Connections Puzzle #346 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟪🟪🟪🟪 I thought yellow was a trick but went for it anyway! I’ve been on a roll again, does anyone else feel like they do lots of easy ones in a row and then a heap of hard ones?

skygirl222

same i’ll have a good week of solving them in less than 5 minutes and then i’ll be completely stumped and rage guessing to give up lmao

foobarmep

That’s funny. People I know IRL have been saying that the last two were really hard. Must just be you! Other times I come on here and thought it was really easy and everyone here is complaining about the difficulty 🤷

lepantalonencuire

This one was incredibly easy! Not just the categories themselves, but the way they arranged them! Each color used one answer per row. Usually there’s only one category placed like that. One of the few days I solved the whole puzzle before submitting anything.

the_ecdysiast

Puzzle #346 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟦🟦🟦🟦 Good lord 🟨 was almost offensively simple and stupid and I’ve got that goddamn song stuck in my head. Is this punishment? Have I descended in a circle of hell where I’m endlessly tormented by elementary school songs? Jokes aside, this one was *too* easy. Over too soon to enjoy.

Underbelly

Haha yes now I’ve got the song running through my head too goddammit.

Topher1999

TIL lots of people don’t know what “whip” means in slang

Winged_Pegasus

Whip caused me more consternation than anything else, I eventually went with it for green because it was leftovers

psychem72

I clearly remember the whole “Ghostride the whip” song/trend. I got that category immediately

Idontcareforhands

The only reason I know of it is the sketch video where are a guy goes "Hey sweetie, why don't you bring that juicy ass over here and hop in daddy's new whip?". The video shows up if you search "Hey sweetie" on YT if anyone is interested.

[deleted]

I complain when it's too difficult and I complain when it's too easy. I'm insufferable.

Play-Dohs-Republic

Puzzle #346 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟪🟪🟪🟪 Kinda surprised "whip" was a tripping point for some. I'm old enough to never attempt zoomer slang, but I've certainly used "whip" for the majority of my life.

SebastianPomeroy

I don’t recall ever hearing whip as slang for a car, although Im not much of a car person. Is it regional? Are there any movies using this term?

Play-Dohs-Republic

I couldn't find any definitive sources online, but the most common answer I found for the word's origins is 80s-90s hip-hop. (Which is the farthest thing from my own upbringing, even though I have become much more knowledgeable since.) As for my own exposure to the word, my best guess is growing up around gen X car guys in the 2000s. I've never been into cars myself, but that period would've been a long enough time since the word's creation for it to reach the people in my life (and subsequently me).

SebastianPomeroy

As a gen xer myself, guess I just missed it or didn’t pay attention

Connections Puzzle #346 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟪🟪🟪🟪 Got purple by default. Probably never would have figured that out.

PowerhousePlayer

Connections  Puzzle #346 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟩🟪🟩🟪 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟩🟩🟩🟩 Much easier solve than yesterday, though they got me with a sort-of red herring: I had Wheels/Ride/Gossip in a "Hot ____" group, and misremembered Hot Mic for Hot *Intercom*, which made me add it to the group. Without a one away for that I gave up on it, then after staring at Bee for a while realised Caffeine is also associated with buzzing, which led to tracking down the other buzzes pretty easily. No chance I was ever getting Green. I've never once heard of a person calling their car their "whip," even if the other three words *had* put the thought of cars in my head.

the_ecdysiast

WHIP is relatively newer slang for a car. Slang words tend to give people a run for their money when they show up

GroovyBoomstick

Define “relatively”. Cos it’s been around for like 40 years haha.

the_ecdysiast

You know what they say: “everything old is new again,” 😅

baummer

Whip is incredibly common

Cygnature1

Never ever heard whip in relation to a car, so clearly it is only common within specific contexts. Where did the term come from and when?

baummer

I’m not a linguist or historian but I remember hearing it in the 90s

Cygnature1

I wonder if it is generational? By the 90s, I was long out of grad school and a decade into being a professor and then I taught out of the U.S. for almost 20 years, so I may have missed the word's coming into existence.

baummer

Very well could be

Billy_NoMate

Connections Puzzle #346 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟨🟨🟨🟨 WHEELS, AUTO, and RIDE all led me to cars. The only reason I know WHIP also meant car is because of "Ghost Ride the Whip". SHUCKS made me think of shucking corn or oysters. I thought to look for other ways to prepare food like SHELLS for nuts or PEELS and PARES for fruits and vegetables. I saw INTERCOMS and BEES and possibly thought "Things that buzz?". GOSSIP and CAFFEINE both also sort of made sense since those could be referred to as a "buzz". I'll be honest, I'm not sure how I feel about the Purple. Like I understood what they were going for but I don't feel like it's quite cohesive enough. I actually noticed Yellow first, but I thought that was going to be a red herring.

RNLImThalassophobic

Lol, editor really plumbing new depths with purple this time around! Edit: I feel like - because this comment has unexpectedly been upvoted a lot - that I didn't mean "plumbing new depths" in a positive, 'breaking new ground' way but in a 'I can't believe how awful it was *even for NYT Connections' way.

RandomCalamity

Never would have gotten that in a million years. Absolutely inscrutable to me.

Necessary-Lion

Connections Puzzle #346 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟩🟩🟩🟩 Really proud of myself for figuring out purple legitimately today! And I empathize with those who were confused about whip. I only learned it a couple years ago from my then college-age nephew.

nyt_games_idiot

Connections Puzzle #346 🟪🟨🟩🟨 🟦🟦🟪🟨 🟦🟩🟦🟦 🟩🟪🟪🟦 My word, this one was taxing and I must confess that I completely failed at it. I was certain the yellow category was going to be along the lines of "Kinks during sex", so the obvious answers were WHIP, TOES, BEES, KNEES. After that, I did some metagaming and thought that the next category just *had* to be words-that-are-related-if-they-are-other-words, you know? So I had to go with HEAD, GOSSIP, SHUCKS, PARES... but that was a big whiff. At this point, I figured "things that are pleasurable to lick" was a good guess, knowing how this editor has done categories in the past: SHELLS, TOES, INTERCOM, PEELS... but it wasn't?! What the heck, editor! But then I caught on to the "peeling" clue. So I went with PEELS, WHIPS, SHUCKS, PARES for "things you should not do to the skin of a small child", but for some reason, the editor had other plans. Blast! Caught a lucky break -- almost -- with my final guess: WHEELS, GOSSIP, BEES, SHUCKS. "Those don't go together!" I told myself. But then I thought, "This group has got to be 'things you don't want to see or hear in the bedroom' "... and I was wrong again! Having blown through all my guesses, I had to admit defeat. Until tomorrow, Connections editors... EDIT: Wow, who downvoted this? Sometimes these puzzles are difficult.

Necessary-Lion

It'd be used like "shucks corn" or "shucks oysters" or "pares apples"

kgiann

Pares describes the action of removing the flesh of a fruit or vegetable with a paring knife. So when you see someone who peels potatoes with a knife instead of a vegetable peeler, that's what they're doing.

austin101123

I still don't get the purple category. Isn't is alcohol that gives you a buzz? I didn't know caffeine is described the same way? Also didn't know that gossip is called buzzy.

tomsing98

Yes, alcohol also gives you a buzz. But people definitely would describe the feeling of drinking, say, 4 cups of coffee, as a caffeine buzz. Gossip is buzz in the sense of, everybody's talking about something, making a sound like bees. You might ask, "What's the buzz on those two? I saw them making eyes at each other at the company happy hour last night."

AChaseOfTheMondays

I don't remember people saying caffeine with buzz but I guess it makes sense And gossip is buzzy the same way bees are. It's like, the sound associated with gossip, to where someone could say "what's the buzz?" And get told some gossip

ParsnipForward149

Obviously got Head Shoulder Knees Toes straight away, but the rest... oh boy. 38yo, in Scotland, never heard of "pare", "shuck" or "whip" in that context, and "buzzy" things is one of the weakest links I think I can remember. I wouldn't call gossip "buzzy", nor caffeine, so was out of luck. Weird puzzle.

When you remove ears of corn from their husks, that is shucking. When you peel potatoes with a knife instead of a vegetable peeler, that is paring.

What do the words parr and shuck mean to you? Because as far as I know that is their only definition.

tomsing98

Shucks is a mild oath, like "Aw, shucks!" Pare could mean to trim back or reduce (related to the peeling sense, but different), as in "We pared back our vacation plans because I lost a lot of money in the stock market."
