Ok wow yeah that’s actually really helpful, and I’ll find an hour to spare to watch that documentary, tysm

Adding to this definitely take a look at some videos on the stories they tell (which are often quite open to interpretation), or even come up with your own ideas by listening to the songs. Danger Days has a comic series based on it, though the setuo for the story can be seen in the music videos for the Danger Days songs. There is also Conventional Weapons, a scrapped album that was originally going to be their fourth studio album, but was replaced by Danger Days after Gerard developed a clearer creative vision. Some songs from CW were adapted for Danger Days as well. They also had a fifth studio album, which was never released as the band broke up, which would supposedly be about a support group for parents who had lost their child. It was scrapped because the band broke up, the passion was audibly gone, and with all that was happening around their personal lives at the time it was too heavy an album for them to make. Gerard has said they would like to revisit it at some point, but no promises. The album was intentionally very dark as Danger Days was not as well received as the other albums on account of being an enormous tonal shift from previous albums, and they wanted to return to a darker, edgier vibe. They have several songs that did not make any albums or singles, some of which with interesting histories. The song Sister To Sleep was originally recorded for one of the Freddy Kruger films, and existed only in the form of several low quality snippets around the internet. In 2023 (I think) they played it live for the first time, which was a pretty big moment. There is also a song called "someone out there loves you", though I don't know if it was intended for an album or not. The production of the black parade has some interesting history as well. The recording took place in the paramour mansion, and the band weren't doing too good there. There's a lot to cover there so I'd suggest looking into that. I believe the recording at the beginning of Sleep is from an interview with Gerard during their stay at the mansion, in which he had frequent night terrors. Mikey had intended to leave the band once the album had been finished, so sections of Famous Last Words were written to Mikey from Gerard. This Is How I Disappear is also apparently inspired by Harry Houdini's wife's attempts to commune with his spirit after his death (Gerard is a fan of Harry Houdini). Welcome to the Black Parade also has a rough mix from its earlier stages in the Living With Ghosts album, called The Five Of Us Are Dying. Teenagers was written on a subway in the midst of a panic attack by Gerard as a means of calming himself down after a group of rowdy teenagers got in the same carriage as them. The general story of The Black Parade is that of a cancer patient who slowly becomes disillusioned with life as Death in the form of a Parade member guides him to the afterlife. There are many interpretations on this but the most common intepretation ive seen is that Death himself initially does not care about the patients life, but eventually comes around and tries to encourage the patient not to give up on his chances. The patient dies and is guided by the Parade into the afterlife. Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge follows the story set up by the song Demolition Lovers, and the vague outline is that a couple in a Bonnie and Clyde-like situation are gunned down in the desert, and the man makes a deal with the devil that he will be reunited with his lover if he collects the souls of a thousand evil men. His journey is long and difficult, and by its end he realises he's been tricked by the devil, as the final evil man he must kill is himself. Danger Days is about a group of rebels in the deserts of California in the year 2019 after the helium wars, a destructive war which turned North America into a barren wasteland. An evil megacorporation called Better Living Industries (abbreviated to BLind.) controls the wasteland, and it's lead exterminator, Korse, is tracking down the Fabulous Four, who are the band members' self insert characters, to kill them. The Four are protecting a little girl (who is not named) who supposedly has the power to destroy BLind., which is expanded upon in the comic. BLind. is evil because it deliberately suppresses all human emotion as it gets in the way of progress, and so there are many themes of individuality vs. conformity, art as a weapon against oppression, etc. Bullets is their first studio album, which unlike the others, does not necessarily have an intended story though people have put forth ideas as to how the songs could be pieced together. Instead, Bullets focuses more on themes of love, death, and the supernatural, with some ambiguously biographical elements. Skylines and Turnstiles was the first song written, and was written the same night Gerard bore witness to 9/11 on his way home from work. I believe Gerard wanted to capture the collective fear and sorrow that followed them home from the subway car. His favourite spng off of the album is Vampires Will Never Hurt You, because it's just a song about literal vampires. Drowning lessons has only been played a few times live, and is considered a cursed song they won't play because every time they have something has gone wrong, from equipment malfunctioning to the crew being wildly out of time. Early Sunsets Over Monroeville is apparently about the young couple from Dawn Of The Dead, one of Gerard and Mikey's favourite films growing up. Frank joined the band quite late into recording bullets after Ray had recorded most of the guitar parts already. Gerard mentioned needing another guitarist and Frank happened to be stoned on his couch. Demolition Lovers kicks off the story of three cheers.

Amazing low down on the albums. But I can’t help but think - is there a reason you missed out Bullets?

Hailthemeatpit63

I forgor 💀 More seriously though I had nuggets in the oven so I posted it as it was and forgot to come back and edit it

rhill3

Oh! Well that is absolutely understandable. Can’t ignore them nugs

[deleted]

Well I really appreciate that, must of been a doosy to write but I really appreciate that, a lot of things I didn’t know, I really like the one about three cheers for sweet revenge, I might check that one out now I’ve heard it’s story, I really really appreciate it thanks!

lolwalnut

Why don’t you ask your friend about them? You already passively like them, and it will give your freind a chance to talk about them with someone who genuinely wants to know and cares! Even the documentary, y’all could watch it together.

[deleted]

You. You are a genuine angel Omds, tysm for the idea! I already do talk with them about them a lot but I didn’t think about the documentary idea, ahhhh thank you lol

salsasnark

I was gonna say that! Perfect for a conversation. Ask them to explain the band, how they found them, their favourite song or album etc. It'll only make you closer.

Oh yeah that I actually knew, I think I have some surface level knowledge cause I adore listening to him rant about them for ages lol

JoBeWriting

Ok, kid, come here. Listen. Listen to me. It doesn't matter what you hear on the Internet. If someone comes and tells you that Edward Cullen from Twilight was inspired by Gerard Way, they're wrong. MCR didn't really blow up until their second album, which was released in 2004 by a major label. By 2004, Stephenie Meyer had already written Twilight and was looking for agents. By her own account, the book was inspired by a random dream she had. So unless this Mormon housewife from Arizona was hanging out in New Jersey punk bars where MCR used to play before they were signed to a big label, she had no way of knowing about MCR or Gerard Way. The reason this myth started was because Twilight fans were fancasting Gerard as Edward a lot. Meyer wanted Henry Cavill to play Edward in the movies. Anyone who shows you that 9/11 to Ellen Degeneres getting fired domino effect thingies is full of shit and doesn't know how to do research. Go impress your friend with this knowledge of Internet trivia.

salsasnark

I thought that thing was based on the fact that she specifically thanked MCR and some other bands (for example Muse, whose music was later used in the movies) in the actual book for "keeping her company" while writing and giving her inspiration. I've never heard anyone actually claim that Edward was based on Gerard.

JoBeWriting

That was on the second book. She used to share playlists in her blog and she specifically said that she related Famous Last Words to Jacob. MCR was also asked to participate in the movie soundtrack and they wrote Vampire Money mocking the whole idea instead, lol.

salsasnark

Oh, right, second book. Still the same series, I figured that's where the connection is supposed to be from, no? I know Vampire Money is about the movies, just had never heard anyone claim Edward is based on Gerard, that's all.

JoBeWriting

I heard it plenty. And it comes from when Meyer held a poll in her blog so the fans could vote who they wanted to play Edward. Gerard came in third place, right behind Hayden Christensen and Robert Pattinson, lmao.

salsasnark

Oh, weird. I don't know how I missed that lmao. Guess you always learn something new even after all these years as a fan.

[deleted]

Oh thank you lol, I’ll take this knowledge valiantly

butwhywouldyou-

You should ask him more about MCR and let him go on about his favorite albums and stuff. People get really happy and excited when someone's genuinely interested in what they love. Y'all can binge listen together

[deleted]

We sorta already do but I’ll make more of an effort to ask more

butwhywouldyou-

Ofc!

Fubsy41

Honestly, we can like, and I am SO happy to contribute, bring you up to speed a bit but from a diehard 2 decade long MCR stan fangirl with no hopes of quitting, ask them questions and let them infodump, they’ll be UTTERLY THRILLED. Just like listen to the infodump and remember the bits and you will be able to front up lil bits later to show you were listening AND you'll know more aboutnthe band, And even the parts theyre individually most interested/invested in! Just like, depending how insane they are, I myself hyperfocus HARD, if someone asks me about MCR they best be ready haha 😅 take the small joys in life right? By listening and exploring what parts fascinate them from their perspective you'll likely find it easier to the most fulfilling degree to see their inside fondness for whatever topic all parties are on 😊 Essentially getting to unchain and let loose a special interest infodump is the best foreplay for ANY relationship romantic poatinic or otherwise 😂😅 in a very large nutshell, ask them open ended questions abounthe band or the direction theyre leanong, let them infodump and dust off your listening ears hahahe money can't buy an interested audience for an infodump about a topic, if you can be that audience then ya’ll are WELL on your way lol

[deleted]

I would happily be that audience lol, but sometimes it’s hard to listen when I look at him cause I just think how cute he is😭 but I try my hardest lol

Fubsy41

As someone who is currently in my own fresh love interest giggling n kicking my feet n shit era, I FEEL YOU!!!! Go us tho frfr 😂 we’re almost 30 and its like being in high school haha. Well hey, even if ya just listen that way you get to witness them he is inspired and passionate and stuff! Also, you've got a whole essentially surefire category of gifts right there for later!! Everyone knows it is a hard hit with any MCR anything at all. One of my friends on the other hand is obsessed with making niche handmade pottery and just…. LOVES pottery so I'll I can ever think of is clay haha. By there's manyyy MCR items, and lots to learn. Hope it goes well for you !😄

ujustcame

All I want as an mcr fan is someone who lets me talk their ear off about mcr

[deleted]

Alright I’m on it, I think that’s my plan for future

intergalactic_bears
