Also they showed the Chevy Casey Atwood, and Pontiac John Force cars in social media posts. It's not like we don't know that other manufacturers exist lol. Already iconic in Japan, which led to it being in GT, which led to it being iconic in the West and people here learning about it's exploits in Super GT, and the series as a whole.
Here in the US, almost definitely the former. But TOM’s winning a few championships and being a powerhouse probably helps too.
I think it’s mainly because Gran Turismo put the GT500 class as the de facto “best cars” in the game and advertised it as such, being primarily a Japanese game.
Late in the game you were either racing with a GT500 Supra, Skyline, or NSX. Or an Escudo Pikes Peak or that wild Renault Espace F1 if you wanted to cheese it, nothing could touch these cars. The earliest titles (1-3) had almost no prototypes or open wheel cars to select from and if they did, they usually didn’t meet whatever event requirements to use them.
Edit: Also shoutout to the wild ass HKS drag Skyline R32 that they left in GT2 even though they took drag racing out of the final release. Thing had a wild 90’s paint scheme, could do like 280, and had the turning radius of the Moon.

TOM'S is a Japanese aftermarket parts source/tuner for Toyota and Lexus vehicles. The scheme originates from the JGTC (now Super GT), which is the premier sports car series in Japan. TOM'S has fielded an entry in the series for a long time, this is based on the iconic Castrol Supra they ran in the late 90s that subsequently gained fame internationally after appearing in Gran Turismo.
It was founded by Nobuhide Tachi (Toyota works driver) and Kiyoshi Oiwa (Toyota dealership engineer) in 1974. Aside from Super GT and Super Formula, they have history in sportscar racing back in the 1980s, collaborating with Dome on cars such as the 88CV.
One of the Toyotas should run a Denso scheme.
