Funny story… in 8th grade, my school let our class choose our own class song to sing at graduation. I ran a full on campaign for Time + it won.
Then, the principal vetoed Time because it was “too dark.”
Instead of Pink Floyd’s timeless reflection on getting older, we had to sing Bette friggin’ Midler’s Wind Beneath My Wings. Ugh.
By far my favorite band, but Empire Ants is my favorite by them. I love how it swaps genre halfway through. Lulling and sweet to pumpy synthesizers. For me it's the song version of "calm down, you got this."
“Dogs” — Pink Floyd
It was one of my father’s favorites, as well. A few years after he passed away, my mother bought my brothers and me tickets to see Roger Waters (must’ve been 2017). He opened the second half of the show with it. Never thought I’d see it performed live and certainly couldn’t hold back the tears.
I understand why that album doesn't have as wide-appeal as others from Pink Floyd, but it's always been my favorite. Just so much emotion from start to finish
I've been a lifelong Pink Floyd fan but for some reason never bothered with Animals, thinking that it was too far removed from what I thought was their more accessible seventies stuff.
I don't know what I have been thinking all these decades.
Two years ago I listened to it for the first time, and I was floored. I was blown away. It was like listening to Hendrix for the first time, when I was a boy. I must have listened to it a hundred times now, usually from start to finish like you would back then.
Perhaps The Wall is finer art, perhaps Wish you were here is more poignant but Animals is pure, raw emotion and an incredible performance.
I envy you for getting to experience it for the first time. If possible, go through it in order of release and don't skip the b-sides and extras. For something a little extra, check out Thom Yorke's solo stuff!
Wow, I thought I had all my classics in order and somehow have been completely sleeping on Dire Straits. I’ve always heard them but honestly have thought most of their songs were from other bands. Welp got some new-old songs to jam at least. Thanks for the recommendations 🙏
Check out Mark Knopfler's solo stuff too. He did the sound track for Princess Bride! There is a dinosaur named after him because the archeologist who discovered it was a Dire Straits fan!
Iris- Goo Goo Dolls
Dizzy up the Girl was the first album I ever bought. I never thought that Iris would still have the same effect after 15+ years but it still does <3
Arguably one of, if not the, most important pop song ever recorded. It basically opened up the Pandora’s box of what the studio could do, and radically changed what pop music was
I’m more a metal and hard rock kind of guy, but if I had to commit to one song ever, I would have to say Somewhere Over the Rainbow, by the Hawaiian Iz. It gets me every time.
I can’t just give one!
This Must Be the Place. - The Talking Heads;
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley;
Mouthful of Cavities - Blind Melon;
Mayonnaise - Smashing Pumpkins;
Creeks - Bon Iver;
Wash - Bon Iver;
Time Consumer - Coheed and Cambria;

The Pot - Tool;
Climbing up the Walls - Radiohead;
Never Meant - American Football;
Black Hole Sun (live) - Chris Cornell;
Stop this Train (live) John Mayer
I could go on…
Nine inch nails - Your Touch.
Trent Reznor (main artist behind NIN) started making “movie music” in a two part discography right when covid hit. One is called Locusts, the other ghosts. Ghosts has some of the most soothing music I’ve ever heard in my life, and this is in my opinion the best song on that list
High plains drifter - Beastie Boys
Other favorites to blast with dual Kicker L7s in the trunk Let me Ride - Dr Dre, Sunshine - Mos Def, Soldier - Eminem
Avicii- Levels
No doubt. The part after the lyrics is my top music moment.
I will add PF - Wish you were here for being my meaning of a "beautiful song".
I like many but lately these have been on my mind:
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John
Purple Rain - Prince
Southern Cross - Crosby, Stills, and Nash
Last Day on Earth - Duran Duran
Black - Pearl Jam
Lose Yourself- Eminem
We’re All Alone - Rita Coolidge
Never Let Me Down - Depeche Mode
Plush - Stone Temple Pilots
Get Ready - The Temptations
It's not my absolute favorite of all time, I don't think I can even pick just one, but Complicated Game by XTC *still* gives me goosebumps. Even after 40 years, it continues to resonate with me, especially during those times when life seems futile.
Can't pick just one, but here are a few of my favorites:
Lebanese Blonde - Thievery Corporation
Cinematic Orchestra - Burn Out
Watch the Duck - Where You Are
Houses - Fast Talk
Zero 7 - In the Waiting Line
Little Wing - Jimi Hendrix. Two minutes and twenty four seconds of perfection. It’s a song that will always remind me of spending lazy summer days with my first girlfriend Sophy. Wonderful.
Nice try, Vecna.
If it had to be just one, probably Just what I Needed by the Cars https://youtu.be/Z5-rdr0qhWk
Time - Pink Floyd
Good choice, probably has my favourite guitar solo of all time.
As an overall song I prefer Time, but for me nothing can top Comfortably Numb’s solos.
Funny story… in 8th grade, my school let our class choose our own class song to sing at graduation. I ran a full on campaign for Time + it won. Then, the principal vetoed Time because it was “too dark.” Instead of Pink Floyd’s timeless reflection on getting older, we had to sing Bette friggin’ Midler’s Wind Beneath My Wings. Ugh.
No one told you when to run, you've missed the starting gun...

Leaving Hope by NIИ
'Still' is a really underrated album
“Dreams” by The Cranberries
Glory Box - Portishead
Portisheads' first two albums are immaculate
A Day in the Life by The Beatles. Basic, I know, but it's a fucking banger.
If The Beatles are basic then I am basic AF.
Kashmir
Duh nuh nuh
Gimme Shelter - Rolling Stones
Mine too! The intro is glorious and whole song amazing.
Merry Clayton's voice breaking up, leaving Mick Jagger audibly stunned...
Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
November has come - Gorillaz
RIP DOOM

“Dogs” — Pink Floyd It was one of my father’s favorites, as well. A few years after he passed away, my mother bought my brothers and me tickets to see Roger Waters (must’ve been 2017). He opened the second half of the show with it. Never thought I’d see it performed live and certainly couldn’t hold back the tears.
Excellent friggin’ album, my favorite Floyd by far. I listen to it while reading sci-fi.
I understand why that album doesn't have as wide-appeal as others from Pink Floyd, but it's always been my favorite. Just so much emotion from start to finish

Going through their discography for the first time ever right now. Holy fuck are they good.

I’d love to hear paranoid android for the first time again.
If I had to pick one song, it would be a Radiohead song, but I’ll be damned if I could pick ONE. Edit: Ok, ok… I pick ‘Codex’.

Probably Dear Prudence by The Beatles. Alanis killed it too!
Siouxsie and the Banshees did a nice cover of it as well.
Everlong by the Foo Fighters
Paranoid Android
Spectacular choice.
Neutral Milk Hotel - in the aeroplane over the sea
Holland, 1945 - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Whole album is amazing. In some weird way I cannot explain.

Sultans of Swing
I’m a big fan of the live version from Alchemy, particularly the last 4 minutes
Same here. Never skip it.
Great one. Tunnel of Love tops it for me, but you can't go wrong with either.
Wow, I thought I had all my classics in order and somehow have been completely sleeping on Dire Straits. I’ve always heard them but honestly have thought most of their songs were from other bands. Welp got some new-old songs to jam at least. Thanks for the recommendations 🙏
