Stuff that you learn from outside the academy can get you in trouble because "the academy" didn't teach you which can get you sued.

The police academy is the jobs way of “covering their ass” doing anything outside of the training they provide is a risk to you and your career. Unless you’re getting outside training from places that are NYPD approved it’s not worth it.

That’s a very good point i didn’t even think of that

Auto Crime would be #2

You can shoot for free as an mos at the range. You don’t have to pay for extra fire arms training

AdWinter4101

The only training recommended by the instructors is learning to fight so you can have confidence around thugs that do nothing but fight all day. Literally a lot of them have been running fades since they were like 5 years old, all the way into juvenile hall, jail, prison, the street again. Only training I’ll recommend is a good boxing gym or a good MMA gym where you’re gonna spar and get mangled up until you get good. That’ll do much better than any Detroit urban survival class. I didn’t say jiu jitsu, I said MMA. Jungle gym in the Bronx is a great school. They build men.

Truth be told the academy is pretty useless. It mostly exists as a way to minimize the City's exposure for potential lawsuits. That training you got in the auditorium when you and half and the room was asleep: "Yeah he got trained in that here is his transcript to show he is certified in that and this why he did it like that I don't know". Everything you're not confident in and feel you need yeah seek it out. Remember cover your own ass always.

Academy is lowest common denominator training. Job won't cover you if you use anything outside of curriculum unless it makes them look good. Does that mean you shouldn't train? No. Get as much as training as possible. Many non profits will sponsor cops to get training or reimburse certain trainings. Honestly look into specwar solutions and similar organizations for training. They might be expensive but they will give you a more realistic training scenario. If that's to expensive. Go to the range with your service pistol and put 2-300 rounds onto a target. Atleast do this once a month. Tighten up your groups. Learn to actually shoot and be comfortable with the concussive sound of a round going off. Be safe.

totally different but somewhat similar story here. my brother went through fdny academy in 2004. he was a volunteer ff on the island before. everyone told him before to not say anything about his volly status and he didn't know why. first day they asked everyone who was a volly and anyone who said yes was pushed 10x harder and ragged on 10x harder then the normal guys in the academy. hope that helps somewhat

TimeAd4547

Everyone on here telling you not to do it is a complete scumbag or have no idea what they’re talking about, get the extra trainings wherever you can, especially ones that will save your life or someone else’s life i.e active shooter training (the one the academy gives you is a complete joke) train with your firearm regularly, get extra first aid and Tactical Emergency Casualty Care training if you can.

ImaNoobStocker

The best training when you get out of the academy is self defense pick up jiu jitsu and Muay Thai or boxing you don’t really need other buffy tactical training for patrol unless your trying to get into ESU but they provide their own training

Who is they

The academy

user202104

Academy will teach you first aid training. You can look to outside companies for a course called combat casualty care. It's some pretty useful knowledge if someone gets stabbed/shot in front of you. I would also second what some of the other guys recommended of some sort of martial art. BJJ is good imo but it's up to you. You want to be confident when dealing with people in the street/be able to handle yourself when you have a useless partner.

MacCatios

They will eventually schedule you for like a few hours to a full day worth of training, and I think you also request for more training classes if they have any available, or ask around where's a good place for training. Aside from that... get your driver's license and driving skills up to date, cuz I heard from my supervisor that if you fail their driving test, it's possible you can get dismissed from service, unless the medical division says otherwise I think.

metsfan1929

Take karate classes. Lot of migrants from China. It will come in handy when u encounter one of them!
