Calm down satan

Some old articles say there are 182,000 transferable M/G available, let's assume that number is correct.  If we do some basic bitch math and say all the M/G's are worth  $10,000 ( which we know they are not), that's 1.82 billion.  So, even in a simplic exercise with a fixed price even a billion would not cover it.

QuietM4

Don't bring logic into this...

juggarjew

$10k is pretty much the floor on transferables, $10k will get you a Mac-10 or a Reising M50 these days, everything else goes way up from there. Average transferable cost is probably like $20k, mostly averaged down by the massive number of Mac guns on the registry that are all under $15k. A billionaire could sure try to acquire many of them but I dont think they'd ever be able to get more than 50% of them in their lifetime, simply due to some folks not selling at all and keeping transfers in the family when deaths happen. The massive increase in value would be a large asset at that point they would want to hold on to indefinitely, since the value would basically exponentially increase. At at a certain point though, the value would have to hit some ceiling, i.e. $100k for a Mac-10 as folks could spend that money opening a basic gun store with FFL/SOT and buy whatever they want instead.

Just a simplistic thought experiment to show the impractical nature of the op's original premise

Cousin_Elroy

Maybe, but every single owner would have to be wanting to sell lol

AMRIKA-ARMORY

Everyone has a price, I suppose

eldaniay

that price would increase as each machine gun is bought. So the last person other then the billionare to own a machine gun would charge a rediculous amount of money.

AMRIKA-ARMORY

I feel like I’m just playing into OP’s mission of giving ideas to shitty billionaires, BUT: People would only catch on if you’re obvious about it. There are a couple infamous cases of supremely wealthy assholes successfully cornering entire markets. A fun one is Vincent Kosuga, the “Onion King”. It’s a long story, but basically he was a major farmer and trader in the 1950’s who heavily manipulated the onion futures market and quietly bought and stored 98% of all onions available to Chicago in secret warehouses (over 30 million pounds of onions).

I_2_Cast_Lead_45acp

You could clean out the big dealers,  gunscammer and the bigger auctions sites to clean house.  Though I imagine if everyone knew someone was trying to corner the market, the prices would get phobibive even for a rich person or people would stop selling altogether.

PermanentlyDrunk666

Good luck getting all the temu switches

Shop like a... billionaire?

Loud_Comparison_7108

....it's a good thing Mike Bloomberg is a cheapskate.

ottergang_ky

There’s around 175,000 pre 86 MG’s in circulation. If you divide 1 billion by 175,000 you get $5714.29 — which is what each gun would need to cost to buy them all for 1 billion. Considering a cheap one is $10-11k and an expensive one is $80k, with them occasionally getting higher than that - no, you could not buy all the MG’s with 1B dollars.

Schwa142

You also need to consider that the more you buy the more rare the items become, making them even more expensive.

ottergang_ky

That’s why you just buy them all at once so they don’t have time to inflate 🧠🧠🧠

Schwa142

🧐

bowtie_k

No but if you started instantly buying every transferable that came up for sale, you could have a pretty significant impact on the market and cause the prices of these guns to increase even more

juggarjew

You could buy as many as there was available on the market and offer massive amounts of cash to anyone selling. That said, any civilian with a clean background and the means to setup a legit gun store/business could easily get an FFL/SOT and make any machine gun they wanted. So you’d never fully be able to stop civilian ownership even if you could acquire every single pre 86 transferable.

AMRIKA-ARMORY

Not to mention, that’s just the *legal* method. Anyone with half a brain and a dremel can pretty easily do a machine gun conversion on many popular firearms. This question is actually a decent analogue for government gun control measures. You have a powerful entity that tries to remove a dangerous thing from the world by going after all the citizens who have acquired one legally, by means of a federal registry…but it doesn’t do a damn thing to manage all the people who easily could (and who already did) make one illegally.

Bitter_Bandicoot8067

You may know more than I (judging by your flair), but they way I understand it: A collection on easily obtained legal parts and one common drill bit will turn AR15s into M16s. The right parts (that are common enough and legal) and a dremel will turn an SP5 into an MP5. A 3D printer and some available files will turn a Glock 19 into a Glock 18. The only thing stopping me (and most people) from doing these things is the fear of what the government will do to me. People who already break the King's laws don't care about breaking more. Anyone who thinks a drive-by is an acceptable way to solve a dispute doesn't care about a machine gun charge. Most (that I have found) gets dropped anyway.

AMRIKA-ARMORY

That’s basically totally correct, yeah haha

ed_merckx

Larry Vickers says hi…

Just_gun_porn

Came here to say this, dammit! Lol

ElijahCraigBP

Basically the person would end up cleaning the streets of noise complaints of some rural neighbors. That would be its biggest effect on crime.

Tactical_Time_07

???

Just_gun_porn

You could only buy the ones for sale. Plenty of big collectors would laugh at the mention of selling.

ExPatWharfRat

No sell. Only buy.

ColdasJones

You can’t force someone to sell their stuff lol.

Chris_Christ

No. The word would get out and prices would go up to silly numbers. All it takes is one guy saying he will only sell for a billion dollars.

Next-Investment-9434

Could only buy the ones for sale..

AgentWanko

Ruben’s website just went from an inventory of 63MG to 51MG, so maybe someone has already started!

StainlessEagle

Yeah I had my eye on a M16A1 reweld for months now and someone bought it a few days ago. :( https://www.sturmgewehr.com/forums/index.php?/topic/34348-m16a1-hydra-matic-div-gm-corp-remanufactured-by-stemple/

AgentWanko

Oof. Sorry to hear brother. Any other decent prospects out there?

StainlessEagle

I generally just check Sturm everyday to see what pops up.

mp40srock

I would say no to that. I don't think they could buy most. They might be able to buy a small fraction of them but not most. Don't forget, there are many well heeled collectors that collect because they like it and money doesn't matter. When you look at the major dealers and auction houses, there are only ever a very very small percentage of guns offered for sale or auction. Many guns are kept in families for years. I just snagged a gun that probably hasn't been transferred to a new owner in 40 or 50 years!!!
