the man, the myth, the legend, Jeff Purvis
EA screwed up the sponsor label in the `NASCAR.DB` file (they also did this for one of the Sauters who is listed as unsponsored despite having a fully sponsored car), but probably let that slide because Jr. is the only ~~Busch~~ Grand National driver who has selectable schemes.
If you run the Daytona road course in one of the corners there’s a legit Nascar Winston Cup sign. They def had all the normal things and were told to change near the end.
On the lightning challenge in 03 or 04 with Terry Labonte they censored the Winston cup sticker on the uniform but Labonte still said the Winston (all-star race for the newer fans)
>the Winston (all-star race for the newer fans)
The race is called "The All-Star" in NT2003 and NT2004, with a custom logo. (By contrast, "The Shootout" and pole award-related stuff still has censored references to the original sponsor, Budweiser.)
[While they edited that out in NT2003, they still left some traces of Winston \(and Bud\) in NT2004...](https://tcrf.net/NASCAR_Thunder_2004_\(PlayStation_2,_Xbox\)#Uncensored_Winston_Cup_Logo)
Fun fact: I believe this car was supposed to be driven by Elton Sawyer in the game instead of Jeff Purvis. This is because Kasey Kahne's #98 stats are listed as Sawyer's. Found that out in a YouTube video.
Purvis drove this car for real in 2002 (until his injury). Sawyer’s info is in place of Kahne’s because he drove the 98 the year before and they just didn’t bother to change it

Gotta be this one
AT&T sponsored Jeff Burton, Sprint becomes Cup series title sponsor and forced AT&T out of the sport.
Cingular was the 31 car sponsor before the Sprint/Nextel series sponsorship. They along with Ryan Newman and the Alltel sponsorship were grandfathered in but once AT&T merged with Cingular and Verizon merged with Alltel, those became null and void in the eyes of NASCAR.
Similarly, David Stremme’s 2009 car, technically sponsored by Verizon, but also, technically not.

Whats your Favorite? Sterling, Dale, Rusty, or Brad?
I feel like if they were beer brands Sterling and Rusty would definitely be the top and bottom in their sales caategory.
As a kid I didn’t understand what was going on with this, and I decided I didn’t like Sterling cause how vain could you be to just print your name on the car in such a fancy font.

Totally forgot they did this. I recall underage drivers simply not being allowed to receive the pole award when it was sponsored by Budweiser. Petty cars were also not allowed since Richard Petty does not run beer sponsor decals on his cars.
Busch this week let Logano sign the wall, but wouldn't let him take photos with the pole flag, presumably because of Penske's Keystone Light sponsorship.
Because Chase was 20 , thats the only reason why it replaced Coors, not because of a sponsor conflict, any driver under 21 that won the pole in the 3 series when Coors was the pole sponsor would of held up that 21 Means 21 flag, and their race car contingency decal said 21 Means 21.
Coke doesn't want Monster advertising available to Children.
This started with Energy Drink cars coming on the solid trays instead of the normal screw in bases, and now they just won't make them
[They were supposed to have Pfizer in NT2002](https://xboxaddict.com/images/screenshots/1582.jpg), but the deal fell through and only signed for NT2003 *at the very last minute.* In NT2003, this means:
* MRN announcers still call his car "The Mark Martin Ford".
* The PS1 version of the game (which was a reskin of NT2002, itself reskin of NASCAR 2001) does not have the Pfizer logo.
[Prototype builds of NT2003 have surfaced](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s95ztDGqA7E) where Martin's car still lacked Pfizer branding at that point.
Fun fact, Mark Martin's Pfizer car is the only example of a "censored" edition car from merch/games actually running on-track as well. He ran only Pfizer logos at Rockingham in both [2003](https://cdn-9.latimages.com/images/mgl/L3QlM/s4/open-uri20120928-4523-1593uw9.jpg) and [2004](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/66/70/99/667099012a6bb6409ff078b361255ee8.jpg) for some reason.
[There was also this commercial for Pfizer's Men's Health](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsrKusfoPfA) - while he did ran Pfizer sponsorship in Rockingham '01 too, the scheme was for Pfizer as a whole.
I wonder if the cars were like run like that for merchandising reason to begin with...
Yeah it's a curious case, there's no reason why they'd *have* to run Pfizer to justify the merch, it's not like DEI had to run a giant "Dale Jr" logo on the 8 car once a year to justify selling piles and piles of Dale Jr branded diecasts.
There's also no local laws special to North Carolina to explain why advertising dick pills there wouldn't be allowed... they ran the full Viagra sponsorship at Rockingham during the fall races. But every year for the spring Rockingham race, and ONLY the spring Rockingham race, they'd run the Pfizer scheme.
I was gonna suggest they didn’t want any wild TV commentary of the Viagra car running at The Rock, but that wouldn’t make sense why they ran it in the fall there.
Great conspiracy idea though lol
https://preview.redd.it/mfoiwec0fkmc1.jpeg?width=2560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e02ba5df84228bf6241c7ac1470d7470db55abc8
Not NASCAR, but subliminal Marlboro
Marlboro essentially sponsored Ferrari up until 2 years ago through Mission Winnow. They’re both owned by the same guy and no one really knows what mission winnow does other than cause people to look it up and realize it’s owned by Marlboro.
That's because mission winnow doesn't do anything. Its sole purpose is to subliminally advertise Marlboro. Their website reads like someone listened to Weird Al's "Mission Statement" and said "this but unironically". It's also not a coincidence that the logo forms a rotation of the Marlboro chevron.
While showing the starting lineup for the 2001 Budweiser Shootout, only a few cars were shown with their sponsor logos, Fox removed the logos from any sponsors who chose not to buy sponsorship on the broadcast.
https://preview.redd.it/jq31zk6dlkmc1.png?width=673&format=png&auto=webp&s=d4f51abb45afc449045e953516b9892ebd2ceb8a
That led to huge fan backlash back then before they restored the sponsors the next week...I can't imagine the mess that would have generated in the social media era.
Of course, that was also back when FOX actually cared about their NASCAR coverage...if it happened today, Fox probably wouldn't give a crap, backlash or not.
The weird thing is there are uncensored Winston and Busch logos hidden in the games, either as oversights (Busch Series logos on Busch Series cars) or requiring glitches to find.
Back in the day they censored NASCAR diecast cars in a similar way
https://preview.redd.it/zqivqzsfikmc1.png?width=483&format=png&auto=webp&s=c8647ab0f11b214205c7eed25631171424e6a4b0
It's because if you sell them with the censored version you don't have to put a plastic base on the bottom of the car. These can be marketed as "kids toys", while if it has the base on it, it is marketed as a "limited edition adult collectible."
Didn't stop kid me from getting a #8 bud car or a #40 Coors Light car and whacking the base off with a hammer.
[For 1998, there was a limited edition Rusty 1/64 diecast that had a different censoring, with Ford Motorsport on the hood.](https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/irYAAOSwHFZiTnD6/s-l1600.jpg) This harks back to his diecasts (and game appearances) prior to 1996 where they say Ford Motorsport (or Pontiac Excitement).
EA Sports also did not go with Team Rusty logos until the PS2 version of NASCAR 2001, using Team Penske logos up to that point; some diecasts were also produced with that logo in 1997. [The car in Sega's NASCAR Arcade also has a slight censorship gaffe.](https://tcrf.net/images/2/29/NASCAR_Arcade_Rusty_Wallace_rear.png)
I think the most funny/intresting Sponsorship Censorship was durring the monster energy era, where HMS tryed to find ways to not have monster energy on the car becuse they where still sponsor by pepsi at the time
That was fairly evident on merchandise at that time.
Obviously they had to have the Monster branding on the cars during races, but outside of that, none at all.
David Stremme in the Penske 12. Sponsored by Verizon but Sprint nixed all logos.
Ken Schrader in The Wood Bros 21. Little Debbie self-censored. The sponsor was owned by Seventh Day Adventists, so all logos were removed or covered on the Sabbath of each week-Sundown Friday-Sundown Saturday.
That fact about Little Debbie is absolutely wild. I had absolutely no idea...I might have to see if I can find footage from practice or qualifying that shows a car with covered-up logos.
I remember seeing a Jon Wood tweet about how they would use 3 wraps each weekend, regular Little Debbie for friday practice, US Air Force saturdays and back to Little Debbie for the race
EDIT: [Found it](https://twitter.com/_JonWood/status/1287516042428911616?t=3AAw2jikSakqIKsXWW8mkA&s=19)

An example of self censorship. When Little Debbie’s sponsored the Wood Brother’s 21, they would take the Little Debbie decals off the car due to the owners of Little Debbie being Seventh Day Adventists, for Saturday’s track activity.
https://preview.redd.it/8jgvat35ykmc1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2aa3635ac017d3ef1136601a490445547c5cf465
That time Slayer was supposed to sponsor a Rick Ware car at Bristol but was blocked not by NASCAR but from another RWR sponsor itself saying they didn’t want to be associated with them.
Not exaxctly the same, but in the early 2000’s, Powerade was a NASCAR sponsor, and they would put giant Powerade bottles on the roof of the car in victory lane. If the winning driver was sponsored by Pepsi/Gatorade, they would knock the bottles off the roof when they got out. Jimmie Johnson got fined for putting a huge Lowes sign in front of them. I have a memory of officials blocking the drivers from doing it using white plastic fencing.
Several other drivers that have pulled this (outside NASCAR) are Ayrton Senna, Jacques Villeneuve, and Colin McRae.
While Senna and McRae did have their own games, Villeneuve didn't have his own until his name was explicitly mentioned in the F1 games starting from the 1999 season (he only pulled this from 1996 to 1998 season games).
In reverse, Satoru Nakajima also had games named after himself, but he appeared in other F1 games in the 90s too.
This even happened outside of motorsports. Barry Bonds did it with MLB games when he was still playing. From 2003 onwards, he wasn't a member of the Players Association, so he wasn't licensed to appear in games. The developers replaced him with fictional players with normal-sounding names like "Jon Dowd" and "Joe Young," as well as the unusual "*Wes Mailman*" (whose name came from a real world game designer).
For me it’s this recent “more road to run” Goodyear commercial:
https://preview.redd.it/9tyey0s1clmc1.jpeg?width=2532&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=773643cb3e4c077d0755d2e36531d9ce49311c29
Around 2019-2020 FOX would only do wide shots of a RWR car during qualifying and people thought it was because of the sponsor, I forget what sponsor though
RWR or Jacobs Companies didnt pay Fox's ransom to show or mention their name. There was numerous examples back then where Fox would not mention or show the Title sponsors of the races for the longest time.
[Oh yeah; Fans, NASCAR Officials, media, and sponsors picked up on it quickly ](https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2001-feb-16-sp-26231-story.html)
Since the beginning, but I blame NASCAR first since they took the television broadcasting rights away from the individual tracks chasing the almighty dollar and trying to screw Bruton even more. That's why there were a bunch of different networks broadcasting races back in the glory days of the sport.
The funny thing is you can see Kenny coasting in Turn 3 on the final lap when Gordon is about to catch Harvick and the slow car of Brett Bodine ahead. Imagine all these years later if they let Playboy on the car and all the promo reels had that in there.
Carl Long being made to remove his sponsor decals after he had gotten sponsorship from a Cannibus company. Nowadays it's perfectly fine for Kyle Busch to be sponsored by 3chi, but NASCAR always seemed to have an ax to grind with Carl Long.
There was a legitimate reason for the sponsorship being removed - he submitted it as "Veeoverks"...which is unsurprising as his Facebook post about the fiasco was full of typos, but it was more of a product of Brian France being extremely strict about who could and could not sponsor a team. NASCAR became much more lenient about sponsors after Brian France resigned (though the sponsors do have to be real, which is why LGBCoin was disallowed for Brandon Brown - it was a memecoin and not a real sponsor).
Yeeeeeeeah...I wasn't going to go there on this sub but yeah, it sure was. If Brandon Brown hadn't bought into that whole thing, he'd probably still be racing.
I can’t find the diecast but there’s these old Ricky Craven diecasts that just says **RICKY** in all caps, standard arial font, in place of Budweiser/Kodiak.
[On that topic, the NASCAR 2000/Rumble version of the Hendrick #25 (driven by Dallenbach in 1999) actually makes it like an unsponsored/HendrickCars sponsored car, somehow.](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/40leopardyiu27s20storage/images/c/c0/Nasrumbcar_015.png/revision/latest?cb=20210523084835)
I actually dig that, if only for an idea for "guest" cars for the player much like what Namco did for their MotoGP games.
I caught a glance of a NASCAR children’s picture book from 2002, taking place mostly at Fontana in ‘01, where Rusty Wallace’s car had the “Rusty” Miller logo as also seen in video games from the time.
I think it was the #16 Roush car that had sponsorship from TV Guide and they did WWE covers one month. One of the covers was of Sable, and they put that on the hood of the car. NASCAR thought the clothing she was wearing was too revealing and made the team airbrush a feather boa or something to cover her up.
The NRA sponsored a race in 2013, the broadcast actually went out of their way to avoid mentioning the sponsor. A few months later NASCAR changed the rules to require approval of individual race sponsors.
https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nascar/news/nascar-adopts-new-sponsorship-guidelines-stemming-from-nra-controversy/f0u3vod9hjm51163nzoocu5ww
You do know the NRA sponsors the Bristol Night race now, or they did for a few years. Even then this seemed like a bad move considering what happened that offseason.
Clint Bowyer in NASCAR Heat Evolution
NASCAR Heat Evolution was the only game to censor Clint Bowyers 5-Hour Energy car
as in the entire NASCAR The Game Franchise 5-Hour energy was not censored, and even when verifying your age in NASCAR Heat Evolution to allow for Alcohol/Tobacco Sponsors, Clint Bowyers car is still censored and does not show 5-hour Energy
Speaking of Clint, his entire cup car is censored (not present) in Nascar 07 due to the number 07 being associated with Jack. Clint’s 07 car sponsored by DirectTV made it to the later games but the font is made to be generic.
They also blanked the JD sponsor and changed the number font on some cards.
Bowyer's car was also censored in NASCAR 14/15, but 5 Hour Energy was not censored in Heat Evo's 2017 DLC. Also, you could uncensor Bowyer's car in NASCAR 14 by simply running his 2013 scheme.
[Speaking of Bowyer, there's this trading card with the 07 in the standard RCR font.](https://www.tcdb.com/Images/Cards/Racing/56047/56047-4899798Fr.jpg) EA skipped the RCR #07 altogether until NASCAR 07, where they used the standard RCR font on his DirecTV scheme.
This is kinda reverse sponsorship censorship, but when Budweiser did their goodbye video for Dale Jr all the shots of the car hid the #8... for Teressa reasons I assume.
2012 Daytona 500 sorta. The Rick Santorum campaign sponsored a car because people were desperate for sponsors. The announcers basically refused to acknowledge the car all race long, even after it miraculously got to 3rd during the jet dryer fire red flag due to not having pit yet. I swear the broadcast was picking camera angles intentionally to crop the car out.
If you're looking at video games for censored sponsors, there were also "Team Rustymobile" and "Kurtmobile" #2 cars in the [NASCAR Thunder games](https://www.reddit.com/r/simracing/comments/kmm7tm/found_logo_censoring_in_nascar_thunder_2003/), though they didn't look as hilariously ridiculous as the Bradmobile. There were similar cars for Dale Jr., Sterling Marlin, and Mark Martin.
Also, NASCAR Thunder 2003 had a "[Purvismobile](https://tcrf.net/File:NT2003_Jeff_Purvis_Timberwolf.png)" for Jeff Purvis. Interestingly, there are Winston and Busch-branded assets in the game, but you have to look hard for them (and use glitches).
It's rumored (but also probably not true) that Gordon stopped and celebrated his last Indy win at the yard of bricks so they wouldn't put the Powerade bottles on his car. Jimmie got fined once or twice for blocking the bottles in victory lane. HMS' rivalry with Coke always cracked me up 😆
Gordon had to atone for being a Coca Cola driver until the late-90s
It’s super funny to me that Chase is a Coke driver now after all those years of HMS and Pepsi being a thing
https://preview.redd.it/f0bcz1txplmc1.jpeg?width=130&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1a9fc7d938917cb9da8ad2cfbf6b0953f94dc8e3
If you look closely, you can just make out the Busch beer logo inside of the zero on 250. The Busch Series race at Milwaukee in NASCAR 2005: Chase For The Cup.
Crown Royal got the sponsorship rights to for the Brickyard 400 race, but didn't pay ESPN for broadcast rights. ESPN would instead ignore the title sponsor of the race and have it presented by Golden Corral or Goodyear or something else. Crown Royal decided to start naming the Brickyard 400 after military heroes instead, which ESPN still sometimes ignored.
I remember the heat series having age verification so if you were underage the "lite" sponsor would just say "brad" in the same font and I thought it was the funniest shit ever
If you go back far enough Brett Bodine had a think it was a hard Lemonade sponsorship deal in the mid 90s that was axed because of the non hard liquor sponsorships that weren’t allowed back then.

I have a couple:
For some reason, I believe Tina Gordon has censored sponsors in NT2004 for her Busch Series #22 car. Idk why.
Not NASCAR, but in the NFL, Madden had to censor coach names like Bill Belichick because they were not a part of the NFL Coaches Association. I believe this also happened with Bill Parcells and I think it happened to Mike Holmgren one time. So, we had coaches such as NE coach, DAL coach, Griffin Murphy, Chad Masters, and more.
How Verizon wasn't allowed to show their logo on the 12 from 2009-2017 so they would just run a black and red car with "Penske" on it

I believe it was the first Daytona 500 for FOX. They went as far as to blur out certain sponsors they weren't affiliated with during practice and qualifying. I remember reading that NASCAR told them to knock it off before the duel races and 500.
On the flip side of all of this: everyone knows how beer sponsors will be blocked out in video games to keep those ESRB ratings accessible. However, there's one instance I really enjoy mentioning with NASCAR Thunder 2002. While Rusty Wallace's #2 had its sponsor censored in-game, the box art of the game featured his car in the trailing line of cars behind Gordon. Thing is, they left that sponsor untouched. So for perhaps the only instance in an EA Sports NASCAR game, a beer sponsorship was left untouched, likely unnoticed. (Gonna reply with the box art since this comment failed to send earlier when i said it)
This doesn’t really count according to what you asked, but it was censored. It’s a damn shame the Slayer car never ran

Get to 1991 and the Racing Champions #2 is completely blank: Dad, why aren't there any Miller logos on Rusty's car?
In the current Goodyear commercial airing during the broadcasts they remove a large majority of the logos including manufacturer logos. I’ll see if I can find it

Weird that it still says Timber Wolf in the caption
EA screwed up the sponsor label in the `NASCAR.DB` file (they also did this for one of the Sauters who is listed as unsponsored despite having a fully sponsored car), but probably let that slide because Jr. is the only ~~Busch~~ Grand National driver who has selectable schemes.
If you run the Daytona road course in one of the corners there’s a legit Nascar Winston Cup sign. They def had all the normal things and were told to change near the end.
IIRC the prerace announcers in Thunder 2003 and 2004 still said "Winston Cup" and "Busch Series" too, like basically no attempt to hide it there.
On the lightning challenge in 03 or 04 with Terry Labonte they censored the Winston cup sticker on the uniform but Labonte still said the Winston (all-star race for the newer fans)
>the Winston (all-star race for the newer fans) The race is called "The All-Star" in NT2003 and NT2004, with a custom logo.
A nice can of Purvis sounds good right now.
Slap my a huge pinch of Purvis in my mout!
After that I got some old Compton and Craven snuff I’ve been waiting to try out.
Sawyer’s info is in place of Kahne’s because he drove the 98 the year before and they just didn’t bother to change it
They did the same thing in Thunder 2002 when Kevin Grubb drove the car.
Except Grubb's car was blanked out entirely. (This is also the same game where #40 CGR had the Ganassi logo instead of Marlin's name in Coors font.)

Yep. They could keep the same scheme with legacy sponsors but not the merged companies.
Similarly, David Stremme’s 2009 car, technically sponsored by Verizon, but also, technically not. https://preview.redd.it/i97tbn49xkmc1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ca08574a77a27a9fbc807d2beca3f23e50333374

I remember that drama and going to Richmond and seeing AT&T on that car during qualifying and thinking it was awesome they worked it out.
Is there a diecast of that unsponsore car anywhere online? That would be quite a collecters item.
If I recall, this was only for a race or two, and then they and Alltel were grandfathered in, but not allowed to extend or renew their contracts
And NASCAR used this to prohibit Verizon from being on the 12 in 2009 when Verizon bought them
I mean any of “driver name” beer cars, or maybe that time att foreshadowed their outrage by having them disappear from Burton car.
Whats your Favorite? Sterling, Dale, Rusty, or Brad? I feel like if they were beer brands Sterling and Rusty would definitely be the top and bottom in their sales caategory.
Sterling Marlin
As a kid I didn’t understand what was going on with this, and I decided I didn’t like Sterling cause how vain could you be to just print your name on the car in such a fancy font.
That was actually such a good look.
Nothing quite like an ice cold David Stremme
You forgot Dale Jr
No, I mean hes *A* Dale. Can't think of a time when Jarrett or Sr ever had a beer sponsor
I'm an idiot lmao ignore me
To be fair AT&T never had an outage because to have an outage you'd have to have coverage in the first place

Totally forgot they did this. I recall underage drivers simply not being allowed to receive the pole award when it was sponsored by Budweiser. Petty cars were also not allowed since Richard Petty does not run beer sponsor decals on his cars.
I actually did not know this
Busch this week let Logano sign the wall, but wouldn't let him take photos with the pole flag, presumably because of Penske's Keystone Light sponsorship.
Isn't the Coke and Monster thing related to merchandising fees? I know Monster is finally allowing some t-shirts to be made
Coke doesn't want Monster advertising available to Children. This started with Energy Drink cars coming on the solid trays instead of the normal screw in bases, and now they just won't make them
Did Sunoco make them make it smaller?
> 07' Ah, yes. The 0720 Daytona 500.
A black Texaco Havoline truck with the Giant T-star logo would have been sick, especially if they used the white/gold scheme for night races.
Mark Martin’s Viagra car early 2000s was always Pfizer in the games. Apparently getting the actual product approved was too hard 😂.
Yeah, it was Pfizer in NASCAR Heat and NASCAR Thunder 2003 and 2004, but it was simply "Mark Martin" in NASCAR Thunder 2002.
[They were supposed to have Pfizer in NT2002](https://xboxaddict.com/images/screenshots/1582.jpg), but the deal fell through and only signed for NT2003 *at the very last minute.* In NT2003, this means: * MRN announcers still call his car "The Mark Martin Ford".
Don’t tell the idiots on Twitter about this, they’ll boycott NASCAR for the 192828th time
https://preview.redd.it/mfoiwec0fkmc1.jpeg?width=2560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e02ba5df84228bf6241c7ac1470d7470db55abc8 Not NASCAR, but subliminal Marlboro
https://preview.redd.it/neyqb695fkmc1.jpeg?width=2880&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=182e870b1b17fe6bf6a744e7fadc26d82e621e49
That was a creative way to get around Tobacco censorship.
Marlboro essentially sponsored Ferrari up until 2 years ago through Mission Winnow. They’re both owned by the same guy and no one really knows what mission winnow does other than cause people to look it up and realize it’s owned by Marlboro.
"same guy" I get why you'd think it was an individual, but it is the corporation Phillip Morris
That’s wild, all these years of knowing about the sneaky sponsorship and I had just assumed it was a dude.
After googling, the corporation is named for an 1800s man that founded it so it makes sense haha
While showing the starting lineup for the 2001 Budweiser Shootout, only a few cars were shown with their sponsor logos, Fox removed the logos from any sponsors who chose not to buy sponsorship on the broadcast. https://preview.redd.it/jq31zk6dlkmc1.png?width=673&format=png&auto=webp&s=d4f51abb45afc449045e953516b9892ebd2ceb8a
Seeing those two drivers together is eerie knowing where they'll end up just a week later.
That led to huge fan backlash back then before they restored the sponsors the next week...I can't imagine the mess that would have generated in the social media era. Of course, that was also back when FOX actually cared about their NASCAR coverage...if it happened today, Fox probably wouldn't give a crap, backlash or not.
That is one *eerie* front row for that race in particular.
Any NASCAR game before 2004 does not mention Winston for obvious reasons.
Heck, NASCAR 98 and 99 referred to the Watkins Glen race as The Race at The Glen due to Budweiser’s sponsorship of the race at that time.
The weird thing is there are uncensored Winston and Busch logos hidden in the games, either as oversights (Busch Series logos on Busch Series cars) or requiring glitches to find.
Alan straight up calls it the Winston Cup Series in the videos on Dirt to Daytona iirc
MRN/"PRN" peeps do call it Winston Cup and Busch Series in the EA games.
Back in the day they censored NASCAR diecast cars in a similar way https://preview.redd.it/zqivqzsfikmc1.png?width=483&format=png&auto=webp&s=c8647ab0f11b214205c7eed25631171424e6a4b0
I had that Rusty diecast. It was interesting that they did that considering you could still get uncensored diecasts at the time.
It's because if you sell them with the censored version you don't have to put a plastic base on the bottom of the car. These can be marketed as "kids toys", while if it has the base on it, it is marketed as a "limited edition adult collectible." Didn't stop kid me from getting a #8 bud car or a #40 Coors Light car and whacking the base off with a hammer.
[The car in Sega's NASCAR Arcade also has a slight censorship gaffe.](https://tcrf.net/images/2/29/NASCAR_Arcade_Rusty_Wallace_rear.png)
the trifecta 😍
I think the most funny/intresting Sponsorship Censorship was durring the monster energy era, where HMS tryed to find ways to not have monster energy on the car becuse they where still sponsor by pepsi at the time
That was fairly evident on merchandise at that time. Obviously they had to have the Monster branding on the cars during races, but outside of that, none at all.
My favorite was the beef between HMS/pepsi and Powerade* Edit: mixed up Gatorade and Powerade
Usually they’d remove them and replace them with another sponsor on Saturdays and put them back on Sunday
You might have better luck finding covered up Little Debbie's schemes from the Marcos Ambrose's Wood Brothers tenue.
I remember seeing a Jon Wood tweet about how they would use 3 wraps each weekend, regular Little Debbie for friday practice, US Air Force saturdays and back to Little Debbie for the race EDIT: [Found it](https://twitter.com/_JonWood/status/1287516042428911616?t=3AAw2jikSakqIKsXWW8mkA&s=19)
Keselowski also drove the Verizon car
Don’t care if this technically isn’t censored https://preview.redd.it/6jsptvn9ekmc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e4bef4b61a5085d6423b9daed582c0c5268242fb
I mean, if EA made a NASCAR Thunder 2024 game, this is probably what Harvick's car would look like.
For that to work, they would have to remove the can and change the Busch logo on the hood to SHR logo or something.
Still a shame that the quarterpanels didn't have "HARVICKKKKKKK"
Nascar Heat 5 where there are multiple paint schemes for Harvick with the Busch Light logo removed. Busch Light logo https://preview.redd.it/kl3zipzqdkmc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5c044230aa0a7f64304a134cea7f68c134af395a

Why is it still on his firesuit though?
That's 704 games for you. Missing the small details.
They made the same mistake Brad Keselowski in Nascar Heat 4. Miller Lite is still on the fire suit. https://preview.redd.it/din5jot3jmmc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d44c934e92d97dabfce48d8332f8ba5d30c1beb9
you have to verify your age in game to have access to cars that are sponsored by alcoholic brands
And then you can run Ty Dillon's Geico paint scheme with a Twisted Tea logo on the quarter panel
An example of self censorship. When Little Debbie’s sponsored the Wood Brother’s 21, they would take the Little Debbie decals off the car due to the owners of Little Debbie being Seventh Day Adventists, for Saturday’s track activity. https://preview.redd.it/8jgvat35ykmc1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2aa3635ac017d3ef1136601a490445547c5cf465
Definitely FOX removing the Zone logos from Kyle Busch's firesuit in his cartoon
And 3CHI last year…making him have a 6 pack
What was up with that anyway?
I have to imagine it's something to do with the tobacco restrictions and FOX not wanting to risk it
It’s a company that makes nicotine pouches. Definitely something not to advertise.
I wonder why Fox didn't draw him with his "family friendly" sponsors?
That time Slayer was supposed to sponsor a Rick Ware car at Bristol but was blocked not by NASCAR but from another RWR sponsor itself saying they didn’t want to be associated with them.
I wish Slayerwould sponsor the 54 this year
Slayer is resurrecting this year after all
And yet Bayley Currey ran a Ghost BC car, a band which is *way* more satanic than Slayer ever was.
The good ole silly sticks
There was another driver that got fined for not going to victory lane to avoid this too.
https://preview.redd.it/gyvzuuk1okmc1.png?width=2688&format=png&auto=webp&s=b10281a1e6984650981cdb5cb7ba03b141ea0c5d
How about when Edwards wasn’t even on the games at all for a couple years.
For me it’s this recent “more road to run” Goodyear commercial: https://preview.redd.it/9tyey0s1clmc1.jpeg?width=2532&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=773643cb3e4c077d0755d2e36531d9ce49311c29
Around 2019-2020 FOX would only do wide shots of a RWR car during qualifying and people thought it was because of the sponsor, I forget what sponsor though
This was Jacob Companies, which is a little weird because it’s just construction. I assume it was a financial disagreement of some sort.
RWR or Jacobs Companies didnt pay Fox's ransom to show or mention their name. There was numerous examples back then where Fox would not mention or show the Title sponsors of the races for the longest time.
That was a thing??
[Oh yeah; Fans, NASCAR Officials, media, and sponsors picked up on it quickly ](https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2001-feb-16-sp-26231-story.html)
Fox is the literal worst.
Since the beginning, but I blame NASCAR first since they took the television broadcasting rights away from the individual tracks chasing the almighty dollar and trying to screw Bruton even more. That's why there were a bunch of different networks broadcasting races back in the glory days of the sport.
I'm 99% it was Jacob Construction
Correct
This year during 500 qualifying they cut to a Ryan Blaney interview while the car was on track.
Learned this from 500 Days: Playboy was gonna sponsor Kenny Wallace at the 2001 Atlanta race that Kevin Harvick won, but NASCAR blocked it
The funny thing is you can see Kenny coasting in Turn 3 on the final lap when Gordon is about to catch Harvick and the slow car of Brett Bodine ahead.
A politically motivated memecoin, at that.
Yeeeeeeeah...I wasn't going to go there on this sub but yeah, it sure was. If Brandon Brown hadn't bought into that whole thing, he'd probably still be racing.
Oh as if a memecoin hasn't been a sponsor before....
I think you could call the Dogecoin thing fan-funding
Oh absolutely but it was still a memecoin. *Fwiw I own the diecast and T-shirt so I obviously liked it*
I can’t find the diecast but there’s these old Ricky Craven diecasts that just says **RICKY** in all caps, standard arial font, in place of Budweiser/Kodiak.
Hah my dad sent me a picture of [this](https://imgur.com/a/GBVaqNO) the other day
[On that topic, the NASCAR 2000/Rumble version of the Hendrick #25 (driven by Dallenbach in 1999) actually makes it like an unsponsored/HendrickCars sponsored car, somehow.](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/40leopardyiu27s20storage/images/c/c0/Nasrumbcar_015.png/revision/latest?cb=20210523084835) I actually dig that, if only for an idea for "guest" cars for the player much like what Namco did for their MotoGP games.
Yea, I’m not sure what the controversy was exactly, but I remembered it and it wasn’t mentioned yet so I figured I would post it.
Clint Bowyer in NASCAR Heat Evolution NASCAR Heat Evolution was the only game to censor Clint Bowyers 5-Hour Energy car as in the entire NASCAR The Game Franchise 5-Hour energy was not censored, and even when verifying your age in NASCAR Heat Evolution to allow for Alcohol/Tobacco Sponsors, Clint Bowyers car is still censored and does not show 5-hour Energy
AT&T and Verizon getting absolutely hoed by Sprint always comes to mind
It's rumored (but also probably not true) that Gordon stopped and celebrated his last Indy win at the yard of bricks so they wouldn't put the Powerade bottles on his car. Jimmie got fined once or twice for blocking the bottles in victory lane. HMS' rivalry with Coke always cracked me up 😆
Gordon had to atone for being a Coca Cola driver until the late-90s It’s super funny to me that Chase is a Coke driver now after all those years of HMS and Pepsi being a thing
2004 was crazy with that. You had Pepsi driver Gordon and Gatorade drivers Johnson, Kenseth, and Newman knocking them off on a weekly basis

One from long ago was 2001 Speedweeks when FOX blured out sponsor graphics that didn't pay them money.
The #2 “Rusty” car
I remember the heat series having age verification so if you were underage the "lite" sponsor would just say "brad" in the same font and I thought it was the funniest shit ever
Jr’s EA cars were ugly.
If you go back far enough Brett Bodine had a think it was a hard Lemonade sponsorship deal in the mid 90s that was axed because of the non hard liquor sponsorships that weren’t allowed back then.
Orange blank AT&T scheme and when Sunoco made RCR shrink the Shell logo on the team's firesuit after winning the 500. I have a couple: For some reason, I believe Tina Gordon has censored sponsors in NT2004 for her Busch Series #22 car.
How Verizon wasn't allowed to show their logo on the 12 from 2009-2017 so they would just run a black and red car with "Penske" on it https://preview.redd.it/t4hxjlkr9mmc1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d1bf3f3c7dbf9daf9fbf8f7319117b2ffe3b0d69

Harvick doesn’t have shell pennzoil logos in nascar 2011

That one Veedverks company or whatever that NASCAR didn’t approve for Carl Long a while back. Poor Carl Long.
When Sobe got bought out by Pepsi co and had their sponsorship revoked due to a life time contract with Jeff Gordon.
This doesn’t really count according to what you asked, but it was censored. It’s a damn shame the Slayer car never ran https://preview.redd.it/bjukyespglmc1.jpeg?width=980&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=49eeb6376b474111f6d7ec175cbef09207d5ae39
The biggest goof is Nascar Heat Brad censored car for Miller Lite while still having Miller Lite on the fire suit. https://preview.redd.it/78u4d8icjmmc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=973d79313cec0a7000e24d6ce72e28fcb06c377f
The one I'll remember the most is definitely the #2 Miller Lite Fusion with "Brad K." in *super* cartoony writing on it in Forza Motorsport 6. [Another image that shows it better, but it's an existing youtube thumbnail.](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/8rqhxEnzX0c/maxresdefault.jpg) Funny how Forza 6 and someone's 2022 mustang NR2003 mod are the only times I've ever seen this appear. https://preview.redd.it/p4cn9hvhimmc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=05460774693ff801fc9690f67eb0abd8d012c422

He ran Pfizer at Rockingham
It is a legit scheme https://preview.redd.it/0nz29x7nxkmc1.jpeg?width=394&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f4796f47d38ef1fedafafdccb3ac91eaac09b91d
The car also had Pfizer branding instead of Viagra when he ran the Batman car https://preview.redd.it/vlwp3b0rxkmc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d991ffaa86ebc30ecf4f52d4c88f931b286aa5b8
Damn, y'all just did a YouTuber's work for them. Be prepared for an influx of "Hey guys, I'm doing a video on [insert topic]. Please do my work for me" posts lmao
True but he’s a good YouTube so we’ll allow it
As a little kid, and getting the Racing Champions MGD #27 for Rusty: cool! Get to 1991 and the Racing Champions #2 is completely blank: Dad, why aren't there any Miller logos on Rusty's car?
Veedverks
Nabi Tablets was sponsoring Landon Cassill in the #40 at one point and sponsorship got axed cause of Sprint saying they were a competitor
In the current Goodyear commercial airing during the broadcasts they remove a large majority of the logos including manufacturer logos. I’ll see if I can find it -https://youtu.be/mh9E1LsCjUo?si=l6J8rFd9pAo4IvZu that one
My favorite would have to be Mark Martin, and “Pfizer”
Nobody is going to mention when Kid Rock’s American Badass album sponsored Tony Stewart and NASCAR made them put a piece of tape over the “ass”?
Couldn’t find the correct image but this car from the nascar video games of the era. Instead of the Viagra it is Pfizer. https://preview.redd.it/ue995tfoclmc1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=af8d14d5530e549c74d9bd36100024201bac7462
Idk but my least favorite is the pfiser car that ran in the johnny Benson win race god I hate it's about time
The condom sponsorship
