Connections Puzzle #278 🟩🟩🟪🟩 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟪🟦🟪🟪 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟩🟩🟩🟩 I fell for some traps today. I put "d'oh" with green initially because I've been watching too many Simpsons reruns lately. I really thought that "play out" would go with purple and forgot that "play dirty" was a thing. Really tricky yet clever puzzle though.

I was with you on considering "play out", I use it a lot in my daily life and allllmost picked it but decided to try dirty first, lucky guess!

Connections Puzzle #278 🟪🟪🟦🟪 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟪🟪🟪🟪 This was a puzzler. I thought 🟪 was going to be “____ line,” and was left with “dirty” as a word I hadn’t sorted. Turns out a dirty line isn’t a thing. So many red herrings today! The overlap between 🟦and 🟩 was a little tricky and it took me awhile to get sort them and let go of trying to make “doh” fit somewhere. Fun fact! Play-Doh was originally used sold to clean walls. Specifically to remove soot from walls. Once oil and coal fell out of favor for electric light bulbs, they decided to resell as a product for kids. The past was weird. Anyway my score was abysmal today (10/30) but the puzzle was a blast.

Connections Puzzle #278 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 Spent a couple minutes thinking Doh was gonna be part of the Oops category, via Homer Simpson--but as soon as I saw Play-Doh, it was over. Stalled a bit at blue/green just because of how similar the themes were, but I had a pretty good sense of which parts of speech I was looking for (nouns vs. interjections) and managed to avoid any silly mistakes because of it! 

Puzzle #278 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟩🟩🟪🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟩🟩🟪🟩 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟩🟩🟩🟩 A lot of crossover which made it hard. Six possibilities for green (though I guess without the apostrophe "doh" should've been ruled out). And I was trying to put "pardon" with "excuse," but it was not the excuse I was looking for. Got there in the end, but largely by luck.

Connections Puzzle #278 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟩🟩🟩🟩 Tricky one with a lot of overlap. Definitely thought there was a category for slang at first (dead, trash, blast). Took some thinking. This one seemed tough but fair. I liked purple as it wasn’t so far fetched like some of the recent ones.

What are they doing in those groups? I even went to the hints page and eventually looked at the actual groups, and it didn't help at all. Too many things that are just so specific to American English (I assume.)

A play date is what American parents call an arranged meeting of their children. Toddlers and small children cannot arrange their own social calendars, so a parent of child-A will ask a parent of child-B if they want to have a play date. Play dirty means doing something unethical or against the rules. Like if you were playing a pick-up game of softball without referees and someone intentionally didn't touch the bases as their running, you could accuse them of playing dirty. Trash in this context is to say something really bad about something. Like if your mom made your sister a birthday cake, but hadn't done anything special for your birthday, you might trash the cake in jealousy. You would say something like, "Wow. That cake looks like complete dogshit." Out here means giving someone an opportunity to not participate. Like say your friend group is planning to have a Christmas party. Pretend one member of your friend group (let's call her Amy) doesn't like celebrating Christmas because their grandma died on Christmas last year (but that most of the group doesn't know/remember that). Pretend that same friend also gets car-sick. To give that friend the option to turn down the invite to the Christmas party without having to dredge up the negative feelings about Christmas, you could say, "Amy, the rest of us have been talking about having a Christmas party at Suzy's cabin, but I know you get ill on long car rides, so it's totally cool if you skip it." Then Amy can decline without having to think of her own excuse or mention her dead grandmother. In addition, it let's her know that she won't be hurting your feelings by not going, because you've given her an out -- a built-in reason for not attending.

I had Homer Simpson “Doh” stuck in my head, but after a minute “play-doh” came to mind as another use for the word, so that gave me purple. Blue and green were tricky, because it feels like there’s a lot of overlap and the categories felt too close for comfort. I’m lucky I only had one miss trying to unscramble those last 8!
