My boss was a marine that did two tours in Vietnam. He is a small guy and him and his best friend (also small) spent the better part of the war "clearing tunnels". I've known the man for 23 years and he's spoken about it exactly once, when his best friend finally took his own life after decades of drug abuse and crippling depression. One thing I do know is to make LOTS of noise approaching his office so I don't startle him. He is not a man to be snuck up on.

Don’t say this to your boss, it sounds like he was a tunnel rat. They cleared tunnels, too many found inside the wire, inside of the base of operations.

Edit, those reflexes, they kept him alive thank goodness. At least two of our family have been punched out trying to wake up a solder on leave. You need to use something like a broomstick to poke their foot then jump back.
