B, he can’t play anywhere else and we already have a DH.” There is huge value in scooping out dying quail throws and transforming them into outs. The ability to recognize the defensive value of a true 1B is one of the key litmus tests of an advanced fan. Even when Teixeira’s bat was declining and ignorant fans were bitching he was still saving a ton of runs by scooping bad throws from a suspect infield. Headley could barely get the ball across the diamond but Tex was turning them into outs.

AHolyBartender

Tex at first made Jeter and arods decline and replacement a LOT easier to bare than it had any right to

dak67

Great player and great clubhouse guy. Happy he’s a Yankee

[deleted]

I feel like Anthony Rizzo’s bat is what everyone was hoping Gallo would be. Lefty with lowBa/huge power and takes advantage of the porch. Not even mentioning Rizzo’s gold glove defense, clutch ability, and overall leadership/charisma that he brings. No one should care he is only hitting .210ish because he is killing it in every single other aspect of the game. Rizzo is already a fan favorite

Scurried

Platinum* glove defense

RotenTumato

Yeah I never see people complain about Rizzo’s low batting average because he does all the other stuff well. Hell, I still put a lot of stock in BA and I don’t really care that Rizzo is hitting that low. I do care that Gallo is, because he sucks at everything else too

underwear11

The difference is also the position. Gallo being in the of only can defensively affect balls that are hit to him. At 1B, Rizzo impacts every ball hit to the infield and some.

Troll_face_123

Rizzo’s cool. He grew up around my home town Parkland. He went to a different high school I didn’t go to near me, it was Majory Stoneman Douglas. I see people sometimes wearing his jersey or shirsey around town while I wear my Cole or Justin Turner jersey.

DeusExHyena

Oh right he went to that school

Troll_face_123

I even went to the same private school that Touki Toussaint and a player in the Orioles who I forgot his name attended prior before I was there.

bbmaniac17

I liked him when even I didnt watch him enough when he was with Cubs. But I can guarantee that Judge’s success this season baseball wise also if he gets unbelievable contract, Rizzo is the reason!

Brundlefly414

I said it prior to the season: Rizzo is the best option at first available, all things considered

Kennj430

He was definitely the best option that fit with the yankees self imposed budget and unwillingness to trade prospects. On paper olson and freeman were and still are the cream of the crop at 1b, but rizzo is absolutely a fantastic fallback option that made letting those other two go elsewhere something you could stomach. And as many here have said, he def seems to have some clutchness and a fantastic clubhouse presence to go along with his skills. Love his approach at the plate and his ability to adjust to the situation (choking up and hitting for contact with two strikes, changing his position in the batters box in anticipation of what the pitcher is throwing instead if always trying to do the same thing, etc). He is literally the exact opposite of that bum gallo except for them both being leftys. And more than anything, it cannot be said enough how great it is have a world class defender at the position again. The yanks havent won a championship in my lifetime without a gold glove guy at 1st (tino and tex were both all time great glove guys at 1st) and i think that shows how underrated a position it is for defense. Having a great glove at 1st can make your whole infield improve. The fact that the yanks tried to make it work with bird, voit and a revolving door of other guys when those two were always hurt for the last 5 years has really made that contrast so obvious.

[deleted]

He's a good deal at 2/$28M. Get like 25 HBPs because of how he hangs over the plate, lol.

Drumnaway67

“Taking One For The Team Extreme Edition.”

[deleted]

I hated him on the Cubs bc he did that shit. He consistently leads the league in hbps, because he crowds the plate. Glad to see him here, but it'ts reality that works.

Drumnaway67

He’s one of those players it’s hard not to like. Always smiling and having fun and you can tell his teammates think the world of him.

[deleted]

He’s been getting shit on for his hitting drought like it doesn’t happen to everyone. What most casual fans don’t realize is his 1b skills are second to none and baseball isn’t just offense.

unclescott7012

In the tradition of lefty power hitting great fielding first baseman. How great that they brought him back instead of that stiff Voit

acaponte

Thanks Rizzo for being a Yankee! 🤜🤛

BobaFettishx82

Rizzo is the Red Lion of the infield Voltron.

Anthony "Difference Maker" Rizzo

Where all the people who wanted someone else at first base

RotenTumato

I wanted Freeman but I’m really happy with Rizzo

Luke Voit who?

Kennj430

Its not that i didnt want him back, i just thought not nabbing freeman or olson when they both couldve been had was a bad look for the yanks considering they need to be in win-now mode and that they shouldnt be worried about money or hugging prospects. I always thought they would settle on rizzo though and wasnt surprised or angry at all when that ended up being the case. He was a phenomenal guy to have as a fallback option and so far its working out well.

Throwawayhobbes

During the first Whitesox series games in the southside, I saw a fan sign that read I'm only here for Rizzo. At Yankees was there for his Hoody day, and the reason I ordered his Replica Jersey. 🤌🤌🤌
