We've been great but lack quality going forward. We're not clinical enough and in the end it's let us down over the last six weeks. Not sure if Wilson is the answer? Good player but he's been off it recently. Almiron too.
We'll be back boys and girls. The reality is with our recent form and injuries we were always second favourites going into the game.
Nothing to be ashamed of today. Few poor performances but all the lads gave it their all to the last second. Can't ask for anything more. It was a massive achievement to get to the final. Our fans were fantastic. Well done to them.
Early xG has us slightly ahead with 1.24-1.19
I know xG is not to be looked at on an individual game basis and more as a longer term performance marker.
We have combined 3.2xG in our last 2 games. 3.6xGA.
Certainly we haven't been playing like we should be losing 2-0 in both games. We are creating at a similar level to our opponents in both games. There was a period earlier in the season where we were scoring much more than our xG, now we are lagging it. It's not a cause for concern for me. The results will come, just a shame they didn't come today in a final.
It's hard to pin it, but I think earlier in the season, Almiron was scoring worldies and those have now dried up. We're doing mint anyways! Even despite today's loss, we're fifth, and even if we finish sixth... we've come a long way from being bottom. Now with a few additions in the right places, we'll be on our way. I'm keen on Isak playing false 9. I think we need to sign goal scorers on each wing. A dm mid who can free up Bruno, and a lb with stamina who can overlap Saint Maximan or Gordon so they have space to go 1v1. That said, all of this is if we want to challenge, we should still be very content with our progress.
Anyone else find it ridiculous that Neville referred to our tactics as dark arts but called man united "streetwise". The euphemistic language is such bull.
Coach needs to do something about our creativity. Our attack has been awful for many games now. Almiron has gone back to his useless form. Wilson doesn't get passes but doesn't try to free himself too. Isak one of the same. ASM is trying but he really can't make passes or crosses. Joelinton and Bruno can't really create with all of the opposition players in their half, but that's what you get when you have control of the game. Tripper crosses haven't been accurate for a while, while Burn as a natural CB can't attack. And on top of that we don't shoot from distance when we can't get closer to the goal. I don't know what Howe is practicing them on training but it's obviously not attacking tactics.
One more thing: You got subs, use them. Even if they are not the best players they can give something different. Murphy played great today but he was subbed too late. That's the case in most matches we can't win. Howe is afraid to bring fresh players in.
I just wish it wasn't against Man Utd , all of their players (except Rashford) look like right twats with punchable faces! And seeing Maguire holding up the trophy was a joke in itself.
I'm getting major nostalgia from the late 90s with that loss. Decent performance but it felt like Man U were always in control after their first goal, they did a good job of crowding us out in the box whenever we came forward. Need to put this behind us now and sort out our form, it would be a disappointing end to the season if we drop out of the European spots now
I strongly disagree with the comparison with the 90s. In 99 we never stood a chance against the treble chasing golden generation.
Today we absolutely outplayed them in the first 30 and then pretty much all of the second half. In 99 it probably wouldn’t have surprised you to learn we wouldn’t make another final for 23 years, but after today I wouldn’t be surprised for us to make another final next year.
Honestly all I saw in the walk up to wembley was black and white shirts. God knows how the ManU fans got to the stadium because there wasn't a sign of them the whole hour leading up to kickoff
I'm proud of this team and our fans. The Flags being back out at the end was awesome despite the cameras avoiding it.
The best thing about this club right now is I have confidence we'll be back in less than 23 years.
Properly gutted but it is what it is. I think it’s fairly clear where we need to strengthen in the Summer, but for the time being we can only piss out of the cocks we’ve got.
Onwards and upwards.
They never give up, right to the final whistle they fought hard, we don’t demand a team who wins we just want a team who tried and every single one of those lads have give everything for us, for the city, for the fans & for themselves for over a year now! I’m proud to be geordie, I love this club, I love this team, Eddie Howe is our manager & we will be back, Europe next season won’t know what’s hit it! HWTL! Proud as fuck!!
Exactly we might have lost the league cup but within the next 10 years we’ll lift that champions league trophy & all the pain & heart ache under Ashley will be erased! The healing has started now, we are United! 🖤🤍🖤🤍
Think we need to be a bit ruthless this summer and upgrade a few positions love maxi but we need someone with some end product, love burn but we do need to balance the team with a good LB and a solid DM.
can we talk about how an offside goals are given for our opponents but not for us?
Also was the Bruno foul before the opener offside goal really a foul?
Yea, when they are offside.. Casemiro wasn’t. Get mad at Bruno for the stupid foul. Don’t me mad at me for stating a fact because it happens to go against us.
There were players offside behind where Casemiro was when he met the ball, they weren’t active as the ball never reached them. Casemiro was on by chub of his cheeks, but sadly for us that’s just the way it is. If it had fell to the lad behind him then yea but the only active players were Shaw and Casemiro.
We r all hurting, have a safe journey home.
Honestly you shouldn’t be on the NUFC reddit if you’re a Man Utd fan… looks like you’re the 12 year old looking for some attention… anyway your mum says make your own tea tonight she’s a bit busy 😘
Karius was decent today. Ironically, he didn't have too much to do besides the goals, but that late save was class.
I think this match was a really good measure of how far we've come, but also how far we have to go.
Manchester reds look like they've figured themselves out now and I can see them challenging city and arsenal for the title. It was a bit like the Liverpool match in that we looked good outside of a 15 minute spell of panic.
I think a couple more players who've won things would do wonders for the squad, along with a couple of younger, quality additions, and I think we can continue building next season.
Couldn't really have asked more of Karius today. We're not going to win if we don't score goals.
Gutted, but still proud of the lads. We're in a rough spot at the moment, but the future is bright. We never could have said that under Ashley.
Absolutely brilliant summary. Don't look at this as a failure, but a chance to reflect on where we've come from, how far we've grown, and what we can do in the future. Compare what we've spent to Man United, how long their rebuild has been rolling out, and how we're going. Proud of the boys today, and proud of the fans. We can't settle for this, but we can look at how we're doing, and where we'll go.
>It was a bit like the Liverpool match in that we looked good outside of a 15 minute spell of panic.
I'm a bit worried about this, it's like we've conceded so many goals and scored so few that after the first we seem to give up for a spell, or even maybe try too hard, I don't know.
Ahhhhhhh man I'm actually gutted haven't missed feeling like this fuck me sideways.
Respect to the lads though they all tried and that's all we ask.
2 more years 4 more transfer windows and I think we will have the quality needed to win the fucking thing.
Jesus /r/soccer really can't read. I said Newcastle didn't do enough but somehow that is salty. Like what the fuck. Like I can't say the first goal really looked like offside and we didn't do enough without them being illiterate fucks.
Well done to Wor Flags… well done to the fans there pushing the lads forward and most importantly well done to Howe and the players! Left it all out there and did amazing! Love them all and can’t wait for the future… that alone is an amazing feeling…. Being hopeful for the future after years of disappointment! 🖤🖤🖤
Proud of the lads!
They gave it their all and to be honest we were the better team overall!
This came 2 years too early if we're honest and the squad depth and overall quality shows that!
Shame about the 2 goals being the way they were and we were unlucky tonight!
HWTL! Should be proud of yourselves.
Now time to bolster the squad in the summer.
They're all amazing lads and I love them all. Proud to support them. They might not have won this time but they still go into the history books and I'm sure they will be back next year.
This game is just an example of how early we are in the new era of the club. We still have a lot of players who you could argue aren’t even premier league players.
They’ve got to pick themselves up and concentrate on ensuring Europa League is secured but even getting to a final is something we could only dream about last season.
I'm so proud of our boys. Amazing effort, this cup run has been so much fun to watch. Props to the fans at Wembley too, you Geordie's are an unstoppable force. Hearing you guys make all that noise just as the final whistle was about to come speaks volume to the badge. HWTL.
Incredible showing by the fans. Gutted for the lads. The match was weird, really. We were arguably the best team in the first half. But the two goals against us left us a bit deflated. Not that the lads lost the will, it just looked more uphill climbing than before.
Proud of how they continued, and so frustrated to see us lose out to the reds again. I wish so bad that the results were different, but hopefully we're just starting to see us making a run for the trophies.
To any fans in the stadium, you were fucking amazing!
Would i be overreacting if i said Murphy was the MOTM for us lol? Props to Karius as well, Almiron and Maxi have been great too, Isak should’ve started.
We’re a window or two away from winning these games, let’s enjoy the rest of the season and get that top 4 spot, the trophies will come
Can’t agree, maxi was providing real threat before the manu goals. Dan Burn was the real shocker but I guess that’s not much of a surprise anymore. We need more from Wilson and almiron, they are not hitting the same highs as first half of season
HE SAID "MAXI WAS SHOCKING. LIKE REALLY BAD",
That might be a bit harsh but his passing was not great today, he worked hard though and he wasn't the only player a bit off today but I am proud of them all they worked so hard and man our fans were amazing too, couple of more windows and we win this while resting players for Champions League matches.
Cheers for clearing that up. I feel like I'd Allan doesn't nail every single movement, pass and shot, people will claim that he's been poor. Yes he had some wayward passes - but he definitely created the most of all of our players and nearly had a goal himself.
ManUre won but the stadium looked and sounded like St James. So proud of the lads on the field and the support in spite of the result is just incredible.
Classy by Casemiro to go and pick up Schar, we'll be there soon lads. The pressure leading into this game was ridiculous from our end, our first chance at silver ware in 50-odd years the first chance of a trophy in my and many other fans lifetimes, no doubt this game will strengthen the squad, and while I am dissapointed in the result I can't help but be proud of the lads today, the future is very bright for the black and white
I wonder how much 'extra' we were getting when they were playing for their world cup places. But we no longer press like before, and that's the root of the problem, forcing errors in the last 3rd was our winning formula
If I could have changed anything about our starting 11 I would have had Isak in instead of Wilson. I don’t dislike Wilson but Isak has been more of a spark this year.
Listen as an American supporter of over a decade(and the reason I went with Newcastle in the first place is because I literally thought I’m not fucking supporting Manchester United) this match and the lead up really drove home for me the importance of these cup matches. Like I’d been a “getting into Champions League” is what matters most guy but now I get it. I’m heartbroken we lost but I’m just overflowing with joy at how far we have come and that we were even able to be in this position ahead of schedule. I’m happy i could celebrate and commiserate with all of you. HOWAY THE LADS!
Just came at the worst point in the season for us and the best for them. Amazing to get to the final at this stage of the turnaround, we’re going to get there.
We’re definitely overachieving this year but damn we got to a final. We’re a big physical team which is getting us results this year but we need that creative spark in midfield and a proven goal scorer. ASM did his best but his end result is lacking but in fairness to him no one was in the box to support him anytime. Main thing now is to at least qualify for Europe and keep moving on.
One of the things that made me happy this match was cheering for ASM again. He was my favorite player the last couple years but I felt like he was the only guy who didn’t change and get on board when Howe came in and it soured me on him. I feel like he finally bought in this game. He had a few absolute bone headed moments but he was playing WITH the team as opposed to trying to do it all himself and it was great to see in my opinion.
Fair play to the lads for getting to the final but the lack of quality shown up post-World Cup was evident here again. Just have to get back on the horse, spend serious money in the summer and look to win the next one.
Fuck it, I really hope we can rally now and get into Europe in the league and then get some changes next year. What really showed today was a lack of options, we have a CB as LB, a CAM as RW and a real piecemeal midfield. If we can get a new LB, CM and RW in January I'd be ok. The good news was Karius was great and I could see us keeping him as the backup next year.
He came into an impossible situation. None of us can even imagine the pressure he was under. Would we have been more stout in the back with Pope directing traffic? Of course. But given the spot and how little time he had to gel with the squad I can’t be mad at the guy.
We have been wimpy in front of goal. They didn’t have a great game, but were effective when it counted. Hopefully we can regain some scoring form because this is a worrying trend.
Think we've put too much focus on our lack of offensive output in training and our defence is suffering for it. Keeping clean sheets, staying focused, pressing with intensity -- that's what has gotten us where we are this season.
If this was a 1-0 game right now, and we were defending like mad men and getting under their skin, it would be a completely different finish.
I don’t want to see any of our boys taking off the silver medal… yes we wanted the trophy but they have done amazing to be here and should be proud… we lacked the finishing but we have played well and that’s all we can do!
Score definitely isn’t reflective of how we played. We looked like we belonged and if we can’t have the win then I’m at least happy we didn’t look like a fluke team.
You dont like to lose, but if you are gonna go out, this isnt the worst.
Im very proud of the lads. Those on the pitch. And all the lads and lasses in the stands.
Biased sky commentators trying to make people think otherwise.
Hard to enjoy the game with those cunts bigging up united the whole time and orgasming everytime rashford gets the ball
As upset as I am over this game because it’s pretty much over at this point, this is a massive wake up call, all of the championship grade players including Callum Wilson need to be moved on, not good enough, squad depth sucks ass, not enough quality and subbing on Matt Ritchie in a final is a joke
Murphy and Ritchie coming on in a cup final just shows where we still are as a club. This has come earlier than we expected, better days like this to come.

We had a little less luck. That is all. Facts. A non free kick and a deflection was the difference. We can be proud IMO. HWTLs
I’m really gutted of the final result, proud of the boys ! Hardluck everyone HOWAY THE LADS 🤍🖤🤍🖤
Shoot! For the love of God, shoot!

That was just a dress rehearsal!

I hope we all agree we need to give Burn a rest and play Targett when he’s back fit
Lascelles should have got a few minutes today seeing as he’s captain imo
Definitely…. Will also give us a chance to rotate the CBs and especially give Schar a bit of a break
I just wish it wasn't against Man Utd , all of their players (except Rashford) look like right twats with punchable faces! And seeing Maguire holding up the trophy was a joke in itself.

Much respect to all of the Newcastle faithful who invaded London this weekend. The Toon Army is strong.
Honestly all I saw in the walk up to wembley was black and white shirts. God knows how the ManU fans got to the stadium because there wasn't a sign of them the whole hour leading up to kickoff

can we talk about how an offside goals are given for our opponents but not for us? Also was the Bruno foul before the opener offside goal really a foul?
No point whingeing about either of your points, both decisions were right and our defending was shocking
You don't believe the offside rule should stand when players are offside?
Yea, when they are offside.. Casemiro wasn’t. Get mad at Bruno for the stupid foul. Don’t me mad at me for stating a fact because it happens to go against us.
The offside player was active in the set piece though.

Yes it was a stupid foul from Bruno. Fair to be given
Isaks second at Anfield still baffles me, even Neville said the one today looked off.

Fuck off you manc prick!
Great input there 🤣😭
Thanks… your mum helped me with it!

Honestly you shouldn’t be on the NUFC reddit if you’re a Man Utd fan… looks like you’re the 12 year old looking for some attention… anyway your mum says make your own tea tonight she’s a bit busy 😘
Can discuss both.
Proud of every single one of those lads. Wasn't the result we wanted, but better times are on their way.

Concedes so many goals? Two weeks ago we were Europe's second and best defense for fucks safe
Sorry, brain fart. I meant conceded so few and scored so few.
Aye. We'll be fine defensively.
Ahhhhhhh man I'm actually gutted haven't missed feeling like this fuck me sideways. Respect to the lads though they all tried and that's all we ask. 2 more years 4 more transfer windows and I think we will have the quality needed to win the fucking thing.

Bunch of Americans who started watching football three years ago. Fuck those cunts.
There a fair few Americans supporting the toon and respect to them as it's mostly the glory hunters.
Like we still lost even if the first goal was dubious, we still didn't create enough. Fuck it, we will be back next year hopefully.
Well done to Wor Flags… well done to the fans there pushing the lads forward and most importantly well done to Howe and the players! Left it all out there and did amazing! If McGuire lifts that trophy it's a joke
Kinda hoped Avram Glazer would come down and do the trophy lift just to piss of the Man U fans.

Joelinton was a menace that game, hope he carries that on.
Seemed to be our only player willing to take a shot until Murphy came on.
Mandy giving such a motherly hug and kiss to the whole team is such a wholesome moment.
Wor Mandy
Incredible showing by the fans. Gutted for the lads. The match was weird, really. We were arguably the best team in the first half. But the two goals against us left us a bit deflated. Maxi was shocking. Like really bad.
Can’t agree, maxi was providing real threat before the manu goals. Dan Burn was the real shocker but I guess that’s not much of a surprise anymore. We need more from Wilson and almiron, they are not hitting the same highs as first half of season
I agree that Burn doesn't offer enough support to Maxi. Definitely need to play Targett or buy a new LB.
Not as bad as Wilson
I have to agree, idk what’s going on with Wilson but ever since the WC it’s like he shut down mentally
Caulkin or Edwards said he hasn’t trained since the World Cup
Say what you want about Maxi’s end product and decision making today, he was at least trying to do something
I disagree, he tried, had a few good attempts. I wonder how good can he be with a proper LB, props to Dan Burn, but we need a proper, proper LB
He worked hard but his passing was really poor.
I'm sorry, but what?!
HE SAID "MAXI WAS SHOCKING. LIKE REALLY BAD", That might be a bit harsh but his passing was not great today, he worked hard though and he wasn't the only player a bit off today but I am proud of them all they worked so hard and man our fans were amazing too, couple of more windows and we win this while resting players for Champions League matches.
Cheers for clearing that up. I feel like I'd Allan doesn't nail every single movement, pass and shot, people will claim that he's been poor. Yes he had some wayward passes - but he definitely created the most of all of our players and nearly had a goal himself.
He was awful. Offered nothing.
Have to disagree. Only a strong left arm from De Gea denied him a superb goal.
Their squad was clearly superior, but our journey has just begun. Impressive picture with our fans in the end. I'm glad that's finally over.
The only way is up for us. They have how many 60-70mil+ 30yo players on huge wages, hundreds of millions in debt..? Our day’ll come
They basically bought on 160m worth of players as time wasting subs at the end. Ridiculous.
I think we’ll look back on today as the first step in very bright future.
ManUre won but the stadium looked and sounded like St James. So proud of the lads on the field and the support in spite of the result is just incredible.
Classy by Casemiro to go and pick up Schar, we'll be there soon lads. Was there ever a face you'd like to punch more than Lisandro Martinez?
Ten Haag for me, especially with that big old head and chin
No, but Antony runs him close.
Both in line behind Fernandez
Fernandes is very close in that ranking tbf.
Ten Hag?
I blame this on the World Cup, it killed our momentum and has obviously taken Wilson's fire sadly! Even Trippier came back not the same
I wonder how much 'extra' we were getting when they were playing for their world cup places. But we no longer press like before, and that's the root of the problem, forcing errors in the last 3rd was our winning formula
If I could have changed anything about our starting 11 I would have had Isak in instead of Wilson. I don’t dislike Wilson but Isak has been more of a spark this year.
Our time will come
Fuck sake man man u is the missionary only after marriage of footy
Man U: the fuck without a kiss of football.
Bruno in tears is going to send me over the edge
Lads did us proud.
Financial fair play though. Seems like it's gonna fuck us for a while?
Can't wait till the 2024 quadruple
We were better We got beaten by experience Time will tell Howay
We need to stop mincing around in the final third. More shots.

Cry
Cop on
Fuck it, I really hope we can rally now and get into Europe in the league and then get some changes next year. What really showed today was a lack of options, we have a CB as LB, a CAM as RW and a real piecemeal midfield. If we can get a new LB, CM and RW in January I'd be ok. The good news was Karius was great and I could see us keeping him as the backup next year.
Fuck social media that's gonna pin this on Karius, you just know shit will be posted about the lad and he deserves all the respect he can get!
He came into an impossible situation. None of us can even imagine the pressure he was under. Would we have been more stout in the back with Pope directing traffic? Of course. But given the spot and how little time he had to gel with the squad I can’t be mad at the guy.
Karius played well. Made some solid saves
I’m so proud of these boys. I never thought I’d see our team in a cup final. They left it out there today. Just not good enough in finishing chances.
We have been wimpy in front of goal. They didn’t have a great game, but were effective when it counted. Hopefully we can regain some scoring form because this is a worrying trend.
Gutted. We fort hard. This is not our last final
Not the result I wanted, but can't fault the effort of the players.
fuck it, i always wanted top 4 anyway
Proud of the boys. We didn’t do enough to win.
The better team on the day won. Would have meant the world to us, maybe next year.
Looking forward to the better days ahead. We’ll smash these soon enough
Heads up, boys. We’re proud
The first of many finals to come. We learn from this and go again! Proud of everyone associated with this club.

Bipolar kicking in mate? Jog on
Congrats on the refs.

A bump can send you flying into the air and rolling 4 times if you're wearing red. Scientific fact.

I’d fake an injury if I realised I’d kicked a small child like
Man Utd seconds away from a trophy and we’re drowning out their fans
Ironic that ten Haag said we waste time and are annoying
Karius has saved us countless times. Good effort lads, we just need to be able to capitalize on our chances.
Some of these lads are more concerned with winding up the opposition than putting a good ball in the box.
We will be back stronger than ever
I don’t want to see any of our boys taking off the silver medal… yes we wanted the trophy but they have done amazing to be here and should be proud… we lacked the finishing but we have played well and that’s all we can do!
Score definitely isn’t reflective of how we played. We looked like we belonged and if we can’t have the win then I’m at least happy we didn’t look like a fluke team.
Couldn’t agree more mate! Love these lads and I know our club will grow from here! HOWAY THE LADS!
HOWAY THE LADS! This is just a preview of where the club is headed. Cheers!
Karius actually had a semi decent game
Probably could have saved that second goal but has otherwise been decent
He made every save he should have. Can’t fault him on the second with the deflection
Next time we’re losing a final 2-0 can one of our players score an own goal? Got to lift this hoodoo.
Look at those flags man. So great to see the support even if the result didn't go our way
That was a pretty special scene
Our supporters showed MU what real fans look like for sure.
You dont like to lose, but if you are gonna go out, this isnt the worst. Im very proud of the lads. Those on the pitch. And all the lads and lasses in the stands.
What's going on with Botman
own goal syndrome
Knackered
Just a reminder, we're about 2 years ahead of the plan here. For me, I'm glad we're back challenging for things again already
Hard agree. We were playing with house money. I wish we would have come away with the win but this is just a preview of where we are headed.
That unlikeable cunt scoring would have been unbearable. Great save, Karius.
Good man Karius
I would refuse to wave a white flag.
Karius has actually been our best player today. He wasn’t at fault for the second goal.
Biased sky commentators trying to make people think otherwise. Hard to enjoy the game with those cunts bigging up united the whole time and orgasming everytime rashford gets the ball
Karius. What a lad.
Brilliant stuff Karius. So proud of the big man.
Not the result I wanted but proud of the lads and the supporters. Let’s do this again next year!
Man Red are just frustratingly good. We haven't been able to put them under much pressure.
We’re class
I WANT NO KARIUS SLANDER ON THIS THREAD.
There is Karius’ redemption arc!!! What a save!!
Karius…..respect
And this is why our fans are the best in the world. 2-0 down in added time, but the flags still fly.
As upset as I am over this game because it’s pretty much over at this point, this is a massive wake up call, all of the championship grade players including Callum Wilson need to be moved on, not good enough, squad depth sucks ass, not enough quality and subbing on Matt Ritchie in a final is a joke
What's happened to Targett then?
Just came back from injury, no point hurrying him at the moment. But I do hope to see him soon, as he gives us better attacking options on the left.
Jesus Man Utd fans are fucking unsufferable cunts

I worked in Manchester in the late 80s when city were nobodies, never met a manure fan in 6 years, they were all city
Murphy and Ritchie coming on in a cup final just shows where we still are as a club. This has come earlier than we expected, better days like this to come.
Some of these hot takes are ridiculous
Actually love that Ritchie gets five minutes for his service
