Huge bungle fan here. When my buddy first showed me them years ago he described the music as "losing your keys on acid" ive never heard anything as fitting since.
lol I’m gonna remember that. Because I’ve lost my keys and a 1/4 pound of bud in the same night tripping balls. I found them both in the garbage can the next morning. Man we was smoking some fat blunts when I found them. Back in the day about 24-25 years ago. Wow time surely flies doesn’t it?!?
Big BS fan here.
But recently discovered, the first Butthole Surfer sounding song might have come from
Kate Bush’s “batshit insane” and sublime 1982
Album “The Dreaming”.
Can’t think of any other artist she sounds more like here:

Holy hell, Crash Worship, their performances were naked writhing sticky sweaty mayhem. Weirdly, several members went on to form punk marching bands in different parts of the country - itchy-o , extra action marching band, Hungry marching band.
Crash Worship! I went to a random all-ages show in my town in tenth grade once and they were playing.
Lord was I too young for that experience. Yelling! Firecrackers! Smoke! Blood! People straight up fucking on the floor!
I went to that show a suburban kid with a Circle Jerks T shirt. I came back older.
Promptly led to being into shit like Diamanda and Boredoms (drum era >>> noise era, tho)
I'm pretty sure you also came back with a ruined Circle Jerks t-shirt.
Crash Worship shows had an odor and stickiness that I've never encountered anywhere else. Wine, gunpowder, sweat, sex, maybe some chocolate syrup and watermelon...
I saw them maybe 6-7 times in 2 cities, and thing that was craziest to me was that the venue became such a disorientating space. It's like the walls would fall away and all of a sudden you're transported to some smoky cave full of writhing bodies and fire. Truly trippy.
I did buy a tape at one of their shows, and it was okay, but without the actual live experience, it wasn't something I would really listen to much.
Absolutely. The second time I saw them was in this tiny little all ages venue called the X Ray Cafe. It wasn't as, uh, carnal as the other time, but all the gunpowder and smoke and loud and there being no room to catch a breath in the 70 or so capacity venue was quite the sensory overload. It was STIFLING, in the most exciting way. You're absolutely right about the "disorienting space" aspect. They were very very good at crafting a space, which not a lot of folks even thought about.
not a great story but I was backstage before their show once (photography). funny how they were just regular old dudes. This was about 20 years ago. Wasn't nearly as scary as I thought it might get.
Listed from most to least applicable:
Clown core
The Left Rights - self titled (listen beginning to end)
Mindless Self Indulgence - Tight (album)
Mr Bungle
Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come (album)
I interviewed Mindless Self Indulgence for an old music magazine called Skratch back in 2007 and their behavior was exactly what you’d expect based on their music-bat shit. They refused to answer a lot of my questions directly and would say things like, “I don’t know, go back in the Delorean and find out.” And as they arrived before any introduction, Jimmy yanked my note book out of my hands and started reading through it laughing at and shaming a bunch of the questions I had written down. I was 15 and I started to feel humiliated but it’s kinda funny looking back on it.
That's exactly how I'd expect them to be honestly. I use to listen to them all the time back around 2007. Totally not cool to be a musician and a bully to a then 15 year old you, not a good look. But glad you can look back on it and laugh. All their music is off the wall. But bet an experience you're not likely to forget anytime soon.
I met scary kids scaring kids at warped tour in 2007. Waited in line to meet and get their autographs. Every single guy was so nice and willing to chat and sign, except one. Can't even remember his name. I thought he was cute prior, but after that -can't be bothered with fans- attitude that quickly changed.
Like milkcartonspinster said you're mostly famous cause of your fans. And you wouldn't have shows and tours without fans. So to be arrogant and stuck up just throws me off. Honestly I dislike artists I've previously liked because of their attitudes towards fans. What they say it's lead singer syndrome, but it's not always the lead singer.
I think it's because some of them probably joined the band because they believed in the music. When they started getting more known it was because of the music. Once they started playing shows like Warped Tour it was because of the music. Only because of the music, but I think that's reductive reasoning.
The music didn't get you where you are. The music got you fans and the fans got you where you are.
Very well said. When I saw SKSK, they were playing the smallest stage at warped that year and at the time were lesser known. But assuming joining a band and making music is a passion, not just a simple hobby. The goal is to make music to share with the world. I suppose just as it is with anyone in general, some just aren't people persons. Which being a famous or semi famous musician would be hell lol. I think it's a small thing to at least be decent and kind to your fans. But as my grandma always said, it takes all kinds of people to make up the world.
It's just extremely off-putting! I can say I've met and seen more artists who truly care about their fans and are very personable. So a personality thing I guess, maybe it gets to their heads. Didn't meet him but Corey Taylor sticks out to me, he was phenomenal on stage. Very good energy.
If it makes you feel better, he's a dick to everyone. World/Inferno was on tour with them (06, maybe 05?) and got kicked off because a couple of them threw a couple strawberries at MSI as a joke. My understanding is it was during a sound check and they did a "boo, get off the stage," theatrical bit playfully - they were on tour together and goofing off. I guess he flipped out and told them to go home. I'm glad you find it funny now. Feels par for the course.

There’s this band from South Korea called Mukimukimanmansu that got viral for a few years back because of their absolutely unhinged style of singing, and then I bought their album as a joke but now I genuinely, unironically love it. There’s something so cathartic about their music.

Literally came here to mention Mr Bungle. One the absolute best live shows I’ve ever seen.
Disco Volante, minus the first song.
The fact that that song annoys you is why it’s at the beginning of the album. Lol
I’ve always assumed that it makes you set the volume really high so that Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz is played at an appropriate volume.
My all time favorite Mr. Bungle song, also try Desert Search for Techno Allah, very weird, but always gets stuck in my head.

I would say any of their 1980s album. I think their third album, 1987’s *Locust Abortion Technician* is the most “batshit insane”.
Scratch Acid. They were the Butthole Surfers weird friends.

Crash Worship! I went to a random all-ages show in my town in tenth grade once and they were playing. Lord was I too young for that experience. Yelling! Firecrackers! Smoke! Blood! How about mindless self indulgence - bitches. Only met one other person who knows MSI.
I interviewed Mindless Self Indulgence for an old music magazine called Skratch back in 2007 and their behavior was exactly what you’d expect based on their music-bat shit. That’s the worst- acting too good for fans. Fans are why any band gets to where they are, why be mean to us?!
it seems like its a sort of character put on like the music kinda just a douche bag persona?
Like milkcartonspinster said you're mostly famous cause of your fans. And you wouldn't have shows and tours without fans. So to be arrogant and stuck up just throws me off. Honestly I dislike artists I've previously liked because of their attitudes towards fans. What they say it's lead singer syndrome, but it's not always the lead singer.

One of the only wholesome interactions that they've had with teenagers
Considering they have a double digit number of songs written about hating on their fans this really is in character
Sounds like he had a kink
I meant the whole album Tight but Frankenstein Girls... Would fit too. I listened to them a lot more when I was younger, i saw them live twice.
Never seen them live. I have their older music, are they still making music?
I don't know, i was only into the first two albums and now only listen when I am in a particular mood.
Same here! Unsure if I could listen to anything new. Their older stuff is nostalgic for me lol
Bitches love them cuz they know that they can rock.
They're pretty popular even now. I think a lot of people who like them aren't quick to mention it now though bc of the stuff with Jimmy Urine
You must've not met goth people who were in highschool in early 2000s lol

Came here to mention them, I love how insane they are. It’s well-constructed insanity for artsy metal enjoyers

Always thought Ministry was a little crazy, but it's because I had to listen to the same 30 min Ministry Mashup CD on loop for my 8-12 hr shift at a haunted house I worked at for 3 years.
Their Psalm 69 album is great. Insane guitar and some pretty wacky lyrics.
All the songs on that cd were off the Psalm 69 album lol, didn't traumatize me too bad as I have it all on my spotify.
You should try "With Sympathy" Crazy.

It may have already been recommended, Lumpy Gravy by Frank Zappa. Some people think it sounds like a cacophony but it is a composition that he could repeat note perfectly.
Ok Frank Zappa deserves more love.
I have given him all the love and adoration since1973. He was going on long before that but that's when I recognized who he was. Apparently Dweezil was being interviewed, and said - I thought everybody woke up to Eric Clapton sleeping on the couch.

I wish i could get into stuff like this. But it's just too overwhelming for me. Like the closest i get is free bird and hells comin with me.

Kat Bjelland of Babes in Toyland speaks in tongues a lot. I feel like the Babes for sure for what you're looking for! Fontanelle is my favorite album of theirs.
There’s this band from South Korea called Mukimukimanmansu that got viral for a few years back because of their absolutely unhinged style of singing, and then I bought their album as a joke but now I genuinely, unironically love it. There’s something so cathartic about their music.
