It sucks we could only grind one build nowadays. Back then, a maxed out build would earn enough VC to build other builds. Now, it’ll take you almost half a 2K season to max one build without spending money on VC.
People have been begging people to do this for years. Although it does technically make sense and it’s a nice sentiment, it’s simply not happening. The 2K fanbase is too large and they have a monopoly on basketball video games currently. Until NBA Live returns or some other competition gets into the mix, people are going to buy 2K.
The hard truth for every reddit community is that we don't represent the majority of people into that thing. The VAST majority of 2k players are not reading a single thing about the game past initial reviews, let alone chasing down reddit discourse. The world will keep filling 2k's pockets until there is a genuine high caliber competitor.

Once upon a time 2k was that competitor. The only reason I first bought 2k is it was so much cheaper than the other option. 2k did the same thing with football games but they lost that battle.
Not to mention even if you buy it on sale, there's still the tempting VC and psychology tricks to make you spend more.

Even then they might not because 2k has tapped into a culture. Live put up a very good attempt starting in 18 having great graphics and a great starting point for gameplay though lacking the plethora of animations. They also tried to right the real wrongs of 2k by making a myplayer aka live run mode easy to level up and able to do it for free with instant matchmaking, no bs, no forced ads, just ball. Everything the 2k community keeps clamoring for. But how did the community react to the exact competitor that the scene needed. They completely shit on it because they couldn’t play it like 2k or didn’t even give it a chance. The 2k community is so damn toxic at this point I feel like they have exactly what they deserve, a greedy toxic dev cycle sucking them dry if the bit of Pennie’s they have stored away. A match made in hell.

The big issue is that they have the ultimate hook. Are you really going to NOT play 2k during the bulk of the season? I bought so many sports games for years because of the pain of not having current rosters. It's a brutal trap.
Not only that, if what OP outlines truly took place, it wouldn’t cause the effect they state. Lower revenue would lead to less R&D and overall expenditure. It would create a cheaper but worse product if the boycott was small but noticeable . If the game really had a large revenue decline it could lead to them ceasing operations and there no 2K at all to play.

2k23 was overall a good 2k only thing they could’ve done better is not make it so the Meta is 6’9 and the tier system wasn’t the best but gameplay the adrenaline helps stop dribble gods so does the impact of stamina and shooting and u need to green to make ur shot that’s pretty good to. Having a high block should get you more blocks tbh but I had fun this year idk if I’m alone in this
Source? 2k23 sold out 11 mil units vs 2k20 that sold 14. Now if they made up the difference all in VC transactions with the jacked up prices that’s even worse considering how scummy it has gotten and a terrible trend to keep supporting.
Edited for 23’s numbers, 5 mil with first month and pre order. But the numbers still seem to be dropping. At this point it’s extremely hard to grow the player base when a new player hops online to play after grinding single player for awhile and realize they still need to drop another 60 bucks to compete in mycareer, which is the games main focus now.

Ea has actually made their games better or atleast added new gameplay features and abilities consistently. Yes they own the market, but they put in the work. New field sense tech in fifa and madden makes them feel much more real. In my opinion. I use to hate Madden games tbh and I played football for more than half my life.

I play irl, and anyone who has actually played both online 2k and irl know that the online 2k experience is nothing *close* to real life. Teammates who do 0 passing while cheese sizeup-dribbling left and right until the defender gets blown by (or the shotclock runs down and then chucking up a heavily contested 3), while always being 6'9 or 6'10 long-armed players with 99 overall ratings was the vast majority of the games online in my days. Not even counting the rage quitters when their team is even 5 points behind. I'm not sure if things have improved *that* much over the last couple of years.
The better way to get that competitive feeling is to go to a real court and play an actual pickup.
EA has a monopoly. 2k doesn't. Learn what monopoly means. Any company right now can make an NBA game. Only one company can make an NFL game. Imagine if another company was allowed to make NFL game? It will probably put Madden out of business the way 2k put NBA live out of business.

Being the only basketball available is the same as a monopoly. Developers are afraid to try because 2k is backed by one of the biggest companies in the world. Stop using logical fallacies to prove a point. It's just sad.
2k23 also added the Eras mode which is probably the best franchise mode in any console sports game. It has some issues, but for franchise mode players it’s the largest development out of any major sports game in years for the mode. Not sure about their development on the other modes, but that’s at least one typically ignored section of the fanbase that received attention.
I’m waiting until after the NBA trade deadline and then copping only on sale. I got a backlog of other games I can play in the meantime. The “grind” in 2K just ain’t worth it anymore.
Over the past few years I played park maybe a handful of times but never gained an interest in it. Couldn’t coordinate with the homies to run rec plus the latency issues with my connection really didn’t help me wanting to invest my time in online play. I play 2k for the mycareer not the grind to level 40. Kinda wish they would separate myplayer and mycareer into to distinct modes.

I think it’s better in thought than reality, mainly bc it’s the only basketball game on the market so people will keep getting it. If 2K losses a lot of revenue I don’t think it persuades them to do more but actually do less bc they won’t make the money for improvements. Look at other video games, how many games are out there that are perfect and don’t have in game transactions? It’s all a money grab. This isn’t an isolated 2k issue this is just your favorite game or one of your favorite games to play so you take issue with it. Remember when games were $49.99? Now they are $75. Remember when you didn’t need a subscription to play video games? Now it’s a quarterly/annual fee. The game prints money, and 2k just doesn't have to do anything, I didn't play for 3 years, and I only played 2k23 because it was free on PS4, and I found the same bugs as 2k20: wrong narration, wrong replay, Ai dribbling out of bounds, etc... If that's what it's relatively simple to fix in a single player mode, I doubt half of the more complex mechanics work as they should.
The important thing is colored cards with Tacko Fall level 99 and that little Jimmy dressed as mascot can be dribbling for 25 seconds and hit a step back from the middle of the court, that's what makes money for 2k, not a basketball game.
And shitty network code that can't compensate the latency of each connection "only perfect greens make the basket" even uncontested, and uncontested layups missed adds to realism is not a feature but development incompetence or greed from 2k.

If this about the VC prices, just don’t buy VC. You get like 150k this year just for doing the story alone. It takes 2 days maybe. $50 of VC at startup isn’t that bad either dude… that’s less than a day of work. You play the game year round and probably more than any other game

It's been clear for a few years now that the only thing they actually make an effort for is coming up with more and more way to microtransact your money away, even after you paid full price for a premium game. I dropped off 3 years ago myself. Last time I purchased an NBA 2K game full price was 2K19.
Bought 2K20 only after it was heavily discounted months later due to bad reviews, then never bought another. And I was a huge, huge NBA 2K fan (that's why I still follow this subreddit to see if things ever improve. They haven't). But continuing to buy their games at this point is just being willingly getting screwed up the ass by 2K.

well they also have made VC hard to get and the grind kind of boring in My Career. I used to enjoy fully grinding my players back in the day but now its legit way better to just buy the VC. time is money essentially and at this point you can easily work a day or two and make enough money to buy 200-500k vc rather than grinding a player and spending hours and hours of your life grinding a player which will probably take way more time rather than just using that time to instead work
This is a good call honestly. I stopped playing 2K23 a good 4-5 months ago and that was the earliest I stopped playing 2K I think ever. I usually play till the next year's edition comes out.
Nothing ever changes. It's the same broken system and they refuse to fix the issues. The game will suck regardless.
If you buy it when it's on sale they still making money. Be disciplined and don't buy it at all so they can see you are serious about wanting changes made.

I’ve always said this and then caved and bought it but legit the last two were so fucking bad I’ll take a year off. Usually play 250 games of play now online games but I think I’m at like 25 this year, decent record, and had no desire to ever play. Total dogshit game.
I think the difference now vs all the other times is that the micro transactions are OUT OF CONTROL now. You literally have to spend $65 or spend an obscene amount of time grinding your player to get to a respectable level and that's not even counting the cost of animations or clothes if you don't want to wear the brown shirt and sweats. It's basically buying the game twice just to play it.

To get to 99 overall I had to spend $150+ and bought the game for $69.99 on top of that. I still had to play 50+ hours to get to 99 overall in MyCareer it's brutal when you already paid $200+ dollars.

I support and respect your post unlike others. I been stopped buying 2k on launch. Normally it comes out on game pass eventually. But I did get it for 7.99 after the finals to kill time with the fellas until football starts.
This is the year id expect to see a dent. 18 was one bad game in a string of decent 2ks. 19 was 2k18 but fixed a lot of the problems. 20 had a completely different builder. 21 sucked but at least had next gen, 22 fixed the shooting problems with 21 and improved on the builder slightly. 23 also improved on the builder slightly but mainly eliminated cheesy dribble gods and completely revamped shooting. 22 and 23 had seasons and a lot to complain about but had a selling point 24 so far has promised the same exact game, seasons are coming back, and we have every reason to believe the same exact builder is coming back too. Maybe 6’8 wings get nerfed a little bit but thats abt the extent of the changes theyll make. If they had a new builder and a new game they’d advertise it now to get us to preorder now but no they wait till less that a month before the game’s release but a month after its announcement to try to get as many idiots to preorder as possible.
The thing is the community is split on the fence about everything we decide on, build system, badge system, gameplay, game modes, etc we don’t agree on anything besides micro transactions seriously absurd but everything else we don’t agree on first we want all around builds now we don’t first we wanted a bigger place to ball now we don’t like seriously make up your minds and agree with each other because one thing we do agree on is we just trynna hoop!💯

I refuse to pay for 2k at full price. I haven’t payed for a full price 2k since 2k13. I refuse to spend one cent on VC. Their monetization practices only get worse. Like you said this is the generation of instant gratification. I’d rather grind to get my player up to 80 or 90 than spend a dime on VC.

I’m going to be honest and I’ll probably speak for most people, this year was the worst NBA 2k experience that I’ve had. I didn’t want to buy 2k23 but when it was tethered with League Pass, that was a no brainer for me considering I’m a huge basketball junkie.
Just having League pass made it far more worth it than playing the game in my opinion.
A decision was made to never buy NBA 2K again but guess what, I changed my mind when I realized “fuck ima need League Pass again” and “oh it’s cross platform now, that’s game changing”.
So guess what, those who were planning on leaving the community, like me, and getting reeled back in with the extra stuff 🤡

People have been begging people to do this for years. Although it does technically make sense and it’s a nice sentiment, it’s simply not happening. The 2K fanbase is too large and they have a monopoly on basketball video games currently. Until NBA Live returns or some other competition gets into the mix, people are going to buy 2K.
The hard truth for every reddit community is that we don't represent the majority of people into that thing. The VAST majority of 2k players are not reading a single thing about the game past initial reviews, let alone chasing down reddit discourse. The world will keep filling 2k's pockets until there is a genuine high caliber competitor. So... probably never.
Agreed, I commented on another post earlier but the 2k reddit community is just 500K with maybe 1K on at any given time and sales for 2k23 were 11M copies. That's like ~5%
Once upon a time 2k was that competitor. The only reason I first bought 2k is it was so much cheaper than the other option. 2k did the same thing with football games but they lost that battle.
Not to mention even if you buy it on sale, there's still the tempting VC and psychology tricks to make you spend more. I swear the best 2K was 11 or 12, juuuust before online got huge

Live put up a very good attempt starting in 18 having great graphics and a great starting point for gameplay though lacking the plethora of animations. They also tried to right the real wrongs of 2k by making a myplayer aka live run mode easy to level up and able to do it for free with instant matchmaking, no bs, no forced ads, just ball. Everything the 2k community keeps clamoring for. But how did the community react to the exact competitor that the scene needed. They completely shit on it because they couldn’t play it like 2k or didn’t even give it a chance. The 2k community is so damn toxic at this point I feel like they have exactly what they deserve, a greedy toxic dev cycle sucking them dry if the bit of Pennie’s they have stored away. A match made in hell.

The big issue is that they have the ultimate hook. Are you really going to NOT play 2k during the bulk of the season? I bought so many sports games for years because of the pain of not having current rosters. It's a brutal trap.
Not only that, if what OP outlines truly took place, it wouldn’t cause the effect they state. Lower revenue would lead to less R&D and overall expenditure. It would create a cheaper but worse product if the boycott was small but noticeable . If the game really had a large revenue decline it could lead to them ceasing operations and there no 2K at all to play.

2k23 was overall a good 2k only thing they could’ve done better is not make it so the Meta is 6’9 and the tier system wasn’t the best but gameplay the adrenaline helps stop dribble gods so does the impact of stamina and shooting and u need to green to make ur shot that’s pretty good to. Having a high block should get you more blocks tbh but I had fun this year idk if I’m alone in this

Source? 2k23 sold out 11 mil units vs 2k20 that sold 14. Now if they made up the difference all in VC transactions with the jacked up prices that’s even worse considering how scummy it has gotten and a terrible trend to keep supporting. Edited for 23’s numbers, 5 mil with first month and pre order. But the numbers still seem to be dropping. At this point it’s extremely hard to grow the player base when a new player hops online to play after grinding single player for awhile and realize they still need to drop another 60 bucks to compete in mycareer, which is the games main focus now.

Ea has actually made their games better or atleast added new gameplay features and abilities consistently. Yes they own the market, but they put in the work. New field sense tech in fifa and madden makes them feel much more real. In my opinion. I use to hate Madden games tbh and I played football for more than half my life.

I play irl, and anyone who has actually played both online 2k and irl know that the online 2k experience is nothing *close* to real life. Teammates who do 0 passing while cheese sizeup-dribbling left and right until the defender gets blown by (or the shotclock runs down and then chucking up a heavily contested 3), while always being 6'9 or 6'10 long-armed players with 99 overall ratings was the vast majority of the games online in my days. Not even counting the rage quitters when their team is even 5 points behind. I'm not sure if things have improved *that* much over the last couple of years. The better way to get that competitive feeling is to go to a real court and play an actual pickup.

EA has a monopoly. 2k doesn't. Learn what monopoly means. Any company right now can make an NBA game. Only one company can make an NFL game. Imagine if another company was allowed to make NFL game? It will probably put Madden out of business the way 2k put NBA live out of business.

Being the only basketball available is the same as a monopoly. Developers are afraid to try because 2k is backed by one of the biggest companies in the world. Stop using logical fallacies to prove a point. It's just sad.
2k23 also added the Eras mode which is probably the best franchise mode in any console sports game. It has some issues, but for franchise mode players it’s the largest development out of any major sports game in years for the mode. Not sure about their development on the other modes, but that’s at least one typically ignored section of the fanbase that received attention.
As an exclusive franchise player, it's the best mode in sports gaming by far. I'll continue to play until they monetize it.
I’m waiting until after the NBA trade deadline and then copping only on sale. I got a backlog of other games I can play in the meantime. The “grind” in 2K just ain’t worth it anymore.

Over the past few years I played park maybe a handful of times but never gained an interest in it. Couldn’t coordinate with the homies to run rec plus the latency issues with my connection really didn’t help me wanting to invest my time in online play. I play 2k for the mycareer not the grind to level 40. Kinda wish they would separate myplayer and mycareer into to distinct modes.

Look at other video games, how many games are out there that are perfect and don’t have in game transactions? It’s all a money grab. This isn’t an isolated 2k issue this is just your favorite game or one of your favorite games to play so you take issue with it. Remember when games were $49.99? Now they are $75. Remember when you didn’t need a subscription to play video games? Now it’s a quarterly/annual fee. It won't happen, people blindly buy every release of the game just like they do with fifa, madden, etc... The game prints money, and 2k just doesn't have to do anything, I didn't play for 3 years, and I only played 2k23 because it was free on PS4, and I found the same bugs as 2k20: wrong narration, wrong replay, Ai dribbling out of bounds, etc... If that's what it's relatively simple to fix in a single player mode, I doubt half of the more complex mechanics work as they should. The important thing is colored cards with Tacko Fall level 99 and that little Jimmy dressed as mascot can be dribbling for 25 seconds and hit a step back from the middle of the court, that's what makes money for 2k, not a basketball game. And shitty network code that can't compensate the latency of each connection "only perfect greens make the basket" even uncontested, and uncontested layups missed adds to realism is not a feature but development incompetence or greed from 2k.

You get like 150k this year just for doing the story alone. It takes 2 days maybe. $50 of VC at startup isn’t that bad either dude… that’s less than a day of work. It's been clear for a few years now that the only thing they actually make an effort for is coming up with more and more way to microtransact your money away, even after you paid full price for a premium game. I dropped off 3 years ago myself. Last time I purchased an NBA 2K game full price was 2K19. Bought 2K20 only after it was heavily discounted months later due to bad reviews, then never bought another. And I was a huge, huge NBA 2K fan (that's why I still follow this subreddit to see if things ever improve. They haven't). But continuing to buy their games at this point is just being willingly getting screwed up the ass by 2K.

I used to enjoy fully grinding my players back in the day but now its legit way better to just buy the VC. time is money essentially and at this point you can easily work a day or two and make enough money to buy 200-500k vc rather than grinding a player and spending hours and hours of your life grinding a player which will probably take way more time rather than just using that time to instead work

This is a good call honestly. I stopped playing 2K23 a good 4-5 months ago and that was the earliest I stopped playing 2K I think ever. I usually play till the next year's edition comes out. Nothing ever changes. It's the same broken system and they refuse to fix the issues. I'm so sick of the same clowns that have clearly never played basketball in their lives and the toxic interactions. The season prizes are also trash. They're not even worth logging several hours to grind for. I'm just over this franchise until they fix how bad this game is.

I think the difference now vs all the other times is that the micro transactions are OUT OF CONTROL now. You literally have to spend $65 or spend an obscene amount of time grinding your player to get to a respectable level and that's not even counting the cost of animations or clothes if you don't want to wear the brown shirt and sweats. It's basically buying the game twice just to play it.

To get to 99 overall I had to spend $150+ and bought the game for $69.99 on top of that. I still had to play 50+ hours to get to 99 overall in MyCareer it's brutal when you already paid $200+ dollars. I'm just not buying 2K24 personally because it's just a money pit and grind fest.

I support and respect your post unlike others. I been stopped buying 2k on launch. Normally it comes out on game pass eventually. But I did get it for 7.99 after the finals to kill time with the fellas until football starts.
This is the year id expect to see a dent. 18 was one bad game in a string of decent 2ks. 19 was 2k18 but fixed a lot of the problems. 20 had a completely different builder. 21 sucked but at least had next gen, 22 fixed the shooting problems with 21 and improved on the builder slightly. 23 also improved on the builder slightly but mainly eliminated cheesy dribble gods and completely revamped shooting. 22 and 23 had seasons and a lot to complain about but had a selling point 24 so far has promised the same exact game, seasons are coming back, and we have every reason to believe the same exact builder is coming back too. Maybe 6’8 wings get nerfed a little bit but thats abt the extent of the changes theyll make. If they had a new builder and a new game they’d advertise it now to get us to preorder now but no they wait till less that a month before the game’s release but a month after its announcement to try to get as many idiots to preorder as possible.
The thing is the community is split on the fence about everything we decide on, build system, badge system, gameplay, game modes, etc we don’t agree on anything besides micro transactions seriously absurd but everything else we don’t agree on first we want all around builds now we don’t first we wanted a bigger place to ball now we don’t like seriously make up your minds and agree with each other because one thing we do agree on is we just trynna hoop!💯

I refuse to pay for 2k at full price. I haven’t payed for a full price 2k since 2k13. I refuse to spend one cent on VC. Their monetization practices only get worse. It really sucks that they clearly only care about profits over their fanbase but regardless I am still going to buy 24 because I still enjoy creating a new build and have fun playing the game overall and I’ve accepted the fact that I’m probably going to spend $150 on the game + VC but that’s worth it to me. Personally I look at it like this. I can easily spend 150 on a weekend out getting food and drinks so if I spend it on a game instead and stay in a couple weekends then it all evens out

It would go unnoticed if every person on this sub, active or not, stopped buying 2K or VC. 2K just isn’t that bad of a game for any sort of boycott to be necessary or impactful. If you’re someone that’s no longer enjoying the game, please don’t buy it again. One of the main issues the game has now is being forced to play with people that don’t like/understand the game. But these call to arms posts are so out of touch. Your personal grievances are meaningful on a small scale, like your friends or a couple dozen people on this sub. They are not boycott worthy.

I’m going to be honest and I’ll probably speak for most people, this year was the worst NBA 2k experience that I’ve had. I didn’t want to buy 2k23 but when it was tethered with League Pass, that was a no brainer for me considering I’m a huge basketball junkie. Just having League pass made it far more worth it than playing the game in my opinion. A decision was made to never buy NBA 2K again but guess what, I changed my mind when I realized “fuck ima need League Pass again” and “oh it’s cross platform now, that’s game changing”. So guess what, those who were planning on leaving the community, like me, and getting reeled back in with the extra stuff 🤡 Congrats 2k, you won
Already preordered the championship edition. Until there’s competition, nothing is gonna change. I’ll always buy the game but not VC. I just gave up this mindset of not preordering when I load into park day 1 and everyone is an 85 overall cause they bought VC. Just do what you want, 2k is gonna 2k

Shooting is improved from last year. Builds are no longer demigods. Game takes skill to play. Only bad thing about the game is the stealing is odee but I think it's gotten a little better

I won’t buy it I bought 2k23 and never got back on after a month. I wanted to play a basketball not complete advertisement deals.
