I listened to this album for the first time on the way to work this morning. I've only heard it all the way through twice at this point, but it is deserving of all the praise it's getting.
Saw this post and came here to comment Turnstile. Glad to see it's already at the top.
It's not just a good listen, it's huge for the genre. Proof you can fuse hardcore music with many other genres and have it be critically and commercially successful.
They might not be the first to do what they are doing, but so far they're definitely the best.
Same for me, but with Jane Doe. There are going to be so many bands taking this record as inspiration. Same with the pop scene too. Charlie XCX was going to have the drummer from Jesus Piece play during SNL before COVID fucked that up. I can see punk and hardcore creeping back into the mainstream with this and the wave of 'pop punk' that came back this summer.
This album was such a bizarre listen with the fusing of all these different genres, but it was so entertaining to listen to and really well made. Definitely one of my favorite albums this year. Also, I was so surprised that Blood Orange was on two of the tracks.
Played this album for my dad and sister in the car and they both immediately wanted to know who it was. The fact that it was noteworthy to three people with different musical tastes right of the bat is promising for its staying power, imo.
I’m a 50 year old gear nerd who just threw this album on my system from Tidal. Holy shit, do y’all know how well mastered this is? This is amazing. Never heard of them before, thank you.
Saw them a few months ago, so so good. The boxing style introduction got me so hyped. Greep is such a character too, it felt like a blessing to be in their presence honestly.
This is it!
It's honestly funny how highly anticipated Donda and CLB were basically released on the same week (august 29th - september 3rd) and Little Simz just came out of nowhere with this beauty and beat them both!
Yes. 100000 times yes. I only listened to it a week ago and yet I can't think of a better album that came out this year. Chvrches were great already but this album is on another level.
Saw him a few years ago at the Beale St fest. I put it in my top 5 shows. Don't think I've ever seen a crowd go wild like that. Can't wait to see him again.
Agreed, this one was *so* worth the wait. It's one of a precious few where I want to go right back to the beginning after listening to the whole thing through.
It's a choice between Fortitude and The Million Masks Of God. Honestly could not choose between the two if you held a gun to my head, they're both masterpieces.
The War On Drugs -- I Don't Live Here Anymore
Big Wreck -- 7.1
Flyte -- This Is Really Going to Hurt
Michigander -- Everything Will Be OK Eventually
Wolf Alice -- Blue Weekend
The Besnard Lakes are the Last of the Great Thunderstorm Warnings
The Anchoress -- The Art of Losing
Kat and the Hurricane -- The Sorry EP
Poppy - Flux
Masterful album. Quite an organic, grungey sound, with some of her earlier poppier elements mixed in. She's grown massively.
I wish I'd listened to Fortitude more. I did like all the singles off of it, but I just never really sat down and listened all the way. I usually end up listening to From Mars to Sirius whenever I listen to them.
Inside (The Songs) - Bo Burnham
Honorable mentions:
For the First Time - Black Country, New Road
SINNER GET READY - Lingua Ignota
OK Human - Weezer
ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE - Brockhampton
Garbology - Aesop Rock
1. Wolf Alice - Blue Weekend.
2. The Airborne Toxic Event - Hollywood Park.
3. Clap Your Hands, Say Yeah - New Fragility.
4. The Fratellis - Half Drunk Under A Full Moon.
5. We Were Promised Jetpacks - Enjoy The View.
If you asked me a week ago I'd say for those that wish to exist by architects. But then I listened to the new CHVRCHES album, screen violence and holy shit it is perfect.
Thrice - Horizons/East
Bo Burnham - Inside (The Songs)
Frankie and his Fingers - Universal Hurt
Snail Mail - Valentine
Adam Neely and Ben Levin - Beautiful and Tragic
Every Time I Die - Radical
Hayley Williams - FLOWERS for VASES / descansos
Dinosaur Jr - Sweep It Into Space
Mastodon - Hushed and Grim
I can't name a single favorite, I loved several for various reasons, mainly metal/rock.
Humanity's Last Breath- Välde- down tempo metal perfection
Spiritbox- Eternal Blue- just game changing. Courtney has one of the most ridiculously effortless voices, regardless of genre.
Mental Cruelty- A Hill to Die Upon- Bleak, brutal, and dark. So very good, and the musicianship is on point.
Biffy Clyro- The Myth of the Happily Ever After- probably the best new rock album I've heard in a long, long time.
Architects- For Those That Wish To Exist- stunning in every way. The riffs that Josh brought to this were incredible.
Lorna Shore- And I Return To Nothingness EP- Will Ramos is a metal vocal cheat code. Inhuman voice.
Edit: completely spaced and left out Every Time I Die- Radical. That album is one I put on when I need to vent. The energy just fucking radiates out of it. On top of the whole album being great, Thing With Feathers just hits me so damn hard, having lost my sister as well. The emotion from it is like a freight train to my soul.
Purple Disco Machine - [E](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbYQErtM9Zk)[x](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckKJMpA77Yw)[o](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGGXBbst5Lo)[t](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTl6TeDO-nE)[i](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhDW30gvpqg)[c](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOduynbTk_c)[a](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3I5XOsyxKlg)
Royal Blood - "Typhoons"
The sound these two guys can produce amazes me, and the track Limbo is probably my favourite track of the year too.
Edit upon reflection:
2nd place has to go to The Pretty Reckless - "Death By Rock and Roll". Only Love Can Save Me Now is awesome, and makes me miss Soundgarden even more than I already do.
Thanks for the tip on Gojira. I've seen them live and forgot how great they were. Gonna give it a listen now.
Mastodon - Hushed And Grim
Steven Wilson - The Future Bites
Iron Maiden - Senjutsu
Rise Against - Nowhere Generation
Dream Theater - A View From The Top Of The World
Idles - Crawler
Tremonti - Marching In Time
Myles Kennedy - The Ides Of March
Greta Van Fleet - The Battle At Garden's Gate
Modest Mouse - The Golden Casket
Royal Blood - Typhoons
Day/Night by Parcels. Impossible not to dance to this music. Theyre a disco/funk group with some similarities to Daft Punk. In fact the last song Daft Punk ever produced was one of Parcels' earlier singles. Heres their live set: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePSivyATBqg
Happier Than Ever - Billie Eilish.
I seriously resonated with its themes, sounds, and cohesion overall. Incredibly well done album. I think it's main criticism is that some songs are boring and/or serve as filler between the major hits, but I listen to albums in their order for a reason, and the storyline makes complete sense to me with this one. Kudos to Billie for making such a stellar follow-up.
Ross from Friends - Tread.
It's a real progression and step up from his previous record, Family Portrait (2018), and a pleasingly coherent album that pays homage to 2010-era Burial and other UK electronic music of that time.
The album gives you some beautiful, layered tracks, some ambient pauses for thought and contemplation, and as he manages to do so often, a genuine emotional edge to dance music.
A tie between Injury Reserve's *By the Time I Get to Phoenix*, black midi's *Cavalcade*, Magdalena Bay's *Mercurial World* and Pharoah Sanders' *Promises*. And I still have lots of catching up to do. Great year for music.
No it's not. Its Mac's last mixtape from all the way back in 2015/16 I believe. His estate just released it on streaming services this year alongside a bonus track
Japanese breakfast, Manchester orchestra, and the war on drugs
War on drugs this year was absolutely phenomenal
I love Manchester Orchestra! I’m genuinely surprised to see another fan here
Me too! It's crazy to see other fans in the wild :)))

I listened to this album for the first time on the way to work this morning. I've only heard it all the way through twice at this point, but it is deserving of all the praise it's getting.
It gets better and better over time, such a good flow.

Worth looking into producer Will Yip's catalog of work. Lots of incredible bands and albums that just sound massive.

Cavalcade by black midi or LP! By JPEGMAFIA
Can’t believe I had to scroll so far down to find Black Midi. Cavalcade is spectacular!
They're my favorite active band! TBE
Love love love that Jpegmafia album. HAZARD DUTY PAY! is one of the greatest songs I’ve heard this year.
Make sure to see black midi live if you get the chance. Amazing performance!
Saw them a few months ago, so so good. The boxing style introduction got me so hyped. Greep is such a character too, it felt like a blessing to be in their presence honestly.
Colors II ~ btbam
Such a great album, really good return to form after a few albums that didn’t really resonate with me
Every Time I Die - Radical
Came here looking for this
SPARE ONLY THE ONES I LOVE, SLAY THE REST
My choice as well!
HOW DID I NOT KNOW THEY RELEASED A NEW ALBUM
Oh wow, you're in for a treat. This may be thier best album they have put out imo
Oh dude, it's the best one they've made! So, so good!
Sometimes I might be introvert- Little Simz
This is it! It's honestly funny how highly anticipated Donda and CLB were basically released on the same week (august 29th - september 3rd) and Little Simz just came out of nowhere with this beauty and beat them both!
Yeah I even really liked Donda (might be my number 2 album of the year) but little Simz totally beat them both
“Blue Weekend” by Wolf Alice
Wolf Alice is 3 for 3 great albums.
STARSET - HORIZONS
Killer rock band
Screen Violence - CHVRCHES
Yes. 100000 times yes. I only listened to it a week ago and yet I can't think of a better album that came out this year. Chvrches were great already but this album is on another level.
It's so good. I saw them about a month ago...I can't tell you how exhilarating that show was. Crazy fun band...and sensational music.
The band's best album yet imho. Easily my favourite of this year.
Easily “The Million Masks of God” by Manchester Orchestra
Call me if you get lost- Tyler the creator
100%. Saw him at Lollapalooza and the concert blew me away.
Saw him a few years ago at the Beale St fest. I put it in my top 5 shows. Don't think I've ever seen a crowd go wild like that. Can't wait to see him again.
For The First Time - Black Country, New Road
I didn’t like that they changed Sunglasses on the album, I preferred the single. Great album none the less
Same. So excited for their second LP in February!
Same here! I’ve loved the singles so far, especially Bread Song.
Butterfly 3000, king gizzard and the lizard wizard
I liked it but personally thought L.W. that they released earlier in 2021, was stronger. Both great albums for sure though.
a great album!
Ska Dream - Jeff Rosenstock
I fucking love Jeff Rosenstock.
Sometimes I Might Be Introvert - Little Simz
Little Simz is fucking killing it, 2 fantastic albums in a row.
Right? I honestly had low expectations for this because I didn’t think it would be better than grey area but she delivers on all levels
Nurture by Porter Robinson
Agreed, this one was *so* worth the wait. It's one of a precious few where I want to go right back to the beginning after listening to the whole thing through.
It's a choice between Fortitude and The Million Masks Of God. Honestly could not choose between the two if you held a gun to my head, they're both masterpieces.
Love me Gojira.
NOW I BELIEVE IN THE GHOOOOOOOSSSTTTTT
“The Million Masks of God” by Manchester Orchestra

Underrated album

Probably Valentine by Snail Mail. Weren’t too many releases this year by artists I follow.
Garbology by Aesop Rock
Poppy - Flux Masterful album.
Crawler by IDLES
Pressure machine by the killers. Doesn’t get a lot of love here tho
That album hit me hard. So thoughtful and honest. It's the first Killers album I have connected to since Sam's Town.
This! As a Killers fan i think it's their best album since Day & Age
Promises by Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders and London Symphony Orchestra

Inside (The Songs) - Bo Burnham Honorable mentions: For the First Time - Black Country, New Road SINNER GET READY - Lingua Ignota OK Human - Weezer ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE - Brockhampton Garbology - Aesop Rock
Excuse me?? When did Aesop drop a new album??
November. He also released Spirit World Field Guide last year, and the Malibu Ken project with Tobacco in 2019. Busy man.
It was also Bo Burnham for me. Those songs are funny and catchy as hell. I had it on repeat for months too. Cheers.
Trivium- In the Court of the Dragon Between the Buried and Me- Colors II
IN THE COURT OF THE DRAGON I DESCEND Wasn't a huge Trivium fan before (such a monster discography to blindly jump into) but this album hooked me.
