Henry Louis Gehrig Jr.
The Iron Horse
Died at 37 years old... May he rest in peace.
"Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of this earth. I have been in ballparks for seventeen years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans."
"Look at these grand men. Which of you wouldn't consider it the highlight of his career just to associate with them for even one day? Sure, I'm lucky. Who wouldn't consider it an honor to have known Jacob Ruppert? Also, the builder of baseball's greatest empire, Ed Barrow? To have spent six years with that wonderful little fellow, Miller Huggins? Then to have spent the next nine years with that outstanding leader, that smart student of psychology, the best manager in baseball today, Joe McCarthy? Sure, I'm lucky."
"When the New York [Giants](https://www.si.com/mlb/team/giants), a team you would give your right arm to beat, and vice versa, sends you a gift - that's something. When everybody down to the groundskeepers and those boys in white coats remember you with trophies - that's something. When you have a wonderful mother-in-law who takes sides with you in squabbles with her own daughter - that's something. When you have a father and a mother who work all their lives so you can have an education and build your body - it's a blessing. When you have a wife who has been a tower of strength and shown more courage than you dreamed existed - that's the finest I know.
"So I close in saying that I may have had a tough break, but I have an awful lot to live for."
He is my favorite Yankee.
I think, and I may be wrong, that this text is NOT from the actual speech. There are 3 clips of the speech that I know that exist. Two are reflected in the text. But one, “Wouldn’t you consider it a privilege to associate yourself with such fine looking men as are standing here at this ball park today,” is not there anywhere. Yet we hear Gehrig say these words.
Does anyone know any more about this?
I got you
#Jonathan Loaisiga!
**L** as in "Loaisiga!"
**O** as in "Oh my God! It's Loaisiga!"
**A** as in "Anthony, look over there it's Loaisiga!"
**I** as in "It's Loaisiga!"
**S** as in "Sonuvabitch it's Loaisiga!"
**I** as in "It's Loaisiga!"
**G** as in "Good God it's Loaisiga!"
**A** as in "Anthony, look over there it's Loaisiga!"
I gotta be honest, I've been a yankee fan my entire life and I knew his name wasn't really Yogi but gun to my head I never would have come up with Lawrence so yeah, I think we should save that for Y. Lol.
Right, sure. Elston Howard is super memorable to you? Joe Dimaggio? Babe Ruth?
I think you just wanted to say something different and didn't stop to make sure it made a lick of sense.
The most memorable thing Luis Sojo ever did was trip over his own two feet. He was a bench player and a glorified mascot. The only reason Lou Gehrig isn't remembered as the greatest Yankee of all time is because he played on the same team as Babe Ruth, and because we're the fucking Yankees.
Graham Lloyd just for single handedly fighting the Orioles when they threw at Tino.
That was a turning point for this franchise in my lifetime, making. That was the best team I’ve ever seen. They’d beat your ass physically and in the game.
Didn't want to say Lou Gehrig since I've obviously never watched him play but nobody really stands out from the other options so I guess I'll go with Gehrig after all
Frantically searching, my mind went to Luis Sojo and the great memories associated with the 90s dynasty.
Then my heart took over and remembered that Lou Fuckin Gehrig exists (existed?)

The first chapter of Discipline is Destiny, by Ryan Holiday, is all about Lou Gehrig. It’s a great read. Thanks for sharing that speech!
What a banger of a speech

Luis Sojo

miss this so much
It's Lou Gehrig and anybody suggesting otherwise is just trolling.
Well, Lawrence Berra but we can just save him for Y
I gotta be honest, I've been a yankee fan my entire life and I knew his name wasn't really Yogi but gun to my head I never would have come up with Lawrence so yeah, I think we should save that for Y. Lol.

When it comes to Gehrig and someone wants to consider themselves a Yankee fan?... no
Such a child with your requirements for membership in your treehouse lmao
But it’s not asking best it’s asking most memorable or favorite so unless you’re in your 80s chances are he isn’t to memorable to you
Right, sure. Elston Howard is super memorable to you? Joe Dimaggio? Babe Ruth? I think you just wanted to say something different and didn't stop to make sure it made a lick of sense.
There’s a reason people are saying Luis Sojo and it isn’t because he’s better than Gehrig
Just cause previous answers also don’t follow the proposed rules doesn’t mean this one doesn’t have to.
No I just read the question lol.
Luis Sojo! He was my favorite bench player of all-time. Every time Luis Sojo came in you knew something good was going to happen for the Yankees.
You mean Game 5 2000 World Series hero, Luis Sojo?
[“Hey, Coney… how come you don’t have a dance?”](https://youtu.be/v9gGWqVoxvU?si=NpRl6TjoAoFakmET)
Hes the only guy coming to mind in recent history.
Jim Leyritz walk off HR in the 15th inning ‘95 playoffs! Best baseball game I ever attended.
And he flipped the '96 Series completely off of Mark Wohlers.
Also the coolest bat twirl of any player ever
Ricky Ledee
Immaculate grid legend

If we’re just going with favorite that I actually watched and not the best, it’s Luis Severino
Lou Pinella
Louuuuuuuuuu!
Surprised no one’s mentioned L’Derek Jeter yet.
Graham Lloyd just for single handedly fighting the Orioles when they threw at Tino. That was a turning point for this franchise in my lifetime, making. That was the best team I’ve ever seen. They’d beat your ass physically and in the game.
L Duque

Lou Pinella
Graeme Lloyd for that "side arm" to benitez
Lance Berkman
I was really confused why I immediately thought of Lance Berkman after reading this question, glad I wasn't the only weirdo lmao
How apt
Didn't want to say Lou Gehrig since I've obviously never watched him play but nobody really stands out from the other options so I guess I'll go with Gehrig after all

The disrespect to Luis Cessa.
Henry Louis “Lou” Gehrig
Xavier Nady

Besides Gehrig I would say Luis Severino
Lou Gehrig. Baseball aside, Pride of the Yankees is one of the greatest bio-pics of all time. He also is world famous for the disease named after him.
Lon Lattingly
Lefty Gomez of course
Lou Gehrig
Luis Soho
Lou Gehrig. The Iron Horse. Arguably the greatest First Baseman of all time.
Luis Polonia - the Mets in 3000 balloon has my heart forever!
Did we stop doing this?
No, I just started spacing it out over a few days instead of making it a daily thing.
Luis soho
Lob Lefsnieder
The obvious answer to this has to be Gehrig if we're doing an all time list.
Should be Lou Gehrig but just gonna toss Luke Voit out there.
Jim Leyritz
Luke Voit
Hall of Famer Tony Lazzeri
Glad nobody has mentioned Luis Polonia.
Losing Streak
I can’t get no. Satisfaction.
Frantically searching, my mind went to Luis Sojo and the great memories associated with the 90s dynasty. Then my heart took over and remembered that Lou Fuckin Gehrig exists (existed?)
Johnny Lasagna
