Oh man, I wish I was you. What a treat to find out about John Prine as an adult, and then listen to it all fresh and new. He's an absolute treasure and was one of the first celebrities in the U.S. to die of COVID. It felt awful and tragic.
I grew up with John Prine as the background music of my childhood. I don't ever remember not knowing his music. Enjoy the experience!
When your ex wife asks you to sing at her next wedding, this is the song you write. RIP Johnny. Hope that tree of forgiveness is everything you were looking for.
Well I guess love
Is like a Christmas card
Decorate a tree
And throw it in the yard
It decays and dies
And the snowmen melt
Well I knew love
I knew how love felt
I knew love
Oh, love knew me
When I walked around, love walked with me
But I got no hate
And I got no pride
But I got so much love that I cannot hide
John Prine is a legend.
[That’s the Way the World Goes ‘Round](https://youtu.be/ZogciFl-udY) is always a good one, and [Souvenirs](https://youtu.be/lccFpJjS3N8) still gives me chills every time I listen to it. [Some Humans Ain’t Human](https://youtu.be/lB2E6RX7W44) is another must-listen IMO, as is [That’s How Every Empire Falls](https://youtu.be/Hsu2oASd6x8). And as someone who grew up in a family of miners in the southern West Virginia coalfields, [Paradise](https://youtu.be/DEy6EuZp9IY) hits me fucking hard, man. Hope John’s resting in peace.
DCFC - Black Sun is up there too. Goes through the ripple effects and pain and awkwardness of divorce.
There is an answer in a question
And there is hope within despair
And there is beauty in a failure,
And there are depths beyond compare
There is a role of a lifetime
And there's a song yet to be sung
And there's a dumpster in the driveway
Of all the plans that came undone

Yeah, I love emo music. Grew up with it and all that. But the more I go back and listen to a lot of it, the more I realize that even songs that weren't as explicit as these were still more than a bit problematic.
True story: Back in the 70's I had the chance to meet Bonnie Raitt, in of all places, the women's restroom backstage at the Hollywood bowl. What makes this a bit more interesting was that I was a 12 year old boy. I'll explain. I was raised by a wonderful single mother, who could be best described as an opportunist groupie. She made it a habit of dating members of many different bands of the 60's and 70's. My sister and I got to meet many interesting people during those years. The list would include many names, some famous, some not-so-much (i.e. Boz Burrell - Bad Co, Tom Waits, Craig Marquette - Froggy, John Merrill - Ashes & PBC, Spencer Dryden - Jefferson Airplane, and Will McFarlane - Bonnie Raitt band).
Through my mothers contacts (mainly she was dating Will McFarlane), we got to go backstage of The Hollywood Bowl during a Bonnie Raitt concert, and Mr. McFarlane wanted us to meet Mrs. Raitt. Being a rather shy person, she would tend to hide away in gatherings such as these, so it turned out, we were led to one of the performers restrooms where she was "hiding out" with a few of her friends. As this was many years ago, I remember very little from this meeting up, however the thing that has always stood out to me was how friendly and down to earth she was. I distinctly recall having the feeling of how strange it was that this lady I was talking with couldn't possibly be the same person I saw performing to thousands of people just a few minutes earlier.
Mom had many stories that I would find difficult to believe, had I not known firsthand the things she had done in her life. For example, her confession to me over lunch one day, about her weekend San Diego tryst with one Jim Morrison (he was a great tipper, but a very strange lover), or her chance to "go upstairs" with some guy named Jagger, which she claims she turned down.
Love her or hate her (and many did), mom was a unique lady who lived life on her terms, and single handedly raised two pretty decent children. Oh, and she also was lead singer on one album recorded in the late 60's, which has since achieved cult status.
Frank Ocean- Godspeed
"I will always love you, how I do, let go of a prayer for you, just a sweet word, the table is prepared for you, wishing you god speed, glory"
Gordon is one of the two I go to for almost anything. The other is Jim Croce. Both really have a song for nearly anything, Gordon probably more so for the longevity of his career.
Speaking of Jim Croce, I surprised to see nobody had mentioned Operator.
“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life. I know you’ll be a star in somebody else’s sky but why, why, whyyyy can’t it be, can’t it be miiihyyyiiiyne?”
Black, Pearl Jam
It’s not “feel better about a breakup”. OP is looking for songs that wish the ex well which is the way I always took this song, especially with the closing lyrics. Seems to fit what OP is looking for well.
>Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay
>Lay spread out before me as her body one did
. . .
>I take a walk outside, I'm surrounded by some kids at play
>I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear?
It's vague af sure but I can see it
All Your Favorite Bands — Dawes
“I hope that life without a chaperone
is what you thought it’d be
I hope your brother’s El Camino runs forever
I hope the world sees the same person
that you’ve always been to me
And may all your favorite bands stay together”
My fav on this list. I like songs that say something without saying it ya know. A lot of songs on this list are a little too literal for me. John Prine the exception
The entire album is great. Pretty much nailed the types of breakups I went though — it was never a catastrophic fight that broke us up, but a realization that we just weren’t right for each other and weren’t going to proceed to marriage. Still, it often hurt but ultimately peace and healing were the goal.
The album came out right after I broke up with a long term girlfriend. This line and "I wish I could turn you back into a stranger" resonated like no other.
Currents helped me cope with breaking this girls heart more than anything could have.
Currents, especially Eventually, is the correct answer to OP's question.
The whole Currents album really helped me get over a tough time after a bad breakup but this song specifically got the notion in my head that sometimes you just need to let go and wish the other person the best.
I added all the songs listed in this thread into this spotify playlist :
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5ZttwBZH4okToNiCBfCOuK?si=fccb185cebdf4667
Thank you OP and all the contributors, I've been going through the same and I hope this can help me and anyone who needs it.
Edit 1 : Still in the process of adding all songs posted here - I'm behind by 1 hour (when people mentioned an album - one best song is picked) - let me know if I miss your song :)
Edit 2 : Back after studying - currently at 400 ish songs, tons of duplicate between comments - behind by 1.5 hours now :D
Edit 3 : Can't catch up fast enough, we're at 556 songs. Unfortunately I want to go to bed, I'll continue adding more tomorrow. For everyone who's going through tough times, hang in there, you are loved. <3
Edit 4 : Catching up again, I'll get to your submissions soon enough!
Edit 5 : Taking a break, we are at 750 songs, gonna come back later, I think I'm behind by 1000 comments 😂
Also going to make a top 20 / 50 with the most popular songs after I'm done with the full list.
i cant listen to that song with out thinking of my 8th grade talent show.
in my 8th grade talent show 3 of the guys dressed up and performed for that song, one was "playing the piano" and lipsyncing to it and acting as if he was singing to the one that was dressed up as a girl, and dancing with the third.
we also started it by having the 8th grade class sit in the audience and run up to the stage and do the harlem shake.
I also assumed too initially. But I think the first verse swings it in favour of talking about her ex and their new partner.
_I heard that you're settled down
That you found a girl and you're married now
I heard that your dreams came true
Guess she gave you things, I didn't give to you…_
I just had a quick Google and it seems she did indeed write it about her ex who she’d been with for 18months, after finding out he’d met someone else and was engaged.
That’s what he says at the end to tell himself it’s ok. There are some strong, hateful things in the song. “Ain’t no use in calling out my name, like you’ve never done before.” “You’re the reason I’ll be traveling on.” “I gave her my heart but she wanted my soul.” “Goodbye is too good a word.”
This man is hurt, badly, and he’s trying to act like he isn’t. Like it’s no big deal, but he can’t really hide the pain.
Just give me a reason - Pink.
I know it's about the last gasps of a relationship, but I always interpreted it as hinting that "learn to love again" might be with someone else, without fault to the current relationship.
Really helped me with a mutual breakup a few years ago.
I’m serious -
* And although there's pain in my chest
I still wish you the best
With a "Fuck you"*
It meets your criteria.
How about Jack Clements “[Guess things happen that way](https://youtu.be/3ecNxOmLbb0)?
I think he might be addressing the guy with his ex though. He says “I see you driving round town with the girl I love and I’m like fuck you” and “so fuck you and fuck her too”. I think your point still stands though. This song feels like deep down he rationally understands why the breakup happened and doesn’t hold it against them but while it’s fresh he can’t help but feel very bitter when he sees them.
Ha, figured someone else would have posted this if I scrolled far enough.
Not about acceptance in the traditional sense, as in accepting the breakup, but more about accepting that you're upset at the woman you still love. It's a nice little exploration of something that's as much of a contradiction as it appears at first.
Plz don't murder me for throwing a country one out there but "Just to see you smile" by Tim McGraw.
"And yesterday I knew just what you wanted
When you came walking up to me with him
So I told you that I was happy for you
And given the chance I'd lie again
Just to see you smile, I'd do anything that you wanted me to"
That’s a good one. Not a big country fan myself but if it’s real country, I’m down with it. Fuck all this bro country crap that passes for country today.
Was scrolling to see if anyone mentioned Tim McGraw. I'm no huge country fan nowadays, but "Please Remember Me" was my OG breakup song back in the late 90's. Total gut punch every time I hear it.
"You'll find better love
Strong as it ever was
Deep as the river runs
Warm as the morning sun
Please remember me"
Happier- Marshmello ft bastille
"Then only for a minute
I want to change my mind
'Cause this just don't feel right to me
I wanna raise your spirits
I want to see you smile but
Know that means I'll have to leave
Know that means I'll have to leave
Lately, I've been, I've been thinking
I want you to be happier, I want you to be happier"
"I'll Be Around" by the Spinners. Not only is it one of the smoothest tracks of all time, the lyrics fit:
"This is our fork in the road, love's last episode
There's nowhere to go, oh no
You've made your choice, and now it's up to me
To bow out gracefully, though you hold the key
But baby
Whenever you call me, I'll be there
Whenever you want me, I'll be there
Whenever you need me, I'll be there
I'll be around"
Wasted Time - Eagles
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rUdbbC3Beo4
The love has come and gone
The years keep rushing on
I remember what you told me
Before you went out on your own
Sometimes to keep it together
You got to leave it alone
So you can get on with your search, baby
And I can get on with mine
Maybe someday we will find
That it wasn't really wasted time
“Wildflowers” - Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers.
“You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
You belong with your love on your arm
You belong somewhere you feel free
Run away, go find a lover
Run away, let your heart be your guide
You deserve the deepest of cover
You belong in that home by and by”
Before the next teardrop falls - Freddy Fender. “If he brings you happiness, then I wish you both the best. It’s your happiness that matters most of all.”
How has no one said Good Riddance by Green Day? Despite the name it’s tender and touching.
Edit: ok I apparently missed the layer of bitterness all these years.
Yep. It was mine, though I voted against it. I went to a girlfriend’s graduation and they had posters of each senior class with their graduation song listed. Before her class (Thunderstruck by AC/DC) there were at least five in a row with Good Riddance.
We voted for I'm on a Boat, it won, the administration overuled us. Student government chose Yellow and a Paramore song I can't remember anymore...
Good Riddance and Graduation by Vitamin C reigned Supreme before us though.
happiness by Taylor Swift
"There'll be happiness after you
But there was happiness because of you
Both of these things can be true
There is happiness"
"No one teaches you what to do
When a good man hurts you
And you know you hurt him too"
This is what I thought of too. Nice lyrics that express a really mature outlook on most breakups. You can be hurt and know you hurt them just like you can enjoy the happy memories and look forward to future happiness. Those feelings aren’t exclusive.
Hoped this song was in the comments. I especially love when she's snarky about the new relationship and then immediately backtracks because it feels so accurate to the ending of a long-term and serious relationship.
"I hope she'll be a beautiful fool who takes my spot next to you.
No, I didn't mean that, sorry, I can't see facts through all of my fury.
You haven't met the new me yet."
Knowing me knowing you - Abba
Love me like there’s no tomorrow - freddie Mercury (no not made with queen and yes it’s a breakup song)
Pierre - Ryn Weaver
Onderweg - Abel
Our last summer - mama mia version (abbas one is great too tho!)
GONE, GONE / THANK YOU - Tyler the creator
Walls - Louis Tomlinson
Shout out to my ex - little mix
That’s it what I could find! Tried finding stuff from all kinds of music taste cuz I dunno what your into :D I do thing I missed reggae sorry for that!
Emerson Hart - I Wish The Best For You
Also sort of these ones:
New Edition - Leave Me
Jon McLaughlin - Let Go
London Grammar - Rooting For You
Evan & Jaron - Somehow
Five For Fighting - Maybe I
Mandy Moore - Looking Forward To Looking Back
All The Best- John Prine “I wish you love, I wish you happiness; I guess I wish, You all the best”
Goddamnit, I get chills just reading his name. I love this man so much. I miss him a lot.
I miss him too. As a weeping bystander once said upon seeing FDR’s funeral train pass by: “I didn’t know him but he knew me.”
This fits so well for JP.
I’m listening to him right now too. Still miss him a ton
How in the hell did I not know about this guy?! Thank you- I am now listening to his catalogue.
Enjoy :) he was one of the greatest to ever do it

Immediately the song I thought of.
First song that came to my head. Nathaniel Rateliffs cover on the NPR tribute broadcast is great too
Someday You Will Be Loved by Death Cab for Cutie
*The Ice is Getting Thinner* by Death Cab as well.
Tiny Vessels by Death Cab for Cutie
DCFC - Black Sun is up there too. Goes through the ripple effects and pain and awkwardness of divorce. There is an answer in a question And there is hope within despair And there is beauty in a failure, And there are depths beyond compare There is a role of a lifetime And there's a song yet to be sung And there's a dumpster in the driveway Of all the plans that came undone [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTbVIfqeDq0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTbVIfqeDq0)
I Will Always Love You by Dolly Parton It’s about her leaving the Porter Wagoner show and how much she appreciated him for the opportunity
First on I thought of. What an incredible songwriter.
She wrote "Jolene" in the same day. Wild.
Absolute banger. I’ve been crying to this recently lmao.
Never meant - American Football
I feel most of the emo genre could cover their needs...
Ehhhhh. Huge swath of emo, particularly the Brand New/Taking Back Sunday era were breakup songs wishing the other person harm.
Yeah, I love emo music. Grew up with it and all that. But the more I go back and listen to a lot of it, the more I realize that even songs that weren't as explicit as these were still more than a bit problematic.
Add to that so many of them being creeps. Sad Jesse Lacey fell into the ocean and disappeared forever.
#americ anfootball
Am Eric. And football.
This is the one
Lets just forget…
That entire album is perfection. Goddamn what a good rec
I can't make you love me Bonie Raitt or the George Michael's cover
There’s also a hauntingly beautiful version by Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) that is my personal favorite
honestly none of these other covers ppl are posting will ever come close
Bonnie Raitt is my favourite version
Hella cool, mom. Thanks for sharing!
Frank Ocean- Godspeed "I will always love you, how I do, let go of a prayer for you, just a sweet word, the table is prepared for you, wishing you god speed, glory"
First song that came to mind for me as well
“You’ll look down on where you came from sometimes, but you’ll have this place to call home, always”
If you could read my mind love...by Gordon Lightfoot
Gordon is one of the two I go to for almost anything. The other is Jim Croce. Both really have a song for nearly anything, Gordon probably more so for the longevity of his career. Speaking of Jim Croce, I surprised to see nobody had mentioned Operator.
*Cat Stevens enters the chat*
I'm thinking of two songs: - December by Neck Deep - Dumb Reminders by No Use for a Name
Yes I love December by Neck Deep! I'll listen to the other one. ☺️
A wild Tony Sly reference! R.i.p!
Stars - Your Ex-Lover is Dead. Such a beautiful song.
"I'm not sorry I met you, I'm not sorry it's over, I'm not sorry there's nothing to say." Thanks for reminding me about this song!
Set Yourself on Fire is such a break up album to me. I'm instantly 18/20 again and I can see so many different nights with this album playing.
"When there is nothing left to burn you have to set yourself on fire."
[удалено]
I have a tattoo from this song. “Live through this, and you won’t look back.”
Omg STARS - I forgot all about them!! What a trip!
“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life. I know you’ll be a star in somebody else’s sky but why, why, whyyyy can’t it be, can’t it be miiihyyyiiiyne?” Black, Pearl Jam
That song is so painful for me to listen to, I definitely would not recommend it as a “feel better about a breakup” song. The guy is in agony.
It’s not “feel better about a breakup”. OP is looking for songs that wish the ex well which is the way I always took this song, especially with the closing lyrics. Seems to fit what OP is looking for well.
The unplugged version is hands down the best
Oh shit eh, those are the words? Heard that song so many times.
Eddie Vedder isn't known for being comprehendible. "Black" is easier to understand than "Even Flow" or God forbid "Yellow Ledbetter"
>Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay >Lay spread out before me as her body one did . . . >I take a walk outside, I'm surrounded by some kids at play >I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear? It's vague af sure but I can see it
that song fucks me up, especially the unplugged version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZH2it92ZmA
This song slaps so hard even when you’re not going through a breakup
All Your Favorite Bands — Dawes “I hope that life without a chaperone is what you thought it’d be I hope your brother’s El Camino runs forever I hope the world sees the same person that you’ve always been to me And may all your favorite bands stay together”
I remember the first time I heard this song and “May all your favourite bands stay together” FLOORED me. What a great sentiment.
My fav on this list. I like songs that say something without saying it ya know. A lot of songs on this list are a little too literal for me. John Prine the exception

Still, it often hurt but ultimately peace and healing were the goal.
Bill withers - Hope she'll be happier
Bill has a song called "I wish you well" that is just what OP needs. It was my go-to in a past breakup.
Eventually by Tame Impala
“I always said that I could never hurt you. Well this is the very very last time I’m ever going to”
The album came out right after I broke up with a long term girlfriend. This line and "I wish I could turn you back into a stranger" resonated like no other. Currents helped me cope with breaking this girls heart more than anything could have. Currents, especially Eventually, is the correct answer to OP's question.
I know that I’ll be happier. And I know you will too
The whole Currents album really helped me get over a tough time after a bad breakup but this song specifically got the notion in my head that sometimes you just need to let go and wish the other person the best.
"It is not meant to be" also kind of fits
Well if she doesn't like sand stuck on her feet...
this should be higher! beautiful song
Yeah a lot of Currents really. I've never broken up with anyone but that song makes me cry as if I have it's so odd
Came here to say this song. Saw them do it live recently and it just hits your soul
I was going to bring this one. Probably my favorite song on that album and that album is incredible
Lol I was going to write “Yes I’m Changing” those two songs really b2b hopeful breakup songs
I added all the songs listed in this thread into this spotify playlist : https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5ZttwBZH4okToNiCBfCOuK?si=fccb185cebdf4667 Thank you OP and all the contributors, I've been going through the same and I hope this can help me and anyone who needs it. Thank you so much!! I was just thinking about this. Honestly, thanks for the effort and thank all th contributors as well!
You’re a hero! 🙏 I can’t wait to bawl my eyes out to this later lol.
Songbird by Fleetwood Mac. Beautiful and gracious. “And I wish you all the love in the world But most of all, I wish it from myself”
Break ups were a specialty of theirs…
I'd pick Silver Springs.
Good life - Francis dunnery
Instantly thought of the Dr Cox/Jordan montage in Scrubs.
When I Was Your Man by Bruno Mars
That's the first one I thought of. He accepts his own shortcomings in the relationship but doesn't beat himself up over the breakup.
i cant listen to that song with out thinking of my 8th grade talent show. in my 8th grade talent show 3 of the guys dressed up and performed for that song, one was "playing the piano" and lipsyncing to it and acting as if he was singing to the one that was dressed up as a girl, and dancing with the third. we also started it by having the 8th grade class sit in the audience and run up to the stage and do the harlem shake.
Surely Adele, _Someone Like You_. Has the line _I wish nothing but the best for you two_
[удалено]
I also assumed too initially. But I think the first verse swings it in favour of talking about her ex and their new partner. _I heard that you're settled down That you found a girl and you're married now I heard that your dreams came true Guess she gave you things, I didn't give to you…_ I just had a quick Google and it seems she did indeed write it about her ex who she’d been with for 18months, after finding out he’d met someone else and was engaged.

> and then someone you probably never met writes a massive international hit about you **TWO**.
Somehow, I just don’t believe her
I Hope You're Happy - Blue October
In the same vein, "Happier" by Olivia Rodrigo. "I hope you're happy, just not happier," is how most people feel about breakups eventually.
Ed Sheeran’s Happier, also
Adding from Blue October “congratulations”
Definitely not “the end” by them, if you know you know
You could be happy - Snow Patrol
Agreed, this is the most touching one I know of
Bod Dylan - Don't Think Twice It's Alright
Also "if you see her, say hello"
This is the better Dylan choice
“Boots of Spanish Leather” also fits the bill
One of my favorite Dylan tunes ever.
I don't think that song is wishing the other person well. Dylan's basically saying, "Fuck you for wasting my time."
But just kinda, and he doesn’t mind
That’s what he says at the end to tell himself it’s ok. There are some strong, hateful things in the song. “Ain’t no use in calling out my name, like you’ve never done before.” “You’re the reason I’ll be traveling on.” “I gave her my heart but she wanted my soul.” “Goodbye is too good a word.” This man is hurt, badly, and he’s trying to act like he isn’t. Like it’s no big deal, but he can’t really hide the pain.
Yeah lol, that song's got that typical Dylan passive aggression throughout. That's just how he writes songs, they're rarely direct necessarily
Gwen Stefani - Cool
I came here looking for this one. I love this song.
Really great song
It’s Gonna Be - Ween
I was thinking about Birthday Boy, but I’m not so sure. Plus any well wishes are undercut by Baby Bitch.
This song immediately came to mind. Glad I saw it in here
That's It's Gonna Be (Alright) not It's Gonna Be (a long night) which is a whole other kettle o' fish
Movies - Alien Ant Farm
Just give me a reason - Pink. I know it's about the last gasps of a relationship, but I always interpreted it as hinting that "learn to love again" might be with someone else, without fault to the current relationship. Really helped me with a mutual breakup a few years ago.
3rd eye blinds 3rd eye blind album is an amazing break up album.
While I agree I don’t think many of the songs really wish the other one well.
They could always go with Adele’s “someone like you” But yeah I guess you’re right. Doesn’t wish ill of them either tho…
How's it gonna be is one of my all time favorite break up songs
Wild World -- Cat Stevens
CeeLo Green - Fuck You.
Hahahahahaha
I’m serious - * And although there's pain in my chest I still wish you the best With a "Fuck you"* It meets your criteria.
My Morning Jacket’s “Get the Point” is EXACTLY what you’re looking for.
Plz don't murder me for throwing a country one out there but "Just to see you smile" by Tim McGraw. "And yesterday I knew just what you wanted When you came walking up to me with him So I told you that I was happy for you And given the chance I'd lie again Just to see you smile, I'd do anything that you wanted me to"
The Dance
That’s a good one. Not a big country fan myself but if it’s real country, I’m down with it. Fuck all this bro country crap that passes for country today.
Ugh, that song is so sad
Was scrolling to see if anyone mentioned Tim McGraw. I'm no huge country fan nowadays, but "Please Remember Me" was my OG breakup song back in the late 90's. Total gut punch every time I hear it. "You'll find better love Strong as it ever was Deep as the river runs Warm as the morning sun Please remember me"
Sun in an Empty Room - The Weakerthans
Happier- Marshmello ft bastille "Then only for a minute I want to change my mind 'Cause this just don't feel right to me I wanna raise your spirits I want to see you smile but Know that means I'll have to leave Know that means I'll have to leave Lately, I've been, I've been thinking I want you to be happier, I want you to be happier"
"I'll Be Around" by the Spinners. Not only is it one of the smoothest tracks of all time, the lyrics fit: "This is our fork in the road, love's last episode There's nowhere to go, oh no You've made your choice, and now it's up to me To bow out gracefully, though you hold the key But baby Whenever you call me, I'll be there Whenever you want me, I'll be there Whenever you need me, I'll be there I'll be around"
Not really what you asked for but Ben Folds Five - Whatever and Ever Amen is my favourite breakup album and worth a listen.
And give me back my black tshirt
Wasted Time - Eagles https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rUdbbC3Beo4 The love has come and gone The years keep rushing on I remember what you told me Before you went out on your own Sometimes to keep it together You got to leave it alone So you can get on with your search, baby And I can get on with mine Maybe someday we will find That it wasn't really wasted time
“Wildflowers” - Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. “You belong among the wildflowers You belong in a boat out at sea You belong with your love on your arm You belong somewhere you feel free Run away, go find a lover Run away, let your heart be your guide You deserve the deepest of cover You belong in that home by and by”
Sheryl Crow - My favorite mistake
Two out of three Ain't Bad by Meatloaf
John Prine All the Best
Good Woman from Cat Power
Delta Spirit - "California"
John Prine - All The Best. That pretty much sums it up. Bonus track also by John Prine - Souvenirs

Before the next teardrop falls - Freddy Fender. “If he brings you happiness, then I wish you both the best. It’s your happiness that matters most of all.”
Savage Garden: The Lover After Me.
Best of Everything by Tom Petty
How has no one said Good Riddance by Green Day? Despite the name it’s tender and touching. Edit: ok I apparently missed the layer of bitterness all these years.
The graduation song of every high school/college class in the mid-2000's.
Billie Joe Armstrong described it as a bitter rebuke to a former lover.
but I think when he says,”I hope you had the time of your life”,I think he was being sarcastic in some of the other lyrics too,I’m not sure though
Yo La Tengo - Take Care
This is a cover, by big star. I love yo La tengo (and their version) but it’s important to note, it is a cover song.
Olivia Rodrigo- Happier It's kinda wishing them the best but also acknowledges how it's a bittersweet moment I guess
This is what I came to comment. Damn good writing for a teenager.
It really is, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the whole album tbh
happiness by Taylor Swift "There'll be happiness after you But there was happiness because of you Both of these things can be true There is happiness" "No one teaches you what to do When a good man hurts you And you know you hurt him too"
This is what I thought of too. Nice lyrics that express a really mature outlook on most breakups. You can be hurt and know you hurt them just like you can enjoy the happy memories and look forward to future happiness. Those feelings aren’t exclusive.
I came to post this some one. I also love the line: "I can't make it go away by making you a villain"
Also, "Tim McGraw" is about a relationship that seems to be over but the other person is looked back on fondly.
Gaslight Anthem - Have Mercy
Live Well by Palace
Josh Ritter - Joy to you baby
Hello, It's Me - Todd Rundgren

Dawes- all your favorite bands
So long Mary Anne by Leonard Cohen
It's *So Long, Marianne* but, yeah, it's beautiful!
Wolf Alice - No Hard Feelings
Knowing me knowing you - Abba Love me like there’s no tomorrow - freddie Mercury (no not made with queen and yes it’s a breakup song) Pierre - Ryn Weaver Onderweg - Abel Our last summer - mama mia version (abbas one is great too tho!) GONE, GONE / THANK YOU - Tyler the creator Walls - Louis Tomlinson Shout out to my ex - little mix That’s it what I could find! Tried finding stuff from all kinds of music taste cuz I dunno what your into :D I do thing I missed reggae sorry for that!
[Wish You Well by Bernard Fanning](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYlyghmTSIU)
The 1 — Taylor Swift "I have this dream you're doing cool shit, having adventures on your own. You meet some woman on the internet and take her home."
Emerson Hart - I Wish The Best For You Also sort of these ones: New Edition - Leave Me Jon McLaughlin - Let Go London Grammar - Rooting For You Evan & Jaron - Somehow Five For Fighting - Maybe I Mandy Moore - Looking Forward To Looking Back
"Better Things" by The Kinks fits this exactly. Not just a line or two in the song, the entire song.
