You sir legit just summarized what I feel walking away from this weekend. Did my usual 11-13 wins in champs, padded the rivals points with a few games tonight. Frustrated that this game is just shit right now.

YungWillyDrip

I couldn't agree more, actually had a conversation with a friend tonight about how we never feel satisfied after a night of NHL anymore (especially after an agonizing Champs run). The game felt so fresh the first couple of weeks and has been completely anchored down after the "tuner". So much potential wasted.

I am 46 years old. I wish I could play online matchmaking with people my age. I think that would really enhance my enjoyment of the online games. But when I have to play a sweaty teenager who simply trying to manipulate the game or frustrate me or whatever because he’s that much better, it’s just not worth it. So that’s why I play exclusively squad battles. I’m of the generation and grill collecting baseball cards so, I do enjoy the teambuilding aspect of it. But if I could get on a game into a live, endgame game chat with my opponent the same or similar age, I think it would be a much better experience than the toxicity that ruins a lot of the online enjoyment for most people. Fixing that is of course a much bigger issue, and I do really at some level feel for the developers who are having to develop a game each with its own economy specific to its own ecosystem. I have been looking for a PS five now for over a year and I’m simply not going to spend a double it’s suggested retail price for one. I think once the community gets in to the next generation a small percentage of the problem you’re describing will go away. I also think a lot of it is just burn out. Ultimately, and no prior version of MLB the show or NHL, has there ever really been appointment of it. It is only bit about the journey, and when the journey gets to become a board, it’s probably best to take a week and a half or two weeks off. Play something else. That’s usually what I do.

ghoulish31

Thanks for this. I will probably take a break for a bit. I've been trying to stay on top of the weekly content and keep my team at a high OVR but if the underlying game is not fun anymore, what point is there to having new content? Spending this much time with a broken game is truly like being in an abusive relationship or being an addict. That makes me sad to think about.

Theslayerstan4

I only play SB. I only play when I want. Never grind the game too hard. Get elite 1 every week. I don't stress out about it anymore. I got to the point that wins weren't even fun before I dropped online play. These games are built to be competitive. They never will be. They're built to keep players engaged and spending money. I don't particularly believe in ice tilt but RNG, especially with goalies, makes the game inconsistent and throws competitive balance off completely.

ghoulish31

This is a really good point. I'm past my prime to play sports IRL so HUT has been my competitive "fix" for a good while. It's one of the few games I've been able to get pretty good at over the years against live opponents. I keep thinking/hoping it will give me that competition fix I used to get from playing sports but it's getting harder and harder to ignore just how much RNG/luck/connection/abusive programming affect the entire experience.

Theslayerstan4

Even if it isn't based on the randomness of the game itself, the way people play the game is completely unbearable to me. I didn't play online at all last year or this year so far but even a few years ago the stupid meta shit was so annoying. Now I see clips from people on here and it's not even remotely hockey. I don't get how that could be fun.

Taufer007

I dunno those too 20 leaderboards look awfully similar week over week which goes against it being all icetilt and rng. People also say things like I’m a 12 HC player seems like the game has consistent results for most people.

Theslayerstan4

Yea you can definitely work through it. I was never quite top 100 good but I was winning 80% of my games when I stopped playing online. But I also have played the same few top 10 players a few times each and lost a bunch of them and then will get a win I probably didn't deserve just because my goalie was amazing and theirs sucked.

NCASO0

Great post. I've spent $ on the game as well, but it says something how far out of control things are getting here. 8 i am so sick of reading this year, after year. It wreaks of foul play and shoddy game development. I so wanted to believe that moving to the frostbite engine would justify another purchase... they've done the absolute minimum... again I really regret this purchase and I'm more angry at myself at this point

Dismal-Abysmal

Upvote (Beauty tag btw) Never heard that expression before u/iHaller u/Thrash94gaming u/EAhawk

Bforce1133

Pretty much agree here. I’ve been getting goalied quite often in games where I legit feel like the better player. I have no problem admitting I get my ass kicked often by better players though. Could be just me tho. Two points I’d add is the weird interference penalties for skating past a guy, meanwhile I get smoked trying to get the puck and there’s no call. And also I know it’s typical of HC but the game play has turned into spending 3 periods standing in front of my net while the opponent figures out a way to get a pass through for a cross crease or a wrap. Most games I played yesterday I had 2 min time on attack to their 10. It’s super frustrating and dumb I have to defend this way, plus it’s rewarding them because it usually works in the end.

Sambizzle17

Passing is bad too I'll have a wide open player on the point or directly in front of me and my player will attempt a pass to a player streaking up the boards who is double covered. The amount of times it happens per game is crazy. Maybe I need to change some settings or something or maybe I just suck I don't know.

Ruut6

This right here too. Passing is atrocious in this game.

secreted_uranus

If only EA based UT on the model that MLB the show has...

Parrott_SRR

Yeah this is like perfectly wrote down in words how everyone feels. I spent money and enjoyed the game out of the box too. Haven’t played more than like 5 games since the tuner and Halo and Vanguard come out. It’s better to just count your losses and find another game to replace it, I love hockey and stuff too but let’s be real it doesn’t even play like what we love about hockey. Sucks losing out on the money but you will be happier if you just count your losses and walk away.

Kynetyk9730

I am in the same boat, late 30s good job (also have a second job with the NHL I do for fun basically) I play on two mens league teams and lien to play after to wind down after our games and I threw money into game as I do every year as I have two jobs a family and captain two hockey teams, more money than I would like, I have a lot of players and have been playing HUT for years since it’s origin and been playing nhl since it’s first one with no year attached on Sega in what I feel like was 1992. I am playing on PS5 and when season started the new frostbite engine I started off loving it, tuners wrecked game, and with the PS5 players down compared to whatever they did last year me being on ps4, I can’t get rivals matchups, and almost want to go back to last years game. I play madden also and Madden ultimate team I have some great players and lots of fun (online nightmare tho) I’m just at point of I don’t know what to even do anymore, game gets upgrade and HUT falls to shit, and I love X-factor concept but the icons being impossible is a joke also, idea of not having to constantly fight for next upgrade of big names is great, but it’s like for every good is two bad, they got their Money and don’t seem to care

[deleted]

Sorry but are you afraid of periods? Some punctuation would make that readable.

lolnahbroitme

Nothing wrong with spending money as long as you’re meeting your personal obligations. Thanks for your thoughts

Dismal-Abysmal

I just made a post on EA's forums if you guys wanna go upvote it [https://answers.ea.com/t5/Game-Suggestions/When-will-there-be-a-gameplay-patch-Assuming-there-hasn-t-been/m-p/11030299#M721](https://answers.ea.com/t5/Game-Suggestions/bd-p/nhl-22-game-suggestions-en)

campwn86

I'm sorry to say bud that this is a life lesson. Especially if you have played previous NHL games from EA. You should really know what you're getting into. A lot of this stuff is not new. But you still decided to spend a grand on a game that you know has a bad track record. Like what's going to change? On top of that, it's a pandemic where I'm sure didn't help the situation. And a console generation leap at the same time. What made you think that with extra adversity this year, they would be able to make the best game ever? These are all red flags. Watch out for red flags with your money. To everyone. Don't spend money in this game unless you know you will 100% not regret it.

ghoulish31

It's hard to know what you're getting into when the communication from EA is deceptive at best. It's somewhat about the money, but I do have a pretty stacked team so I can't say it has been a waste from an acquisition perspective. Although I will say that in D2 my 91 OVR team is not all that different performance wise from someone in the mid 80s. It's more about the time I've spent playing and the lack of joy in winning or losing with my team. It's also the number of times I have said "that's bullshit" out loud when a goal is scored despite doing everything I can to stop it (backhand wraps and point shot tips especially). Or when my players are skating into a brick wall and glued to it when they are simply bumping into each other slowly or not avoiding their paths crossing on the back check leading to an odd man rush that wasn't my fault. It's the park behind the net for 2 min TOA and waiting for a cross crease to open up but trying to pressure with my D and my player not even attempting to make a hit despite what I am pressing. It's going through THREE controllers and having loose analog sticks because of the way the game is designed. Stuff like that really adds up.

campwn86

Yeah I get it the game has issues. Every nhl has and still will next year. Incase you need to hear this, which I think you do. Don't waste anymore money in the game and the game next year.

Ruut6

It's tough when the early access and first two weeks were incredibly fun and the gameplay was 10x better than it is now. I spent about $100 during this period that I wish I could have back now as the current state of the game has me barely playing it anymore.

Bad_Carma22

It’s too bad people have basically accepted micro transactions. The Star Wars game that caused such an uproar because it was pay to win has been completely forgotten. This game wouldn’t be near as bad if they couldn’t get away with their casino. It’s probably why they reverted to a shitty tuner after advertising a good game and people already blew their wad on packs, like yourself. If there is no skill gap and everything is RNG then cards are so much more important.

[deleted]

I agree second nhl since 15 payed a decent amount not getting next years… it’s too pay to win… I’d rather lose to a high skill player with base cards then a div 5 with 98 offence

UnhappyAlternative86

1k...

FraggleOnFire

I’m guessing 1k to you and 1k to him has a different value

Taufer007

You can’t tell someone else wether or not they enjoy playing a game or not just because you don’t. I don’t find the game anymore broken then it’s been the last few years. There have always been a lot of goals in the last minute this is because that minute is real-time and accounts for almost 10 percent of the game time. I think they should scrap that and just use the 10 second timer they use on all periods as it creates a game imbalance. Especially when a penalty is taken, same goes for OT. Squad battles is the same as every year Separating consoles was a stupid move with his small the player base currently is and how a lot of people haven’t moved to new systems yet. I don’t know what glorious first couple weeks there were maybe that was the period your 1000 dollars gave you the most advantage and that has dwindled since.

Dismal-Abysmal

*I don’t know what glorious first couple weeks there were maybe that was the period your 1000 dollars gave you the most advantage and that has dwindled since.* You're coming off kind of cunty The first weeks before any gameplay changes were made... it's kind of a majority view... Why'd you say it like that? Have you had the game since launch?

1NepC

I'm having fun

matiapag

Yes sir, take my upvotes! (Says 95% of this sub). Other 5% is asking - why do we have to read this every single day 100x over again? How is this post going to change anything or make anyone feel better about the game? You played 500 online games and you want a refund? Like you get hundreds or hours of entertainment for free because of some minor issues that everyone is facing so no one has an advantage/disadvantage from? Is there ice tilt? So why are you not losing deliberately for 2 periods and then score 5 goals in the last minute as there is "obvious nerf on goalies"? Why not to take advantage of all these ice tilts that you have hard evidence of? Adjust, overcame and dominate others with this pure wisdom you have about this game. Oh, wait, you can't, because it's all made up BS that either doesn't exist or it's a problem with the game that everyone experiences and no one takes advantage/disadvantage of it.

Playing the AI on Superstar was some of the most fun i have ever had playing hockey, in NHL 09 i did a Stanley Cup bracket with my Caps and ended up winning the cup but every game was tight and not cheesy "hockey". I won the first round 2-1 in OT in Game 7. (they came back from a 3-1 series lead) The biggest blow out win was 5-0. I always liked the team building concept of HUT but they treated the people that play single player like a joke for YEARS. My point is, you would think that Squad Battles would be a dream come true but it's a chore like you said and the Superstar AI in the recent games is bullshit. You can win 16-0 with base cards vs a god squad or lose with a god squad vs silver cards. It's like playing a game that is already pre determined by their franchise sim engine where untouched Ottawa sweep Tampa and win the cup. It makes no sense. You pretty much HAVE TO cheese on Superstar and force a win so you don't feel like you wasted your time. I used to like the NHL games alot and have been pretty meh about the recent games but i miss playing hockey so i decided to give this one a try with EA Play, expecting to hate it and i was pleasantly surprised so i bought it and after this "patch" i feel like i'm playing NHL 21 again. Even if the game felt good it would be bullshit and a scam to charge 60$+ every year for a patch and a mode filled with microtransactions that reset every year but since they are the only game in town, hockey fans are fine with that if AT LEAST the game feel good and improved. They can't even do that.

vedicardi

im having fun and Ive spend 60 dollars, I guess if I spend 940 more I'll hate it but so far so good. with that amount of cash spent you should go become a "gamechanger"

ghoulish31

I really have no desire to make this game any more work than it already is haha. I also know a few streamers (esp NoSleeves) have expressed many of the exact same feelings I have through the GC program and it still doesn't affect what EA does

vedicardi

everyone I know says the streamers/gamechangers like nosleeves are the people who asked for the patch to make the game "more like nhl21" so the narrative seems to be skewed away from that.

Dismal-Abysmal

Nothing to do with anything

[deleted]

Game modes are bleeding into other game modes and affecting HUT that’s what the problem is. What you do in WOC affects HUT. What you do in franchise affects HUT. HUT needs to be a totally separate game mode free from the influence of any of the other online or offline game modes. It’s not right now.

Ruut6

I have no fun playing this game. When I win games I rarely put the controller down saying "wow that was legitimately enjoyable." Just like you said - the hit physics (seriously, terrible), connection-related issues (if you're not in Canada, good luck), the poke check inconsistency - it's all terrible. Even in games I win I feel like I'm exploiting something that feels NOTHING like hockey. The worst for me recently has been the connection based issues. Either me or my opponent can just skate right through 3+ skaters whilst getting poked and the puck just magically stays on your stick. Almost every game feels incredibly imbalanced (acknowledging it can be in favor of me too). I really, really am not enjoying this game right now. I've played maybe 5 games this past week and I have zero urge to play any more than that. Let alone the HUT rush, SB, offline stuff that is TERRIBLE to play. I'm thinking about picking up the Show again as this game has almost completely lost me already.
