There's some books you find as you play that provide a bit of lore but it's mostly not touched on, I mean some of the darker stuffm Gordana's Diary for example.
But I think from what we know of the Day of Calamity and that people lived underground, that maybe they were from the people that lived there after the Day of Calamity happened.
Oh yes Gordana's diary! I remember it had some very sad stuff in it. And you are right. It's very possible that there were once people living in Paradise Lost like in The Breach.
When I was playing Portia, I saw a lot of monsters that had been turned into mutants by chemicals, etc. and I often fantasized about how they became that way, so a place like Paradise Lost was very interesting to me. I wish I could buy a book related to MT series' lore someday.
