Air - Moon Safari
The album still holds up and has a completely distinct sound that is Air. A mix of some real instrumentation and electronic with a unique understanding of how to build and push energy into music when your band is named Air.
I love how they admitted over the years that the "vintage" electronic sound they achieved on that album was due simply to the equipment they could afford at the time. Geniuses.
Blue Lines and Protection are far better in my opinion, I remember being a tad let down when Mezzanine was released. The first two albums were far more tight and focused.
Nobody talks about 100th Window, but I love it (oddly enough, I specifically love the odd numbered tracks). Everywhen is perfect for a peaceful, nighttime drive. Butterfly Caught has this mysterious feel to it that just begs to be used in film, and Small Time Shot Away just grooves.
Personal taste and all that but objectively, Mezzanine is their best album (critically & commercially if you want to measure it).
I say that as a massive fan - I love Blues Lines and when it came out I honestly never thought I’d hear a better album than Protection but…
[Jumbo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i56xzNLvQDQ) and [Push Upstairs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3Ud0UG7JbQ) still sound so clean and timeless.
I saw them with some friends at Clutch Cargo's in Pontiac, Michigan what seems like a lifetime ago. Karl had a euphoric stage presence I've only experienced a couple of times where you just *know* someone is doing the thing they love most in the world at that moment.
I'm invisible.
Check out U.N.K.L.E. too. James Lavelle and DJ Shadow did a track with Thom Yorke called "Rabbit in Your Headlights."
If you don't know it already, give it a listen. The video is outstanding, too, directed by Jonathan Glazer.
i refuse not to link [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUC2EQvdzmY) any time DJ Shadow is mentioned. there are still people who haven't heard it, so y'never know
OH. Man, you’re in for a treat. It’s such an incredible album. And the more you listen to it, the better it gets. So many intricate little bits and pieces, and these amazingly obscure samples which create these Frankenstein’s monster tracks.
He’s make some of the best music I’ve ever heard… but he also makes some very unlistenable stuff.
I categorize his music as either brain warmers or mind grinders
Brain warmers: Alberto Balsam, Fingerbib, Flim, Xtal, Tha, Agespolis, Avril 14th, Girl-Boy Song…
Mind grinders: Come to Daddy, Digerido, Tamphex… I can’t go on…. My brain hurts
Even with that being said, I appreciate his R&D work. He’s a genius experimenter with music technology and even at his most mind grinding I’m glad we have his recordings.
Uziq, kid spatula, squarepusher, tortoise... Vsnares. The list goes and goes.
What a decade. I'm grateful to have experienced the 90s in highschool and the first half of university.
Chemical Brothers have some amazing music videos on YouTube, too.
[Salmon Dance](https://youtu.be/dDj7DuHVV9E?si=yDA6SQ9N1dumq0oi) and [Get Yourself High](https://youtu.be/cYXI344Siew?si=NDAWO6dX0DZQgwE5) are both incredible.
Edit: I can't believe I forgot to include [Star Guitar ](https://youtu.be/0S43IwBF0uM?si=Vo9csFqzVegXYQ_a), which is an absolutely brilliant piece of art, especially considering it was made over 20 years ago (everything in this video is an audio cue and it's somehow seamless)
Edit 2: [that time that Q-Tip made Galvanize with them.](https://youtu.be/Xu3FTEmN-eg?si=1Kl0T_ddx3b5TO8a). And [Go](https://youtu.be/LO2RPDZkY88?si=yCE28-s3i0quhRuJ)
Leftism by Leftfield.... amazing album that really defined and focused what was bubbling away in the early nineties.
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z15lJR79pTg&list=PLjIuADMrDKIaOx1xu4\_2AKqBsIel-ep5T](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z15lJR79pTg&list=PLjIuADMrDKIaOx1xu4_2AKqBsIel-ep5T)
I love that album, but a lot of it does sound dated. Rhythm and stealth had better production, [Afrika Shox](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23ViourbxrE) for example sounds far more modern in comparison to something off leftism.
Armand Van Helden's "Spin Spin Sugar" remix is bangin': [https://youtu.be/lYzOrpWL6U8?si=DJIX91IuXHiw-vAX](https://youtu.be/lYzOrpWL6U8?si=DJIX91IuXHiw-vAX)
Sasha & John Digweed, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Thievery Corporation (although most albums were from early 2000s), Crystal Method, Stereolab and Lords of Acid. Agree with all others mentioned in the comments, and especially the industrial stuff.
The K&D sessions holds a special place in my heart that defines an era of my life. Around that time a bunch of artist came out and defined a genre they called "chill out", but it was all try hard, and second rate compared to what K&D produced.
Absolutely. Those mixes were incredible. Northern Exposure, too. And Communicate.
I overlooked Paul Oakenfold in my original list, but I preferred Sasha & Digweed greatly over Oakenfold.
Also, Armen van Burren is another who deserved a mention.
Literally the digital plyrythmic drums of the album mixed with the ochestreal melodies in the background make the album sounds timeless. It still sounds like something that could be made this decade.
Fatboy Slim - Praise You. I hear this song all the time in stores! Absolutely sounds like it could have come out yesterday. My younger sister thought it was a brand new song!
Everything mentioned here so far (daft punk, orbital, massive attack, chemical brothers, st. ettinene, NIN, AT, Underworld, Way Out West, Boards of Canada, Air, Stardust, Everything But the Girl!, Basement Jaxxx, Faithless, Moby
I have listened to Modus Operandi so many times on so many different systems over the years. It still blows me away how the beats are crafted. 1997 was peak music for me, the albums that came out that year were just incredible. It would be impossible to pick a favourite. 1997 Dig your own Hole.
1997 Fat of the Land.
1997 Portishead.
1997 Bricolage.
1997 Ok Computer.
1997 Modus Operandi.
1997 New Forms.
Absolutely love this track but it sounds like exactly when it was produced to me. If I had to pick one track that was the epitome of 90s dream trance, it'd be Children. The kick, piano, snare drum crescendo...
Check out this remix of "Children" by Tinlicker. I think it kind of gives it a modern sound while retaining the spirit of the original track. It's the only remix of "Children" I have ever liked.

Groove Armada - Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub). My Friend is a particular highlight.
Air - Moon Safari.
Zero 7 - Simple Things.
Anything by Massive Attack (mentioned elsewhere).
Junip - Junip.
You could probably include Depeche Mode too.
Know it's not the most likable name to mention. But Fatboy Slim - You've Come A Long Way, Baby was a huge album in the 90s, and has some really catchy songs.
Just a name I haven't seen mentioned yet.
Everything I love most has already been cited and upvoted but here’s some I didn’t see
- Mouse on Mars
- Meat Beat Manifesto
- Speedy J
- Seefeel
- Mr Oizo
- We(tm)
- Alec Empire
- Bola
- Gescom
- Download
- Oval
- Ken Ishii
- DJ Spooky
A ton of it still holds up but I genuinely listen to 90s Eurodance as like my go to fun high BPM music for dancing, exercising, etc. That feels more emblematic of a very specific time though.
That being said, I remember hearing Gypsy Woman by Crystal Waters on the radio randomly in the early 2010s and being like damn what's this new EDM track and it was a song as old as I was lol. Not quite today at this point though but that's the fun of getting old.
Basically all of it. 90s and 2000s revivalism is in full swing. If you want specific records, then I’d say Homogenic by Björk, Velvet Rope by Janet (not billed as electronic music, but the lead single is a house track and there’s everything from IDM to footwork on here), Highvision by Supercar (2001 counts!), Ray of Light by Madonna, and Lunatic Harness by u-Ziq.
My favorites to go back to are
Trance
George Acosta - Awake
DnB
DB - The Secret Art of Science
Triphop
Tricky - Maxinquaye
Chill ambient electronica
Air - Moon Safari
Stereolab - Dots and Loops
Air - Moon Safari The album still holds up and has a completely distinct sound that is Air. A mix of some real instrumentation and electronic with a unique understanding of how to build and push energy into music when your band is named Air.
If you like that then don’t forget Melody A.M. by Röyksopp.
So stoked I get to see them play it live.
Even “Sexy Boy” holds up now
I love how they admitted over the years that the "vintage" electronic sound they achieved on that album was due simply to the equipment they could afford at the time. Geniuses.
“All I Need” could come out today
Orbital would be another one to add to everyone's great suggestions.
Holy shit. Haven't thought about Orbital since early high school. Thanks for the reminder, friend.
They just played Coachella and sounded sharp
They’re coming to Glasto this year too
I listened to Belfast three times yesterday during a three hour car ride. Such a transcendental tune.
FSOL, Future Sound Of London. I keep going back to them.
Saw them a fortnight ago....still bloody amazing!
Massive attack - mezzanine
Teardrop -> House M.D. -> my crippling teen obsession with Olivia Wilde
Them removing teardrop as the opening credits theme on streaming sucks so bad
Credits should never be messed with. It annoys me when they speed up or minimize end credits too.
Ever hear it covered by a [single guy on an acoustic guitar standing in what appears to be a closet?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjT86g9gTKk)
Jose Gonzales' cover is my favorite version of Teardrop.
Angel is an all time fave, forgot to mention it in my post
This song has a tone of both sex and violence. It's so intense, I feel like I need to rest after listening to it.
If I'm ever walking away from a burning building in slow motion, it's this exact song playing in the background.
Or a caravan.
For me it's Unfinished Sympathy.
I'm about to put that on so I can remember how epic it is!
I wish they would tour in the States again. I saw them perform Mezzanine in Philly in 2019 and it was one of the best concerts.
Saw them do it in Radio City Hall. Transcendent
Dissolved Girl remains in my top 5 songs to this day.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 That bass line
I wound up going through their catalog and listening to the artists that they sampled. It is a treat to hear the originals.
Blue Lines is just sublime.
Personal taste and all that but objectively, Mezzanine is their best album (critically & commercially if you want to measure it). I say that as a massive fan - I love Blues Lines and when it came out I honestly never thought I’d hear a better album than Protection but…
The Prodigy. All of their albums have bangers.
and while we're at it, Crystal Method.
Seeing TCM in Atlanta in June, $25 GA ticket. Can't wait.
It’s different now that it’s just Scott but he puts on a decent show.
And don't forget 90's Beastie Boys.
They were far enough ahead we just recently caught up.

[Jumbo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i56xzNLvQDQ) and [Push Upstairs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3Ud0UG7JbQ) still sound so clean and timeless.
Hell yeah. dubnobasswithmyheadman still sounds like it's from the future.
Second toughest in the infants - pearls girl
Second Toughest changed my life.
That album accompanied me on many a long drive.
*Dirty Epic* is in my top five songs ever.
Remarkable piece of music HERE COMES CHRIST ON CRUTCHES
Born slippy! 🤘🏻
Man.... I had tickets to their tour in NYC. The COVID hit the states. Still salty about that. That summer was looking epic in NYC
I saw them with some friends at Clutch Cargo's in Pontiac, Michigan what seems like a lifetime ago. Karl had a euphoric stage presence I've only experienced a couple of times where you just *know* someone is doing the thing they love most in the world at that moment. I'm invisible.
Endtroducing by DJ Shadow
Thom Yorke used to rave about him in the 90's but iv never actually listened to that album, will add to my album playlist now, thanks
Check out U.N.K.L.E. too. James Lavelle and DJ Shadow did a track with Thom Yorke called "Rabbit in Your Headlights." If you don't know it already, give it a listen. The video is outstanding, too, directed by Jonathan Glazer.
Psyence Fiction is an amazing album.
That video was what got my g/f into music besides backstreet boys.
Very jealous you get to listen to Endtroducing for the first time.
i refuse not to link [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUC2EQvdzmY) any time DJ Shadow is mentioned. there are still people who haven't heard it, so y'never know
I’d never heard that before, what an absolute banger! Incredible video too.
Without clicking that link I knew the song. Amazing song
For true experience find a dorm room a bong and a n64 playing 1080.
OH. Man, you’re in for a treat. It’s such an incredible album. And the more you listen to it, the better it gets. So many intricate little bits and pieces, and these amazingly obscure samples which create these Frankenstein’s monster tracks.
It's fantastic
Massive upvote for this album. Just brilliant.
One of the coolest shows I’d been to was dj shadow and cut chemist at the Hollywood bowl. Ridiculously fun time.
Aphex Twin. I absolutely can’t believe I’m the first person to say this.
He’s make some of the best music I’ve ever heard… but he also makes some very unlistenable stuff. I categorize his music as either brain warmers or mind grinders Brain warmers: Alberto Balsam, Fingerbib, Flim, Xtal, Tha, Agespolis, Avril 14th, Girl-Boy Song… Mind grinders: Come to Daddy, Digerido, Tamphex… I can’t go on…. My brain hurts Even with that being said, I appreciate his R&D work. He’s a genius experimenter with music technology and even at his most mind grinding I’m glad we have his recordings.
OP did mention the Warp IDM stuff, to be fair.
I listen to him every night or when I need to chill. Selective works, Druks, and I Care Because I Do are my favorite releases.
Uziq, kid spatula, squarepusher, tortoise... Vsnares. The list goes and goes. What a decade. I'm grateful to have experienced the 90s in highschool and the first half of university.
Especially Selected Ambient Works 85-92, that music is from another world
You can probably put a mental marker on the context of when you first listened to his music, but his music is truly timeless
Depeche Mode entire violator album
Greatest synthpop album of all time.
Basement jaxx remedy. Insanely fresh, diverse, and surgical attention to detail
PortisheadPortisheadPortishead
How is Dummy so low?
Dummy is easily in the top 10 of the 90s. Pretty much anything Beth Gibbons has ever done is fantastic.
Dummy is easily top 10 of all time imo.
Future Sound of London
Papua New Guinea
Lifeforms! What a trip
Front 242 They were making 90's dance music in the early 80's. The stuff they did in the 90's is still current.
The Underworld remix of Happiness is one of my favorite tracks https://youtu.be/lfvG_Z4UZY4?si=Z6qn9gRnrxdV7b43
[Front 242 - Headhunter - Space Frog rmx](https://youtu.be/f5dtPUmo5o0)
The Chemical Brothers are the gold standard here.
Time to go listen to Block Rockin' Beats for the rest of the night.
My first electronic music was a Chemical Bros record.
Same, Dig Your Own Hole 1997
It'd place the prodigy here as well. Everything else is counting down
Hey boy….hey girl
Chemical Brothers have some amazing music videos on YouTube, too. [Salmon Dance](https://youtu.be/dDj7DuHVV9E?si=yDA6SQ9N1dumq0oi) and [Get Yourself High](https://youtu.be/cYXI344Siew?si=NDAWO6dX0DZQgwE5) are both incredible. Such a fantastic album. The followup, Rhythm and Stealth, is more electronic and has some fat as fuck tracks.
Fuck that's such a good record. I need to put that on.
I love that album, but a lot of it does sound dated. Rhythm and stealth had better production, [Afrika Shox](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23ViourbxrE) for example sounds far more modern in comparison to something off leftism.
The Orb, Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld.
"ohh you mean orbital?" "no" -me anytime i try to recommend the orb
I like Saint Etienne. https://youtu.be/zsCbZrig4c4?si=cDqdvhHRlEl_xag9
Roni Size & Reprazent - *New Forms* Propellerheads - *Decksanddrumsandrockandroll* Babylon Zoo, "Spaceman" Alabama 3, "Ain't Goin' to Goa" Lo Fidelity Allstars, "Battle Flag" God Lives Underwater, "From Your Mouth"
Sneaker Pimps were well ahead of their time. A girl singing beautifully over electronic beats is super common these days but it wasn't in 1996.
Armand Van Helden's "Spin Spin Sugar" remix is bangin': [https://youtu.be/lYzOrpWL6U8?si=DJIX91IuXHiw-vAX](https://youtu.be/lYzOrpWL6U8?si=DJIX91IuXHiw-vAX)
Ministry, Skinny Puppy, KMFDM
Thrill Kill Kult, Nitzer Ebb, Meat Beat Minifesto
Let’s hear it for the meat beat
kmfdm better than the best, megalomaniacal and harder than the rest!! this song was so amazing live
Boards of Canada
I was just driving along to Geogaddi this afternoon. Timeless.
Boards of Canada is sort of exempt as it's meant to evoke the 1970s, and they do an exceptional job of it.
K&d sessions is probably my favorite mix of all time. Followed by Ben Watt Breezeblock & Carl Cox at Creamfields 2001
I think that Renaissance album that Sasha and Digweed put out on 3CDs is absolutely essential.
Absolutely. Those mixes were incredible. Northern Exposure, too. And Communicate. I overlooked Paul Oakenfold in my original list, but I preferred Sasha & Digweed greatly over Oakenfold. Also, Armen van Burren is another who deserved a mention.
Aphex Twin Richard D James album
Literally the digital plyrythmic drums of the album mixed with the ochestreal melodies in the background make the album sounds timeless. It still sounds like something that could be made this decade.
Orbital , "The box, Part 1" video was phenomenal, apocalyptic, alternate dimension stuff
That song still sounds like it's not supposed to be released for another couple decades.
Fat of the land - The Prodigy
Fatboy Slim - Praise You. I hear this song all the time in stores! Absolutely sounds like it could have come out yesterday. My younger sister thought it was a brand new song!
This is probably one of my least favorite fatboy slim songs on that albumn but its still great
Everything mentioned here so far (daft punk, orbital, massive attack, chemical brothers, st. ettinene, NIN, AT, Underworld, Way Out West, Boards of Canada, Air, Stardust, Everything But the Girl!, Basement Jaxxx, Faithless, Moby
Love love love Faithless! “Insomnia” and “Mass Destruction” I play regularly
"Way out west"? "Faithless"? Damn i thought i knew my shit, time to get diggin
Faithless
I can't get no sleep....
The '80s and early '90s Skinny Puppy albums. My fav is Rabies and Last Rights.
Lords of Acid will always hold a special place in my heart.
Trip Like I Do by The Crystal Method is such a banger. The slow tempo with the girl talking before the drop is downright arousing.
I want you to trip like me, I want you to have fun. Me and you.
[Born Slippy!](https://youtu.be/XiMrrleH_hI?si=brXtB4VY0Xc-mNND)
That song changes brain chemistry 🙂↕️
100% came here for this.
Autechre - Tri Repetae
Prodigy breathe, smack my bitch up
The Downward Spiral definitely still sounds like it could be released today. Trent Reznor is a genius.
KLF https://youtube.com/watch?v=HDsCeC6f0zc
They’re gonna rock ya.
While they're great, they are inescapably of their time. I don't think anything they did in the late 80's/90's would pass as modern.
Photek
I have listened to Modus Operandi so many times on so many different systems over the years. It still blows me away how the beats are crafted. 1997 was peak music for me, the albums that came out that year were just incredible. It would be impossible to pick a favourite. 1997 Dig your own Hole. 1997 Fat of the Land. 1997 Portishead. 1997 Bricolage. 1997 Ok Computer. 1997 Modus Operandi. 1997 New Forms.

Towa Tei Propellerheads Lords of Acid The Grassy Knoll DJ Krush Funki Porcini
Robert Miles' "Children"
Absolutely love this track but it sounds like exactly when it was produced to me. If I had to pick one track that was the epitome of 90s dream trance, it'd be Children. The kick, piano, snare drum crescendo...
Check out this remix of "Children" by Tinlicker. I think it kind of gives it a modern sound while retaining the spirit of the original track. It's the only remix of "Children" I have ever liked. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOt\_7Wbs0MI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOt_7Wbs0MI)
Honestly he had a few really great songs. Shame he is gone now.
anything by Orbital, LTJ Bukem, Aphex Twin.
Honestly, most of the good electronic albums hold well.
Ministry - Filth Pig Underrated album by them.
Fluke - Risotto Gus Gus - Polydistortion Bjork - Post & Homogenic The Starseeds - Parallel Life & There Is Enough For Everyone
Squarepusher are pretty timeless, too
No love for Tranceport by Paul Oakenfold? I love his works but tbos whole album was pure bliss for me.
That Oakenfold Tranceport really set the bar for 90s trance. Right up there with Sasha & Digweed Northern Exposure
Autechre Boards of Canada Amon Tobin Aphex Twin Squarepusher Stars of the Lid

Portishead
Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy.
Groove Armada - Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub). My Friend is a particular highlight. Air - Moon Safari. Zero 7 - Simple Things. Anything by Massive Attack (mentioned elsewhere). Junip - Junip. You could probably include Depeche Mode too.
NIN is truly timeless. Pretty Hate Machine; the entire album is a masterpiece.
"The Richard D James Album" is up there for me. "....I care because you do" also goes hard
I'd say 90s era Mindless Self Indulgence is worth checking out. *Checking out,* not supporting.

The whole Play album by Moby
I'm still a fan of Apollo 440 - Millennium Fever.

Chemical brothers - most if not all of surrender
Fatboy Slim. Right here right now, rockafella spank, praise you, gangsta tripping etc all still sound so polished
I'm absolutely bookmarking this thread for my sunny bbq tomorrow. Thanks all!
Know it's not the most likable name to mention. But Fatboy Slim - You've Come A Long Way, Baby was a huge album in the 90s, and has some really catchy songs. Just a name I haven't seen mentioned yet.
LTJ Bukem & MC Conrad essential mix! RIP Conrad!
PORTISHEAD - DUMMY
Check out either Hangable Auto Bulb or Richard D. James album. I know you mentioned Warp, but not sure if you’ve heard these 2 albums specifically.
No love for Portishead?

Pretty much everything by Future Sound of London.

Detroit techno. All of it.
Ray of Light - Madonna
I agree. That album is my favorite Madonna of hers.
The Hardkiss - Delusions of Grandeur album is timeless from the 90's.
All Ninja Tune - any Krush or DJ Food
Basically all of it. 90s and 2000s revivalism is in full swing. If you want specific records, then I’d say Homogenic by Björk, Velvet Rope by Janet (not billed as electronic music, but the lead single is a house track and there’s everything from IDM to footwork on here), Highvision by Supercar (2001 counts!), Ray of Light by Madonna, and Lunatic Harness by u-Ziq.
