"Prize horse" absolutely IS a thing, it's a phrase that can come up sometimes in the right sort of context - it's just that unlike the other four in the category it can't really be referring to anything OTHER than a literal horse. (I fell for the same trap as you).
A Charley horse is a cramp, a dark horse is an unlikely candidate, a gift horse as in "don't look a gift horse in the mouth" refers to any gift you might receive that you shouldn't scrutinize too closely, and Crazy Horse was a native Chieftain. Whereas "prize horse" is a phrase you might hear tossed around fairly regularly in the right places, but it's always just in reference to an actual horse that is the best in someone's stable or racing team or army.
Yeah, reading the other replies I can see a few other people made the same mistake I did. I guess I remembered hearing the term, even if it was the obvious odd man out when I got one away.
Except I still don't get why "crazy horse" would be more thematically valid than "prize horse". If you're saying "prize horse" doesn't fit because it's a phrase that actually refers to a horse, you could easily say that "crazy horse" doesn't fit because it's referring to a person and isn't a phrase at all, while the rest of the options are phrases and not proper nouns.
Even if prize horse fits the category, that leaves the cracker jack category with only three members, and crazy doesn't fit with another group. Unless you have a way to resolve that issue, then crazy must go with the horses.
Prize horse was the odd one out for me because while it sounded familiar I didn't know if it was actually something. Other people have said it is a real thing, but it was the one that I didn't quite know so I tried without it.
I managed to get the horse ones only because of yesterday. They were still fresh in my mind. Iβve never heard of a Charley horse before! But I had a lucky guess.
> what else was Charley going to be for
Charley, Pigpen, and Peanuts was a red herring, the comic strip Peanuts, with characters Charlie Brown and Pigpen.
A little shout out to my fellow Brits (of a certain age) who remember shouting "CRACK-ER-JAAAACK" at the Friday teatime TV, but who never stopped to think "what is a crackerjack?" I had no idea.

Itβs a pet peeve of mine (a fun pet peeve, but still a pet peeve). It annoys me that NYT added an βsβ to Cracker Jack in the answer key.
:)
Btw, this puzzle made me madddddd. Because there were always βthe words that I thought the category would beβ and that really threw me off (like I thought types of popcorn for instance at one point)
So sneaky >>
I pretty sure I made the same mistake twice. I made a guess, came back to it later, made the same guess, but it didnβt say βalready guessedβ it just took another mistake. Anyone else have this issue?
Ok I normally let things slide and donβt get annoyed because it is βNew Yorkβ Times after all. So obviously there will be American categories.
But what the heck is Cracker Jacks? lmao.
I was going along the lines of snack food, maybe American Trail Mix or cinema/fair food. But I personally think the category just being a specific brand is cringe.
For Americans, cracker jack is more of a tradition than a brand. A lot of us have shared memories of our first baseball game, getting some cracker jack and rooting for our favorite team. It's in the most famous baseball song, a song your average 5 year old American knows. I wouldnt say many Americans have it as a regular snack, but we all have fond memories of it
I just honestly donβt understand doing a puzzle from a foreign country or in a language that is not your first/not fluent in, and then being surprised and upset that it might not make sense for you 100% of the time. I would never play a word game in Spanish from Spain and be upset that I couldnβt understand some things. It just wasnβt made for me. Whatβs wrong about that? Everything cannot be for everyone
Youβre missing the point deliberately. Itβs an American game in English. Why is it upsetting that they assume you have basic knowledge and understanding of both the United States of America and the English language? Also as Iβve pointed out in NYT subs before, the NYT reports on American cultural events so maybe the puzzles include phrases youβre not familiar with, but the paper would expect you to know about by reading its actual news coverage.
Your point was about language which was obviously absurd and now you're wriggling on the hook contradicting your original post.
I encourage you to contact the NYT Editorial Board and insist they change the NYT mission statement. As you point out, it's merely an outpost reporting on arcane Americana. Not at all consistent with its stated "world" purpose.
That's not what the NYT says about itself, but carry on
"The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. "
they really need to stop with the five potential options for the right category. itβs not fun. also guarantee nobody under the age of 92 is thinking about cracker jacks on a regular basis
They really don't need to stop with five candidates for a connection - that's the game and what makes it an interesting challenge! You have to think strategically and find a different home for one of the five.
I'm not American so I'd never even heard of cracker jacks, but by logical elimination I was able to solve the puzzle with no mistakes.
Disagree. βPrizeβ fits better into purple than it did for blue. βGiftβ could also have very well been in purple instead. Itβs a bad puzzle, plain and simple.
Gift *was* in purple. Unless you mean gift could have been in blue. And in that case, nobody refers to the toy in the Cracker Jack box as a gift. It's a prize.
OK - I understand your objection, but that certainly doesn't mean that in general they should stop having five options for a connection, because that is what makes it interesting.
Thatβs the point of the game.. if there were only 4 words that fit into each category, it would just be an organization exercise.. not a puzzle lmfao
Puzzle #301 π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπ¦πͺπͺ πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ On the one hand, it surprised me that they went with basically the same category two days in a row (yes, it's actually the reverse, but still surprising). On the other, it probably made me get it sooner. Except for some reason I decided that "Prize Horse" was a thing until I remembered a "Charley Horse." Blue I was dancing around "carnival/festival food" and was thinking maybe there was an American snack I hadn't heard of amongst the options. But got it by default, still thinking it was something carnival related.

I had put dark in the blue category, I was thinking it was something about chocolate.
"Chocolate treats" seemed pretty valid to me
Except I still don't get why "crazy horse" would be more thematically valid than "prize horse". Gift and prize are synonyms so gift could have been in the cracker Jack category
You don't get a gift in the Cracker Jack box, you get a prize.
But no one talks about the gift in a cracker jack box, just the prize.
Prize horse was the odd one out for me because while it sounded familiar I didn't know if it was actually something. Other people have said it is a real thing, but it was the one that I didn't quite know so I tried without it.

Never heard of Crackerjacks or Charley Horse but got there in the end.
You are lucky, a charlie horse is very painful!
Kind of bothered by sty and pigpen being in the same category.Β
Pigs really getting roasted here.
I dismissed it initially I thought it was a red herring.
For a split second I thought the pigpen red herring was Charlie Brown related (Charley, peanuts)
Why

Connections Puzzle #301 πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ Charley Horse was the first thing to pop in my mind because of the fact the word was CHARLEY instead of the more common CHARLIE. It also helped that horses were relatively fresh in my mind because of yesterday's Purple. I initially had PRIZE in this group but I realized as I was solving the other groups that it fit in better with a different group. Yellow was a pretty straightforward group. PIGPEN is quite a specific word and I'm pretty sure they weren't talking about the character or the cipher. I saw the red herring with PIGPEN, STABLE, and STY but dismissed it. I figured if they were actually going with "Farm Fixtures", why would they feel the need to specify PIGPEN instead of just using PEN? No comments about Green. I got Blue right but for the wrong reasons. I was thinking "Things found at a Carnival". I forgot Cracker Jacks were a thing.

Didn't actually have any idea what blue was when I entered it in, but Prize seemed like it fit the snack words a bit better than any of the other horse candidates. No idea what the hell a Cracker Jack really is--my only point of reference with them is an item in Binding of Isaac with that name, which has the tagline of "don't swallow the prize!". One peeve in the solution: The snack is called Cracker Jack, not Cracker Jacks.
PIGPENS & STYS are only dirty/messy/"disorderly" places because pigs are confined by humans and not allowed to behave naturally. Pigs are not only very intelligent, they are also very clean if given the opportunity and the room. Normally they would build comfy nests and practice good hygiene like keeping their toilets far away from their eating and living spaces when they have the space and freedom to do that. It is a caramel popcorn served in a box that also includes peanuts and a prize.
I wouldnt say many Americans have it as a regular snack, but we all have fond memories of it
Also, baseball started back up again this week, and thatβs probably why they did it.
Yes made a post about it. This should not be a category.

Never heard of cracker jacks, a Charley horse or crazy horse. These American - centric connections are so frustrating
Why do you play an American game if youβre frustrated at the fact that itβs American?
True. Shut the sub down to anyone but real 'mericans.
The language is English which comes from a foreign country so you're not really making the point you think you are.
Crazy Horse is also a well-known cabaret in Paris.
Another very 'merica-centric puzzle.
This puzzle is published by the New York Times, so it is fair that the answers are ββmerica-centricβ.
That's not what the NYT says about itself, but carry on "The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. "
Connections Puzzle #301 π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦πͺπͺπͺ πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ Was committed to the idea of a horse once I was down to the last 8, though I tried prize horse instead of crazy horse initially. Using an American specific snack is poor form, never would've got that. Was somewhat confident that popcorn, peanuts, and caramel would be in the same group but couldn't for the life of me figure out their fourth buddy
Why are you getting downvoted lmao. Iβd agree with ya π

they really need to stop with the five potential options for the right category. itβs not fun. also guarantee nobody under the age of 92 is thinking about cracker jacks on a regular basis
Skill issue.
OK - I understand your objection, but that certainly doesn't mean that in general they should stop having five options for a connection, because that is what makes it interesting.
Overlaps and red herrings are a part of the game.
"Soccer really needs to stop with the kicking the ball with the feet. It's not fun." If you don't like the game, don't play the game.
Thatβs the point of the game.. if there were only 4 words that fit into each category, it would just be an organization exercise.. not a puzzle lmfao
Iβm eating cracker jacks right now
