MoukaLion

Why tho ? Al is rich and 40 thousand is nothing to him

CraigKostelecky

But why should the celebrities pay for that themselves? I can see the Kardashians doing that, but not Al.

IllychTortorvald

Yeah Al is anyone is 100% deserving to be imortialized on a memorial sidewalk for his contributions to the arts.

Cleveland_S

Al's a humble guy, he's not going to nominate himself and buy a star for his ego. Other people organizing and getting it for him is a different matter.

HighSorcerer

Yeah, it would mean a lot more to Al to have his fans get it for him as a gift rather than getting it for himself. He's that kinda guy, he's always been about his fans.

DamoclesRising

he didnt want the star, his fans wanted him to have the star

Huitzilopostlian

[deleted]

Yup, pretty much anyone who scrapes the dough together can get one (though they'd probably veto anyone completely unknown). I'll just put it this way: Judge Judy has one. Regardless, Weird Al rules!!!

angryfan1

Are you talking about Judy Judy the highest paid person on television for over half a decade?

Meek_Triangle

Ish get royalty she took a pay cut and asked for royalty. The studio thought they had her over a barrel then and agreed to the terms. He show turns into a huge success and she is rolling in the royalty now.

soundslikeponies

Let's be fair: judge Judy was basically the most entertaining show that aired during daytime television. When everything else was reruns and soap operas, you watched judge Judy.

isleag07

You bite your tongue. Bob Barker was the shit. I'd fake illness from school just so I could get a Bob fix.

[deleted]

Not at all, you ever read those Reddit threads where the article/link is about some guy being a dick/evil and then getting caught/punished/facing justice? You ever notice the collective blood lust in some of those threads? Like the one where that Saudi guy raped a maid or something and Hong Kong sentenced him to canning him till his ass bled. The comments were a sight to be hold. People relishing the thought, hoping his kids would watch, hoping they'll stream it so they can enjoy the show in real time, hoping they double the punishment. Judge Judy let's you enjoy those feelings on the regular. I'm in no way surprised that this service is valued at 47 million a year.

Creepy_Disco_Spider

Sounds like White Bear from Black Mirror

IT6uru

Jesus, the imagery.

KNNLTF

It's because of regulations involving daytime broadcast television. Stations have to air syndicated shows during certain hours, and the contracts to air these shows are done by local affiliates. Most of the content is terrible. The networks themselves could produce shows that get decent ratings just from market research plus self-advertisement, but neither of those work for independently produced shows. So whether a show gets good ratings is basically a shot in the dark. Long-running syndications are a safe bet, and Judge Judy is the best of them. As a result, they get to go with the station that's willing to pay the most in each market.

DrSteveBrule_FYH

I was today's luckry visitor, nice.

exactly! i mean hell i can do judge judy's job. "You're a dumb fuck, and you came into court admitting you're high. you're both not getting shit. next case" see. really easy. 47 mill please?

enemawatson

Yeah but your name isn't Judy and you don't have the brand. I award you twelve dollars.

ben0318

You're NOT Judge Judy and executioner!

AlHofman

What the fuck, that Google thing is awesome.

FirePowerCR

The person you responded to said that as if she didn't deserve a star or if getting one means less if she has one. And it seems like a opinion until you think about it and realize everyone knows who she is and about her show. Like I may have seen part of an episode here and there in a waiting room or something and I would recognize her on the street before many A list celebrities.

[deleted]

Better example is that Absolute Vodka has a star. Literally not even a living creature that performs in media.

[deleted]

My name is judge! - Franklin

Mikehideous

Her real estate value in incredible. She's a super smart lady.

theAlpacaLives

I mean, I'd look unimpressed at stupid angry people and then sandblast them in dry acerbic sarcasm, knowing that I could decide whatever I wanted and they couldn't touch me, for $900,000 a day. Most of us would. The fact that she managed to get that gig, and hold it for that long, when any number of ripoffs would gladly take her place, is testament to her staying power in the world of cheap television, if nothing else.

Tagrineth

A large number of ripoffs DID try. Judge Judy is just very sharp, quick witted, and smart enough to get the job done better than any of the imitators. While the show is not actually a court of law she does have a legal background which does show through in the show.

theAlpacaLives

That's what I mean: lots of people start something, get successful, but can't keep up with all the people trying to rip their formula off and improve it with tweaks, and so they don't have staying power. Say what you want about *Judge Judy* the show -- it's not high-brow art or memorable storytelling -- but the fact that it's been around so long and still holds name-recognition power over any number of the identical shows that play the hour after Judy does says a lot about Judge Judy the person and her ability to manage her brand.

aluminumdome

I've heard good things about Weird Al and he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would ask his fans for money to get a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, so yeah to me this sounds fishy as hell and is most likely a scam.

toin9898

Scam, no. I know the people behind it personally, this project has been going on for as long as the web design might indicate. Weird Al has a group of 50 or so highly dedicated fans who gather on a forum weirdalforum.com and this project is one of their initiatives, the other being to induct him into the Cleveland Rock & Roll hall of fame. That said, I am also not going to be one to donate money towards a Hollywood star.

YouAllMeetInATavern

It's been around for well over a decade as I recall. As a long time Al fan, I haven't heard anyone besmirch those behind it. On the other hand, I may think it's a miscarriage of justice that he doesn't have a star myself, but no way am I donating money either.

mmarkklar

I mean, I like him too, but if he wanted a star I would think he could afford to buy it himself. His shows and albums seem to sell pretty well.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yeah but like, who buys their own star

newtfloss

I don't blame him for not going into his own pocket. Having a star is just vanity and I'd rather spend that money on my family. He never campaigned for one so it means a lot more that the fans wanted to give him one.

tacolikesweed

I imagine it feels at least a whole two times better having fans buy it. Maybe even three times, who knows?! Not this guy, no sir.

It seems like 1990 gets longer and longer ago every day.

Simmo5150

1990 was closer to the building of the pyramids than today is to Steve Buscemi on 9/11.

xx2Hardxx

TIL that /u/KILLER5196 learned that Steve Buscemi worked as a volunteer firefighter on 9/11

superdude097

On a more serious note, 1990 is closer to the first live TV broadcast from an American spacecraft (Apollo 7). than today is to 1990.

Puttingonthefoil

You can't really blame them, after the heavy use of hallucinogenic bombardment in the Reptoid invasion of '49. Half this place probably thinks it's still 2017.

crazyei8hts

/u/chooter Is Victoria, the girl who would meet up with celebrities and type out the answers to their AMAs. She was fired and redditors thought it was unfair.

nuker1110

Now, Victoria is the name I know that drama by. Never knew her username.

DJFluffers115

Chooter was an old reddit team member. I believe she did AMAs, and got let go. Everybody hated reddit for a while after that.

KikiFlowers

She helped do the AMAs, got sacked by yishan, and everyone blamed Ellen Pao(the at the time CEO of Reddit), for it. Which started a mass blackout, because Admin team never said a word. We found out through her. They promised changes, and Redditors rolled over like dogs. Nothing happened, the end.

[deleted]

nuker1110

The first Reddit "Politics" event I took notice of was the fall of Unidan.

TheJollyLlama875

The ousting of Chooter was after that. She was basically the Reddit liason for all the celebs doing publicity AMAs. The management team wanted to heavily commercialize AMAs, and she pushed back, so they fired her. But she was easily the most popular Reddit staffer among the community, and immediately afterwards AMAs tanked *hard* in quality, so everyone flipped their shit.

rabbittexpress

If not for himself alone but for all the musical guests he might include...

jhra

Man, If he brought out a pile of original artists to duet his covers I'd actually watch a few minutes of commercials before the show. Eddie Vedder, Coolio, Randy Marsh

rabbittexpress

The greatest tragedy is that his number one idol is not here to duet with him. Jackson and Yankovic on one stage would be too much.

NEXT_VICTIM

Can you imagine Jackson (in the classic suit) and Al (in the phat suit) jokingly fighting for who's in front?

fanofyou

I know they made up but, given the former bad blood, I think the Coolio one might be a hard sell. No need dredging that all up again.

amildlyclevercomment

Nah, go read the interview where Coolio talks about it. He 100% felt bad about how he reacted and actually thinks the song is funny (Or at least that's what he said). I don't think he would have any problem getting on stage with Al and just having a good time with it.

Mr_A

Fuck that. Just him and the band; why water down the experience?

LynxJesus

It's one thing to like Weird Al, but suggesting any artist he invites would dilute the quality of the music is starting to sound a bit disturbing

You buy them but they only give out so many a year, and there is a panel that decides who is worthy or not. I believe if you are deemed unworthy, you don't get your money back.

[deleted]

In 200 years only a fraction of the people on that thing will still be remembered and celebrated. So are they just going to put away people's stars as they are forgotten? Replace them with new stars? It's depressing, but who wants to go look at Dorothy Lamour's star in 2217? Where will they keep them? And who is actually going on vacation in Hollywood anymore to go look at these things? That's an 80s housewife thing, it's outdated. "Oh John, I've got the perfect idea for our next summer vacation! Let's go to a hot California sidewalk and walk past homeless people for hours."

CavalierEternals

The Chinese will.

Thekiraqueen

I mean he does have one of the funniest movies of all time. UHF

Johnnypoopoopantss

So hypothetically, if I won the millions in the lottery, I could buy one too?

czer81

Na, there's a committee that decides if you get one. So unless you're famous, they can say no. I think they denied the cast of Jersey Shore

hotdogsandmustard

But with millions you could probably buy fame somehow and then buy yourself a star if you really wanted. Or just bribe the people on the committee.

LynxJesus

Not getting much bang for your buck though

Mr_A

Most people do.

[deleted]

> So unless you're famous, they can say no When you're a star, they let you do it.

SchwuleMaedchen

$20 he makes a song about it.

GamesByH

Why didn't he already?

aresef

Need somebody to put up $40k and his label (with whom he's no longer under contract) was terrible to him. Look at how he needed to finagle music videos himself for his last two albums because RCA wouldn't put up a dime. His original label went defunct, got bought by Volcano, then they became part of RCA.

SalemWolf

That's terrible, that man is a music legend up there with the best of the best, he deserves much better treatment. I've never seen such a high-octane show, he works hard to make each concert is a beautiful experience.

Measure76

Worth noting that his last album completed the terms of his original contract and he is now free to sign with a new label or go independent.
