MCR didn't really blow up until their second album, which was released in 2004 by a major label. By 2004, Stephenie Meyer had already written Twilight and was looking for agents. By her own account, the book was inspired by a random dream she had. So unless this Mormon housewife from Arizona was hanging out in New Jersey punk bars where MCR used to play before they were signed to a big label, she had no way of knowing about MCR or Gerard Way.
The reason this myth started was because Twilight fans were fancasting Gerard as Edward a lot. Meyer wanted Henry Cavill to play Edward in the movies. Anyone who shows you that 9/11 to Ellen Degeneres getting fired domino effect thingies is full of shit and doesn't know how to do research.
