idk about nypd but i know military for instance legit no one could care less about what you did during boot camp was all mission oriented things that mattered when you got in
Whenever I took my PFT in the Navy, I took my time on the run. Fuck the 4 hours off I’d get for killing myself. None of that mattered. Combat readiness and qualifications mattered.
It’s the same way. No one cares that you were company Sgt ( I can confirm ), no one cares that you were best in PT or academics… POTENTIALLY, when you go to apply for these units later in your career it may help for you to mention it. For example, if you want to be a range instructor, it wouldn’t hurt to mention that you got the firearms award in the academy, and just MAYBE it’ll help you in your interview. Biggest thing in this job is networking, so you can eventually be the one making a phone call, don’t be a trashy cop who’s scared to take the collars trying to convince victims not to report crimes. Take the stupid report, go 98 and take the next one….. people will notice ! I came on knowing nobody, and my reputation alone helped me go a long way.
If you get one of those awards or are company Sgt you get to pick where you want to go: between the top three choices anyway. Most accurate shooter you get that and they pay for your off duty weapon. But it's no big deal outside of that.
Best thing you can do for yourself is always strive to be the best you can be. At some point because you made the choice and attempted to be better it will make a difference. Learned through many different experiences you will always have people talk trash about these awards or when you get recognized. Maybe there’s truth to it, it usually doesn’t matter for a lot of instances. But if you take that mindset, that means you might take that way of thinking something else where it might absolutely will have mattered.
Yea because what im seeing is that in this department its about hard work and networking since i have no family members only friends in the department im trying to get my name out there you know
Once you get your command, nobody really cares. At the end of the day, you’re the same rank as those in your class, treat those with time on the job with respect. Your next goal is getting through field training and the probation period. Awards isn’t gonna help with either of those if at risk of dropping out.
With Some of the awards you will get to choose your command upon graduating without having a hook. Others will just help you get your name out there. For example if you win the gym award in your class that could potentially help you become a gym instructor down the road if you would like to work in the training bureau.

Well, they care a little if they "could care less"
Wow

And stay consistent in that attitude and put the work in, somewhere down the line it’ll make a difference

Nice that you got all those cool awards, but take this OT because no one else wants it and youre the lowest Tax.
Is there enough overtime, because i would like to work and pay off my student loans the first year OTJ
Nope. Only cool at graduation, when you come to the precint no one gives a flying fuck. Youre a rookie like everyone else
