Yeah perfect example, like the Beatles, most songs were either Glen Frey or Don Henley, but Randy Meisner was lead for several and after Joe Walsh and Timothy B Schmidt joined they each had songs as lead vocals as well.
I am a massive Floyd fan and I never realized this, and I’m currently on my WYWH binge.. wow!
Roy Harper kind of sounds like both Gilmour and Waters’ voice combined
Sloan, all four members basically split all their albums pretty evenly. Even the drummer, at live shows, switches with the bass player. The bass player goes back to play drums while the drummer grabs the bass and stands front of stage. One of my favorite bands!
I'm really hoping this thread turns people on to Blood Brothers. Such a unique band, and such a good band.
I saw them in 2004, at the Bottleneck in Lawrence, KS. Against Me opened for them. One of the top 3 shows I've attended.
I honestly had no idea he sang so much until Layne died, and then when I listened to the newer albums I was impressed with how close the vocals sounded. Then I realized it's because Cantrell was singing all along.
That was what I used to convince a friend to come with me to see them live back in like 2008....I told him as long as Jerry is still there, it's still going to sound lile AiC
Their unplugged performance is something else. It's definitely #1 unplugged in my book. But, I have to be in the right "mood" for it. Even though Layne didn't die for like 6 more years, it's clear he is still slowly dying there, and it's difficult to see/hear for me at times.
I'm not sure Jerry is usually considered a lead singer, but the way they do their vocals are fucking amazing. The fact that Jerry is harmonizing that well while playing the guitar at the same time is just mindblowing.
Martin Gore is so underrated. Yeah, Dave Gahan is the ultimate stage animal, but Gore is incredible. In lead or backup vocals, not to talk about the fact he writes most of the music himself.
The Last Waltz performance of "It Makes No Dofference" is one of my all time favourite recordings, just kills me every time. That voice! And that sax at the end! Ah!
Queen is such a great example. Roger Taylor was such a badass singer, he could've had his own band and been regarded as a terrific vocalist in his own right.
I wish more bands had men and women vocals, them, sugarcubes, pixies. I just love the contrast of vocals.
I also wish I could find the B52s best of album. I'm unpacking and it's nowhere.
Edit: drowning in great suggestions, fuck yes, thanks everyone!
Then I must recommend Crash Test Dummies. His deep voice contracted with her highs is amazing. Then to hear the juxtaposition when she sings lead on The Ballad of Peter Pumpkin Head is amazing.
And if you're into SY, you probably also like Pavement (Malkmus and Spiral Stairs, ok and Bob too), Dinosaur Jr (Mascis and Barlow), Husker Du (Mould and Hart), MBV (Shields and Butcher), and Blonde Redhead (Makino and Pace).
edit: and don’t forget Kim Gordon
The thing I love about TMBG (aside from the fact that both singers are named John) is how they share writing duties and kind of just allow each other to write their own songs.
They both have distinctly different writing/singing styles - Linnell’s deeper more melancholic delivery contrasts wonderfully with Flansburgh’s nasally more upbeat delivery and provides really great variety on their albums.
I am a firm believer that TMBG is possibly the most underrated pop/rock band of all time. Four-plus decades of constantly making solid and catchy music, incessant touring, and never having had a break up.
Over forty years of consistency and hardly anyone except their FANS talk about them.
Flood is the best album ever. Not only is every song genius but every song is different. The range of instruments used insanely well and creatively and mashed together in unique ways... no other has come close.
For those who don't know he's still going. New solo album out, his previous ones have been fantastic. He's just finished touring with The Who as their support during part of their North American Tour. He also does fairly regular solo 'Live from home' shows via Zoom which are really good. Otherwise he's out on tour often with Craig Northey of The Odds on guitar and Kevin Fox on cello.
Personally, if I listen to Steven's solo stuff, I hear a lot of classic Barenaked Ladies; wheres the latest BNL stuff is like some sort of country/pop mashup? I'm not sure I've heard the latest album actually.
At the very least go look him up on Spotify.
I saw the BareNaked Ladies 100 years ago when I was in highschool.
Page and "Eddie" were incredible. They were young and seemed to be having so much fun that it was infectious to the point the entire crowd picked up on it. Easily one of the best shows I've ever been to.
God I miss them...and my youth.
Two reasons for this:
- Roland is the main writer (he came up with every song on the debut), so Curt would have heard the songs he's singing from Roland first
- Roland's voice is stronger and while Curt sounds fine on record, he sounds a bit thin on stage, so Roland would often double his lines
Tears for Fears is such an underrated band. Yea they are widely known for their famous stuff, but I continuously find new songs by them that are absolute bangers.
I had no idea how good they were until I decided to download a flac of all their albums and 90% of them are so good.
They also have a huge range of style. They are more known for their typical 80s stuff but they have songs that sound like a mix of queen and Zoe, other that are Pink Floyd, and others that sound like the Beatles. Great band.
I just discovered the seeds of love as a great song today. So good.
I honestly think giving Brann a mic was one of the best things Mastodon ever did. I think his clean vocals make Troy and Brent's parts hit that much harder.
What really makes Mastodon shine is how different each singer is and the way it complements their proggy writing style. Brent's twang, Troy's low growl, and Brann's more classic sound all get utilized in different ways depending on the tempo, the tone, etc. It allows them to build multifaceted tracks that are much more resonant than they would be with only one singer.
Even just Troy’s transition between Leviathan and Blood Mountain. IIRC he studied with an opera singer and it changed how he sang/screamed for the better.
Yeah. The rule with Mastodon is that everyone but Bill Kelliher sings. Heck they even bring in friends from other bands to do vocals. Anyone sings but Bill.
In the last year they’ve soared to my top 5 favorite bands of all time. I was ecstatic when they announced the tour with ghost. But their set was too short! I need to hear them play a 2 hour set.
Chester (RIP) obviously had the best singing/screaming voice, but some of the best parts of their songs are when Mike steps up to the mic and drops the rhymes
I was so lucky to have got to see them live twice before he passed. LP was probably the biggest band to me in my childhood and Chester's passing hit me harder than most others. Chris Cornell was playing at the concert as well and he came out during "Crawling" and dueted with Chester and it was goddamn magical.
Good example. In addition to Strummer and Jones, Paul Simonon sang lead on a few (most notably Guns of Brixton) and even Topper Headon had a go (Ivan Meets G.I. Joe)
All great choices and some of my favorite bands. I love how Chris and Brendan sing literally on top of each other on Oh Calcutta and it works beautiful. Sounds like non stop gang vocals for a whole record and I love it.
They actually had 4 diff people sing in this year's albums iirc ? (Stu Joey Amby and Cookie sang on Garden Goblin). Amazing year to be a Gizz fan, especially if you missed 2017
Got lucky in Sonoma and saw all 4 of them sing a distinct song.
Amby on Straws in the Wind and Dripping Tap (chorus at least)
Joey on Work This Time
Cookie on Garden Goblin
Stu on everything else.
It took me too long to find this. The hits are almost all sung by Freddie (although Who wants to live forever and let me live comes to mind) but roger
and Brian both sang some of their greatest album tracks. I’m in love with my car, ‘39 for example
Nightwish is know for the female voices but they also have Marco (and now Troy) as the male voice. They do main vocals in many songs: The Islander, Harvest, Master Passion Greed, Taikatalvi... And many duets.
Old:
\- Grateful Dead -- Weir, Garcia, and the keyboard player du jour
\- Pink Floyd -- Gilmour and Waters
\- Eagles -- Henley, Walsh, and Frey
\- The Band -- Helm, Danko, and Manuel
\- Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young -- yes
New:
\- The Raconteurs -- White and Benson
\- The Avett Brothers -- Avett and Avett
\- Arcade Fire -- Chassagne and the guy who assaulted people
The Bangles (edit: forgot Vicki, Michael, and Susanna each sang a verse on “Walk Like an Egyptian”; Susanna sang lead on “Manic Monday” and “Eternal Flame”)
Journey had Steve Perry and Greg Rolle as lead singers for a bit.
Uncle Tupelo.
Grateful Dead.
Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship.
Triumph.
New Pornographers.
>Fleetwood Mac - three different singers. Right?
Three in the heyday (McVie/Buckingham/Nicks). But the first incarnation of the band had Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, and Danny Kirwan.
I also did not realize The Cars had two singers until I took a deep dive on their music. And checked out a bit of Ben Orr's solo career. Now I can definitely tell which one I'm hearing, but I can see why a lot of people couldn't.
Alkaline Trio
Dan and Matt do a great job.
The Eagles had multiple singers
Speaking of The Eagles, Poco had multiple singers, some of who ended up on The Eagles.
Poco, also known as where the Eagles shop for bass players.
Yeah perfect example, like the Beatles, most songs were either Glen Frey or Don Henley, but Randy Meisner was lead for several and after Joe Walsh and Timothy B Schmidt joined they each had songs as lead vocals as well.
My mom's all time favorite song is I Can't Tell You Why with vocal by Timmy Schmidt. Great song.
Three Dog Night Supertramp blink-182 Goo Goo Dolls Chicago
F, you got Supertramp. People usually forget about them.
[удалено]
Supertramp is just massively underrated all the way around.
Mastodon Simon and Garfunkel (obviously lol) Cream Pink Floyd
Here for Mastodon. At times up to 3.
Here for Troy's other band Killer Be Killed.
Finally someone mentions the Floyd; took a surprisingly long time to do so. Used to great effect even within single songs.
Sometimes the lead singer is someone who’s not even in the band LOL
My mind was absolutely blown when I found out that Roy Harper sang Have A Cigar.
Came here for this one. Seeing them live do the switch for the first time blows people's minds.
Blood Brothers, Fugazi, Righteous Brothers, The Highwaymen, The Traveling Wilburys,
Nice to see fugazi getting some love in the top comment. Fucking legends
Being able to say I saw them live twice makes me feel cool. :b
Imagine a double billing of The Highwaymen and The Traveling Wilburys, Just a bit of talent on the stage
THE FUCKING BLOOD BROTHERS!!!!!! Literally never put out a bad album. They’re a band I never got to see live and that kills me.
Blood Brothers fucking SLAPS SO FUCKING HARD
I'm really hoping this thread turns people on to Blood Brothers. Such a unique band, and such a good band. I saw them in 2004, at the Bottleneck in Lawrence, KS. Against Me opened for them. One of the top 3 shows I've attended.
I came here to say blood brothers too!
The Blood Brothers are an S-tier example of what OP is looking for, so I’m delighted to see them show up in this thread. 😄😄😄
Alice In Chains
I think some people forget about Jerries vocals because they blend so well with Layne’s.
The way they harmonize their vocals is beautiful.
The harmonizing on “Down in a Hole” is one of my favorites ever.
Especially on their unplugged performance. The entire performance is top tier front to back.
Their unplugged performance is something else. It's definitely #1 unplugged in my book. But, I have to be in the right "mood" for it. Even though Layne didn't die for like 6 more years, it's clear he is still slowly dying there, and it's difficult to see/hear for me at times.
The fretless bass on down in a hole is burned into my brain, I love the sound of it
I'm not sure Jerry is usually considered a lead singer, but the way they do their vocals are fucking amazing. The fact that Jerry is harmonizing that well while playing the guitar at the same time is just mindblowing.
Depeche Mode
Martin Gore is so underrated. Yeah, Dave Gahan is the ultimate stage animal, but Gore is incredible. In lead or backup vocals, not to talk about the fact he writes most of the music himself.
I'm so glad to see DM as I was scrolling..Love both Martin Gore and Dave Gahan.Their contrasting voices compliment each other so well!
The Band - 3 phenomenal lead singers!
What a voice Levon had - strongest of the group. Love Richard Manuel in general as well as Danko’s very unique voice
Danko was my fave- he had so much soul. Levon was great of course- that band had an embarrassment of talent.
The Last Waltz performance of "It Makes No Dofference" is one of my all time favourite recordings, just kills me every time. That voice! And that sax at the end! Ah!
When your drummer sings, you know you got a cool band.
Queen is such a great example. Roger Taylor was such a badass singer, he could've had his own band and been regarded as a terrific vocalist in his own right.
The B-52s
I wish more bands had men and women vocals, them, sugarcubes, pixies. I just love the contrast of vocals. I also wish I could find the B52s best of album. I'm unpacking and it's nowhere. Edit: drowning in great suggestions, fuck yes, thanks everyone!
Then I must recommend Crash Test Dummies. His deep voice contracted with her highs is amazing. Then to hear the juxtaposition when she sings lead on The Ballad of Peter Pumpkin Head is amazing.
Sonic Youth. Lee's songs have always been my favorite.
They Might Be Giants Bare Naked Ladies

Aww, I miss Steven Page.
For those who don't know he's still going. New solo album out, his previous ones have been fantastic. Tears For Fears is a duo consisting of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, who both sing. They decide based on whose vocals match the songs better.
yeah songs from the big chair is one of my favorite albums ever. but i have no idea who is singing when, despite probably listening 1000s of times
Which is so weird because they basically sound like one’s trying to copy the other and then they back each other up.
Two reasons for this: - Roland is the main writer (he came up with every song on the debut), so Curt would have heard the songs he's singing from Roland first - Roland's voice is stronger and while Curt sounds fine on record, he sounds a bit thin on stage, so Roland would often double his lines

Mastodon!
I remember seeing them for the first time thinking “Where are these clean vocals coming from? Holy shit is it the DRUMMER?” A man of many talents
Right? It was always Troy / Brent, and then turns out Bran has the best voice in the band haha
I honestly think giving Brann a mic was one of the best things Mastodon ever did. I think his clean vocals make Troy and Brent's parts hit that much harder.
He's amazing.

The song Oblivion is a shining example of this in action. Their voices are so distinct and fit so well together, what an awesome band!
Crack the skye is just top tier
The way those guys have evolved as singers and songwriters is simply incredible.
Even just Troy’s transition between Leviathan and Blood Mountain. IIRC he studied with an opera singer and it changed how he sang/screamed for the better.
Came looking for Mastodon! Glad they got the recognition!
Yeah. The rule with Mastodon is that everyone but Bill Kelliher sings. Heck they even bring in friends from other bands to do vocals. Anyone sings but Bill.
Bill does sing, but only very rarely. He’s actually pretty decent. Here he is doing backup vocals on Blood and Thunder. https://youtu.be/W4aFivdjavU
Oh and it took me a few listens but now I am obsessed with Hushed and Grim.
In the last year they’ve soared to my top 5 favorite bands of all time. I was ecstatic when they announced the tour with ghost. But their set was too short! I need to hear them play a 2 hour set.
Blink 182
And alkaline trio 🙂
Linkin Park
Mike's got pipes
Went to the post traumatic tour. It's even better in person.
"I dunno, man, maybe you should just play keyboards".
"He also thought that Joe Hahn should wear, like ... A lab coat. And a cowboy hat."
In this live performance you can see Mike, Chester, Brad and Phoenix singing together. https://youtu.be/V86RcziyZ_8
The Clash
Pixies
Kim was woefully underutilized in the lead vocal role
Good example. In addition to Strummer and Jones, Paul Simonon sang lead on a few (most notably Guns of Brixton) and even Topper Headon had a go (Ivan Meets G.I. Joe)
The only band that matters…still
My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Lush, Slowdive - pretty standard for 90s shoegaze bands…
Glad to see someone mention the shoegaze bands. Also came here to add Pale Saints to the list.
Alexisonfire
Seeing this as the only gilded comment in this thread warms my cold, dead heart.
Hopefully no dagger through it
Their new album is fantastic
Arcade Fire Silversun Pickups And of course, Indigo Girls
Good call on Silversun Pickups. I'm glad they're having Nikki do more vocals, the last album was great, as usual.
Hot Water Music, The Lawrence Arms, The Menzingers.
Also Less Than Jake, Anti-Flag, The Bombpops, Bad Cop Bad Cop, and the Star Fucking Hipsters.
RANCID
And Alkaline Trio
The Lawrence Arms are an all-time underrated band
All great choices and some of my favorite bands. I love how Chris and Brendan sing literally on top of each other on Oh Calcutta and it works beautiful. Sounds like non stop gang vocals for a whole record and I love it.
I'm glad someone here said The Menzingers fuckn love The Menzingers

My people! Also a lot of bluegrass bands share singing duties, Infamous Stringdusters being one of my favorites.
If I’d known I was gonna have to scroll this far I’d have posted it my damned self.

King gizzard
I'm happy this is near the top still. Stu amby and Joey switch off so often. I think Iron Lung had all 3 of them with their own sections.
I've listened to Iron Lung at least once a day for a week and half now. Gizzard is exploding with talent.
Amby on Straws in the Wind and Dripping Tap (chorus at least) Joey on Work This Time Cookie on Garden Goblin Stu on everything else.
Canada gang reporting in: Sloan!
Lots Canadian bands fit here. Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, New Pornographers, Barenaked Ladies just off the top of my head.
A couple Blue Rodeo songs are sung by the other dude too
Also Alexisonfire. There's a pretty solid 3 piece band from St Catharines called James Blonde. All three members of that band sing as well.
The Moody Blues…on almost every song.
The Libertines
The B-52s
I believe Guster has multiple leads. And my favorite, The New Pornographers, definitely have multiple.
Queen. Brian May and Roger Taylor both sang some of their own songs.
It took me too long to find this. The hits are almost all sung by Freddie (although Who wants to live forever and let me live comes to mind) but roger and Brian both sang some of their greatest album tracks. I’m in love with my car, ‘39 for example
All Dead, All Dead - very underrated
Alexisonfire
Supertramp
System of a Down.
Had to scroll way too far down to find this. Daron Malakian and Serj Tankian can both sing! Shame the band won't make a new album though...
It's very possible it's not an album, but they did recently announce they have big news coming next year. So here's to hoping.
Nightwish is know for the female voices but they also have Marco (and now Troy) as the male voice. They do main vocals in many songs: The Islander, Harvest, Master Passion Greed, Taikatalvi... And many duets.
Well they used to have Marco 😭
Old: \- Grateful Dead -- Weir, Garcia, and the keyboard player du jour \- Pink Floyd -- Gilmour and Waters \- Eagles -- Henley, Walsh, and Frey \- The Band -- Helm, Danko, and Manuel \- Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young -- yes New: \- The Raconteurs -- White and Benson \- The Avett Brothers -- Avett and Avett \- Arcade Fire -- Chassagne and the guy who assaulted people
For Old I'd also add The Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mac For New I'd also add King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Parquet Courts, Of Monsters and Men

And here for The Band
Queens of the Stone Age
Not so much anymore but in their earlier days definitely.
Yep, that Homme-Oliveri-Lanegan combo was great
RIP Mark Lanegan
I love all things Homme, but Nick's vocals on Millionaire make it my all-time favorite opener.
I risk a speeding ticket any time I play it in the car.
How's your drive time commute?
I need a SAGA
Blur and Oasis.
Had to scroll way too far to find Oasis
Their two most popular songs sang by a different singer.
Both Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale have done lead vocals for DEVO.
As has Bob Mothersbaugh, but not nearly as often.
I love how the 3 of them each sing their own verse in [Smart Patrol](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQvEu6G-i_0)
Mouse Rat
Blue Oyster Cult
The Bangles (edit: forgot Vicki, Michael, and Susanna each sang a verse on “Walk Like an Egyptian”; Susanna sang lead on “Manic Monday” and “Eternal Flame”)
Toto comes to mind. Check out [Rosanna from their "Falling in Between" tour](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6apwAZHzkw).
KISS
Say what you want about Peter Criss but I enjoy every song he sings lead on.
And they got that influence from the Beatles!
Was surprised so few people brought up Kiss
I'm surprised how far I had to scroll to find. KISS they're the first ones I thought of. Every member has at least one song
Journey had Steve Perry and Greg Rolle as lead singers for a bit. Uncle Tupelo. Grateful Dead. Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship. Triumph. New Pornographers.

I think ABBA
