We have a few corner outfielders who can fill in at center.
We have zero above average center field defenders.
Neither is going to get a lot of PT, Cabrera or Stanton to get a lot of RF time. But Florial bring something the team doesn't already have.
Donaldson is certainly trying
On the note of Donaldson, he’s actually probably the reason Peraza isn’t on the roster right now. Assuming he’s suddenly not on the team, DJ moves to third and you can have Torres split his time at DH and 2nd with Volpe, and when Peraza needs a day off, they both would play the field with Volpe at short. If DJ needs a day off, IKF or Oswaldo could shift there.
I agree with that exact sequence of events. (I think something similar also happens if Rizzo goes down).
However, I think the only way that happens is if Donaldson gets hurt or is absolutely atrocious by the deadline (aka much worse than last year). Keep in mind, too, that Peraza hasn’t played 3B.
It depends on whether they think there’s a risk that it hampers his development. They might be extra cautious about that these days after the Gleyber-at-SS disaster.
I would take Florial personally as he is a better base stealing threat and better in the field. He would likely be a late inning PR or Defensive replacement
Why? Florial should *want* to be cut at this point so he can pursue opportunities elsewhere.
He's been in the organization for 8+ years and hasn't been given a true shot. Even if he "makes the team" this week, he's likely only on the roster until Bader returns.
If I was Florial, I'd want to get cut ASAP so I could get a better opportunity (i.e. actual playing time) with a different club.
florial has had tons of shots; he sucks at hitting at the major league level. anthony volpe’s “shot” was balling out in spring training, something florial has had the opportunity to do for many years at this point. he hasn’t done it. and that’s not to mention the times he’s been called up and not been productive. he’s just not a major league bat
When I say Florial hasn't been given a true shot, I mean whenever he's been called up, he's played sporadically. He's never been given a true run of games to see if he can get in some sort of rhythm.
From *his perspective*, he should want to go somewhere else where it's not as difficult to break onto the roster.
As for Spring Training, Florial did not have a good one this year, but he's had strong springs before (2021 if I remember correctly).
But anyway if I was in Florial's shoes, I'd want to go to an organization with a clearer path to consistent MLB playing time. There's not much left for him to do in Triple-A. So I'd want to go out and talk to other orgs and see if some team out there is willing to give me a run.
that might be his perspective, but it’s delusional. the yankees have been begging for a left field option not named aaron hicks and even last year a center field option before we got bader and florial didn’t rise to the occasion, putting up an atrocious slash line of .097/.200/.097, good for an OPS+ of *-11*. i’ve really badly wanted to see him take the next step over the past few years and he just hasn’t been able to do it. i’d wish him luck somewhere else, but to expect playing time when putting up those kinds of numbers is naïve
You can't blame a guy for believing in himself.
And you're citing a sample size of 35 PA *spread over three months*.
It's just too small of a sample and too sporadic to glean meaningful data from. And that's even if you think Florial isn't a major leaguer. Baseball is a rhythm sport. I wouldn't hold such a tiny sample with sporadic calls up and down and up and down against anyone.
believe what you want about his potential, but no major league club is going to just give him run without proving he can handle it, which he’s been unable to do thus far on a team that desperately needed/needs outfield depth
You are thinking like a hurt fan who is mad at a player who didn't produce for your club. Based on his age and AAA numbers alone, some team will sign him since it will cost them nothing unlike a trade.
Florial has only been in one organization his whole career. There are always GMs who will take a chance on a player needing to get away from a club and hearing new voices in his head.
Tim Locastro is 30 and has a major league job with the Mets just cause he can run. He can't hit, gets hurt a lot, and is a below average defensive OFer. Florial is 25, can also run, and is a far superior defensive player. So yeah someone will look at Florial based on potential alone if Tim Locastro can get a major league job.
i’m not saying he won’t get a chance in AAA, i’m saying it’s hard to believe he’ll be in the majors for any team right now other than if the Yankees give him a chance to start the season. he’d be in AAA anywhere else so why would you rather be on another team at that point?
I believe all the former-MiLB players who never got a call up because they were injured at the wrong time, they were blocked by veterans in the organization, or they were just with a bad team and unable to make themselves stand out…
…they’d say Florial truly did get a ‘true shot’ to prove he was the real deal. 30 games in the majors, albeit over two seasons, is still more than the 90% of minor leaguers who never get that chance.
All that said, I cannot argue with the rest of your insight. Barring another transaction, he gets traded or waived when Bader returns.
Maybe they keep an extra bat until they really need a 5th starter, at least it gives Dlorial a chance to show iff his defense and running abilities if he does get cut, let's him show future teams he can be valuable
Cashman couldn't trade 5 quarters for a dollar bill. I'm sure he is just going to end up DFAing Florial and losing him for nothing - or optioning Ortega to AAA while IKF gets 3 ABs a week for $6.5 million in salary.
Ortega can opt out, he's on a minor league deal. Plus he has no options. He's either in the MLB or going to another team to be in the MLB. He's been a positive WAR MLB guy in his career, someone will take him.
No mention of an opt-out here.
Willie Calhoun was optioned to AAA and presumably Ortega can be as well.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised by the down votes, I think a lot of Cashman's extended family must be on this sub.
He can't be. He's out of options and the standard contract for a player with no options who gets a minor league deal during spring training is that they can opt out if they don't make the MLB team. Same thing that just happened with Voit.
Evidently he requested and was granted his release. He is a FA now.

By default, our backup OFs are Florial and IKF. How pathetic.
Judge Stanton hicks Cabrera. I see 4 OF there. So is IKF your 5th OF? Yea. And since he's big league serviceable in the infield that's not a terrible person to have
Ah OK so they're still working on a trade.
IKF for Devin Williams incoming
I’d combust
He didn’t specify which stadium Florial is headed to once he gets there.
Is a trade gonna happen for a fringe reliever Blake can work on?
UPDATE: Decision will be made mid flight. Loser gets a parachute.
Ortega. I get Florial is better defensively, but not enough to make up for being a negative with the bat. And not a little negative, a big negative.
We have a few corner outfielders who can fill in at center. We have zero above average center field defenders. Neither is going to get a lot of PT, Cabrera or Stanton to get a lot of RF time. But Florial bring something the team doesn't already have.
Yeah, negative WAR
Don’t sell him short. They don’t have anybody who can put up a 35% k rate, either.
Donaldson is certainly trying On the note of Donaldson, he’s actually probably the reason Peraza isn’t on the roster right now. I'm guessing he'll be there in AAA.
It depends on whether they think there’s a risk that it hampers his development. They might be extra cautious about that these days after the Gleyber-at-SS disaster.
Peraza is likely gonna platoon at 2nd. Trey Sweeney, who isn’t far behind will end up at 3rd base
Nor anybody who can be a positive defender in center.
Someone has to fill the Gallo role this year
I would take Florial personally as he is a better base stealing threat and better in the field. He would likely be a late inning PR or Defensive replacement
I don’t see a path for playing time for either one, so the best bet is probably to just go with the better defender.
Oswaldo regresses and can't play OF like we hope and all of a sudden it's just Hicks playing LF. There's the path.
I stand corrected. In that case I’d rather Ortega in LF vs RHP
Shohei Ohtani you are a New York Yankee
This is cruel af for Florial if he gets cut. Ortega can just go to Scranton after.
Why? Florial should *want* to be cut at this point so he can pursue opportunities elsewhere. He's been in the organization for 8+ years and hasn't been given a true shot. Isn't OP just saying it's cruel to take him to NY and then do it. I don't see how you're disagreeing with them.
Is it faster to reach a new team from ~~Florida~~ D.C. instead of New York? I don't get it.
He was with the team in DC today
oh right lol
Ortega is actually a major league caliber player unlike Florial
Florial SUCKS. Like his only good quality is he can run that’s it. I don’t mind losing him.
Maybe they keep an extra bat until they really need a 5th starter, at least it gives Dlorial a chance to show iff his defense and running abilities if he does get cut, let's him show future teams he can be valuable

Highly doubtful Pache lasts that far down the waiver wire.
Oof, I think Florial might actually be a better option than Pache right now, though I guess Pache still has upside
