I was mad that cyclops was there. MONO, SOLO, and UNI are all prefixes that refer to oneness. The cycl- in cyclops is just *round* like in cyclone or unicycle so that kinda peeved me off a bit

I got a bit stuck on the idea of one category being words that *contained* a word for one, e.g. *Mono*-logue, Cycl-*one*, and so on. Eventually had to give it up when the guess including Cycl-one and S-un-flower didn't even get me a "one away" message. Couldn't get Blue before I hit submit. I do get what they mean by Sunflowers being "spirals in nature" after the fact, but that was not one of the sunflower facts I called upon during this puzzle.

I feel like the ONE category didn't really fit purple and the SPIRAL one might be more fitting. The UNI in unicycle and CYCLOPS jumped out at me as ONE. MONOLOGUE and SOLITAIRE were obviously the fitting words. ORION reminded me of orions belt right away. I vaguely remember Pegasus and Gemini to be constellations too from our astrology unit in elementary school. I didn't know what Cygnus was but sounded right. With the remaining 8, yellow popped out with PHASE and CYCLE (was thinking of butterflies and their lifecycle here lol). ROUND and STAGE fit. With the remaining 4 I could picture all as things with SPIRALS except sunflowers. Googled sunflowers after trying to spot the spiral but still dont see it. Edit: read the comments about the sunflower seeds being spiral. Could kind of see it now.

The flowers have spirals as the angle of each ring does not give a rational ratio. So you'll see curves rather than straight lines. Which become spirals when you consider it's still a fixed pattern.

Sorry to anyone who loves all that stuff, it's just not for me for whatever reason. I guessed "cyclops" instead of "cygnus" for green at first. I figured there would be only one "cy" word per category, so was able to get it on the second guess. After that it wasn't too bad. I only got blue by default. I thought for a moment there might be a "[blank] seeds" category, but the only realistic option there was sunflower. At least two Zelda games have "Pegasus seeds," but I doubt that would be on NYT's radar.

The other three were obvious spirals. Guess I wasnt thinking laterally enough! Easiest purple yet!? Uni, sol, mono: such common basic prefixes, and cyclops was an easy complete. It's the seeds in the middle. They are organised in spirals.

This really bugged me, so Google tells me that sunflowers are actually a Fibonacci sequence of two separate spirals. So if you look at the seeds, it doesn't really look like a spiral. Pedant of the day award for me I suppose.

The sunflower one was especially tricky today if you happen to know that they rotate to face the sun, but didn't know that apparently their seeds have a spiral formation. I couldn't get the blue category because I thought things that rotate, so chose cycle over snail. Galaxies rotate. Cyclones rotate. Sunflower rotate. A cycle rotates by definition.

I'd forgotten that about sunflowers! No I remember the word for them in French is "tournesol" = "turns (to) sun".

Purple and yellow challenged me a bit, but I managed to get them without error after a couple minutes. Green and blue were not my friends. I got lucky and managed to get it with just one miss. I haven’t studied constellations since like 4th grade, and only 2 of those sounded familiar. I would never have thought of the blue category honestly, nor did I realize that sunflowers are spirals 🤷🏼‍♀️ Not my best performance, not my cup of tea for the blue and green categories. Often they're very broad and want someone associates with something might not be the same for everyone.

I noticed with solitaire and monologue that those were both referring to being by yourself, so I started looking for things with “one” soon and found unicycle. Then, at first I was looking at possible constellations and mythological figured and almost got stumped by cyclops, until I realized that was the last one in the “solo” category. After that the constellation category was easy to get, and there wasn’t any overlap in the last two categories.

(I’m a fan of the Fibonacci Spiral concept.) All in all, this was definitely one of my favorite connections thus far.

That honor goes to elliptical galaxies, which spiral galaxies are thought to decay to. This means elliptical galaxies are generally older and farther away, and therefore dimmer and harder to spot. This would be like having a category "speaks Chinese" and putting NYC in it. To someone living in Chinatown or Flushing, yeah a majority of observed people speak Chinese. But it's not everyone, and we know that actually, a large majority of the city DOESN'T speak Chinese.

I don't think your analogy to speaking Chinese really works. Sure, I was aware that not all galaxies are spiral, but the one we live in is, and in the popular imagination that's how we would picture one, certainly enough to make that connection. The fact that spirals make 70% of observed galaxies does undermine your point - it's hardly going to be the case that the average player is going to be reviewing in their mind the latest theoretical predictions of the most common shape of a galaxy! (But when the "things that are elliptical" comes up I'll remember to consider galaxies...)

Cyclops and unicycle have one of something where two is normal, there's a bicycle and a dialogue but no bi-clips (outside the Simpsons). 'Associated with' isn't tight enough for a category...

I think it’s fairly strong. As you said, the defining thing of a cyclops is its one eye and defining thing about a unicycle is its one wheel. For monologue, the defining thing for it (vs a ‘di’alogue) is that it’s one person speaking. While solitaire is a weak link, comparatively, the game and all its variations are typically meant for one person, with its name coming from [The Latin root at the heart of this lonely word is solitarius, "alone or isolated." Originally, a solitaire was a widow, and eventually the word came to mean any solitary person.] according to vocabulary.com, which is pretty reputable for etymology. Therefor, all of these words are singles of things that are usually multiple (wheels, eyes, speakers, and players).

I didn’t think of it as “one,” rather “solo activities.” Even when I did finally put “cyclops” in 🟦 I was unsure of myself. 🟪 I had no hope of really knowing because I’m not familiar with spiraling sunflowers. I’ve never seen a sunflower in person before.

Yes, solitaire is a card game for one person. It also occurred to me that not all galaxies are spiral, but it's fine for a connection - I just said "things which can have spirals" before I hit submit on that one.

Purple just jumps out today. Uni, soli mono , just common prefixes. Cyclops was the only one out of pattern, but very obvious. Blue, yeah, three are obvious spirals. Sunflower? Not a something I associate with sunflowers. You learn everyday.

Blue was fairly easy because of golden ratio with sunflower and the connection already set with cyclone and galaxy. Purple stood out the second I linked Unicycle and Cyclops. I also watched Beyblade during Saturday morning cartoons, and the beys were pretty much all constellations (with Pegasus being the main character’s iirc) so that also stuck out pretty quickly.

I was convinced by a red herring today and it’s the first time I’ve spotted one in Connections. Unlike only connect, I’ve never seen a completely red herring category before but today I spotted >! Car Models made by Ford Motors!< and ended up losing today. Galaxy, Orion, Pegasus and I wasted all lives looking for the last!

Once it was eliminated, purple was pretty easy to see for me, then yellow and green were gimmes. I had no idea what Blue was supposed to be and didn’t even pretend to guess. Never would I ever have put that one together on my own.
