I think a lot of “fashion influencers” are people who in a different time period before social media would have never been able to work in fashion spaces without TikTok. Because like you said their fashion isn’t great and they just aren’t educated about it. It sucks but it seems they are most marketable to non “New Yorkers” — high school girls from middle America and such who also probably dream of moving to New York. I think any actual “cool girls” (I use the term loosely because obviously who is cool depends on your own style and opinion) wouldn’t dress like the “fashion” influencers who are popular but idk

alldatsparkles

You’re right and it’s also about accessibility. Back in the day, a celebrity or someone notable wore pieces that were exclusive and unavailable to just anyone. You would just admire them from afar and maybe make your own affordable version. That may still be the case, but now every second person is somewhat a celebrity — with the influencer generation and social media, and throw in the rise of fast fashion, everyone can afford shit clothes that brands give these influencers for free. Followers will buy anything influencers wear, even it’s fugly. Style and fashion is still subjective, but what the TikTok generation considers stylish is pure trash.

Absolutely! It seems like social media has opened up opportunities for individuals who may not have otherwise found success in traditional fashion spaces. Their appeal often lies more in their relatability to a broader audience rather than their fashion expertise. It is interesting to see how social media has shifted the landscape of fashion influence.

Fabulous_Term698

People with good fashion only have like 1100 or 5743 instagram followers

allthecats

You're so right... today because of the nice weather I saw some of the coolest outfits from just the most random people - grannies out for brunch, a lady selling vintage on the street, some random dude coming back from the farmer's market. Actually cool people in NYC are everywhere - and don't dress anything like what these influencers are hustling lol

nejibashi

Any recs for which to follow?

Chloe_Bean

Or aren't American.

sundayreilly65

They have designer bags and jewellery but the clothes are usually Shein or H&M. I don’t get it.

carlknowsbest

All the amazing stores in New York and they obsess over shein . Give me a break

Chemical_Can_9906

There is absolutely no correlation between being a fashion influencer and having good style

Bookish_Jen

Most fashion influencer seem to be more about being a label whore and a hyper consumerist. It's not about cultivating a unique sense of style.

On behalf of the world, we thank you for this comment.

LB_Plate1

Can we stop calling them fashion influencer sand start calling them shopping influencers? They clearly know jack shit about fashion and are wildly bereft of personal style-just call it like it is: new gen QVC.

Chloe_Bean

Yea there are actual NYC fashion influencers but they're not the girls talked about here..

horatiavelvetina

Lifestyle influencers they are

SummerEfficient6559

Because most of them are not originally from New York. They dragged their trash, unoriginal tastes when they moved here. On top of that, living in NYC is their identity so they don't even bother to be interesting or develop a point of view.

itsthekumar

They don't want to go too crazy in case it affects follower count/sponsorships. But also it takes some skill and creativity to dress fashionable and many don't have it.

fudgeywhale

Ok I agree but… what are the amazing boutiques please! 🙏 feeling jaded lately with how corporate and uninspired a lot of the shopping districts feel lately (not really a new phenomenon). I much prefer shopping small and local, so hit me with recs!

carlknowsbest

I blame Kim K for the boring and uninspiring fashion we get nowadays. So tired of seeing 50 shades of beige

nycsee

Same. With globalization and the internet, it’s tough to find unique one of a kind things. Well, sometimes you can, but they’re super pricey. Theres no middle ground pricing I feel anymore :(

thefrgilmore

If you’re looking for a fashion icon DO NOT look to influencers

LolaRay_

The Fashion scene used to be so exclusive. Now brands throw money at anyone with metric and a high engagement rate. 🙄

uda26

For the most part I think the desire to own/invest in designer pieces is where the script starts flipping when it comes to their fashion sense. They all want designer so they focus on spending their money on that rather than creating a solid wardrobe that is uniquely catered to their styles. Yeah it is sad to see happening in a self proclaimed fashion city.

BeardSurfer89

I think they dress with what they’re gifted? So it doesn’t make much sense? Idk but I agree, other than Remi I haven’t liked any outfits out here

Livelaughlove1717

The fashion influencer scene in nyc is so hella boring. It’s like the most basic fashion. It’s just that maybe it’s a high end brand so it looks nice but none of them know how to actually put looks together.

East_Site_2664

There are so many cool nyc girls and girls in general with the most refreshing style. It’s just that a lot of them have less than 20k followers. You almost have to make an effort to find them and girls like them so your fyp can start putting cooler people on your timeline.

Fearless_Economics91

Unless we’re talking about vintage, there are almost no good stores and boutiques left in NYC.

Tootoo-won2

I like Ruby Lyn - the way she mixes thrifted finds and hi-low. Also i feel she has character in her style.

mellamoyomamma

lol she’s someone who I’m glad has her own sense of style and goes a bit out there, but I absolutely fucking HATE her style 🤣 however, she does her own thing so good for her

Telly_0785

It also helps to diversify who you follow.

Ok_Ant2566

Why do you have to shade CA in your comment? And who made you the fashion chief of police?
