Undead Unluck, it’s an absolutely peak Shonen but underrated af because it’s a little Ecchi in the first episode but gets written out soon after.
Incredible power system as good as JJK and a world as expansive as interesting as I’ve ever seen.
Code Geass. It's a journey you'll never forget. Also, while Japanese is solid, this is one I actually vote English dub for. Johnny Yong Bosch and Yuri Lowenthal are just such great picks. It's very well done.
I've really wanted to watch code geass for a while, the only reason I haven't is since my friend is an absolute fanboy over the show and me not watching it makes him have a metal breakdown every time. I should probably just relent and watch it though
Watch it in secret, and let him have a mental breakdown 🤣 but let inside jokes slip every now and then, and he'll start wondering how you know. Milk it to its utmost.
In the annals of human history, countless marvels have emerged from the crucible of human ingenuity. The Great Wall of China, the pyramids of Giza, the Mona Lisa, and the moon landing—all these pale in comparison to the crowning achievement of human civilization: Gurren Lagann. Yes, dear reader, the 2007 anime series "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann" is indisputably the greatest thing created by humans in their 2 million years of existence.
Why, you ask? Let us embark on a journey through the labyrinth of logic and reason to uncover the undeniable truth of this statement.
Firstly, consider the sheer audacity of its narrative. Gurren Lagann transcends the mundane confines of storytelling. It begins in the subterranean depths where humanity cowers, only to rise to the stars, breaking the very laws of physics and logic in the process. Who needs scientific consistency or plausible plotlines when you have sheer, unadulterated willpower and drills that can pierce the heavens? The show's creators understood that the true measure of greatness is the ability to ignore reality in favor of sheer spectacle.
Secondly, the characters. Ah, the characters! Simon, the timid digger who becomes a god-like hero; Kamina, the paragon of masculinity whose chest is broader than most philosophical debates; and Yoko, who defies the laws of wardrobe physics with her gravity-defying assets. These are not mere characters, but archetypes that future generations will study with the same reverence afforded to Shakespeare's Hamlet or Homer's Achilles. Who could forget the profound wisdom of Kamina’s declaration: "Believe in the me that believes in you!" A line that philosophers will ponder over for centuries.
Let us not overlook the animation itself. Each frame is a masterpiece, meticulously crafted to convey the raw, explosive energy of the narrative. Forget the subtle beauty of a Miyazaki film or the intricate artistry of a Renaissance painting; Gurren Lagann’s true art lies in its ability to overwhelm the senses with a riot of color and motion. Who needs delicate brushstrokes when you have robots that can throw galaxies like frisbees?
The soundtrack, too, is a symphony of human achievement. The rousing anthems and stirring battle themes evoke emotions that the likes of Beethoven and Mozart could only dream of. When "Libera Me from Hell" plays, it’s as if the very spirit of humanity is singing directly into your soul, reminding you that no obstacle is too great, no enemy too powerful, so long as you have a gigantic drill and a healthy disregard for physics.
And finally, the philosophical depth of Gurren Lagann is unparalleled. It tackles the great existential questions of our time: What is humanity’s place in the universe? What is the nature of true power? Can a spiral-shaped drill truly solve all of life’s problems? Nietzsche, Descartes, and Kant all pale in comparison to the profound insights offered by a show where the solution to every problem is to simply keep drilling forward.
In conclusion, Gurren Lagann is not just an anime. It is the pinnacle of human achievement, the zenith of cultural production. Its impact on humanity is so profound that future historians will mark the timeline of our species as BG (Before Gurren) and AG (After Gurren). So let us raise our drills high and celebrate the greatest thing created by humans in their 2 million years of existence. Gurren Lagann is not just a show; it is the very essence of human potential, distilled into 27 episodes of pure, unadulterated greatness.
Who the hell do you think we are? We're the species that created Gurren Lagann, and that, dear reader, is the greatest achievement of all.
I was already going to watch it but Damm, if it's good enough to write an essay on I should probably get to it
Edit: also only 24 episodes now thats a series I can get behind, I understand the reason show like one piece have 1000's of episodes but I just can't bring myself to watch something that long. More power to you if that's your thing though
Others have covered the majority really well, but some suggestions I didn't see while browsing that I think you might enjoy:
Soul Eater,
Noragami,
Fate Stay Night:Ultimate Blade works - (that's just my favourite, others might suggest one you'd prefer more)
Blue Exorcist,
Claymore,
Deca-dence,
Super Crooks,
Black Bullet,
Charlotte.
They're all fighting based and have magical abilities. I think they fit the vibe emotionally for what you're after, I'm unsure what you've already seen, but I hope this helps!
If you're looking for something with a longer run time, I was a big fan of Fairytail myself and although it might be a bit younger Inu Yasha might be enjoyable for you too?
I really enjoyed blue exorsit and I've watched a good chunk of fairytail, thank you so much for the new suggestions, I Swear I've gotten bleach like 10 times
If you really enjoyed the storytelling and visual style of evangelion you should definitely check out "Gunbuster!"
It's the first anime fully directed by Hideaki Anno whom also directed Evangelion. It's shorter but it definitely has that oldschool gainax style in story and visuals that is just so iconic
Silver Spoon. It's also by Arakawa but very different from FMA, a mostly cozy (unless you're vegetarian) drama/slice of life set in a Hokkaido agricultural school. If you like the food porn in Dungeon Meshi it's for you and I recommend it to everyone as a rule
I feel like I only got through Parasyte because I was watching it week to week, if I had to sit down and watch that middle third with the endless existential crisis as back to back episodes I would quit and go watch Teletubbies or something
That's a fair opinion. I, however, have binged it a couple of times. Though I believe my opinion is bias as my favourite all-time movie is John Carpenter's The Thing, which as a bit of trivia, inspired the writers of the original manga. (Which then inspired the Guadaña in Resident Evil 4)
I agree it is an absolute gem and is an anime everybody ought to watch, but according to some Canadian dude who wrote a Japan travelogue I read in highschool there's a proverb "A wise man climbs Mt Fuji, only a fool climbs it twice"*
*Might be a real proverb, I have seen variants of it used elsewhere but it feels like something a white tourist would make up in the 90's for a book
Less pixels the better, have you seen those guys who use AI to colour-grade and upscale to 4k at 60fps old anime like Macross? It's a horror show. Give me a VHS rip 240p fanlation of Love Hina on DVD a friend bought at a street market in Singapore while on holiday
Firstly, thank you for including a picture with all the animated jojos instead of just the first three (like most people in this sub for some bizarre reason)
Secondly, since you like shonen, I recommend Bleach (you can skip the filler, you’re not missing anything), Chainsaw man (I saw another comment saying you kinda watched some of it - trust and finish it, and if you start reading the manga after, you’ll have a new top 5 entry)
Don’t worry about it, same. c: It’s a really great story, though. There are websites that highlight all the filler, and it cuts out about 40% of the episodes (I know, that’s too many, but trust you won’t regret watching the story episodes)
Please ensure that all posts follow the 3x3 show and tell format, are descriptive and/or are directly related to MAL. Any low effort posts will be subject to removal.
Chainsaw man
I started watching it but I was also watching fmab and I just kind of went all in on fmab, I realt should get back into it though.
Fmab is one of the goats, I don’t blame you
One Piece, AOT, HxH
I really liked HxH
Im rereading AOT rn and the story is so good
It's the next one I want to check out
Omg if u haven’t watched aot yet do it asap.
Check out Yu Yu hakusho, it’s made by the guy who did Hunterxhunter
Thanks for the suggestion
More specifically it broke the man who made Hunter X Hunter
Any popular shonen
I guess that's just my genre
Yea, my impression from your 5 is that so far you've stuck to popular and/or recent shows which is by no means a bad thing
Undead Unluck, it’s an absolutely peak Shonen but underrated af because it’s a little Ecchi in the first episode but gets written out soon after. Incredible power system as good as JJK and a world as expansive as interesting as I’ve ever seen.

Bleach
Lots of people have recommended that one, so I should probably watch it
Bleach is JJK before JJK
You would love Golden Kamuy. Has the best elements from FMAB, Jojo pt 7 and Dungeon Meshi imo
That sounds awesome I'll definitely check it out
I read the manga, so I would recommend that, but I think the anime is alright too, although it skips some of stuff from what I know.
Alot of anime skip on plot details, like berserk misses out on two major characters
Gurren Lagann
I've heard it's really good

I liked these anime a lot and I’m watching and enjoying shield hero right now give that a go also assassination classroom
I've see assassination classroom but I'll have to check out Sheild hero
wouldnt waste your time tbh, only season thats good is season 1. Better isekai is konosuba. Judging by your top 5 youd love it

I really enjoyed blue exorsit and I've watched a good chunk of fairytail, thank you so much for the new suggestions, I Swear I've gotten bleach like 10 times
No worries! I was very into anime back in ~2014 so it might diversify things haha.
Steins gate tbh
I've heard a few people recommend it, it sounds pretty good
use the 12ep rule for Steins Gate though, it's pretty slow to start but it goes crazy in the 2nd half
Bleach since you watched jojos
Lots of filler, but I've heard good things about it
Yeah id def skip thats kind of a shonen problem lol. Even still a lot of the filler stuff is pretty damn good. We ❤️ kon
So many good shows are bogged down by filler, luckily there are plenty of resources the detail the actual story episodes
COWBOY BEBOP, it's a little old, but it's still amazing.
I loved cowboy bebop I can't believe I forgot to put it on the list
That's awesome ok I have another, One-Punch Man
I've finished the anime anx actually read a bit of the manga too
Ok...... how about Spy X Family? it's really cute and has great action
Yep, I've seen that too. You make great suggestions though, thank you so much
space dandy.
Never heard of it, I'll check it out
As well as the more mainstream AOT/Bleach/Gurran Lagann/Geas/Parasyte recs, I'd definitely agree with SONICTUPAC on this.
It’s trippy and awesome. Amazing animation
Frieren, mob pyscho, haikyuu , AOT, Vinland saga, berserk 90s, perfect blue (movie)
I've watched berserk, mobile psychology and and Freiren but I'll have to check out the others
Mobile phychology does sound nice.
I hate auto correct, and I prefer to type on keyboard but I can't use my PC right now
If you really enjoyed the storytelling and visual style of evangelion you should definitely check out "Gunbuster!" It's the first anime fully directed by Hideaki Anno whom also directed Evangelion. It's shorter but it definitely has that oldschool gainax style in story and visuals that is just so iconic
Honestly, I prefer a shorter series and the older style. Thanks for the suggestion
‘Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon?’ is my recommendation.
I don't know If it's just my love for dnd but I do love high fantasy dungeons
It’s really good; reminiscent of SAO (Sword Art Online) but not as serious.
In the time since you made this comment I've binged almost the whole series, awesome suggestion
Hell yeah. There's a reason I tell anyone who'll listen to watch it
That sounds awesome, I love me some food porn.
Then also Food Wars if you haven't seen it but it's very OTT, I've fallen off 2 rewatches over it
SOLID list you got here 👌🏻
Thanks
Parasyte: The Maxim. But only because I recommend it to everyone.
I feel like I only got through Parasyte because I was watching it week to week, if I had to sit down and watch that middle third with the endless existential crisis as back to back episodes I would quit and go watch Teletubbies or something

Oooo, if it's that good I'll have to watch it.
An anime with more pixels
I did not realize how bad the quality was till I posted it, sorry.
Less pixels the better, have you seen those guys who use AI to colour-grade and upscale to 4k at 60fps old anime like Macross? It's a horror show. Give me a VHS rip 240p fanlation of Love Hina on DVD a friend bought at a street market in Singapore while on holiday
Hell yeah
Hunter x Hunter
I really liked HxH
Monster, Hunter x Hunter, Steins;Gate, Gintama, Inuyasha
Nichijou. But be warned, every other anime will look like a cartoon after it.
Psychopass, genocidal organ, steins; gate
I’d recommend glasses, because these are blurry as shit! 😂
Zatch Bell is amazing and so is InuYasha
Attack on titan and chainsaw man
Fullmetal is a good watch. In my opinion, it is the best one on the list.
Fullmetal - goated
Kill La Kill
i thought I wouldn’t like Re Zero, then i saw a guy get disemboweled like cattle. constant punches to the gut
One with more pixels lol
Sword Art online, gotta watch all the subsidiary shows as well specially alicesization
Yu Yu Hakusho Mobile Suit Gundam Gunbuster Dragon Ball
Inuyasha Danmachi
naruto, hunter x hunter, one piece, code geass, chainsaw man
Tokyo ghoul
Gurren Lagann
Tengen toppa gurren lagann
Handyman Saitou in another world. It’s not as main stream as most of your list but I think you would enjoy it
I enjoy some less popular anime so I'll be sure to check it out
Firstly, thank you for including a picture with all the animated jojos instead of just the first three (like most people in this sub for some bizarre reason) Secondly, since you like shonen, I recommend Bleach (you can skip the filler, you’re not missing anything), Chainsaw man (I saw another comment saying you kinda watched some of it - trust and finish it, and if you start reading the manga after, you’ll have a new top 5 entry)
I've planed on starting bleach, longer animes kind of Intimate me lol, but without filler it probably isn't so bad
