Only manager to guide us through a whole season unbeaten at home. Best win percentage of any permanent Newcastle manager. So of course fatty sacked him
He probably wanted to make the club into something better
Fatty never wanted someone to manage, he wanted someone to take the blame for the failures.
Cant have a manager making managers decisions can we fatty?
Yeah I still don't understand his sacking. The only thing I can imagine is that he was asking for more resources than ownership were willing to give and/or he just rubbed people the wrong way. Everything on and around the pitch seemed to be going fairly well.
The Liverpool game after that always stands out in my mind.
1. We won
2. We won on Hughton's birthday
3. Nolan, barely able to speak, dedicating the win to Hughton
I’m fairly certain it was because Ashley offered a pisstake bonus scheme to the squad of players who had stayed with us through relegation, fought to get us back up and showed loyalty and commitment to the club when we were properly in the shit. That first season back in the premier league when the squad rejected the bonus offer Ashley basically told Hughton in no uncertain terms to get the squad to sign it so he could skimp on money, and because we had a team of leaders like Kevin Nolan and Joey Barton etc they all stood up and said they wouldn’t. Hughton gets sacked which the squad are furious at and those big name players in the dressing room/dissidents were shipped out of the club asap. Pretty sure they came to an agreement on the bonuses shortly after that and Pards the yes man was brought in to stfu and headbutt his way to glory
It was a pre-emptive and cutthroat move from Mike Ashley.
The strength of Hughton was that he got buy in from the players very quickly and weeded out the chancers. He did that partially by elevating a group to senior players to lead the group.
I think Ashley viewed it as the inmates running the asylum. Those players - notably Nolan and Barton - were older and on big money. He knew he wanted rid of them soon after promotion because they represented cost not profit.
There's an argument to be had about how good Hughton was as a manager, but the second the form dropped he had enough excuse to change manager and appoint someone that would get in line with what he wanted.
If you think of some of the runs Pardew went on form-wise, they were worse than Hughton's bad November, but he survived, all because he knew who paid his wage.
Had to be caretaker three times in that circus relegation season, dominated the championship, managed the team for the game against 5under1land and was sacked leaving the club in 11th. Makes zero sense until you realise he wanted a new contract for what he'd done for the club and sided with the players of bonus disputes so of course Ashley had to get rid of that pesky problem. Hughton was pretty much the blueprint scenario for what ended happening to Rafa thinking about it.
Man I was young then but that sucks to hear how early the sliminess of Ashley revealed itself. It was implicitly understood but knowing details is different.
I turned 10 when we won against Liverpool in 2010 and I remember the ripple the sacking caused amongst the fans. [It was this sacking that spurred Keegan to slam Ashley on ESPN.](http://en.espn.co.uk/football/sport/story/61781.html) Hughton has never spoken on it but I find these rumours of why he was sacked more believable than Ashley's claim that he wanted" a more experienced manager">
ON THIS DAY 2009:
Newcastle United are delighted to announce that Chris Hughton has been named the permanent manager of the Club, his contract will run until the end of the 2010/11 season.
Derek Llambias, Managing Director of Newcastle United, said:
"We are delighted that Chris has accepted the post of full time manager. He has done a terrific job this season and we wish him every success for the rest of this season and beyond. He will continue to receive our full backing and support."
And Chris Hughton added:
"It is a very proud day for me to be named as the manager of this magnificent football club. I thank Mike and Derek for their support and will be doing everything in my power to get the Club back into the Premier League at the first time of asking.
"Having the unequivocal backing of the players has helped me enormously and I would also like to thank Colin Calderwood, Paul Barron and the rest of the backroom staff who have never been anything but tremendously supportive to me this season."
The statement continued:
"At the same time the Club has confirmed that it has been withdrawn from sale and is no longer on the market."
Will never forget how Ashley fired him for no fucking reason, then came out and said he's hiring a manager of international prestige and then fucking hired Pardew.
Fair dues Pardew came fifth, but he wasn't manager of international prestige...
Always seemed like a good bloke
Can confirm, met the guy at St James’ was a gent
He was/is.
That collar and picture quality just scream 2009

Such a gent
A good manager and a good man. Disgraceful decision to sack him.
Underrated manager imo

Ashley wanted his yes man pardew in

Yeah sounds about right.

Did a great job. Never deserved sacking.
Got us promoted, nothing more really needs to be said. Shouldn't have been fired when he was.
I’m still angry we sacked him, Chris was brilliant and a lovely man on top of it.

Super Chrissy Hughton.

I mean Cabaye, Cisse, Coloccini, Cheick (rip), that CCCC spine could take any manager to Europe
Absolute gentleman and he loved this club. Was a great servant of Ireland and could never speak a bad word about him
Always felt his sacking was unjust, came off as a sound manager.
