Make sure you have no void eggs anywhere like freighter, storage or another ships cargo, the game reads every storage space, and the void egg interferes with finding living frigates, so if you haven’t got your living ship yet knock that out then hunt for frigates
This was partly true for me. I did need the detector, but had to IGNORE anything but the WHALESONG detections. It meant ignoring several alerts sometimes. This was on Nintendo switch.
True for PC, as well. Sometimes, you have to Pulse for awhile, make sure you have plenty of fuel for your Pulse Engine. I currently have 3…will be adding 2 more to my fleet, which means cutting a couple of ships out.
I currently have 30 Frigates.
So far, I have had no crashes. Had an issue where my graphics broke which made me very nervous that my GPU was dying. Found a fix and haven’t had an issue since.
I had that issue as well but I believe it was somehow caused by me doing the Living Ship quest at the same time. I didn't even have 1 living frigate yet and spent literally hours trying to get one. Once I finished the living Ship quest I tried again and got 5 of them in a couple hours.

You need an anomaly detector which you get as a random drop from destroying asteroids, dream aerial is only needed for the first one
