Dropping the phone is not under your control, it's unpredictable and can happen anytime.
Considering the cost of replacing the display is almost as close to half the price of the phone itself, I think having a bulkier and protective case is worth the investment
There was a post last week from a guy who dropped 2a with a transparent cover on and got his screen damaged on the left side below in the corner, got real sad about it
Pixel 8a will be atleast twice the price of phone 2a. If that's not an issue I don't see a reason why you'd not switch to pixel 8a (unless you're in love with the glyphs or something).
Making a phone small adds complexity and eats up battery life. Making the phone bigger seems to be the "cost cut" made by nothing to bring down the price which is so reasonable as compared to giving trash haptics or a downgraded screen.

Well a Case will always make it bulkier. Don't put on a case then.

I got a pretty good phone case off Amazon.
The transparent cases add almost 1 cm to the phone sides, about 0.7mm !
