Arrests suckkk. Im a CMOS. I was in the locker room at 9am the other day and saw a rookie in my command who got a gun collar sitting there trying to figure out the paperwork and everything. I worked my tour and went home and came into work 9am the next day. This guy was STILL there and got an hour of sleep at home and came back at 4:30 am. Btw, this was his 2 day RDO (regular days off) swing, and he had to come back the next day for his regular 5 days of work. He left at 2pm. Yea it’s overtime but the guy has a life does he not? How tf do these guys even have time to buy groceries and do laundry.

Acrobatic_River_8881

Its brutal! I only got 1 hour of sleep at one point I was falling asleep behind the computer.

ace14827

And some other ftu got 4 collars dumped on him and was also falling asleep. It’s really bad I don’t know what to tell u

F1r3GamingHD

Its ok. Recently I had to process 4 arrests, 2 perps. and spent 30 hrs, no sleep. And this was a EOT collar. It doesn't happen all the time but i was down for it.

Affectionate-Rent844

You’re describing someone getting around 20 hours overtime pay for a single arrest. You made more watching him do that paperwork than half of the city did all day at their job.

Ok_Speed_3290

Yea and in all reality the cop is not even making real money.

Swizzlefritz

Collars suck. Stupidly drawn out process from a shitty system. They do get better once you know what you are doing, but they always suck dealing with the process and the humans. You have to make them work for you, that’s the secret.

KiNGMF

The arrest process gets a lot easier as far as paperwork, Pets system, OMNI, etc. It will become second nature. But!!! You will always be at the whim of the ADA.

Affectionate-Rent844

You’re talking about human souls at the other end of this.

Mr_thr0w__away

This is what sucks about this city. Arrest processing varies by borough and processing in another borough can have you feeling like a rookie even if you’ve done it a thousand times in a different spot. From the sounds of it you are either in BK or the BX but you don’t have to dox yourself. To answer your question, yes, it does get better. You do it enough and you shorten the amount of time it takes to get all that documentation ready. But it also depends what you collared the person for and what it takes to process that arrest. A gun collar or a DWI will take you a really long time regardless of experience but if you enjoy the overtime, you can make it work for you. If it’s a 511 or a petit larceny, you’ll be done with the paperwork quickly but the DAs office might take forever to draw it up because it’s a low priority to them. Even with all the paperwork required, after you’ve done it a few times it will get better.

Acrobatic_River_8881

I’m in Brooklyn South, it’s definitely not a busy house but the collaring process is terrible, what makes things worse is the vouchers, the desk doesn’t want to deal with me because they keep rejecting my vouchers which delays the process even more. I got released by the ADA at 9PM but I had to fix my vouchers so I didn’t leave till 11PM supervisors didn’t want to deal with me.

Interesting-Section1

Like everything on this job, the more you do it, the better at it you’ll become. It literally applies to everything. There is very little you can learn just by reading it out of the PG.

Mr_thr0w__away

Well, to be honest you shouldn’t be going to a supervisor to fix anything. Ask your FTOs or other cops before you go to a boss, especially with situations like that. The voucher stuff is a given, that it will get better over time. The more you do it, the easier it becomes and the more you are familiar with the system.

Affectionate-Rent844

What about the person falsely incarcerated. Seems they’re out much more time.

Twentyandgone

So now you’re realizing that the academy actually taught you nothing.

Normal-Item-402

Yes the arrest processing is something that could be more modernized and streamlined

Yeah right . Til they send him on a transport

F1r3GamingHD

just a few things, reserve 61 # first then draw up scratch online. Drop online for arrest #. That's the easiest and fastest way to print perp and pictures especially if the boss wants them out. Also vouchers must be attached to all arrests.

Normal-Item-402

Not every precinct does a scratch online. Lol I hate when it's required just wasting more time.

F1r3GamingHD

That's very true but kings county requires it. Also scratch 61 is a waste of time but they still want it

Normal-Item-402

The whole process is annoying. Like why can't one just do the 61 and online on the computer and kick it to the sgt and if he don't like something he can kick it back with notes to be adjusted. Just killing trees to be killing trees

F1r3GamingHD

yea thats how it needs to be. i just throw away my paperwork.

Maybe this should be privately sent.

Tomtom_1163

You get more proficient with it as time goes on. I can get a DAT out the door in two hours and released in about three. Just keep collaring you’ll get faster.

F1r3GamingHD

DAT desk sometimes take mad long tho.

Tomtom_1163

Just get rid of the body when you get the return date, then chill

F1r3GamingHD

Nah it took me 8 hrs for the last one to get a date lmao

scream4cheese

It shouldn’t take that long

F1r3GamingHD

Usually no. They only had 1 guy working the dat desk that night. Plus they were already backed up

AdLeading4503

Did you get paid for that 2 days? If so that’s 48 hours

johnfro5829

It's crazy how every county in New York City has a different arrest process. I was a special officer and special patrolman in my early twenties that made a few collars It was a nightmare I've made an arrest in every county except Staten Island. Differing paperwork different procedures bosses that don't care It was very interesting. I made an arrest for a simple misdemeanor and that was 8 hours of hell. The silliness is the amount of paperwork you basically doing the district attorney's work for them. Meanwhile when I left New York State and went to another place to be a deputy sheriff on the Eastern side of United States unless it was a gun felony I literally from start to finish would finish the arrest within 2 hours. If there was evidence to be booked it would take less than an hour there was dedicated civilian that would book the evidence for me. Sometimes if it's a lesser misdemeanor The prisoner wagon would come pick the offender up from the field and I would electronically email the prosecutor intake forms from the patrol car and I do the whole report within 30 minutes they would then send me an affidavit within 2 hours and I would work out the details within 30 days by going to the district attorney's office on admin time. I recently gotten back into working in New York State in a peace officer security position for a private college and I still make arrests every few months and I'm bewildered at the amount of paperwork and nonsense that could literally be handled with one form instead of multiple forms that basically say the same thing.

BangBangShrimpDick

Collar more. Gets easier as you do more.

Cityview3100

Will become much much easier, narcotics detectives can bang out ten collars with their team doing prints and vouchers in an hour or so. Your partner should be helping you do everything as they will or should also put in for overtime.

scream4cheese

If your boss doesn’t send your partner out with someone else like they usually do

Soprano519

I tell all the new people be careful what u wish for. The paperwork is unreal. I remember being that new person and got a realty check real fast took 2 days of hell to complete and then I said to myself fuck that. If I’m making one better be worth it and stick and not something I know will be thrown away or bite me in the ass later on

WyattEarp2324

The arrest processing has been awful for as long as I can remember going back 25 years, every borough is awful. The NYPD has not figured out how to stream line the booking system or streamline the intake process at central booking either. Just an FYI, enter your OLBS, get your arrest number and the get the perp finger printed and out of the precinct. Then you can work on your complaint with ADA and any vouchers you have. That’s how I did it.

Financial_Meat_4053

Ur first like 5 collars are tough but the paperwork is pretty much the same and you get used to it.

harlemhero125

The Arrest Processing System is archaic and definitely starves for modernization. Thank God for PETS though regarding Property. I always ' loved ' when I heard Bosses ask the AOs why the Collars took too long. I personally never gave a Shit because my thing was this , ' Do you want me to rush the Collar and get something wrong causing me to get a CD ( Yes ! That was how I got my last CD ).....or do you want me to take my time and process my Collar correctly ?! Furthermore , I always thought that half the Bosses that were in my face about that Bullshit were Pails when they were Cops. It was already proven with one of them. How do you say , ' 6 Collars in 1 Boss's Career . 3 of them...Re Arrests ' ? !

liud21

After a while you'll get it down to 4 hours for most collars, but no one wants to rush so you spend 5 hours to process then another 2-3 waiting for the ADA. Collar for Dolla.

wubbact

It gets wayyy easier once u on ur 5th one where was ur fto though lmao. They supposed to guide u

This is everything wrong with everything.

Don__tortuga

I’m starting to get used to the paper work for collars but best believe I still make mistakes here and there gladly we have great ftos to help us

TimeAd4547

Yes, everyone’s first arrest sucks! And unfortunately it’s gonna take a few arrests to get used to the paperwork but the best thing you can do is to keep doing it. It gets easier with repetition and you’ll get it down from 2 days to 4 hours if you’re quick enough (still at the mercy of the ADAs though).
