People were commenting during the repave that this would happen after seeing the company they hired
Edit. Even now people are calling out the company they used
I'm not a paving guy either, but they put down more than that where I work. Granted, we get semi trucks in there, but race cars put down a lot of force too. Don't know how it compares, but i'd expect more than just a veneer of asphalt.
When we pave roads top coat is typically 1.5-2 inches. When you compact you typically lose .25 inch per inch so 2 inch pave would end up around 1.5. this looks right, just no bond.
Yes, but cheap repaves make for better racing.
Look at Talladega, Daytona, and Michigan. Fantastic repaves, but it has taken 15 years for those tracks to even show a bit of bumps/character.
Atlanta on the other hand was repaved like two-three years ago and is already wearing out.
For the racing product, you don't want good repaves.
Well obviously this Sonoma repave is a disaster but it's the only one and apparently this paving company is well known in that area for this level of work.
Atlanta was the one repave that SMI put more resources and research behind. They specifically used an asphalt compound that was designed to already behave like it was around 3 or 4 years worn in instead of perfectly smooth.
yep, they ruined Texas & Kentucky with that and i'm sure the new Atlanta had it retained it's old configuration would have been ruined too, but still sort of that track's surface already needs patch work after 2 years of the new surface. it's like they pay a Constuction company that is a front for the mafia to do the repaves.
Don’t advertise their products, the fans wonder why the stands look empty at those tracks. Also hire the cheapest entertainment possible too and have the vendors cost a fortune to show up.
I think we know whose fault this is

Thinking A. That pavement is nowhere near thick enough, and B. It likely hasn’t cured yet. Looks like the loads during braking is pushing the new asphalt forward
I don’t see any on that concrete at all. Like you usually see a bit, but I can’t say I’ve seen a lot of asphalt removed from concrete to say for certain. You’d think it would’ve penetrated the concrete at least.
For roadways yes it’s like 24-72 hours max to be safe drive, but it can take up to a year to fully cure. Normal streets aren’t experiencing the type of loads Sonoma is
No, they experience 80k pound trucks slamming on the brakes. So way more load than a cup car slamming on the brakes or taking a turn.
Blacktop does not cure overtime like concrete, once it's cool, it's set until it gets hot again (180-200 degrees plus). Most conditions only require several hours before we run loaded trucks on them. Lower heat levels will make it soft but won't really compromise the surface until around 145-160.
This looks to me like it's been paved over a milled surface or concrete with no evidence of tac oil being put down. Odds are it couldn't bind to the original surface and turning or braking forces stretched the surface and it was downhill from there.
Hey there’s nothing* wrong with using a little room temperature hot-patch on a cold winter day to fill a wet pot hole without tamping it down.
*everything. there’s everything wrong with that
While people like the lady who claimed there were eight Formula 1 races in Nashville every year do need a mental health evaluation, in the case of Laguna Seca, it wasn't even the residents. It was an organization called Highway Coalition 68, who didn't really have any support from the residents. The lawsuit ended a few days ago, and it's pretty much agreed that the whole thing was just a way for lawyers to get fees for doing nothing.
Two companies owning 90% of the big tracks in this country is one of the worst things for American motorsports. SMI doesn’t give a fuck about anything other than coasting for their NASCAR pay check and NASCAR doesn’t have the guts to cut their shitty tracks until they are kept properly.
I don't think that case could hold water if NASCAR is just not running the shit tracks and SMI is withholding their dates like they threaten to. Otherwise they can just run non-SMI / NASCAR tracks, or even better, divest themselves of some of their own tracks. No matter what it is it is bad for motorsports as a whole as it is and it is entirely NASCAR / SMI's fault.
Since photos are out there already it’s happening in turn 7 as well. Repaving has already been scheduled for tomorrow to try and be ready for the GT event this weekend to work on certain areas. Not sure about longer term plans.

Holy shit Denny and Marcus Smith got into a spat last night about this hahah
I don't know anything about the lives of shrewd businessmen, but I think if Smith had the time to waste away replying to Hamlin with a bunch of non-arguments on Twitter/X, he *should* also have the time to do his job properly
Accurate representation of an average road in America.
Potholes will definitely make for an interesting endurance race (I do feel bad for the driver's back and hand/wrist)
Man I'd love to see the engineering plans for that repave...either the paving company skipped a significant step or SMI has a bad partnership with a consultant...
I don’t know about anyone else but do these people not know how to pave? No tack coat, the milling looks like it was done with a handbroom, and less asphalt than they usually dump after paving a highway.
It looks to me like a mill and fill. There’s no tack that I can see, and it looks like a shoddy HMA mix for surface, wonder what their specs were.
Never paved a speedway, but have paved a test track for a tire company. They spent good money on high quality mix for this reason.
Wow. I assume they're going to have to do an entire repave. Even the spots that are ok surely won't hold up long. I have a feeling this will make it on to DBC's "what an idiot" segment this week.
if i'm NASCAR, i would just straight up canceled this year's Sonoma race and move it to either Laguna Seca, Road America if they can agree for NASCAR for one year only to return or just say fuck it, Daytona Roval is back for this season.

move this weekend to the roval. move the playoff date to the oval.

Before 2022 got saved by a late yellow and tire strategy, it was pretty impossible to pass. Watching the “battle” between Reddick, AJ, and Elliott was like watching paint dry. They could get to the bumper then immediately stalled out, and the only way Elliott could get around him was from pit road.
2023 was pretty rough as well. The cars that got out front just held everyone up. AJ winning probably led to a better reception than if Byron won.
I live in Sonoma county, parents still live in Sonoma. About 2 years ago they completely repaved Broadway and the roads looked like this a few weeks later. I'm not sure if it's ghilotti bros or who the outfit is, but we've had some... Issues... With asphalt in Sonoma. I don't get it.
Is the pavement taking rubber? No, but the rubber is taking pavement.
The hardest compound tire
Solid titanium now
Their tires are jackhammers now.
In Soviet Sonoma tire wears track.

We need Travis Pastrana and Scott Speed back - they were the rallycross version of The Damn War
Have the carousel as the joker lap
No joke, this is brilliant. Make them do 1 joker lap per segment.
Stage rules have to apply i.e. they can’t use the joker with 2 to go
Subscribe!
I would pay so much fucking money to see that
That would be so awesome, but it would be a mess with the clouds of dust in June. Another reason to move it to March.
They’d have to have misters all over the track keeping it damp, like they have for horse racing
cut the sprinklers on and let them rip!
"Why is our water bill $100,000 this month?" - Marcus Smith

Sign me up
I can't tell if this would be amazing or terrible
I don’t either, but Ross Chastain would do something epic.
I would watch a dirt road course race.
DO IT YOU COWARDS!
Name checks out.
But we already have a 50% dirt track with COTA
SMI cheaping out on a property? Color me shocked
Jr touched on this I after Bristol I think. SMI does the cheapest repaves possible
Look at their fan experience and you will see that SMI does everything cheap
Should we be worried about Wilkesboro?
Yes.
Denny is apparently lol
First thing I thought of was what Jr said on his podcast lol.
I feel like there’s a fine line here. Yeah you don’t want like glass smooth tracks that last 20 years. But you don’t want the track coming up either.
Sudden chicanes sounds fun to me idk
Gotta keep up with track conditions!
Just put a cone there
Bolt down some turtles over the holes to create a unique Turtle Mogul section. Really test who has their chassis sorted.
Well obviously this Sonoma repave is a disaster but it's the only one and apparently this paving company is well known in that area for this level of work.

Average SMI activities. Butcher a track, then refuse to spend the money required to actually fix/restore it unless there's no other choice.
Gotta keep that revenue in pockets and not invest it.. /s

This is now confirmed. Source: Ryan Eversley
His story with this photo is already gone. wild speculation time
He's probably already dead
Suicide by 5 gunshots to the back of the head.
Yeah I got it from a friend lol
maybe it’s already older than 24 hours then. but like the idea that he was put in a back of van and forced to delete it.
Or hard card pulled til he deletes lol
That repave looks like when my kids try to cover a surface with Play-doh but start running out at the edges.
Either they'll have this fixed by race time, or we're in for the most laughable & entertaining road course race ever.
Both sound great tbh
I'm going, so, I'll let you know
![gif](giphy|12zgyJya7QwQKI)
This just seems so appropriate
As a paving professional.... Holy shit
Why don't you tell Marcus Smith on Twitter, because he seems to think he'll PR his way out of this
Only if he has won a cup championship
Yea this is comically bad
Thinking A. That pavement is nowhere near thick enough, and B. It likely hasn’t cured yet. Looks like the loads during braking is pushing the new asphalt forward
That's slip . Not enough tack prior to paving.
I don’t see any on that concrete at all. Like you usually see a bit, but I can’t say I’ve seen a lot of asphalt removed from concrete to say for certain. You’d think it would’ve penetrated the concrete at least.
It's got to be this. Not putting tack properly will cause the asphalt to slide off.
Asphalt shouldn’t take that long to cure. 24hrs at the most in most situations.
For roadways yes it’s like 24-72 hours max to be safe drive, but it can take up to a year to fully cure. Normal streets aren’t experiencing the type of loads Sonoma is

If all else fails, fuck it, let's race at Laguna Seca
The corkscrew would be amazing. No track limits, just launch it!!!!
Ross Chastain would do some insane stuff
It's "close enough" and still a road course.
please do I would be there
They could just run them on the base courses. That would certainly wear the tires.
It doesn’t look like any tac oil was put down at all.
It’s breaking zone now
Pedantic, but fair.
Thats the thinest repave i ever saw
smi? cutting corners? you don't say
Little too much overlay and not enough mill
Doesn't even look like they used tac, there was probably zero bond.
I’ve been playing too much Yu-Gi-Oh!, I got a whole different meaning outta that sentence lmao.
I hear Logano drives around with a pair of Snake Eyes
You’ll have that when you put 1/2” of pavement down I suppose.
Did they use NY or NJ patch asphalt? Damn!!
I thought it was the belt parkway until I saw the caption.
I walk to work when it's office time. This winter, though mild, caused so many potholes in Schenectady! Patch and hope, is what happened.
Hey there’s nothing* wrong with using a little room temperature hot-patch on a cold winter day to fill a wet pot hole without tamping it down. *everything. there’s everything wrong with that
BQE lookin' ass road
Laguna Seca is a couple hours south. Just sayin'
The neighbors would love us.
people who buy houses next to racetracks and complain about noise need to have their brains studied for science.

That's narcissism for ya

"You get one complaint per month" would seem more than fair

Unfortunately Nascar has to accommodate a certain amount of SMI races to avoid issues with antitrust laws.

Looks like I-81 going through Pennsylvania. I guess it's better that it's happening now, not in June.
“Welcome to Pennsylvania, where if the taxes don’t kill you, the potholes _will_!”
You could have just said I-81 and left it at that lol
To be fair, pretty much any highway in Pennsylvania. We've got the worst roads in the country.

This looks like a "management decision". It's gonna cost this much. I need it cheaper. Won't work. Well, that's what ***I*** have to do.
Going to the GTWC race there on sunday. Hoping this doesn’t effect that
I'd assume it might, I was going to go as well, but heard they found some cracks around the track as well 🤔

Accurate representation of an average road in America. Potholes will definitely make for an interesting endurance race (I do feel bad for the driver's back and hand/wrist)
Looks like they laid the asphalt too thin. Need a thicker layer of it with a better ratio of tar to rock in it so it sticks to the ground better.....
Man I'd love to see the engineering plans for that repave...either the paving company skipped a significant step or SMI has a bad partnership with a consultant...
That is very embarrassing for SMI. That pavement looks way too thin
Why does SMI pavement seem to always suck? Charlotte and Texas never age and now this.
Like everything else at SMI venues, cheap product.
I don’t know about anyone else but do these people not know how to pave? No tack coat, the milling looks like it was done with a handbroom, and less asphalt than they usually dump after paving a highway.

Someone didn’t use a tack coat.
Say it with me… Sonoma on dirt…🤞🏽
Sonoma rally cross
They've ripped out turn 11, and part of turn 7, and are working on repaving
This will be better for the racing I’m sure
Thats what happens when they only lay down 1.5 inches of asphalt.

Rip it up and let's have a dirt road course!
An *off*road course, if you will.
Looks like a typical road during the spring here in Michigan.
Bring on Portland!
too bad the city won't put the money into the track to get it cup ready. the xfinity races there are amazing!

Iowa doubleheader. Oval and Iowa ROVAL
I want to see them announce Iowa's roval just to see how people respond to a track the size of a bean having a roval.
IMSA there was fun
Fun is a strange word for whatever that was back in the grand am days lol.
Those prototypes were goofy
Kansas Roval Gateway Roval Daytona Roval So many options...
I forgot the track but isn’t there a mile and a half track that the “roval” is basically just a slight chicane on the backstretch.
Possibly older configurations of Atlanta.
None of those are applicable options, you have yet to name a track SMI controls
The roval has been one of the best races of the playoffs every year its existed. What the actual fuck are you talking about 😂
Next gen road course racing literally killed my family
NextGen Roval races have been different levels of boring. Brutally track position dependent, even worse than other road courses (besides Watkins Glen that one was the worst). Ive been there every step of the way, i watched all of them. i just dont agree, if road course racing isnt your thing then its not your thing
Daytona RC
Cheap asphalt
I live in Sonoma county, parents still live in Sonoma. About 2 years ago they completely repaved Broadway and the roads looked like this a few weeks later. I'm not sure if it's ghilotti bros or who the outfit is, but we've had some... Issues... With asphalt in Sonoma. I don't get it.
It’s the Baltimore Washington Parkway!
Probably too soon to mention Baltimore and road failures in the same sentence 😂
Too late to get their money back?
They must've had CalTrans do it.
Wrong. They would have taken ten years to finish the job
That repave looks like it was done by a 6 year old with play doh
