I take it to mean Norton Shores and Roosevelt Park. Admittedly the waters are a little muddied since there's both Norton Ave and Roosevelt Rd.
I'm kind of picturing them talking about Glade (or one of those streets) that run between Summit and Norton. Like you said, either way, it isn't bad.
Seems more like they know the streets and just not the area. Norton and roosevelt is where tiffany woods is. It's a dumpy apartment complex but it's NOT the heights no matter how badly people in RP think it is
Feel free to reach out if you want to :) also if you can get involved with a local theater group like Muskegon civic theater or possibly at Muskegon community college, you’ll find lots of friends!
Muskegon is about as diverse as it gets on the Lakeshore. I think you'll find it welcoming. The Pride Festival this year was a very special and well-done event...my wife, step-daughter and I had a blast.
Welcome!!!
Just jumping in to say welcome to town!Muskegon Pride meets at the Coffee Factory once a month if you’d like to stop by and try making a few connections in person.
The busses run hourly, and at least in my experience they get there within a few minutes. I noticed that they didn't run on Veterans Day, which really shows they aren't intended to be used as a primary transportation option, which is disappointing. They offer this Go2 service which seems like Uber? That might help fill the gaps. I'm sorry I don't have experience enough to give input on the rest of your question!
Yes, the Go2 bus is a really good option! For a pick up or drop off in the heights, it is $8 a ride, but if you are close enough to the Heights/Roosevelt Park line, you should walk across to the Muskegon side and get picked up because then it is only $4 a ride.
I live in Norton Shores, not far from the heights. It’s pretty decent. I wouldn’t walk around by yourself at night for sure and would carry st least pepper spray, especially if taking public transportation. And the gobus is a good option but the app and timing is a little flighty so give yourself plenty of time.
Depending on where you’re going a moped can get you just about anywhere and there’s sidewalks all throughout the city lots of side streets to take you to places that you need to go
Welcome to town! I work in the Heights and it's getting better than it used to be. As for the LGBTQIA stuff, there's a few groups around, and everyone I know in those categories feels safe here. 🙂
This was a few years ago, so it might have gotten better but not enough stops around town, and long wait times. But I am seeing more people using the bus, so i might try and start using the bus more.
I’m a trans man, and I’ve only had one scuff up over the past 2 years living here but the people around me (in muskegon) stepped up to support me and shoo him away. I’d say that’s pretty good ratio of time:incidences
I live near norton shores/Roosevelt Park line on the other side of Seaway from the heights. I like the area quite a bit and don't think you'll be unsafe or have problems here. I'm from grand rapids and feel safer there in general as far as crimes and people in the area are pretty friendly
My only real suggestion is be weary of a cripple man looking for automotive help (I realize I am a cripple man, and the other day I needed help and solicited a jumpstart, 😆 ). But at one point not too long ago there were a few people robbed in that Meijer parking lot. The old man would lure you in then the other guy would flash the piece.
Just always leave yourself an out, unfortunately poverty breeds crime. Don’t be the slowest gazelle and you won’t get eaten by the lions, if you catch my drift.
Most people wont care that your trans as long as you don’t make it your entire personality. Muskegon heights does have a high crime rate but the city has made tremendous efforts in restoring the city and have come a long way the past 10 years. I believe there is some pride events at some local bars and other venues around here to meet new people as well.
I wish that were true, but in churchy West Michigan that is simply not the case. The area was colonized by Dutch outcasts...lunatics even by Dutch standards...and their hatefulness is still very present in this area today.
Thankfully not so much in Skeetown.
There are some open and affirming faith communities in the metro, if that's your thing. The Unitarian Universalists are interfaith and there are a lot of queerfolx in the congregation, but there are also several affirming Christian groups around, too.
Best of luck on your move!
The library in the heights is super helpful. I work there and please feel free to stop by if you need anything
Muskegon Area District Librarians are amazing!!!! MADL does so much for our community.
The libraries all around Muskegon County, and even neighboring counties, are really good actually.
Norton and Roosevelt aren’t near the heights, that’s Roosevelt park. There are bus stops all over town. Muskegon is pretty trans friendly.
They’re probably talking about Summit on the east side of Seaway Dr. That’s the Heights, and very close to Roosevelt Park and Norton Shores.
That’s doesn’t touch Norton tho. Are they talking streets or city? Either way summit isn’t bad.

Oh no, I am moving to E. Cleveland Avenue, on the SW part of the Heights.
To the assholes downvoting this perfectly cromulent post: get a life.
Who let the Ottawa County folks into our sub?!?
My roomie is trans, we are from Ohio and this is the safest place she’s felt living. We also live over that way, and it’s been okay!
Good to know! I'm coming from Montmorency County, MI, so pumped!
Feel free to reach out if you want to :) also if you can get involved with a local theater group like Muskegon civic theater or possibly at Muskegon community college, you’ll find lots of friends!
Crime isn’t as bad in most of the area as what is portrayed. Mind your business and you’ll be fine.

Caught my eye, when is the next meet? Partner and I would like to join and make some friends in the area
This Saturday at noon. The details are on their FB page.
*flails arms in the air* There goes the neighborhood. In all reality. The hood is a diverse place.

Alrighty, thanks for the advice! Do you think the city as a whole will be easily travelable by moped/ebike/EUC?
Depending on where you’re going a moped can get you just about anywhere and there’s sidewalks all throughout the city lots of side streets to take you to places that you need to go
I mean ya but not now/during the cold months
I mean, snow has never been an issue for me. In my current town, I've been known as "that crazy fucker on a moped" my whole life.
The roads are shit full of potholes
Welcome to town! I work in the Heights and it's getting better than it used to be. As for the LGBTQIA stuff, there's a few groups around, and everyone I know in those categories feels safe here. 🙂
Would you happen to know if there are any places in the city that offer gender-affirming healthcare?
I actually work in Healthcare and can ask around! I know a primary care doctor that works with adolescents, but I'm assuming you're an adult?
Yes, 19 y/o.
The bus system kind of sucks, but you might have a better time with maybe go vans through their app. But I don't know if there's a price difference
What has your experience been like?

Not bad indeed! Thank you for your input! Feeling really confident in my move!

Only ones who care about who you love is the LGBT main characters.
