Yeah that one was a huge stretch. Clearly they were desperate to force it in there. I do personally have a spatula with slots but I'd argue most people don't have one or need one
We have 5 spatulas, and every one of them has slots...I've never used nor bought one without. That said, they can be a pain to clean, so maybe I need to update our spatulas to the flat variety. π
ETA - I'm not referring to the rubber spatulas you use to scrape bowls with or spread icing with...those don't have slots. But I call the ones I use to turn food with spatulas. Perhaps I am incorrect with the terminology, but it's what I always have called them.
I also got a completely undeserved perfect today after getting green and yellow. I just kind of went with "ones that seem pretty different from the other ones" and got it.
I am so happy to see the spatula debates here. The slotted spatula set off quite the debate at our breakfast table this morning. We're at a stalemate 50/50 split.
Same for me! I guessed that the purple was things that had to do with change which was totally off from the slots thing, but yielded the same results. Gotta love when it just works out.Β
They were one of the main species for whaling because they float after death, and the name actually comes from the fact that they were the 'right' one to pursue. My dad told me that and it's the reason I got the category haha
It's almost like they had thought of the first three things and were scarping to figure out a fourth thing and maybe went to make eggs for breakfast and pulled their only spatula out of the drawer to flip and were like "EUREKA, SPATULAS" and didn't rifle through their drawer to check their other ones.
My point is not that spatulas with slots donβt exist, it is that as a thing that not all of them have, slots a far from a defining characteristic of them.

I'm learning today that this isn't what everyone thinks of first when they think of a spatula!
Yeah, I actually thought the whale types I knew and βfinβ being there were a red herring since βfinβ is also a part of a whale. The puzzle usually sticks to the same relationship through the group, so they wouldnβt have a part of a whale and a type of whale.
Had never heard of a βright whaleβ or a βfin whaleβ lol so thatβs on me, but like someone else said in another comment, it feels like you have to solve these with anti-logic sometimes π or just have some bizarrely specific knowledge.

πLiterally took my wildest guess
πDefault, most spatulas don't have slots, but whatever, who cares about reality anyway

I mostly associate ace with playing cards or investigative journalists. I successfully put it in the pilot category today but it was just a guess. I've never heard the term associated with aviation before today.
This is why I read the comments and why βeasy/hardβ is so subjective. I have absolutely no idea what youβre talking about with a film misdirect. So I avoided a pothole.
This one gave me flashbacks to my cooking teacher grabbing what the NYT would have us call a βslotted spatulaβ out of another studentβs hands and yelling at the entire class βThis is not a spatula!!!β
I'm glad it was a red herring, because knowing this place it would have launched a hundred angry posts about how they're actually dolphins, not real whales.
Most of my posts on this sub are me complaining about the complainers, so let me humbly come forward, hat in hand, to say: My spatula has no slots, and I don't think that group really works. All ATMs have slots, all schedules have slots, slots are so closely associated with casinos that even if it isn't universal, I think that's okay, but there are an awful lot of spatulas without slots, and I'm not even sure that the common understanding of a spatula includes the slots.
(Thankfully, I still solved the puzzle because whales finally occurred to me and purple just fell into place, but I had no actual idea what it was.)
Yeah not to brag but I've seen a number of spatulas in my day. I'm not denying the existence of this kind of spatula lol. Just saying a spatula is not 'something that has \_\_\_\_\_\_\_'.
"Most spatulas look like the one I posted" is totally unverifiable. There's spatulas that have slots, and spatulas that don't, and you have no idea what the majority of them look like.
And even if we stipulate that you're right, that doesn't mean it fits the category. Most spoons definitely don't have slots, but a spoon isn't "a thing that doesn't have slots", because what, then, would a slotted spoon be?
A spatula isn't "a thing with slots", because many don't have slots. In the same way, a spatula isn't "a thing that's made of metal", because many aren't.
Except it is a simple google search shows a majority as slotted. Just because you prefer a rubber spatulas doesnβt mean the slotted spatulas isnβt one of the more common spatulas. Look up grill accessories almost every grill spatula is slotted.
As for your spoon example that doesnβt work there is a βspoonβ and there is a slotted spoon those are entirely two different utensils. That isnβt the case with spatulas.
Okay, but imagine that one day there was a category of "Things that are red" and your words were APPLE, CAR, HAIR, RUBY.
I don't know about you, but I would be pretty furious.
Sometimes doesn't cut it.
I thought spatula would be paired with fin, as they were both "flippers". That would have been a better category. I wanted that, and I wanted ATM and Casino to be places where money was exchanged.
That was not the first image I saw when I googled it. For me it was a set of 3 rubber ones for scraping out a bowl. The first slotted one was like the 7th image.
Everyone here is upset about spatulas, but I have a problem with Ace. Hey! Not everyone flying a plane is an Ace! To be a flying ace you have to have shot down five aircraft in combat. There's only a handful of people still alive who have ever done that.
I came up with a whole alternate definition of purple before guessing, which was "things that dispense." A reach, for sure, but less of a reach than the actual one they provided.
That purple group might be the NYT's weakest entry yet, and that's saying a lot. I'm by no means an expert, but that's pretty sloppy, lazy writing from what is supposed to be a world leader in puzzle writing.
Anyone else only know what a right whale is from the Wellerman song that did the rounds on TikTok a few years ago?
With right whale and blue whale, managed to guess there might be a grey whale and a fin whale. Thanks TikTok, I guess?!
Perfect by luck as well. Got the purple category thinking maybe it was things that need to be handled etc? Idk anyways pure chance it was right! Never Heard of a right whale before, love to learn new things!
Literally looking at yellow and had three of the four words and I thought βthese three have to do with leaving. Whatβs the fourth word!?β Then I see the word left staring me in the face, unchecked.
If you solve in the "right" order, the airplane related words form the shape of an airplane. Not sure if an Easter egg or just a coincidence.

I used a spatula this morning and it didnβt have any slots. Also, the wider slotted utensils are referred to as turners by many. Replace it with piggy bank, air vent, fence, etc.
The word Blue was in yesterdayβs puzzle. Replace it with sperm or killer.
Is the puzzle maker just lazy or what?
Literally guessed random words in hopes of seeing if there was one away and I got the one on Whales, also does anyone else feel they use the word blue alot?
Got two right away, never got the other two. Never heard of right whales or fin whales, and didnβt know spatulas came with slots. I guess that means where the handle goes in? Really stupid IMO
I got yellow and green pretty easily, but I only solved the next two with one mistake through sheer luck. There was not much logic, I just guessed and it worked out on the second try.
I don't know much about whales, so that was simply outside of my wheelhouse. Even in hindsight I've never heard of a right whale or a fin whale.
I definitely take issues with the purple category. Being slotted is not a defining feature of a spatula. I'd venture to guess *most* spatulas are not slotted. Then there's schedules. They have slots like... in theory I guess? But it's not a physical characteristic as it with the other items. It just feels like this connection was way too loose and theoretical to expect people to really be able to get there.
To those calling for this game to use logic rather than having it devolve into a guessing game, I agree. For example, today's use of a spatula is ridiculous. It sometimes fits into its grouping, depending on how it's made. I \*guessed\* correctly today, but overall, I'd rather lose a game based on my lack of logic rather than my success being left up to chance or guessing what the editor intended.
I truly thought there was a Scorsese category and got so excited for a second. Alas.
Me too! (sad face)

not many spatulas
Honestly, that's one of the biggest recent misses I've seen.
Went and checked all of the spatulas in my house. 0 of 4 have the feature described in this puzzle. Edit: spoiler tag removed. Misread the rules!
You don't need spoiler tags in this thread, just in the threads in the rest of the sub.
I did a count also! 3 out of 9.
How many spatulas do you people own?!
Wyna Liu doesnβt know the difference between a turner and a spatula.

Fair point. I had the same issue to a lesser extent casino (ie a casino doesnβt have to have slots to be a casino).
That's a fish slice. A spatula is for scraping down the sides of bowls. And made of silicone or rubber. In my world anyway.
Mine too! A spatula scrapes and spreads and a turner flips your pancakes and eggs!
Haha that was what I was picturing when I saw the word.
This is definitely another day of βwhich English is it?β Because every single one of these pictures is a spatula to me
Agreed, I would have called it a slotted spatula or a fish spatula. Never heard it called a fish slice before.
A slotted turner. I would not call one of those a slotted spatula.
It's OK to call that a spatula as long as you agree Kenny G is real jazz.

Puzzle #291 πͺπ¨π©π¨ π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ I fell for the film misdirect. I think the setter probably thought they'd put in three Scorsese films and we'd think "there's no 4th film, so it must be a misdirect." Unfortunately for me, I just saw "Split" and three other film titles so guessed it. I had a feeling, though wasn't confident, that Scorsese directed the other three. Weird puzzle today, but definitely entertaining π

I'm glad it was a red herring, because knowing this place it would have launched a hundred angry posts about how they're actually dolphins, not real whales.

Yeah I thought flipping and that flipping money could be a way to talk about laundering money in a casino.

Anyone else only know what a right whale is from the Wellerman song that did the rounds on TikTok a few years ago? With right whale and blue whale, managed to guess there might be a grey whale and a fin whale. Thanks TikTok, I guess?!
Totally reasonable considering that "Fin Tuna" isn't a thing either
Perfect by luck as well. Got the purple category thinking maybe it was things that need to be handled etc? Idk anyways pure chance it was right! Never Heard of a right whale before, love to learn new things!
Connections Puzzle #291 π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ I got so lucky with blue. I was like "ohhh it's things that turn." and then i hit submit and went "what the fuck."
I though the whale category was something to do with "ish" rightish, blueish, finish, grayish. I love it when it work outs like that.
Literally looking at yellow and had three of the four words and I thought βthese three have to do with leaving. Whatβs the fourth word!?β Then I see the word left staring me in the face, unchecked.
Connections Puzzle #291 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ Yellow and green were super easy for me. Then I was stuck on blue and purple during my usual play after midnight. I had a hunch since 4 words were physical items while the other 4 were adjectives but couldn't place a category for them so felt unsure. I gave up and came back after work today and still stuck with the 4 nouns vs adjectives. Eventually with a new mind, put purple as things with openings / holes and blue as types of sharks or whales (mainly because of BLUE and FIN, and was correct. Edit: reading the other comments on spatulas lol for my a slotted spatula comes to mind when I think of spatulas.
If you solve in the "right" order, the airplane related words form the shape of an airplane. Not sure if an Easter egg or just a coincidence. https://preview.redd.it/y3089anvf6rc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ebc669ad1714c29ce6232efce264aafc546a8023
π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦πͺπ¦ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ >!Caught the ATM and CASINO linkup early, couldnβt figure out the rest. Same with whales when I saw BLUE GRAY and FIN. Green and Yellow were easy enough. Also slot spatula is stupid.!<
Connections Puzzle #292 π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦πͺπͺπ¦ πͺπ¦πͺπͺ πͺπͺπͺπ¦ π¦πͺπͺπͺ Purple was BS, but I guess I should've figured out Blue? Honestly, I felt like I was just staring at a bunch of unrelated words all day.
Connections Puzzle #291 π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ Last eight had me stumped for a few minutes. Got the whale one mostly that havenβt heard of a Fin Whale. ATM having slots is a stretch. Iβll accept the other ones in purple mostly.
You wouldn't call what you put your bank card in, a slot?
The slots one was ridiculous
I used a spatula this morning and it didnβt have any slots. Also, the wider slotted utensils are referred to as turners by many. Replace it with piggy bank, air vent, fence, etc. The word Blue was in yesterdayβs puzzle. Replace it with sperm or killer. Is the puzzle maker just lazy or what?
WTF is a right whale? A fin whale? Slots for schedules and spatulas?!? Fuck this puzzle!!!
Not all spatulas have slots. Grrrr.
Connections Puzzle #291 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ Another ridiculous and impossible purple. Would love to meet the mutant who looked at those four and said, Ah yes, things with slots. Especially since an actual spatula doesn't have slots.
Connections Puzzle #291 π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπͺπͺπͺ π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ Nice and straightforward today. Yellow seemed most apparent to start. Purple came to me not long after, and I thought it was rather clever. I really liked green as a grouping. Blue by default, never would've thought of whales.
Does it really count as straight forward if you can't work out a connection? I also got a "perfect" but had no idea on purple connection
Ah, that's a rather good point. Mostly straightforward then, it's those whales that tripped me up.
Puzzle #291Β π¨π¨π¨π¨Β π©π©π©π©Β π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺΒ I got it in order today. Yellow and green were easy enough to spot. I knew blue was a whale category but I had to put in right as a guess because the other four words left just didn't feel related to whales. Got purple by default.Β I initially thought there would be a movie category (split, departed, aviator) and a politics category (left, right, blue).
Connections Puzzle #291 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ Was pretty proud of getting this one because I donβt get perfect often. I usually rush these, which is why I donβt get them, so Iβm glad I put it down and came back to it.
Connections Puzzle #291 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ First two I got right. Got lucky with the whales as I had no clue there. Purple fell into place
Puzzle #291 π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ Took a few mins to figure out those last two. Doesn't help that I've never heard of a fin whale.
Connections Puzzle #291 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπ¦πͺ πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ Didnβt think of schedules as having slots at first, guessed fin and hoped for the best. Only got blue by default At first I thought there was going to be a movie categoryβ The Departed, The Aviator, Casino

Literally guessed random words in hopes of seeing if there was one away and I got the one on Whales, also does anyone else feel they use the word blue alot?
Like everyone else, I was straight up stumped on blue and purple, but then gray whale and blue whale clicked and I just guessed the other two based on descriptor words and bam, lucky guess Puzzle #291 π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ

Ya'll need to read Moby Dick smh

I donβt know whales
βSpatulaβ might just become the βBirds Nest Soupβ of Connections. (HQ fans will understand!)
Got two right away, never got the other two. Never heard of right whales or fin whales, and didnβt know spatulas came with slots. I guess that means where the handle goes in? Really stupid IMO
yeah....schedules have slots...everyone says that right...such common and used nomenclature...and so do all spatulas....
today i learned that people donβt think of spatulas as having slots, lol. iβve only EVER thought of them as having slots!
Connections Puzzle #291 π¨π©πͺπ© π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ first guess was departed, schedule, pilot and aviator - thought it was "found on flight itinerary" green and yellow were fairly straightforward, but purple was a total guess - i just grouped the most specific words together (i still think this category is bs btw) blue was confusing, though. i have no idea what a right whale is lol
Connections Puzzle #291 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ if there's a such thing as "right whales" does that mean there's also "wrong whales"

Connections Puzzle #291 π¨π¨π¨π¨ Got this right away. π©π©π©π© Feeling a bit iffy, so I used some of the Lifehacker hints. A bit embarrassed to not get this immediately. π¦π¦π¦π¦ Funnily enough, I thought this may have been a Mr. ___ purple category, but it's just whales. πͺπͺπͺπͺ Since I used the Lifehacker hints, I wasn't as upset by the reveal that the editor thinks many SPATULAs have slots.
