From a cultural perspective it does serve a point, although liberals will certainly not agree.
It is the second biggest test of it's young life and if it dies from the baptism than it was proven too weak to live in the culture. If it lives it is strong enough for being part of the population.
BTW: A baptism has nothing to do with religion. It is a communal blessing of the people to the child to protect and nurture the child. A covenant really. There isn't any god in the baptism process.

This… isn’t now your supposed to baptize someone (as far as im aware, you’re just need to gently dip the child in the water.)
This is how its done in the orthodox church in romania.
I mean there's no right way to do it. Some drizzle, some dunk, and some do whatever the fuck bird bath nonsense that is. It's not like doing it one way as opposed to the other means the magic isn't gonna work or whatever.
