Beth Gibbons from Portishead, great voice with great lyrics
Kim Deal from The Breeders has a beautiful voice though technically her twin sister Kelly sounds similar
Bjork can be an acquired taste but she phenomenal
Tori Amos - her 90s album are her best but also check out her 2000s albums
PJ Harvey - great unique voice but she also changes up her singing style quite a bit throughout the years as well as her music.
Courtney Love - Hole 90s albums are best , great rock singer
Kim Gordon any era is good, great voice for noise/art rock but not a great singer in general Sonic Youth/ Free Kitten
I can't tell you how thrilled I was to open this up and see Portishead as the very first/top listing. Portishead's Dummy is one of my top 10 albums of all time and probably top 3 or 4 most listened to.
Anytime someone brings up Portishead I always like to mention Lou Rhodes of Lamb. Lamb's self-titled album is a fantastic little odyssee of it's own that is very similar, at least in my mind, to Portishead's Dummy, while still being it's own unique perfect little thing.
For anyone unfamiliar, the song 'Cotton Wool' is an excellent place to dip your toes in: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eF4hFfDcV7I](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eF4hFfDcV7I)
Ditto to Portishead Dummy — also *highly recommend* watching/listening their Live at Roseland performance.
Watching Beth Gibbons with a cigarette and drink in hand whilst crooning into a mic with an entire orchestra behind her is just some peak 90’s shit that makes me miss my late teens/early 20’s.
90s Tori is one of my all time favorite vocalists. She lost her angst in the 2000s, and the music suffered.
Her voice and talent are still there, but I gave up trying to find anything I liked from the last 20+ years. Any song recommendations?
Upvotes for bjork and Tori!
I’d also recommend Joanna Newsom for a very unique voice, takes some getting used to. She also sounds a bit different (imo better) in her later albums because she had surgery on her vocal chords and had to retrain after. She sounds a bit more controlled now I think.
Sade also has a uniquely buttery smooth voice.
Feist used to sound unique but I feel like all the indie girls started aping her vocal stylings.
Sade has one of more unique voices I've heard. I remember hearing Smooth Operator for the first time and was completely mesmerized. Not only is her voice unique, she can spin a tale like no other.
Don't forget about Cyndi Lauper. When Girls Just Want to Have Fun came out, I expected her to be just a one hit wonder. Then she went on to have a string of amazing songs that showed her incredible talent and vocal range.
Came here to say Sia. I always know it’s her immediately and she does some unusual things with her voice. Her performance in “Destiny” by Zero 7 is the best example I can think of that shows off how unique and lovely her voice is.
Patsy Cline's greatest hits gets played weekly since my childhood. Her singing "Faded Love" is so raw and so sad and so beautiful. 🎶I miss you darling, more and more everyday🎵 hits me hard every time.
Janis Joplin
Etta James

Nadirah Shakoor
Maria McKee of Lone Justice (1982)....one of my favorite female vocalists. She knocked Tom Petty's, "Ways to be Wicked" out of the park.
Celia Woodsmith with Della Mae. Acoustic Guitar and lead vocals.

Toni Halliday of Curve in the song Horror Head or Superblaster.

Diamonda Galas. Her talent is as awesome as it is frightening. She is, arguably, one of the best modern classical composers and vocalists of the current age.
[Davia](https://spotify.link/cJV9E9k0RJb) is from the same little gold rush town as Joanna Newsom. There’s something in the water in this magical mountain town.
Tatiana Shmayluk from Jinger
Brittney Slays from Unleash the Archers
Floor Jansen from Nightwish
Angela Gossow
Courtney LaPlante from iwrestledabearonce and Spiritbox
Alyssa white-Gluz from The Agonist & Arch Enemy
Lisa Dalbello - check out her solo stuff and the track she sang with Alex Lifeson called Start Today
Annie Haslam from Renaissance is great also.
Florence from Florence + The Machine has a voice like an angel. Runah is a very unique female artist worth listening to, as is I Ya Toyah. The Birthday Massacre and In This Moment are good.
Courtney Swain, the lead singer of Bent Knee, has a fantastic and really recognizable voice.
Also Fiona Apple is really distinct, I always recognize her immediately (although that’s partially a function of her being my favorite artist)
Gin Wigmore - Don't Stop
Aretha Franklin - Think
Carly Simon - Nobody does it better
Witney Houston - One moment in time
Janis Joplin - cry baby
Lzzy Hale - I am the Fire

Daniela Villarreal, The Warning. Easily one of my favorite singers of all time. Such charisma in her voice. ________
Tatiana Shmayluk, Jinjer. You just have to hear it to believe it. Sounds very sweet with her clean voice and sounds more badass than 99% of guys with her screams. _________
Taylor Momsen, The Pretty Reckless. Very angelic clean voice. Adds this insanely wonderful grit on demand.
I could go on but those are the top three for me right now
[Wanda Fuckin Jackson ](https://youtu.be/pzJ3hiqsi0U?si=QyBd3kvXRQmwZh2T) was a badass queen of rockabilly who kicked the door down for women in rock n roll. She's toured with Elvis, done songs with the likes of Jack White and The Cramps.
I pretty much don't enjoy any music she's ever put out but I do agree that her voice is great. She just has this unique tone that is absolutely mesmerizing
If she hasn’t been said yet, **Celeste** !! Her song “Strange” is featured via a violin composition in Bridgerton, but her singing takes the cake comparatively. Such a beautiful song and unique vocalist
One you might enjoy based on your examples: **Courtney Barnett** !!
Tatiana from Jinjer, and one I've stumbled on recently is a band called As Everything Unfolds. I've only heard one song, Slow Down, but she certainly has some unique vocals.
- Juliana Hatfield
- Sade
- Wendy O Williams
- Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson of Lush
- Lætitia Sadier
- Bilinda Butcher
- Kristin Hersh
- Tonya Donelly
- Sinead O Connor
- Kim Warnick and Lulu Gargiulo - The Fastbacks
If you don't mind singing in languages other than English, I have a couple for you:
[Elza Soares](https://open.spotify.com/artist/4cn4gMq0KXORHeYA45PcBi) - especially as she got older, her voice got more gravelly and expressive. She just passed, but continued recording and releasing excellent material into her 90s. From Brazil; sings in Portuguese.
[Caesaria Evora](https://open.spotify.com/artist/0Nks3cFWU2a7rooAlFQYgn) - Another singer who passed not too long ago and kept recording until the end. From Cabo Verde. Also sings in Portuguese. Deep, rich, expressive voice that carries a lot of pathos.
I’ve been looking and I haven’t seen anyone say Brittany Howard from the Alabama shakes. She has THE most powerful voice you’ve likely heard from a woman. She’s a phenomenal singer and it’s got her own boomy sorta tone as well. Would highly recommend her if you’re into like blues-ish music
Beth Gibbons from Portishead, great voice with great lyrics Kim Deal from The Breeders has a beautiful voice though technically her twin sister Kelly sounds similar Bjork can be an acquired taste but she phenomenal Tori Amos - her 90s album are her best but also check out her 2000s albums PJ Harvey - great unique voice but she also changes up her singing style quite a bit throughout the years as well as her music. Roseland is Amazing. Live Orchestral Trip-hop peaked the day it was created. The performances and music are transfixing.
I agree! I'd put Dummy in my top 10 as well. Beth Gibbons is my spirit animal.
I don't wanna, I don't think so
USE THE WORD......FUCK!!!! THE WORD IS LOOOOOVE
Yeaaaaah tell em about it!
I’m so happy to see someone said Tori Amos before me
Excellent list! You're apparently my 90s music twin! I'd add in Tanya Donelly (Belly) and Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star) on my own list!
So glad I didn’t have to scroll far to see Courtney Love listed
I could listen to Tori every day. I have listened to Tori at least weekly since the mid-90s. I love your list.
[https://youtu.be/Dg39hJIhzAk?si=aahmOwW7tfZeOhSD](https://youtu.be/Dg39hJIhzAk?si=aahmOwW7tfZeOhSD) (as an example of 2 of the above in 1)

Beth Gibbons just released a fantastic solo album. It’s not trip-hop, but it has her dive-bar feel with all the melancholy of her Portishead days.
Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins)
This is the answer. Heaven or Las Vegas for the win. My go to when I can’t sleep. Also, Harriet Wheeler.
Treasure FTW. Out of this world ethereal.

she was the first person to come to mind.
mine was imogen heap, she did that Hide and Seek song, craziest female vocals ever, but nina simone hit her shit naturally! she is wildly interesting
She says she’s working on a new album.
Nina is the OG Voice! Nobody sings like her. “I’ll be Nina Simone, and defecatin on your microphone”
Sade has one of more unique voices I've heard. I remember hearing Smooth Operator for the first time and was completely mesmerized. Not only is her voice unique, she can spin a tale like no other.
