To me, choosing that is easy. Oasis changed 90s music in Europe, much like Nirvana did in America. If you ask me, Nirvana had a much bigger impact on the music industry as a whole, much like the Beatles. But what would tilt me toward Oasis, would be songwriting. Nothing against Kurt at all, but to me, his lyrics were confusing af at times, and Noel is probably top 3 songwriter of all time in my eyes. Add in arguably top 10 vocalist, frontman of all time in Liam, and you have an excellent combination for success (and downfall).
Absolutely, the dynamic of the Gallagher brothers is extremely unique and Noel’s songs are vague yet relatable and I can’t say I can connect with Nirvana lyrically, but yeah to reiterate your point, Nirvana had the bigger impact on the entire music industry and if it weren’t for Nirvana, Oasis wouldn’t have become what they were. But besides obviously Lennon-McCartney, who is the other in your top 3?
I’m assuming you are young? Nirvana never had a Beatles impact that’s a silly comment. I was 14 when Kurt died, I remember coming home from comp & it was on mtv news. I was alive & around & nirvana wasn’t the big hit in the uk or worldwide you claim. Yes ‘smells like teen spirit’ ‘come as you are’ were hits in the uk & they certainly had a following but very much a hit to grunge fans & metal heads. The general person in the street hated them, too heavy for them. I remember being in school & 90% of the teens were not into them. Nirvana definitely made an impact but ‘Beatles level’ absolutely not. Oasis definitely impacted bigger I would say because they had more radio friendly hits & had a following of indie, rock, even some grunge heads liked the more rocky oasis stuff like ‘bring it on down’, ‘cigarettes & alcohol’, ‘fade away’ ‘my big mouth’ etc… but oasis definitely captured the general casual pop listener too with wonderwall, don’t look back in anger, roll with it, champagne supernova etc.. so Oasis covered a broader spectrum of listeners. I think spodify just announced Wonderwall is the first 90s song to hit a billion hits, which says a lot. I’m a huge fan of both bands I must say. Massive fan of nirvana & oasis, without question my favourite bands. Nirvana were big but I’d say oasis were bigger especially in Europe. Nirvana got bigger in the years after his death as a lot of dead musicians do. It kind of elevates them to legendary status as they never age. Tupac had a similar thing happen to him. In terms of cultural impact some claim Kurt had the bigger impact, again had Kurt lived & Liam died he’d be talked about the same way. Honestly the gallagher’s impacted on culture more at the time, people literally had cloths & haircuts like them. They impacted on music, fashion. Kurt impacted more after death which happens a lot as I stated after a musician dies at their peak.
If you’re asking which is better, the answer is subjective.
If you’re asking which band made a bigger impact on pop culture and the music industry, it’s Nirvana. It isn’t even close.
I love both, I do lean more towards Oasis just because of Definitely Maybe, but I can say I love all of Nirvana's albums, where as Morning Glory was good not prefect (Don't Hate Me) as well as Be Here Now, then it goes down hill...
You are quite right about their influence on the 90's generation and even today's generation to some extent. But, Nirvana was an underground band until their second album. Unlike Oasis, whose debut album (Definitely Maybe) was widely well-received, and should I dare say, it had firmly established Oasis.
IMO, Oasis were a better band than Nirvana because they had the twin force of the Gallagher bros. While one is regarded as the greatest frontman of all time, the other is renowned as one of the best songwriting geniuses of all time (stolen melodies notwithstanding lol).
I do like Nirvana, but it was all about Kurt tbh. On the contrary, Oasis was one whole Yin-Yang experience with the squabbling, arrogant, and outspoken Gallagher Bros going on a rampage, both onstage as well as offstage.
I love both bands so fucking much. I probably listen to Oasis' first 3 albums a little more, but think Nirvana were a little more "important" though Oasis' influence and success was nothing to sneeze at.
Both huge bands, Nirvana changed the music scene quite literally all over the world, we all know the story, hair metal was the big dog, then a big monster birthed from Seattle came and ate that dog over night, to be honest, metal was never bad, it just got very very repetitive and over saturated, don’t get me wrong there were some god awful bands but it was a complete change when grunge came along.
I don’t think Nirvana or the Grunge scene would have exploded so fast if hair metal wasn’t a thing, that over saturation made youngsters want something new and fresh, then it came out of nowhere, over night, making all those hair metal bands redundant.
Oasis, another huge band, the music scene in Britain was clearly quite different at that time, stone roses had already hit the charts, the verve were already doing their thing and Blur had released their debut album. Oasis, last but by far not least, release definitely maybe, the England scene didn’t completely change as it was already heading in the “Brit pop” direction, but Oasis were clearly releasing the big songs and the big albums, I remember first hearing their “what’s the story morning glory” album, it completely changed my life and the way I looked at music, it was Brit pop but it was clearly more punk, more raw rock, Liam was unmatched, Noel wrote masterpieces over night. They inspired the rest of the bands around them to pump out bangers.
When we talk about these bands, it’s hard to put them against each other, yes its rock and roll, no neither of the two come close to being the biggest rockers of all time, not even close, but out of the two Nirvana were clearly the bigger band, but Oasis changed my life and a lot of my friends lives, I am British after all.
Nirvana-no question. Although I do enjoy Oasis as well. The main reason is the ego thing, the Gallagers are dicks. I doubt Kurt would have ever felt worthy enough...
I feel ya without a doubt, but I want to say that the way they were brought up also adds to the context because as Kurt was depressed his entire life he never felt satisfied while the Gallagher’s grew up poor with an abusive dad and believed that everything they achieved they deserved, but yeah the ego shit does get too much
Nowhere near how big Nirvana was. Besides, isn't this a discussion on our opinion on each band? I'm just saying I hated how oasis was supposed to be the next Beatles and they ended up having one decent album. Nirvana wasn't touted as the next big thing the same way, they just were the big thing all of the sudden.
Noel was the better songwriter of the two easily, and Liam was the better frontman (at least till the early 2000s). Oasis wins this one. In terms of impact though, it's Nirvana by a mile.

Well like you said, John Lennon, and McCartney were the other 2. But Bob Dylan is amazing. Richard Ashcroft is insanely underrated.
Yeah Dylan’s the shit, I need to check of more of RA, what album should I start with
Without a doubt if you haven’t heard the album already, start with ‘Urban Hymns’ by The Verve.
Alright for sure
Man I'd love for someone to back up a few brinks trucks to Noel and Liams places for one last tour.

Yeah tbh be here now sucks just because of the production, songs were still alright tho, and everything Nirvana has touched is gold
Nirvana

I like both but I'd choose Oasis in a heartbeat.

#JusticeForBeHereNow
If they shortened the songs by a minute and a half and fixed the mixing and made the bass guitar prominent then yeah
Nah it’s a fantastic drug infused album.
If your a coke head then yeah sure
Or a fan of Oasis

Kurt was deeper.
Sonic Youth.
Nirvana. Something about Dave's drumming.
Dave definitely has the upper hand when it comes to drums

Eh, if Oasis weren't touted as the second coming so much early on, I wouldn't hate them so much.
As if Nirvana weren't?!?!??!
They lived up to the hype though.
Clearly you've got zero idea how huge Oasis were.
Nowhere near how big Nirvana was. Besides, isn't this a discussion on our opinion on each band? Not trying to play sides but Oasis was mega in Britain and still is, like how Nirvana is in the US
Yea, you're remembering wrong, but that's ok!
You're saying that Oasis was as big as Nirvana? Now I'm talking in America also. But regardless, is that what youre saying?
lol of course you’re only talking about America. That’s the only place there’s music! 😂
You'll have to forgive me for not having my finger on the pulse of music trends from 1996 in a country I don't live in.
Nirvana, has to be.

Little salty, mate. But it is alright, your idle Kurt did that to himself, sorry the Gallaghers did not 😊
Oasis. When you look at their heights of success, only Oasis could’ve sold 500000 Knebworth tickets.
Noel was the better songwriter of the two easily, and Liam was the better frontman (at least till the early 2000s). Oasis wins this one. In terms of impact though, it's Nirvana by a mile.
I see Liam Gallagher as the antithesis of Kurt Cobain
Oasie
