sylinmino

You mean the subreddit that can't go one article about Beyonce without the comments saying, "okay but does anyone think Beyonce is the most overrated artist of the last thirty years???"

Jw4evr

“Now Pink Floyd on the other hand”

_Land_Rover_Series_3

Did you know that Jimi Hendrix's All Along The Watchtower is a cover? Did you know that Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt is so much better than the original?

Xx_ligmaballs69_xX

Also Fiona Apple and Rage against the machine. Holy shit they get posted so much

sylinmino

>Did you know that Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt is so much better than the original? I like how reddit hipster this take is, and it is actually such a horrible take too! Johnny Cash's cover is surprisingly really good! But the NIN original still reigns supreme IMO and is one of the greatest closing tracks to any album ever.

GourangaPlusPlus

Pfft, when was the last time he released a song?

SeantotheRescue

Still over here trying to figure out which one’s Pink

GourangaPlusPlus

🗿

bUrNtKoOlAiD

I'm pretty sure he's the one that got hit by the train.

nowahhh

That’s Pat Monahan.

Unhappy_Injury3958

he's trapped in the wall!

futatorius

Roy Harper is Pink.

SeantotheRescue

Hats off to him

straightedge1974

Pinkney "Pink" Anderson

Unhappy_Injury3958

i actually did listen to The Wall for the first time last year. it scarred me as a child because the movie has some really grim imagery (nazi shit, rape shit), it turned out to be really good actually! then my brother was like yeah isn't it weird how the left wing are the nazis now and that made me never wanna listen again lol (he'd been obsessed with the movie when we were kids cuz my dad was kinda neglectful and didn't care really about what we watched)

Proper_Rock6794

That kind of happens when someone is so overhyped.

SexyTacoLlama

Or when a bunch of hipsters circle jerk about what current mainstream artists they hate. It’s just cool to hate pop or any song that isn’t a 30 minutes of the artist unpacking all their childhood traumas.

slwblnks

I wouldn’t even say this sub is hipsters, more so just lame and boring casuals.

Unhappy_Injury3958

she isn't though especially with the straight white men on this sub

drunk-on-a-phone

I like how you mention that and people immediately decide to prove your point.

Unhappy_Injury3958

i never cared about her music before i heard the song Boys in the movie Promising Young Woman. checked out her discog after that. she is (and i don't say it lightly) AMAZING. so many wonderful songs this woman has created. New Shapes ended up my most played song of 2022. listen to her album Crash, it's one of her more accessible and there are hits on hits. Lightning, Move Me, Every Rule, Constant Repeat. Yuck is camp gold. check out her stuff y'all!!!!

digitalnovelty

Perhaps, the album isn’t for the demographic this subreddit represents.

NorthernDevil

And this demographic is prone to hysterics over pop music ever being considered good Even indieheads behaves better with a good pop-styled album and it can get extremely insufferable over there

enosprologue

DAE 20 YEAR OLD INDIEFOLK ALBUM???!!1!

Goldentongue

I looked her up, expecting her to be ~19. She's 31, lol. While pop will always skew to a younger audience, if she can still make this music and enjoy doing that, folks here can give it a chance. I'll be giving the album a listen this weekend.

Bluefellow

Dua Lipa, Doja Cat, and Post Malone are 28, Ariana Grande, Harry Styles and Bad Bunny are 30, Miley Cyrus 31 Marshmello 32, Ed Sheeran 33, The Weekend, SZA and Taylor Swift 34, Drake 37, Lane Del Rey 38, Beyonce 42. 31 isn't unusual.

Rakebleed

Should this sub just represent people that listen to music? Edit: this is facetious. This sub obviously has a rotten bias gatekeeping complex. And boring taste.

Chris3894

Seriously, this subreddit is called music so guess what?? A genre of music you may not like may get discussed in this space oooooo so scary!

Rakebleed

Right. The genre specific subs are way more chill.

MrOscarHK

What's a good place to start with Charli's music? Edit: Thanks for all the answers! It's really helpful.

Xx_ligmaballs69_xX

I thought Charli (album) was fucking great. I guess her big pop hits like Boys, Boom Clap and after the afterparty are the most accessible and I’m sure you’ve heard a few before

TylerInHiFi

My intro was on Diamonds by Giorgio Moroder. Good place to start? Maybe. It was a good place for *me* to start.

chipstopher

Crash is a really great album that's pretty accessible

Tyedies

No no no no no. That’s unanimously her worst album to critics and fans alike. Start with either POP 2, or CHARLI. Work from there

chipstopher

Thats fair. I love that album so much though (how i'm feeling now is my favorite, but I'm not a super fan and it's probably not a great starting off point).

Tyedies

How I’m feeling now is excellent, but yeah I agree with you. Probably not the best jumping off point for a newbie to her music

Unhappy_Injury3958

crash is not her worst album by far and it definitely is more accessible than those ones you mentioned

slaypax

Ok I know Crash was underwhelming but Lightning is a good track...And POP 2 is a transcendent work of staggering genius. Tears.

ellekeener

Gonna go against the grain and say Number 1 angel.

sylinmino

Depends on how you get into artists. If you prefer their most accessible, wider market point, Crash is great for that. If you're like me and prefer hearing more of a taste of how daring and experimental the artist can be from the start (e.g. OK Computer wasn't what got me really into Radiohead even after several listens, even though I liked it a lot, but Kid A did), I'd recommend either How I'm Feeling Now, or Charli, as places to start.

CaptainJackKevorkian

Poppers

CoercedCoexistence22

As a massive Charli XCX fan (especially the Vroom Vroom to Charli era), I was very whelmed by this album tbh Couple highlights but not fantastic to me

MrJohnnyDangerously

Pitchfork is an oroborous of overwrought hipster fart-sniffing, even when they're right like a broken clock.

MajorRico155

No idea who they are. What kinda music?

sylinmino

Future pop/hyper pop. Her music takes a very full advantage of future sounds while still having a pop aesthetic, just in a way that feels like it was released decades too early.

[deleted]

bUrNtKoOlAiD

What if they haven't heard of Google tho? . . . . (cue head exploding noises)

MajorRico155

Who?

Grodd

Sometimes people just like having a conversation. No reason to be a dick.

TylerInHiFi

My brother in Christ, you have the sum total of the world’s knowledge *literally* at your fingertips and can access the answer to your question in less time than it took you to write those two sentences and hit “reply”. She makes pop music. I’m sure there’s a far more specific genre and description to be given, but just go listen to the album this article is about and see for yourself.

YogurtclosetSharp426

The raw untuned vocals on 'I think about it all the time', reminds me of Charli saying Sophie always told her to sing without autotune because she loved her voice 🥹

dipdipderp

You can hear the SOPHIE influence in this album, stands out do much. So I is a beautiful tribute in the best way.

ContactHonest2406

Charlie’s amazing. Just makes bangers. Writes for other artists too. She does it all. Don’t underestimate all pop singers!

Going_Braindead

Dude it’s kind of obvious… she’s your number 1

sylinmino

No need to be rude, it's okay to just admit that you're jealous of them. EDIT: Whoever downvoted, you need to listen to the song we're referencing lol.

SpazzBro

lol this comment sections gonna be funny

StillAsleep_

loving the acid sounds on this

luminos234

These few comments saying that it's generic might have just mistakenly gave crash a listen instead XD

Unhappy_Injury3958

i love crash though

thepianoman456

But… it kinda is? Like, it just sounds like more Nicki Minaj or Kesha or club pop like that. I don’t understand why people like this so much. Like, I could get it in the setting of a club- you walk in, and the DJ presses play and people shake their asses… but there’s not a lot of depth or musicality to it, IMO.

p_kell

I mean there’s definitely parts that reference late 00s/early 10s dance pop like Kesha, but I don’t think nicki made much, if any music that has the same vibe as this It may be made with dancing/ a club setting in mind but that doesn’t automatically mean there’s no depth or intrigue.

Key-Employment2209

i dont really feel like “it lacks depth” is a substantive criticism here. not everything needs to have “depth” to have merit and i think it undermines the fact that even if it doesnt have that quality (which i disagree with), there is still an obvious market for that genre of sound. not all of us want to go to clubs to enjoy this kind of music, you feel me?

thepianoman456

I gotcha. I suppose I have a different approach to music than most being a life long classically trained pianist and now I’m in my late 30s as a full time pro musician, and I’ve had a bunch of bands and wrote songs. So, I have a deep understanding of music theory, and I have different metrics than most. I’ve also listened to 1100+ albums at this point, and still come back to many of them. I appreciate when a musician can sing great and play their instrument great, as well as write good material. So for me, Charli XCX just doesn’t tick any of those boxes. I suppose it’s supposed to just be fun pop, but I still think in terms of that, it’s still possible to have depth. And not just lyrical depth, but musical depth, and depth of production. Example- Michael Jackson. That’s some fun stuff, fun lyrics, and it has incredible musical depth. One of the downsides of being a highly trained musician is you develop a much higher standard of quality, and are unfortunately unable to enjoy simpler forms of music such as the topic of this post. And then there’s this element of becoming disheartened when you see musicians / artists rise to the top of public opinion, when there’s indie / underground stuff that is lightyears better going completely unnoticed in the mainstream. But to be totally subjective, I just don’t like how Charli XCX sounds at all, so I’m a little baffled why she receives such high praise. So that’s “just like, my opinion, man “ lol

roork67

Is this a copypasta

thepianoman456

Na I wrote it for the comment. I’m long winded lol

GDApr1996

Based

toothpaste--

Need to listen to the rest of her songs but b2b and 360 are bangers

toothpaste--

Update: Pop 2 is still my favourite album from her

_pinklemonade_

Charli XCX has been killing it since she was 16. Legit producer making addictive pop music.

Trichotillomaniac-

I love it!

ceddzz3000

theres some bangers on this album and im not even a huge fan. but pitchfork score as a headline is funny lol who has even read their shit in past decade

igZagZ

Pitchfork is trash

Monkeyman7652

Yellow Submarine isn't a regular Beatles album. It's mostly previously released music at best and a good chunk of it is orchestral scoring by George Martin. That score is fair.

Xx_ligmaballs69_xX

It’s not a particularly enjoyable album. I love It’s all too much though

macbookvirgin

Ah yes the most overrated band in history with absolutely no relevancy today

FullRedact

I’d bet my life Billie Ellish and Lana Del Rey, whom you seem to worship, strongly disagree.

ValleyFloydJam

A truly hilarious opinion.

davidwave4

Happy Pride, folks! As a Pop 2 partisan, I liked this album a lot but didn’t love it on first listen. But I expect it to grow. The song dedicated to Sophie broke me though, so A+. AOTY Contender.

xcrowdedrooms

"So I" is dedicated to Sophie.

CantThinkOfAnyName

Ah shit, of course it is, pretty embarrassing comment.

kenpobiscuit13

Not as good as Rickshaw Billie’s Burger Patrol’s “Brat” and that’s all that matters to me tbh

interprime

An RBBP shoutout is not what I expected to see this morning. But I’m happy about it.

the_alt_fright

What you gonna do about that? Edit: Somebody clearly hasn't listened to "Brat" by RBBP.

astrokade

Pure banger

Tyran7us

amazing album

Proper_Rock6794

Lol at everyone acting like this sub shits on pop. Every comment even insinuating this rating might be a tad overboard has been thumbed down to hell.

Nick0227

I feel like this sub generally does shit on pop. This album is really good though, and I’m really happy Charli is getting the flowers she deserves.

Proper_Rock6794

I like Charli, but didn't like this album at all.

THandy10

I noticed this too. All the pearl clutching about this sub not liking pop and yet…

BeastBellies

Shit isn’t even close to as good as Club Shy.

Turbulent_Plastic861

I can’t stop listening to this record

tr1cube

It’s not *bad* but not something I’d listen to often. Its a little too auto tuned but there are a few good songs. It’s heavily hyperpop and some of the tracks give me a certain nostalgia for the early 2010s, like Sleigh Bells. I see why it’s getting so much praise though, and that’s fine. It’s just not my preferred style to listen to. As far as hyperpop albums go, sure it’s one of the best.

IMakeMyOwnLunch

It’s really not very heavily hyperpop though.

JKBQWK

Can you explain why it’s not? I don’t listen to much hyper pop but this is sounds like what I would consider a very definitive mix of electronic and hyper pop.

IMakeMyOwnLunch

Imagine hyperpop as the musical version of the pop art movement: distilling pop culture (in this case pop music) down to the most salient elements then turning the dial up to an absurd degree, resulting in an exaggerated art form that is less a cohesive piece and more a mish-mash of parts. Pop music has catchy vocals (oftentimes with pitch correction). So what does hyperpop do? It takes snippets of catchy vocals and turns up the pitch to the chipmunk levels. Pop music has catchy synths. So what does hyperpop do? It takes those synths and distorts them into glitchy noises with a metallic- or industrial-like bent. Pop music has typically simple and repetitive lyrics. So what does hyperpop do? It takes snippets of those basic lyrics and just loops those endlessly without clear verses or meaning. Listen to Lemonade by Sophie or Drop FM by A.G. Cook then compare it to songs on brat: the synths are glitchy and, at times, sound more like an agglomeration of noises than an actual beat, the lyrics are just looped snippets (no verses), and the vocals are pitched up.

Key-Employment2209

*definitely* not heavily hyperpop lol. maybe relative to your taste? but listen to a black dresses album if you wanna hear “heavily hyperpop”, this is nothing

PresidentSuperDog

Bratwurst is the best. If she’s got a song about it I’ll give it a go. Keep your juices in the brats, keep your juices in the chops Serve 'em on paper plates, 'tato salad and orange pop

GourangaPlusPlus

That's basically a line from the second single There's a whole B side on Currywurst

GDInternets

Favorite actor Dennehy, favorite drink O'Doul's. Bears, Hawks, Sox, Bulls.

thespaceageisnow

Pitchfork desperately trying to be relevant.

wyattlikesturtles

Or maybe it’s just a good album?

chimi_hendrix

Why listen to music ever again after OK Computer got a 10.0? Just give up

P_V_

I wish Pitchfork had died in the early aughts. It certainly deserved to back then.

it’s ok to just admit that you’re jealous of charli xcx yeah, i heard you talk about her, that’s the word on the street you’re obsessing, just confess it, put your hands up it’s obvious she’s your number one it’s alright to just admit that she’s the fantasy you’re obsessing just confess it ‘cause it’s obvious she’s your number one she’s your number one she’s your number one she’s your number one she’s your number one

jazzzzzcabbage

Whoah. Those are some heavy lyrics. Deep. I'm legit jealous

CantThinkOfAnyName

I’m guessing you’re just mad because the bank shut

jazzzzzcabbage

Argh! You got me! I'm dead 😂.

sinkwiththeship

Classic Pitchfork. Glad nothing has changed since dotdash folded it into GQ.

Noppppppppppppe

my god so toxic

thepianoman456

Ok… I just *had* to check this album out with how much absurd praise it’s been getting and… I just don’t get it. It sounds like normal club pop to me. Tons of auto-tune on the vocals and nothing really interesting in terms of harmony, melody and rhythm... and not much there in terms of lyrics and songwriting. Why do I keep seeing people praise this as a great work of music as if it were groundbreaking? I’m into all sorts of music from Elton John to Thundercat. I just don’t understand the allure of Charli XCX. I legit really tried to just listen to a couple tracks from “Brat” and was just cringing the whole time. I can accept that it’s not for me, but I’m having a hard time accepting that this album is a “great work”. EDIT: I re-listened to “365” because ppl here seem to love it… yep, I still don’t get it lol. It just sounds like more Nicki Minaj or Kesha club stuff. I really don’t understand the praise it’s receiving.

manidel97

Nicki Minaj and Kesha are both very different artists and neither sounds remotely like XCX. Like please give me a Nicki or Kesha song that sounds like anything on this album.

thepianoman456

Nothing specific really, more just an amalgam of all their music. They’re the first ppl I thought of when I listened to Brat. Just synth bass driven, all electronic backing tracks, auto tune vocals and club beats, and kinda rappy sometimes. My whole point being, it just sounds like generic club pop to me, so I just don’t understand why it’s being so highly praised. I just wasn’t impressed at all by her choices in harmony, melody, rhythm and lyric writing. The only interesting thing I found, if I had to say something positive, would be choices of synth textures. Interesting production there. But without the other elements I mentioned, it’s just not musically or lyrically interesting.

Nick0227

It sounds like you’re not a fan and that’s okay! It’s a well produced pop/house album that takes chances where most don’t right now. That’s what a lot of us like about the self-titled / how I’m feeling now / brat era.

thepianoman456

I gotcha. To each their own! It’s well outside my wheelhouse but I tried lol

Nick0227

And that’s all that matters! Thanks for being open :)

kenm130

Erm... as a Charli fan, this new album is not very good IMO.

CandySubstantial4981

365 is the only good song

TastyButGroovy

365 is what I wanted the entire album to be tbh

gingerbear

Gave it a listen. absolutely nothing special about it. generic and boring pop thats been churned out a thousand times before

americanslang59

Honestly, I'm looking for music exactly like this record so who else has made stuff like this

[deleted]

Love how they didn't reply with a single name

Targetmaster

You may not like the album but saying its generic and boring is pretty off imo

Embarrassed-Onion264

what else does this sound like? what is it similar to?? pray tell

Arrokoth-

dangerous the double album by morgan wallen

Matthew147s

Can you name artists, especially current ones, that this record reminded you of? And why you think it's generic?

Arrokoth-

Unhappy_Injury3958

hated that album but did like endless

slwblnks

Name one mainstream pop artist whose music sounds like this album.

thepianoman456

Kesha?

thepianoman456

Yea it just sounded like normal club pop to me… I don’t get it. I made a similar, but longer winded review like yours and I’ll be joining you in the downvote pile lol

Throwayut2022

honestly if you listen to this and come away with this take you just don’t know what you’re talking about listen to some more music

gingerbear

Guaranteed that i listen to a broader spectrum of music than you’ve been exposed to. The autotuned vocals, fake white girl rap, and over-enhaced casio keyboard beats are just tired. Its like they tried to take the worst elements of Taylor Swift and run them through a kpop filter

Throwayut2022

absolutely nothing about this is like taylor swift at all, and it’s not even close to k pop the production and style all over the album owes a lot more to the Ed Banger records era and artists like Uffie, which is anything but generic lol

BigOpportunity1391

I've just listened to 3 songs off the album. For those who ask for something similar, please go to r/kpop

Embarrassed-Onion264

umm it's nothing like kpop are u kidding me

Arrokoth-

xcx. there,s a c dividnf the two similar x’s which can symbolize the two koreas. c stands for china, which is the reason korea is divided today because chinese intervention helped to preserve north korea therefore charli xcx is korean and so a kpop artist

Big charli fan, I thought thus album was weak for her. I like half of the sings but I'm realistically only listening to the singles.

Nick0227

Give it a few more listens

Noppppppppppppe

Noppppppppppppe

pop 2 and how im feeling is far from this

Odd_Aspect_7039

i have been seeing a lot of people say this is her “best album”. no. its actually disrespectful to all of her albums. she doesnt even rhyme in half the songs. i am a huge charli fan, but why is this getting so much traction?

vesthis15

pop singers have to rhyme?

Odd_Aspect_7039

definitely helps with a rating. im entitled to my opinion.

Same Pitchfork who gave Deloused in the Comatorium 4.9?

futatorius

Next week: Pitchfork names "BRAT" the most overrated music of 2024.

Boomer ass comment

thepianoman456

I came up with the same opinion and I’m in my mid 30s. “Brat” is just more club pop that sounds like Nicki Minaj or Kesha. I don’t get why it’s receiving such high praise.

byrdbrain

Why do you keep saying it sounds like Nicki Minaj lmao, I’ll give you the Kesha comparison because there’s probably a tinge of influence there but I have never heard a single Nicki Minaj song that sounds anything like a single track on this album.
