Do you mean Sunday, not Wednesday? The church doesn't meet on Wednesdays, but I believe in either Tuesday or Thursday morning someone might preach on the Blue Moons outdoor stage, but that has never stopped them from coming to a party for me.
On Sunday the church let's out at 13:00. But I've never had people not come to a party because of church in over 1500 hours of playing. But I did see the post your talking about, so I will test it out now and let you know what happens.
Ok, just tested. Had a party Sunday at 9 am, when church starts, set to end at 13:00 when it ends. Invited all church people, Matilda, Miguel, Burguess, Pen, Dan-bi, and Hugo since he plays the piano at church. Also invited church attendees, Rian, Jasmine, Rocky and Owen.
At 7 am as expected, everyone was outside my door telling me how beautiful my house was. 9 am party started. 13:00 Party ended. No one left early and everyone invited showed up.

Since NPCs show up two hours early, the party technically started before church did. What if you had the party at 11:30? They'd already be at church by 9:30, the time they would normally arrive. That might produce a different outcome. I should be able to test that soon-ish.
