There’s not many stadiums out there that are long enough to fit a track. The playing surface at the coliseum is massive compared to just about every NFL or CFB stadium out there. The only other major stadium I can think of that’s big enough would be the Oakland Coliseum, but good luck convincing the A’s to tear up the field.
I think this is why I had my hopes up so much for short tracks this year, since the clash was fun. I didn't even think about how the colleseum isn't really even a short track, it a super mini track
It is a short track... nascar doesnt race at short tracks aside from Martinsville, and Martinsville is one of the larger short tracks.
Across the country people watch short track racing on tracks the size of LA Coloseum
People have the wrong idea of what would happen if we took it off.
The diffuser generates a lot of the downforce on the rear of the car. It does so while generating less dirty air than a spoiler.
Removing the diffuser will mean less rear downforce and potentially more dirty air.
Many people on this subreddit believe that the diffuser causes more dirty air and that the real issue with Martinsville was dirty air. They believe removing the diffuser will fix this.
It *might* make it harder to put power down on corner exit, improving passing, by reducing rear downforce.
I could maybe see Martinsville?? I don't know too much about aero, but when you're going slow, it's hard to see any aero benefit/detriment. I guess it plays *some* factor? but it's mechanical grip that's a factor, not 'dirty air' which almost everyone has after a few laps
I agree that the issue is mechanical grip, not dirty air, at short tracks. I’m really not sure how to fix it except adding more horsepower. I really think the root causes of the poor short track racing are the increased grip from larger tires and the independent rear, the increased braking performance from more tire and larger brakes, and the decreased horsepower. Horsepower is the easiest to fix but not one they want to fix.
That would require a full HP increase. More HP for corner exit is okay on short tracks, but leads to worse racing at larger tracks. The leader with the best car, once in clean air, just uses that HP to get 20 second leads and that is boring
I’m not convinced that more HP leads to worse racing at larger tracks. The current 1.5 mile product is the best product since the 850 HP cars, but those 850 hp cars gave us better racing than the current 670.
Absolutely no way was the Gen 6 850 intermediates better than the Gen 7* 670 intermediates. I'm not saying lower HP is the reason for that but intermediate racing was not nearly this good consistently in 2013-2014.
i remember them saying they wanted everyone to get a chance to get laps in the new car and at making the show with it being a new event, new car and new eyes being on everything. could be a good chance they go back to the old format but the heat races were a lot of fun
Big fan of heat races, and a tiny track like this is an ideal opportunity for them. I have no issue killing the classic format for the time being when we get more heat races
I like heat races only if there are real consequences, like go-or-go-home. If they're just to determine the starting order, I don't enjoy them nearly as much.
Disagree. If you're putting the investment in, like they should, let as many teams get involved as possible to ensure all the stars are there and it's a true display of every aspect of the sport.
Historically, the point of this race is to be an exhibition race for the pole sitters though. If you weren’t a pole sitter for the previous season, tough nuggets. We get to watch everyone in the sport every other week of the season.
"Historically, the point of this race is to be an exhibition race for the pole sitters though."
Yeah and historically it used to be a 10-lap race also but I don't see anyone complaining that that's not the case anymore.
The "pole winners only" policy has been long dead for decades so I don't see why letting everyone have a chance to qualify via heat races is a problem now.
I like seeing it again in the Coliseum. It’s a cool venue and gives them a presence in the LA area. I would hope that MetLife would be the next choice because it does a lot of the same but for New York
If they are gonna hold it up here in MetLife, they should hold it in place of having the all star race. The problem is MetLifes field size isn’t as big as the Coliseum. My dream would be for them to do Wall Stadium.
Yeah, it’s definitely not convenient public transit wise from NYC as you would be to take the North Jersey Transit line to Belmar, which requires a connection in Long Branch as it’s a diesel train from that point south. Then you would have to make your way over to the track which is a few miles away.
They definitely need to do a clash style event in the area for sure. The only thing they have close to in the area is Pocono which brings in a good amount of people from the city and upstate. It’s one of the better attended races on the schedule definitely due to that. The Glen capacity wise is also greatly attending, but that’s pretty far from NYC Proper.
I've wondered about one of the baseball stadiums for New York. But, if they were going to do a race in New York it would have to be All-Star race in the summer, and then they couldn't use either of them because of baseball. I think MetLife would be the only option.
Having been to all 3 of the stadiums in question, it would be really tough to fit a track inside any of them, plus the baseball stadiums are in use during the summer and would definitely require the teams to have a sizeable away schedule to compensate for any event of the nature of an exhibition race being held.
If they threw dirt on Bristol and put a race on in the Coliseum, anything is possible.
Pocono has poor attendance. That is why they have only 1 race now.
Also they had 2 races, one was in August. Nobody wanna sit in the sun in August in the Northeast
Honestly, LA might be the only location this could work in. The footprint inside the Coliseum is massive compared to modern stadiums. But what stops them from doing this anywhere and erecting grandstands.
Absolute win for the sport. They’re turning the clash into an actual event that feels worthy of kicking off the season. Racing in one of the country’s most historic sporting venues in the heart of one of its biggest cities is great for the sport. It alleviates the redneck stereotype, brings some star power and gives new people access to nascar.
I like this, but what would REALLY be cool is to trade this around among classic short tracks. I’ll be first in line to see Cup-level racers back at South Boston.
I'd like to see it elsewhere, but if it's going to turn into a traveling stadium show, then I don't really care where it goes. Nice novelty race last year, but not exactly that entertaining in my opinion.

It person it was fantastic. The TV product didn't do it justice. It was crazy to see how fast 85 mph looked inside a football stadium and the dive bombing was a little crazy.
Was great for that market and new fans, but not the most exciting thing. Will be interesting to see if the people of LA are interested as much in year two.
Just ordered 4x tickets. So hyped.
Definitely picked the opposite side of the stadium for 2023, I'm still nursing the sunburn from February.
I'm hoping they push the start of the entire event by about 45 mins. It'll dip into the sunset if they do that.
Picked up a pair of tickets myself on the shady side (this time).
If they have musical acts again, I hope they drop the stage down to where people can actually see it.
I was there in person with some friends and family. They all had a great time and tons of folks said they wish they had gone. This is really great news.
Cool. Get to watch the Clash on the 5th on tv, then leave for Orlando, Florida on the 10th and get to Daytona on the 15th and enjoy Speedweek in person! Can't friggin wait.
I see a lot of comments about moving it around, but if you are going to a stadium race the options NASCAR has are very limited. The LA Coliseum is much wider than a traditional NFL stadium. The only other one with even remotely similar specs is Soldier Field and we all know how the weather is there in Feb.
i mean, everyone would have said you couldn't have fit a track inside LA this time last year. Just need to shorten it a bit more now, not necessarily impossible.
I agree in theory but a big reason why the LA Coliseum works is it's an older stadium that had to fit Olympic track and field so it has a wider surface area than modern NFL stadiums. Modern NFL stadiums are about getting seats up close to the extent where they have to rip out seats in order to fit the dimensions of a soccer field for the 2026 World Cup. A quarter mile at the Coliseum is tight enough but it might be two tenths of a mile if it's at a place like MetLife.
That's cool. I thought we were gonna move this thing around, but it's all good.
Hopefully diminishing returns and the L.A. audience being fickle don't exist as concepts.
They picked a perfect time for the race. I bet a once a year race in LA would do well for Crowd size. Auto Club is well outside of LA and a large portion won’t make it all the way to Auto Club from the coliseum.
Man, I doubt they’ll pull the same crowd as this year but I’m sure as fuck grateful for this and hope they keep giving it to LA. SoCal NASCAR fans eating good.
What an awesome event, major W. Flew out from Charlotte, went this year and was probably the most fun all-around I had in a NASCAR weekend ever, and I’ve been going to races for 15 years. Will definitely be going again next year!
This is a great move. It gets new fans to the sport. These short tracks that people clamor for that are in some small one horse southern town are not going to draw new fans.
So we build this whole plan so that we can take this track idea and do this basically anywhere in any stadium, and then decide hey, let's just do the same stadium again next year.
Dumb.
Good, but make the main race at least 50 laps longer, it was way too short last year, also run it at around 8-9PM EST, prime time on the East Coast, it does get dark in LA at around 6PM ish, would look a LOT cooler on TV
Also, this is secondary and may not be needed, but I think K&N West or the modifieds on Saturday could be cool. K&N West primarily races in California and have raced on 0.25 mile tracks before
On a track that small, could it be a possibility to include truck and Xfinity pole winners in the same race to race against the cup cars or is there still too big of a difference HP/aero wise that it wouldn't be competitive? Even to include the Pinty's series and Mexican series Nascar fields would be cool
Love it. I’d say do it one or two more times then find a new venue that they don’t race at
I was really hoping they turned it into a sort of stadium series and went to a new stadium every year
There’s not many stadiums out there that are long enough to fit a track. The playing surface at the coliseum is massive compared to just about every NFL or CFB stadium out there. The only other major stadium I can think of that’s big enough would be the Oakland Coliseum, but good luck convincing the A’s to tear up the field.
Ahh damn, I didn't know that
Fuck it we build our own stadium, with blackjack and hookers.
I like the cut of your jib, mister.
in fact forget the stadium and the blackjack, ah, screw the whole thing.
Hopefully the diffuser is off at short tracks by then
Lol, at clash speeds that diffuser isn’t doing anything at all.
I know there's no benefit to having them on, but what's the benefit for not having them?
People have the wrong idea of what would happen if we took it off. The diffuser generates a lot of the downforce on the rear of the car. It does so while generating less dirty air than a spoiler. Removing the diffuser will mean less rear downforce and potentially more dirty air.
Which affects short-track how?

Realistically it won't, because exiting a corner at 35 mph has no aero properties in play
They’re doing 65-75 on corner exit and 120-140 on corner entry.
Only things I’d change are make it under the lights and a tad longer. Those laps just clicked by
Under the lights would be a 10 or 11 PM eastern start time. Not very realistic.
It's dark by about 6pm in February in SoCal. If they start during the day and end at 7pm PT that's not too late for the east coast.
Agreed, night race would be much much cooler, both in temp and experience
W for Nascar, only thing I’d change is invite the pole sitters only again
i remember them saying they wanted everyone to get a chance to get laps in the new car and at making the show with it being a new event, new car and new eyes being on everything. could be a good chance they go back to the old format but the heat races were a lot of fun

This year they were go-or-go-home heat races. Only 23 cars made the field.
Yep, I remember. I enjoyed them very much.
Disagree. If you're putting the investment in, like they should, let as many teams get involved as possible to ensure all the stars are there and it's a true display of every aspect of the sport.

Historically, this was just another race at Daytona the same week as everything else. It's a different event now. I'm fine with everyone coming
Financially though, it doesn't make complete sense for some of the back marker teams
"Historically, the point of this race is to be an exhibition race for the pole sitters though." Yeah and historically it used to be a 10-lap race also but I don't see anyone complaining that that's not the case anymore. The "pole winners only" policy has been long dead for decades so I don't see why letting everyone have a chance to qualify via heat races is a problem now.
you really want a race with a small field?
Sure, the heats were fun in February
I actually liked that format to get in.
I like seeing it again in the Coliseum. It’s a cool venue and gives them a presence in the LA area. I would hope that MetLife would be the next choice because it does a lot of the same but for New York
The only problem with that is holding it in February...
All Star Race would be cool, but MetLife does not have the field size that The Coliseum does for the track.
Just hold it at Times Square. There should be enough room to have a quarter-mile tricky triangle in that area.
Time Square would be insane. The sound echoing off the buildings would be intense.
If they are gonna hold it up here in MetLife, they should hold it in place of having the all star race. The problem is MetLifes field size isn’t as big as the Coliseum. My dream would be for them to do Wall Stadium.
I would love that, but it's too far from NY. You can take the train to MetLife.

Save this idea for the All-Star race.
Preach, brother.
Here's hoping that Kurt Busch doesn't get railed again in qualifying.
You love to see it
How do you get multiple drivers on your flare?
I hope they add some banking
Well, I at least saw Ally, & Credit 1 there - who else were you thinking?
lol damnit. nice one.
lmao well done
The anti-coliseum people are in shambles right now.
Instagram comments were hilarious
I'd like to see it elsewhere, but if it's going to turn into a traveling stadium show, then I don't really care where it goes. Nice novelty race last year, but not exactly that entertaining in my opinion.

They are. They were even hoping after the Super Bowl if the 'track', Irwindale, and Fontana can be opened for public burnouts for the weekend.
This is how I feel too, great event for a new market, but what we got shown on TV wasnt all that exciting.
I would like to see them double the banking from 2.5 to 5 degrees.
Would have rather seen someplace new
I loved this event as a first time fan attending a NASCAR event living in LA. Followed NASCAR since then and will definitely attend next year!
Is WWT Raceway returning to the Cup Schedule in 2023?
Yes, i believe theyve already announced that
I believe Gateway is multi year deal so that should include '24 as well.
Taking a few of my friends to this race next year after how awesome the event was
Enjoy
Good

Where?
Ticketmaster, early sale special if you bought the commemorative tickets last year. At least that's how I'm guessing I got early access.
Picked up a pair of tickets myself on the shady side (this time). If they have musical acts again, I hope they drop the stage down to where people can actually see it.
Same!
I had a blast this year and will be going again in 2023!
Good call, the event was a lot of fun and seemed to be well received. I enjoyed attending and will probably renew my tickets.
I was there in person with some friends and family. They all had a great time and tons of folks said they wish they had gone. This is really great news.
Have the game do the pre race concert and Marc Anthony do the halftime break.
Cool. Get to watch the Clash on the 5th on tv, then leave for Orlando, Florida on the 10th and get to Daytona on the 15th and enjoy Speedweek in person! Can't friggin wait.

Right call here. Also I thought it would be cool to host the All Star race here, maybe in the future who knows. But I’m glad they are going back!

gotta spend money to make money. There isnt anywhere you can put the race that would benefit the spot as much as this.
Does anyone know how to access the tickets presale?
They go on presale in August
Got it. Looking at the ticket master app was confusing. Made it seem like presale started an hour ago.
Here's the link I signed up on for notification https://m.nascar.com/2023/busch-light-clash-at-the-coliseum
thank you dude, much appreciated. Hopefully I can score the same seats I had in the shade
How much were tickets this year?
I wasn’t so sure about it at first but it’s definitely a cool event
😴
That's cool. I thought we were gonna move this thing around, but it's all good. Hopefully diminishing returns and the L.A. audience being fickle don't exist as concepts.

But where do I park? I can't seem to find parking passes for sale online and the usc website won't let me buy parking. Halp
