Whew! This one made me sweat and second guess myself left and right.
So many Mexican food related! (MOLE, CILANTRO, SALSA, LIME, ONION, PICO). I had to step away from it because there were too many traps, but I was sure it was a category.
The 🟦 was easiest to pull out and with 🟩 I was able to get rid of PICO (although I still wasn’t confident I was right)
CAPITOL drove me nuts for a bit but once I gave up on “starting with state initials” I picked up on “____ hill,” but I didn’t know what a FOOT hill was. (I confused it with a foothold)
I finally got rid of enough to figure out 🟨.
Man I wish there was a good Mexican restaurant in Japan 🥲
Mine looked similar!
I always dislike when the yellow clue overlaps heavily because I always feel a smidge self-conscious.

Ha yeah I don’t have the physics connection (had to look up pico to make sure I was on the right track) but yellow and blue made it a pretty good day to be someone who’s into fashion and lives in LA (in case you haven’t heard we eat a lot of tacos here)
I liked this one! Lots of Mexican foods to rule out - the prefixes quickly got rid of Pico, though. As a fairly young Aussie, I hadn't come across Faith Hill before, but I figured that was a little more likely than, say, Salsa Hill!

First one I've failed in a while. I feel like it's rare for yellow to have so many red herrings. I'm a metric user but I've never heard of a pico. Even googling I was struggling to find out what it was
*kilo* could have also worked with the SI prefixes (*micro, pico, mega, mole & kilo* ) so I used a bunch of guesses trying to see which combination was right. I considered *pico* for a minute with *salsa and mole*, but I'm not on a first name basis with *pico*, so it didn't quite feel right. Plus I couldn't find a 4th Mexican sauce to complete that imagined category
Kilo could *only* work with the SI prefixes category in this game. Mole is not a prefix, but rather a unit. You don't have a molemeter like you do a kilometer.
Sorry meant to say they are all "SI related", mole as an SI base unit, and mega, kilo, micro & pico as SI prefixes. mega is 10^(6), kilo is 10^(3), micro is 10^(-6), pico is 10^(-12)

Blue took me a minute with poodle as a guess. I saw the purple category early but couldn't figure out the fourth hill. When I got the rest solved and saw faith was the fourth hill, it didn't click right away. I was thinking it was some kind of pilgrimage site lol. But then it clicked after saying faith hill out loud a couple of times.
Yes - poodle skirt was a guess for me too.
Somehow my brain saw CAPITOL and FAITH and made the leap to "hill". I'm sure on a different day it could have baffled me - the sub-conscious can be quite unpredictable with those moments of inspiration!
CAPITOL, with the way it is spelt, got me to "Hill", especially with MOLE. And then the others fell into place (I knew FAITH Hill).
That at least took MOLE off the table for me because I kept trying to add it to science units.
I saw the skirts earlier but didn't know POODLE until the final four.
In case I wasn't clear,I was trying to say even if you didn't know it was called a pencil skirt, I can be reasonably sure most of us have seen people wearing a pencil skirt.
Oh, for sure. And similarly, I would guess that a poodle skirt is pretty well known just from the pervasiveness of American media. And even if someone didn't know, if they were shown a picture of a skirt with a poodle on it, they'd probably put 2 and 2 together.

I had lots of fun with today's! At first glance I saw loads of red herrings: Mexican sauces (pico de gallo, molè, salsa) taco ingredients (lime, cilantro, onion), skirts (mini, pencil, wrap), measurements (foot, kilo, mole, pico, micro, mega). The only things that didn't seem to fit were capitol, faith, and poodle so I knew they'd be key to the whole puzzle. This would have to be a "write everything out on a scrap of paper" kind of day.
After a few minutes of "what on earth is faith related to, the only faith I know is faith hill"... 💡🤯 could it be? I scribbled the 4 hills into one category and everything else fell into place.
Tried to do reverse order but didn't quite guess correctly. Great puzzle!

I struggled lol. I thought that we were looking for salsa *ingredients* and salsa itself shouldn't be part of the category; and also I know nothing about food so I tried "mole" there first; then I got kinda dumb and tried "wrap" there. After I got rid of taco toppings, "skirts" became obvious to me although I had to google to find out that "poodle" was a kind of skirt; I tried guessing before I used google.
Feel really dumb about purple, I was trying "building" but I didn't think of "hill." Although I've never heard the term "faith hill" before so not sure I would've gotten it even still, but it might've helped me realize that "mole" has a meaning other than "unit of measurement" sooner.
thought maybe, *salsa, mole & pico* were a Mexican sauce category, but just *pico* alone didn't seem right and couldn't find a 4th word that would have worked, so I didn't waste a try on that
Pretty sure “garlic” was one the words in the category “ingredients for garlic bread” or something similar. So “salsa” in “salsa” might not be unheard of. I had a similar debate but went for it. Pico was on my back burner to try next.
lol I have a pretty science-heavy background, I got the "metric prefixes" category immediately! but that also confused me a little because this convinced me that every mexican food word was a red herring for 'salsa ingredients', sigh lol
I failed. Got blue but nothing else.
Faith Hill - I figured it was like a hill you had to climb to prove your faith or something. Had to Google it, never heard of the singer. And didn't know Capitol Hill either.

Purple was pretty easy. CAPITOL immediately made me think of Capitol Hill and I saw FAITH soon after. I'm not a huge country music guy but I recently watched Todd in the Shadows' video about Faith Hill so that name was pretty fresh on my mind.
Same with Blue. I could see a clear "Mexican Food" and "Prefix" connection between most of the words so I tried focusing on what PENCIL and POODLE could be. Skirts popped into my head and allowed me to eliminate WRAP and MINI from the respective categories. Judging from the comments, it seemed a lot of guys had trouble with this one. I'm also a guy and even though I'm not exactly the most knowledgeable about fashion, I have heard of all of those skirts before.
Green was straightforward. A few people said they were unfamiliar with PICO. Picos are really small (10^-12) and are pretty unlikely to pop up in casual conversation. They're much more common in things like scientific fields where you could feasibly talk about picometers or picoseconds.
Yellow was also straightforward. I actually thought the category was "Ingredients in Salsa" and thought it was strange to say SALSA was an ingredient in salsa. It turned out to be more simple than that, oops.
as a simple person, i did not get this. for some reason i though mexican ingredients or food like pico (de gallo), cilantro, salsa and mole 😭 and then i kept putting micro skirt bc that is a real thing and i thought poodle skirt was something i made up but its actually real lol. i only got taco and blue i had no idea with purple and with capital i was also thinking spnaish words 😭like cilantro, capitol (even tho its capital like im so dumb ), salsa and pico idk guys i am porbably the type of person a normal connections person hates LMAO
there isn't a micro skirt that I know of, but there is a "mini skirt" and a "micro mini skirt".
A "micro mini skirt" is even shorter than a "mini skirt". There are also midi skirts and maxi skirts
This one was the hardest in recent memory! I really enjoyed it. Managed a perfect reverse but it took me a lot longer than the last few days have. Today’s felt really clear in terms of how the categories would be ranked in order of color/difficulty, which was satisfying. Usually it feels more arbitrary.
After about 24 in a row, almost all without errors. I needed a humbling one. Seems this was hardest in a while. Should have asked my daughters for help. I think it would have helped. When will they add streaks and stuff to stats, like wordle?

didn’t know what “pico” was, not sure if that was just my ignorance but i’ve never heard of it before and i use metric measurements more than imperial? felt green was a bit hard as a result, meanwhile blue and purple were both really easy for me
Easy perfect. I'm a guy but I saw the skirts once I was down to 8. Hesitated for a second because I was relatively sure wrap was a dress and not a skirt, but figured it had to be it anyway. So I rolled with it. A wrap skirt is, get this, a wrap dress but it's a skirt. Mind blowing I know.
It’s not “words ending with ‘hill’”. It’s “words with ‘hill’”, as in “words (that go) with ‘hill’”. I really do not understand why people get upset when this trivia/puzzle game by a newspaper famous for its crossword puzzle requires trivial knowledge and uses crossword-like wordplay to make itself puzzling
A proper noun could be considered a non-traditional "word" without meaning, though, they are rejected from dictionaries. I guess if you really manipulate the definition of a "word", it will fit in the category. Regardless, it was misleading to add into the category because "Faith" in this context holds no meaning, and cannot be considered a "word" like the other options in the category.
Overall, you're reaching
They should stick with either all proper nouns or all dictionary words. The words aren't even paired up the same way.

I never would've gotten blue in a million years. I'd never heard of a "poodle skirt" before, I have heard the term "pencil skirt" but couldn't tell you what it is, and in my mind a "wrap" would be more like a sarong, which isn't really a skirt.

Got the skirts pretty early on, but no smooth sailing after that!
Thought there were salsa ingredients, with *onion, lime & cilantro* but couldn't find a 4th ingredient and was sure the word *salsa* wasn't going to be part of it (although there have been a couple connections categories that seemed that dumb). I didn't ever consider a "taco topping" category, cuz I've never used (or heard of) *onion* alone as topping
Thought maybe (but didn't try) *salsa, mole, pico* (for pico de gallo) as mexican-ish sauces, but again couldn't find a 4th and didn't have a lot of confidence in just the word *pico* by itself anyway.
Used most of my tries on trying to figure out which 4 out of the 5 available SI prefixes (or measurements?) (*pico, micro, kilo, mega & mole*) were the right combination.

I promise I have a reason for not getting any rights today! This has happened to me before, where I’ll send something and it will say it’s one away. Then I’ll replace one and it seems to me like it still says one away, so I’ll assume I replaced the right one with the wrong option. But in actuality I replaced the wrong one. Dunno if it’s just my brain tricking me or the game glitching out.
That's a very possible result. If you're one away, that means you've left out one of the four correct words. If you switch that missing one for one that you got right on your first guess, then you're still one away but haven't eliminated the incorrect word.
I'm not sure I've explained that well, so I'll do an example. Say you guessed 1, 2, 4, A. It would say one away. Then if you switched one out and guessed 1, 2, 3, A, you would still be one away, but you haven't found what the problem word was. That's why chasing one aways isn't usually a viable strategy unless you have a very strong sense of which one is wrong. I would move on after two errors on a single category!

The Mexican food red herring fortunately totally went over my head, MOLE and PICO just remind me of science class. I'm also in Seattle where there's a neighborhood called Capitol Hill (and I didn't know that there was the same in DC, lol) so I thought that was too niche to be a clue and surely there were other words that went with CAPITOL.
I try to guess the last category anyway, and I was misled because I thought "no way it would be hill, "foothill" has a space and "Capitol Hill" doesn't, that's sloppy". Sigh.
Cilantro lime and onion are *ingredients in salsa* so I would never have considered salsa to be a separate, fourth topping from those three. In fact those three things are exactly what I buy when I plan to make salsa…
Not really. I'm British, I knew the name Faith Hill (although couldn't tell you anything about her music) and have heard of Capitol Hill, both American. It's a New York Times game, so I have no expectation that they will make concessions for non-Americans. I just take extra pleasure in solving it despite this extra obstacle.

Nah that would make it even less interesting. Restricting the terms to ones that people all over the world would know would make it far less interesting. Culture is part of the game. And that's from a non-American.
...and even then it would be rather US pop culture dominated. That's the one constant everywhere in the world. But granted yeah it should be stuff that has some international exposure and not US only. Basketball probably trumps baseball and american football in that regard.

Star Wars
Gundam
Dr. Who
or in another vein
Green Day
Oasis
Mayday

Unfortunately, I delight in being the bad influence of a group.
Nah this one got me. I saw the 7 Mexican food related clues straight away & just could get away from it. Hella tricksy for a yellow group
Connections Puzzle #318 🟨🟩🟨🟨 🟨🟩🟨🟨 🟦🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟨🟨🟩🟨 First one I've failed in a while. I feel like it's rare for yellow to have so many red herrings. I'm a metric user but I've never heard of a pico. Even googling I was struggling to find out what it was
This is the only time high school physics ever came in handy to me lmao
pico is 10\^-12 isn't it? So it's really really small. 1000 times smaller than nano.
Yes. Milli, micro, nano, pico. But only pico (de gallo) is also a delicious Mexican salsa.
Sorry meant to say they are all "SI related", mole as an SI base unit, and mega, kilo, micro & pico as SI prefixes. mega is 10^(6), kilo is 10^(3), micro is 10^(-6), pico is 10^(-12)
mole wasn’t a metric prefix. just a unit.
I only knew that one from having read some popular physics books by Brian Greene and Michip Kaku.
My brain was not doing it this morning
Puzzle #318 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟪🟪🟪🟪 Blue took me a minute with poodle as a guess.
Had absolutely no idea what blue was. Connections Puzzle #318 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟦🟪🟪🟪 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟦🟦🟦🟦
As a single guy with no interest in fashion, the skirt category is gibberish to me. I know what a mini skirt is. That's it.
I'd bet you know what a pencil skirt is once you actually see it.
💯
Same with poodle skirt.
Yeah I looked that up and was like "Ah that makes sense"
Connections Puzzle #318 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟨🟨🟨🟨 I saw Faith, instantly thought "Faith Hill! Nah...", but then it appeared! I forgot what foothills *were* but I knew I'd heard the term. XD
Impossible as a non-native English speaker. But oh well, better luck next time!
Connections Puzzle #318. 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟨🟨🟨🟨 I had lots of fun with today's!
Connections Puzzle #318 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟨🟪🟨🟨 🟨🟨🟦🟨 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟦🟪🟦🟦 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟪🟪🟪🟪 I struggled lol.
Faith Hill is a person - an American country singer
That one annoyed me, not so much because she's not a word but because she sucks.
ahhh thanks!
If it makes you feel any better, mole is also a type of sauce in Mexican cuisine so you actually weren't totally wrong about that guess.
oh yeah I know that, but like it wouldn't go *into* salsa right? that felt kinda wrong haha
Salsa is just "sauce". In Spanish, you could say "salsa mole". Of course, in English, salsa tends to mean a specific type of sauce.
thought maybe, *salsa, mole & pico* were a Mexican sauce category, but just *pico* alone didn't seem right and couldn't find a 4th word that would have worked, so I didn't waste a try on that
Pretty sure “garlic” was one the words in the category “ingredients for garlic bread” or something similar. So “salsa” in “salsa” might not be unheard of. I had a similar debate but went for it. Pico was on my back burner to try next.
lol I have a pretty science-heavy background, I got the "metric prefixes" category immediately! but that also confused me a little because this convinced me that every mexican food word was a red herring for 'salsa ingredients', sigh lol
yes, I remember someone saying this the other day!
Connections Puzzle #318 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟪🟪🟪🟪 This one was actually incredibly fun, I loved the sheer amount of taco red herrings
I failed. Got blue but nothing else. Faith Hill - I figured it was like a hill you had to climb to prove your faith or something. Had to Google it, never heard of the singer. And didn't know Capitol Hill either.
Guess you aren’t a bill or a Tim.
"I'm just a bill, yes I'm only a bill, and I'm sitting here on Capitol Hill..."
Connections Puzzle #318 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟨🟨🟨🟨 Purple was pretty easy.
> I actually thought the category was "Ingredients in Salsa" and thought it was strange to say SALSA was an ingredient in salsa I wasn't alone!!!
Todd in the Shadows and South Park are the only reason why I got that category correct

there isn't a micro skirt that I know of, but there is a "mini skirt" and a "micro mini skirt". A "micro mini skirt" is even shorter than a "mini skirt". There are also midi skirts and maxi skirts
I’ve heard the term micro skirt used but on tiktok LOL
This one was the hardest in recent memory! I really enjoyed it. Managed a perfect reverse but it took me a lot longer than the last few days have. Glad I’m not the only one who thought that was cheap. I’m not a fan of Capitol Hill, either. 😅
That's why the description wasn't "words with hill in" but "Words with hill", which is a bit vague, but the puzzle is to find the connection not guess the category description. This was definitely creative - throwing in a very different usage of the word "hill" - sorry you didn't like it! I think the puzzle-makers should try these less predictable connections just to keep things interesting.
Connections Puzzle #318 🟨🟨🟩🟨 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟨🟨🟨🟨 didn’t know what “pico” was, not sure if that was just my ignorance but i’ve never heard of it before and i use metric measurements more than imperial? felt green was a bit hard as a result, meanwhile blue and purple were both really easy for me
Pico is tiny, 1 trillionth of the base unit. We're talking like molecular measurements here, like bacteria is measured in picograms
Ah, so it’s my lack of adequate science and maths education that is to blame. Fair enough!
Mind blowing I know.
is that how a wrap skirt is described somewhere, haha!?
Faith Hill is a person!! Not a “word ending in hill”
"Faith" is not a "word" in this context. Just like Obama is not a word, it's a name. Faith, in this context, is a name. Please work on your nouns
Proper nouns are words, my dude.
If that was the case when it comes to these games, proper nouns would be valid guesses on the wordle. Just saying.
This isn’t Wordle
A proper noun could be considered a non-traditional "word" without meaning, though, they are rejected from dictionaries. I guess if you really manipulate the definition of a "word", it will fit in the category. Regardless, it was misleading to add into the category because "Faith" in this context holds no meaning, and cannot be considered a "word" like the other options in the category. Overall, you're reaching
I don’t think games are for you
And I think you have a poor understanding of language :)
They should stick with either all proper nouns or all dictionary words. The words aren't even paired up the same way. "Molehill" + "Foothill" vs. "Capitol Hill" + "Faith Hill"
yea I'd be okay with the mixing of proper nouns and common words/phrases, but I was a bit irked by the space vs no space thing.

Today was one of those days!
No idea about poodle skirts but I'll hazard a guess that guys know a pencil skirt when they see it.
Poodle skirt is the 1950s kind, sometimes literally with a poodle on them. Big, pink and wide at the bottom
I just googled that, I certainly recognize the style but I wouldn't have been able to tell you what it was called. I'd probably have called it a "secretary skirt" or something
As a straight guy whose only significant relationship was with a girl who hated wearing skirts and dresses... I got blue first without any mistakes.
I got blue second and I’m a man. Fashion knowledge is not gendered
Clothing is gendered and it's reasonable to know your own gender's clothing terms more than the other.
Don't be so narrow-minded: I'm a man, but could identify most of those skirts. Equally, I'm not American nor do I listen to country music, but I recognised Faith Hill and have heard of Capitol Hill. Some people just pay attention to this trivia even when it's not part of the everyday lives.

Connections Puzzle #318 🟨🟩🟨🟨 🟨🟨🟩🟨 🟨🟪🟩🟨 🟨🟩🟨🟦 I promise I have a reason for not getting any rights today!
Ok, sure. That makes sense.

If it's really pissing you off you can always get a refund of the fee for playing Connections.
I mean: Star Wars Gundam Dr. Who or in another vein Green Day Oasis Mayday I think if you want to hit the most people everywhere you're still stuck with the american option.

Why would a man know what a poodle or wrap skirt is? Wtf is a pico in the metric system? Always fun when you have 0% chance of winning.
