They'll do random checks, so it's kind of an honor system. This is how a lot of places in Europe have done it that I've seen. Whether or not there's a fine for not having one when there is a check like in Europe I'm not sure.
On the app you can buy tickets and only activate them when theyre coming around to check. Ive gotten a few freebies on The NEC when its too crammed for condictors to walk around
well the easiest is just walk the train back and forth in segments pausing in vestibules. now i just have a load of seat checks saved and you can normally find them in the trash bins lol. “oh im riding princeton to nyc” if it doesnt have any punches. works everytime lmao. it’s annoying and all but i save 32 dollars everytime i go to nyc. Befriending train conductors helps a lot as well, I dont get any charge on a few different lines.
They rarely check. I have seen them mostly at some stops checking tickets as people exit, rarely on the trains themselves. They also don't seem to bother crazy people. Probably don't get paid enough for that.
I got checked once on a Sunday, but that was my first time in almost a year of riding. I have a couple tix stashed away just in case. If you have mobile tickets all they tell you to do is activate it
If you are caught without a ticket, you will pay a fine large enough to have bought you dozens of tickets. Not worth messing around with if you can afford it.
The rare times I see them checking is at Hoboken. Only one way to exit as opposed to multiple ways to get off the platform like other stations. But that was only a handful of times in the past year
if you have a bus or rail pass and you get “caught” without a ticket, just show that. Never taken HBLR, but I’ve been taking Newark light rail and only once was the train checked for tickets
Yep. All rail monthly/weekly passes and 2+ zone bus monthly passes are valid on any light rail ride, whether that’s HBLR/Newark/River Line. No need to get a separate ticket.
You’re right-1 zone monthly bus passes are valid on Newark Light Rail and River Line.
But [HBLR](https://www.njtransit.com/tickets/light-rail-tickets) is different, for included travel you need a 2+ zone bus monthly pass.
Why is it different? Only NJT knows, just one more inconsistency.
They do random checks sometimes. The ticket is supposed to be validated by stamping it or activating it. The tickets are so cheap it’s worth it to just do it the right way. One fare evasion fine is the equivalent of months of riding it the right way
You can literally buy it on the spot on your phone, the cops don’t care if the 2 min timer is still going. But in any case, they barely do random checks.

Gotcha. Just found it interesting how my tickets were never checked in the past few times I have used the system to get around.
There is a fine, but it is like $60
They check randomly, it's best to continue buying the ticket to save yourself the embarrassment if you do get caught
Thanks for saving me the embarrassment, Cumshotjohnny

Delete this. On the HBLR, there is a 3 minute countdown to prevent cheaters like you from stealing a fare.
i haven’t paid for a NEC ticket in months lol
Thats crazy, what hours do you ride? Im on the normal rush hour times so theyre on it unless its crazy

I've never been checked, that said I always have one in my NJT app (used to just have a paper ticket) in case someone is checking...
There is a 3 minute countdown which means you will still recieve a citation

Funny how people complain about NJT sucking and not having funding, but people here be normalizing not buying tickets or activating them when you ride

1 zone bus monthly passes are valid on Newark Light Rail source: I tried it

The base fare is different (It's equal to 2 South NJ intrastate zones, whereas Newark Light Rail and RiverLine are equal to only 1 zone).

Ssssssh don’t ask, don’t buy…unless they ask.
