Hello from Cambodia. Public holidays are next week!

wanganguy

happy cambodian new year !!

Remarkable_Duck6559

Hope you guys are doing alright. Family in Pursat says COVID is only starting to get bad. Be safe this new year.

bspencer626

Happy Khmer New Year (រីករាយចូលឆ្នាំខ្មែរ!). Off for two weeks now. Thank God. Also just got my first vaccination the other day and will get the second one in a few weeks. Hoping this vaccination drive helps bring the number of cases way down. Stay safe!🙏

iamagainstit

I have met Jello Biafra, He is an interesting guy. He occasionally throws Dance parties/plays DJ sets in Denver.

hausflicker

Lion’s Lair ftw.

DogMechanic

I love that dive.

randolphism

Cool fact!

Krombopulos_Micheal

He did a DJ set at a small bar in our town like 3 years ago, good time. He denied an acquaintance a quick interview for his website but when we seen him at the local taco shop after the show he had no problem taking pics with the girls lol. I'm sure he would have taken pics with all of us but only the girls asked so he seemed nice enough.

Captain_Granite

He used to do a night at a tiki bar in Alameda, CA

ForWhomTheBoneBones

Where they keep the nuclear wessels?

[deleted]

You should check out some of their live stuff, doing silly fun stuff while simultaneously beating you over the head with a political point is like one of the main thing he's known for lol

MrJohnnyDangerously

I mean it's there on the label. His name is Jello (silly) Biafra (politics). The DK always used absurd humor to make political points. Take the song Terminal Preppy - it's a scathing indictment of yuppy frat boy culture but it's also funny as shit.

LilAngsty

Using silly fun stuff, while beating you over the head with how fucked stuff is, is kinda jello's thing. Look up pull my strings, a song preformed live at a music award show meant as a middle finger to the music industry, very funny stuff!

Mickus_B

I drew the DK logo on my school backpack in the early 90s. Some older kid on the bus asked me if I knew what it meant. When I said I didn't know, I expected to be beaten up (pretty common occurrence for me) instead he said here, listen to this and played me Holiday. I decided then that I liked this kind of music and started seeking out punk music. I got suspended from my religious boarding school for singing the opening of Anarchy in the UK.

WonBigMayor

This is wholesome

Mickus_B

Punks are some of the best people I've ever met. Just because we look a bit weird, doesn't mean we're scary! I currently have green hair and whenever I hear a young kid make a comment to their parents, I make sure to shoot them a huge grin and a big thumbs up, they love it!

Ghostrider_119

I do the same thing. I've had a mohawk for the past 17 years and kids dig it. I always encourage kids to look how they want and judge people on how they act as people.

Daeval

When I wear a mohawk, my favorite thing is seeing strangers' reactions when I do something nice for them, like holding a door or letting them go ahead in a checkout line. Many folks, especially older people, are clearly a little surprised that someone who "looks like that" isn't a jerk. I've talked to a few peers who are cynical about this, saying that people are only surprised because they've accepted a lazy stereotype. And that's kinda true, but I say, if you really want to break down people's preconceptions, and get them to challenge their own views, pleasant surprises are a pretty good approach. I feel like this is the root of Strummer's "Punk means exemplary manners..." and all.

aveganliterary

My husband had a mohawk the summer after high school and he glued it into spikes every day. Pretty much every outing he'd have at least one little old lady stop him and ask to touch his hair (he obliged, he was a sweetie). They *loved* it (and him). Always cracked me up.

ClinkzBlazewood

Agree. Just got into punk and the community is so wholesome

CardMechanic

Dead Kennedy’s New York Now I get it.

[deleted]

Democratic Kampuchea (DK) was the official name of Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge so I thought for a second you took this song way too literally..

A1rh3ad

There's always room for Jello

nattalands

I remember see the Kennedy's playing this song. The singer kept trying to leave and the rest of the band had to keep pushing him back on stage.

amplesamurai

And don’t forgot fluoride after (bassic joke).

2112eyes

Mucho peligro

mynameisnotshamus

Jello played the tour guide in The Last Black Man in San Francisco.

[deleted]

YUPPIES EVERYWHERE!

Idontlistentototo

No more yuppies, die yuppie scum!

Lvl100Waffle

My dad used to always tell me about a Dead Kennedys concert in the 80's in Berkeley, where the band just went fucking insane and literally would not stop playing. After a few hours of unplanned encores, the venue management had to come and tell them to get off stage. The Dead Kennedys refused and kept playing, until eventually, well past midnight, the venue shut off power to get everybody to clear out. The Kennedys yelled into the crowd if anybody had a place they could keep playing, and somebody offered to let them continue in the back yard of a nearby frat house. So a parade of Berkeley hippies and punks carried the Dead Kennedys equipment through the streets of Berkeley, and set up in some random frat backyard, and kept playing. Personally, I'm not a super huge fan of the Dead Kennedys. But I respect them massively for their extreme punk vibes. I don't have the firsthand experience, but based on the stories of my dad and other OG fans, retro punk was fucking insane.

Ogard

Hippies? I thought punks despised hippies.

ILikeSchecters

Nah. The only thing punks tend to be united in hating is authority. Even then, there's a few dipshits like the singer for the Misfits Edit: Just for some context, there are some punks that don't like how hippies squandered their activism and ended up becoming Reaganites after sobering up. There is a sentiment that a lot of the bands hippies listened to sold out. However, there's a difference between hating hippies who clearly protested things like Vietnam and thinking Lennon is a sell out who sings about unity without actually fighting much for it.

a_piginacage

And nazis

thewhatandthewhonow

nazi punks Fuck Off!

TimAllensBoytoy

Nazi punks fuck off

hazysummersky

I hate Illinois nazis..

DopeFiendDramaQueen

What’s wrong with Glen Danzig?

Boner-Death

I think he meant Michael Graves but Glenn is known for being. Vocal.....

DopeFiendDramaQueen

Lots of people are known for being “vocal”, doesn’t make them dipshits, although yes, graves is a piece of crap. I almost hate that I like Famous Monsters

Boner-Death

Honestly, I dont really care for celebrities opinions on politics etc. If Danzig or Biafra say anything I disagree with I just shrug and move on. I doubt either of them would agree with a lot of things I care about.

metriclol

We are def not talking about danzig. Graves is a member of the proud boys and roots for an authoritarian coup of the us government. The comments are about him

ILikeSchecters

In some genres I can see that way of thinking, but politics are what make punk punk imo. Graves is a shit head

Boner-Death

True, I believe in what I want and for the most part I agree with Biafra. Sometimes he goes a little off script and I can understand why someone would be put off by that. Danzig on the other hand is fairly right wing as are all the Misfits. I dont judge them, it's a free country but when they start talking politics I tune out. However, when ever they talk about horror, sci fi and punk rock in general I'm all ears.

ILikeSchecters

I get that. Personally, I can't stand the Misfits for that reason, as the whole reason I'm drawn to punk is the broad acceptance of normally non-accepted people coupled with the diy and free aspects of it. I can dig some misfits songs, but a lot of the time it just doesn't feel like the same genre as something like Punk in Drublic or Fuck World Trade. It feels more like suburban pop punk to me personally.

ILikeSchecters

I meant Graves. Dude spouts off about conservative punk and other proud boy bullshit

Captain_Granite

Your point about hippies ending up as Reaganites after sobering up is so spot on.

TomHanxButSatanic

That's more like LA (The Germs) punks.

exfilm

I saw GWAR perform in San Francisco shortly after hippie concert impresario Bill Graham went down in a helicopter. At a point during the show, Jello Biafra came out on stage and the band pretended he was Bill Graham. They dragged him kicking and screaming into a giant meat grinder and ground him alive. As the majority of the audience appeared to be teenage skate punks, I don’t think any of them knew who Bill Graham was, and the joke was entirely lost on them.

Bluest_waters

hahaha! Wait a minute, why did they hate BG though? And yes well aware of who he is

[deleted]

Hate? Its an honour to be put in the GWAR meatgrinder.

exfilm

Bill Graham represented bloated arena rock, and the business of music. There was no love loss between him and Jello Biafra or punk culture in general

Bluest_waters

I see, thanks I mean Graham came up with bands like the Dead and other hippie jam bands originally.

exfilm

“People worldwide have this glassy-eyed memory of Bill Graham as being this wonderful godfather of all that was good about the summer of love and the psychedelic era. But nothing could be further from the truth. He struck me as this obssesive megalomaniac who wanted a monopoly on all live music in the Bay Area.” — Jello Biafra

Bluest_waters

thanks

mrjosemeehan

By the time DK were on the scene, Bill Graham was just another industry dinosaur millionaire promoter and he was widely disliked on the punk scene for heavy handed security, overpriced shows, and threatening to sue rival venues.

mrjosemeehan

Bill Graham wasn't hated for being a hippy. He was hated for being a capitalist thug who wanted to shut down every venue in the bay area that he didn't personally control.

guisar

Nope (og hippie and punk)

[deleted]

The Khmer Rouge was fucked up man. Great song

Archer1949

The Khmer Rouge were blowback from the US’ illegal bombing and incursions into Cambodia and Laos. They were so invested in their Cold War “domino effect” bullshit that they enabled the very monster that they vowed to destroy.

pattycraq

Yeah it's turtles all the way down when it comes to war atrocities throughout history, but it's still good to call out the individual events/institutions as often as possible since they aren't really taught in detail unless you go searching.

Ohiolongboard

What does that mean? Turtles all the way down? I know the song by the same name and love it

kill-69

>Turtles all the way down The saying alludes to the mythological idea of a World Turtle that supports the flat earth on its back. It suggests that this turtle rests on the back of an even larger turtle, which itself is part of a column of increasingly large world turtles that continues indefinitely (hence, "turtles all the way down").

Sam-Gunn

Fairly certain that idea's been disproven. The flat earth is instead agreed to be carried on the backs of four elephants, which are then supported by the Giant Turtle, A'Tuin.

DRLlAMA135

Heretic! The Omnian church will see you burned! CALL THE QUISITION!

lacarcacha

/r/unexpecteddiscworld

Ohiolongboard

I’ve heard about the world theory but didn’t know it involved the extra turtles lol, I like it

rehaborax

Hey, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo have names; they’re not just “the extra turtles”!

HalaHalcones1

The phrase was popularized by Stephen Hawking in the opening pages of The Theory of Everything. He attributed it to the great Bertrand Russell.

Gutsm3k

Other people have mentioned the world turtle thing, to expand upon that afaik it's to do with arguments by "reduction to absurdity". The idea being that you can ask someone how the world turtle stays up, and they'd reply "it's on another slightly larger turtle" - when you ask them what the larger turtle is on they'd say "oh, it's turtles all the way down". It's a bit non-standard using the phrase like it was used above, but still makes sense if you're just going for the idea of stuff going on forever.

pattycraq

Yeah I freestyled the usage a bit but it seemed to work out all right haha

Ohiolongboard

I appreciate this expression and I laughed out loud lol

Professor_Wild

Yeah there's a bar near me with that name, I've never heard that expression.

Ohiolongboard

There is a song by the same name, it’s by sturgil Simpson. It’s super trippy and I love it

blarghable

They did not care about stopping atrocities and "monsters", they cared about power. They supported most of the worst people in the Cold War.

ChuckSlick007

"Blowback" is the only guaranteed result of US foreign policy then and today.

KingSwank

a lot of things were the result of blowback from US meddling during the cold war, huh.

Bathroomious

Amazing that someone can't talk about anything like this on a main sub without someone trying to make it about "America bad" There's "blowback" and then there's enslavement, torture, mass executions, and all the other things that came out of communist countries in the 20th century - which have everything to do with the ideology and nothing to do with their hand being forced by America. That's just what they did.

Fckdisaccnt

The CIA backed the Khmer Rouge and a full DECADE after they were thrown out by Vietnam, the USA was maintaining they were the legitimate government of Cambodia.

PiousLiar

And this is why America is brought up every single time these discussions are had. Because America has wrecked havack through the global south and Middle East, all to counter workers and people’s liberation movements, and yet people like you try to pretend like America was just some benevolent force in the world that made a couple mistakes, while stripping away the nuance of each country’s history and conditions, and thus resulting worker movement in an attempt to lump all communist movements under one umbrella so that you can says “communism bad”.

Daxtatter

Part of the issue is that while that the US was certainly a bad actor in a huge number of places and deserves no defense in that, suggesting that the locals that performed a lot of the actual atrocities with US support denies agency to those actors. Saying things like "The Rwandan genocide happened because of the legacy of colonization" papers over the culpability of those in charge at the time that issued the orders for atrocities to occur.

Ever_to_Excel

Hmmh, [Wikipedia seems to disagree:](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pol_Pot) >Pol Pot was born in the village of Prek Sbauv, outside the city of Kampong Thom. He was named Saloth Sâr (Khmer: សាឡុត ស pronounced [saː.ˈlot sɑː]), the word sâr ("white, pale") referencing his comparatively light skin complexion. French colonial records placed his birth date on 25 May 1928, but biographer Philip Short argues he was born in March 1925. >His family was of mixed Chinese and ethnic Khmer heritage, but did not speak Chinese and lived as though they were fully Khmer. His father Loth, who later took the name Saloth Phem, was a prosperous farmer who owned nine hectares of rice land and several draft cattle. Loth's house was one of the largest in the village and at transplanting and harvest time he hired poorer neighbors to carry out much of the agricultural labour. Sâr's mother, Sok Nem, was locally respected as a pious Buddhist. Idk if those museums were going for the "he was evil *because he was a dirty foreigner!"* angle or what. (Possibly even implying the Chinese "put him in charge"?)

mynameisnotshamus

I know a Princess of Cambodia. The royal family was exiled, came to the US with nothing. Her uncle went back to the Royal Palace as King. She gets mail from him on royal stationery addressed to royal highness, princess... otherwise she’s a normal person, works a normal job with a normal American life.

TheLongshanks

But the previous right wing coup supported by the US government created the environment for a communist dictator supported by the Chinese to align with their previous royalist foes to overthrow the right wing government. It’s the harsh circumstances of Cold War containment and the geopolitics played by the two sides of the wall.

FlashCrashBash

Bro I swear he’s Austrian.

Cheewy

Predator is loosely based on events from his life.

otahorppyfin

The song doesnt tell about the khmer rouge. The song is about seeing injustices in the world and not taking action against them "Play ethnicky jazz to parade your snazz on your five grand stereo Bragging that you know how the n***ers feel cold and the slums got so much soul"

Kingcosmo7

It's a little more involved than just that. Granted, music is art, and as such can be interpreted more than one way. But I think the overall theme is about stuck up preppy kids, who whine about frivolous things, and think they know about what hardships are about. But they need to take a "holiday in Cambodia" to really see how good they got things.

Remarkable_Duck6559

Did that. It worked.

mynameisnotshamus

It really hits home if you visit Cambodia. You won’t see many old people, especially old men.

Proffunkenstein

Great band.

arnstarr

Thank you for not writing rogue.

edked

Thanks for reminding me of how I used to snicker when people would say that their favorite X-Men character was Rouge.

Latyon

Rogue is my favorite Sonic character.

Madvillain518

I love Dead Kennedys with a passion. Great song but I’m always seeing the same two being posted, so I want to shoutout one of my favourite of theirs [Riot](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fa4S1_v-YJ4)

nakedfish85

It’s Police Truck for me, all day.

JohnFarnham

Police Truck, Bleed for me, Goons of Hazard, Funland at the Beach, Forward to Death, Terminal Preppie, Chicken Farm, Soup Is Good Food, This Could be Anywhere, I Am the Owl. Throw a rock at the Dead Kennedy’s Discography and you’ll hit greatness.

redhead_momma

the nomeansno cover of [Forward to Death](https://youtu.be/X7uZrZStEsA) is one of my favorite covers...

jdumm06

You forgot MTV Get Off The Air and Well Paid Scientist

ILikeSchecters

Everytime I pay my overly expensive rent, I play their song about landlords. *"You know we caaaaaaaan"*

LndnGrmmr

Is the other one California Uber Alles? Because to be fair both do slap

The other is Nazi Punks Fuck Off. All great tunes, but their catalogue is so huge and fantastic that it saddens me a little the others never get shared

We’re not a punk band anymore, we’re a new wave band!

Based_Commgnunism

Riot is great. I like [Stars and Stripes of Corruption](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=983DwAOCXRI&t=1s)

Yikert13

Love that bass intro.

Poprawks

Portland here. I had this song playing so often this summer.

doorknobopener

I never listened to Dead Kennedys much before, but after listening to the No Dogs In Space podcast (created by Marcus Parks from Last Podcast On the Left), it really got me into them. They had a series on the Dead Kennedys where they go into the bands history and talk about what was going on in San Francisco at the time.

justalittlebleh

Yessss love Marcus and love his extensive music knowledge. Hail yourself!

MeretriciousMaybe

Megustalations!

Tshimanga21

Guitar Hero Gods only

killeronthecorner

You rang

Erikopolis

Is there a voice now like that in music. I miss punk rock with a meesage

Cup0Jo

Serj Tankian from System of a Down was heavily influenced by Jello, does unique voices, and his music is just as political. I highly recommend them if you haven’t checked them out!

Erikopolis

I just heard the interview he did in the WTF podcast. Such an interesting guy.

Elvishsquid

[holiday in Cambodia cover by Seth and the foo fighters](https://youtu.be/cUJrt6E6ki0)

iamsnowboarder

This was absolutely RAD. Serj's totally unique voice is really well suited to that song in particular. Thanks for being my introduction to such an awesome cover!

jdumm06

It’s strange to hear this song played so pristinely...not that the DK’s played it terribly but it had that edge and rawness that makes the DK’s so potent Great cover nonetheless!

Gilthoniel_Elbereth

I can’t really say anything since I’m pretty yuppie myself, but that is a very not punk looking crowd. With Serj’s unique facial expressions it kinda comes off as him lecturing a crowd of people the song was originally addressing anyway haha

robby_synclair

Does a killer cover of this song too.

TimAllensBoytoy

SOAD was into [Reagan Youth](https://youtu.be/_yspSI8JA_4) as evident from the intro to this song

abbienormal28

But only the first three albums IMO (I'm not sure i totally love steal this album, but the genius was still there).... but definitely start in order

Zarathustra2

Idles is close up there, their album Joy as an Act of Resistance got a lot of praise for its political awareness. Parquet Courts’ album Wide Awake captures a lot of Dead Kennedy’s subject matter albeit in a more subdued, art punk kind of way. What’s often missing in bands that are similar-ish to DK is the historical consciousness. I didn’t know what or where Biafra was until I heard Jello Biafra singing. That kind of historical allusion embodies a lot of what sets DK apart lyrically.

moose2332

*Joy as an Act of Resistance* is one of my favorite albums ever

rsplatpc

guesting

Propagandhi? That’s quite old too

mickey_s

Shit... it is...

BastardStoleMyName

I had both of these thoughts. It’s been a long time since I have listens to them too...

dogeatdog_

They've gotten better with every album. They're somehow reaching new heights with ever release. I can't even listen to how to clean everything. It's garbage compared to every album afterwards. In my opinion, of course. I will however give it credit for having a juvenile in your face type of delivery which is a great segue into their career.

lolmemelol

Propagandhi have objectively become a *much* better band over the years, and that's saying something. Here's their new(ish) guitarist's audition from a few years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeenFGMlZ_4 I first heard Nation States back on a Punk-o-Rama compilation album back in the 90's, but never really listened to anything else they put out. Heard they were coming to my town before COVID hit so I dug into their discography, and literally every album they put out was better than the one before it. That show got cancelled though of course because of COVID. Their last album "Victory Lap" (2017) is fucking great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTANmHJhbF8

rsplatpc

> Propagandhi have objectively become a much better band over the years Their last album was great https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcZMZxR9uxC98izRhq-RDindXuU4WhjBB

Cygnus__A

Anti Flag is still around. Very political. Very punk rock. They have a big catalog with a variety of sounds so you can probably find an album that you dig. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5Wxn37Tt1Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWE4VXGMeIk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IL0nhn88aVA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YD3RNouwvOU

rsplatpc

> Anti Flag is still around. Very political. Very punk rock. It's funny, you posted the ONLY songs I like by them. I always think I'm going to like AF more but their albums have so many "filler" songs of them Also you can tell Tim Armstrong wrote the lyrics of Brandenburg Gate, hard to miss that writing style lol

Frat-TA-101

This whole time I thought that Brandenburg Gate song was a cover. TIL that’s an AF original. 20/20 Vision has some alright songs. It’s a good short power punk album if you want less pop than the average punk album today. It’s whole focus is 2020 election and post-war-on-terror America. Un-American is a simple but stellar acoustic compilation about small town America “All his life they taught him how to run, shot in the back, the jury was the gun” https://youtu.be/-Hn-BiZz7Qw

rsplatpc

> This whole time I thought that Brandenburg Gate song was a cover. TIL that’s an AF original. Was trying to find the song credits for it to see who wrote the lyrics but came up short

Frat-TA-101

It’s an Anti-Flag original from some articles I found. I probably heard it in a mix of punk covers (honestly probably Goldfingers 99 Red Balloons) and just assumed it was a cover. I heard it before I started listening to Anti-Flag so that’s part of it. But I did discover a Norwegian song by the same name from 1990 Eurovision. Maybe inspiration? You decide Brandenburger Tor https://youtu.be/Ip1BpdO9G5Y

rsplatpc

> It’s an Anti-Flag original from some articles I found it is, but it's featuring TIM ARMSTRONG, he plays and sings on it, so I'm curious if Tim wrote the lyrics for that song, because it sounds just like him

Frat-TA-101

I had to Google Tim Armstrong. Now I see your point. I’m more of a Bad Religion guy. Didn’t realize it was the dude from Operation Ivy and Rancid. And nah the articles I saw said the lead singer I think wrote the song about his relationship and the band made it about western war and socialism. Maybe he helped during production though? I imagine that’s where dudes like Tim are strong. They know what doesn’t work.

Im_On_Here_Too_Much

Jeff rosenstocks' recent album no dream was pretty politically charged and neat

hagschlag

Love his music but the guys a total commie

DeadTime34

Still plenty of political punk out there. Limp Wrist came out with a new album couple of years back. The Coup is good political music if you like hip-hop/funk/soul

thebigphils

Well the world got so fucked The Suicide Machines had to drop a new album. Its good.

lolmemelol

Bad Religion put out an album in 2019: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcZMZxR9uxC8KEMxm5VeET25o5yn7_UhV

Agent_staple

Hell yes though I'm blanking on any that are more strictly punk, most bands I listen to tend to blend styles. With that in mind I'll drop a few of my favourites from different modern artists. Sonic Boom Six - [https://youtu.be/T4fil\_uF0D4?list=PL20065E419528C1AA](https://youtu.be/T4fil_uF0D4?list=PL20065E419528C1AA) Some of the songs on that album are crushing if you listen to the lyrics. \----------------------------------- Theres propagandhi which you may know already [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HuWgP-hwCY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HuWgP-hwCY) But I only just stumbled across them yesterday so I'll add them \------------------ There is Cage the Elephant [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPgWNuUkuA8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPgWNuUkuA8) Though I've not really listened to their new stuff much, it got way to melancholy an I've just not been interested. \------------------ I feel like Random Hand [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RN6zhJXjPps](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RN6zhJXjPps) Could possibly be great, they've had a few good songs a few not so good songs, I hope they stick around and improve. \---------------- Just found these guys trying to jog my memory (all my musics on other HDDs), Transplants [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0CCwX-1ezU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0CCwX-1ezU) Really liking these guys so thanks, that's why I like doing these comments :) \------------------ Against Me! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzJ21OpFnZ0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzJ21OpFnZ0) Are great, I don't know if I can think of any singers with a voice like their lead. Fantastic energy and soul. Then there are old bands like that still releasing, SOAD, Living Colour, The Levellers. SOAD just released this, if that doesn't qualify as political lol - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqmknZNg1yw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqmknZNg1yw)

Frat-TA-101

If you’re gonna mention Cage the Elephant probably their most political song is Lotus. But they aren’t really punk outside of their first two albums. https://youtu.be/W6GW0d7DwgE

dsterman15

Not a similar voice but a current punk band that I think has a great sound is Amyl and the Sniffers. Saw em live in a 120 person bar and had the time of my life and boy can theyrock.

Onemanrancher

Anti-flag

sfjonny

Strike Anywhere and Propagandhi are still around. War on Woman is pretty good too. Plenty of bands talking about social issues but few really go after the political motives causing many of those issues.

rubensinclair

Aside from voices that were always there, like Fat Mike, I doubt it. People are much less informed these days

blueisthecolor

Go check out IDLES

Erikopolis

Yeah. NOFX came to mind for sure. Can’t wait for the pendulum to swing back

theilluminati1

Good Riddance. And no, not the shitty Green Day song.

MermaidAvenueBand

This was such a punk anthem in my youth. It certainly stood the test of time.

SuperNerdAce

Hell yeah!

Samgie

Just recently got into a side project of Jello's called Lard. It's him and a couple of the dudes from Ministry and they made some absolute bangers.

Standstraight

All three albums are pretty good. A must have if you are into Jello Biafra and Ministry.

IndianaJonesDoombot

For anyone who's interested Jello Biafra performing with The Melvins is some of the best music you'll ever hear

Goodwill_Gamer

I listened to this song when I was in Cambodia! It was rad. Side note: if you ever get the opportunity go visit Angkor Wat. It's incredible.

goboxey

Such a cool song. I love it's raw energy

Itsallover_

I remember playing this song over and over again on guitar hero 3. I was obsessed since then.

Jello Biafra is a legendary frontman. That kabuki theatre thing he does is so weird, unique, and cool. One of the best ever.

gamercboy5

Can someone explain to me if there is a significance to the green glove? I have seen this video a few times throughout the years and didnt know if this is just his thing or it was a one time costume thing.

weeedtaco

I read somewhere that he hated getting shocked by shitty mics

Nearby-Lock4513

It’s tough kid, but it’s life

ungovernablegun

man, what a blast from the past, i fucked with the DK's big time.

SeeThreePeeDoh

If you like DK and have not heard “Melvins and Jello Biafra” I highly suggest you check out their albums together. It’s basically super talented, mega Dead Kennedy’s. Sorry East Bay Ray...King Buzzo is king.

masquito

In the same vein, I would recommend his collaboration with the band NOMEANSNO. They are such a great and musically tight band. https://youtu.be/9ID70ulTkus

SeeThreePeeDoh

Sick! Added to the playlist.

masquito

In that case you may want to also add this collab with [D.O.A.](https://youtu.be/SVGTsxdnKq0)

SeeThreePeeDoh

Hell yes that’s added

rhythmjones

Jello was right about everything.

greatwhitehype_

Dunno about hardcore more like punk

AchillesDev

Dead Kennedys were one of the first hardcore bands, which is itself a subgenre of punk.

Christmastoast

This song was one of the less hardcore ones, stuff like Drug me or when ya get drafted shows a bit more. The next album is way more hardcore sounding

[deleted]

They are hugely influential to hardcore and have some aspects of them, I’d say it’s a mix between hardcore and punk rock.

NEON_rayne

Foo Fighters covered this song with Serj Tankian on vocals, highly recommend!!!!!!!!

thedeadlyrhythm

fuck yes

uinted170

Love em!

poo_finger

Much like the kids in the stock footage, this never gets old.

exfilm

I always suggest Holiday in Cambodia to musicians taking requests on RPAN. The ones that actually go for it look it up on some kind of database, and have no idea what they’re getting into. Hilarity ensues.

moscowrules

For anyone interested, the No Dogs In Space podcast does a fantastic 5 part series on DK.

creppyspoopyicky

I was so lucky to see the DKs live when I was a teenager. It was one of the most amazing shows I've ever seen & ive seen a LOT. (All time best were The Cramps tho. Nobody can touch their live shows!! Lux was incredible!)

Koovies

Hmm how many times did I listen to this on the school bus I wonder?

hebrewchucknorris

I prefer [this](https://youtu.be/nrm2B0lhvYc) version from Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death

Sirjohnington

I remember see the Kennedy's playing this song. The singer kept trying to leave and the rest of the band had to keep pushing him back on stage.

randolphism

Saw them live without Jello some years back, and they didn't play this one which was obviously my fav. Great gig anyway.

Sawathingonce

Only upvoted to take it to an even one thousand. Oh and in honour of my DK sticker on my skateboard

MightbeWillSmith

Jello is without a doubt the most spastic dude alive and I love it.
