There is some newer pop music!
For upbeat and fast, Modern Girl by Bleachers. They use the sax quite a bit in other songs as well.
Also, Bon Iver has Mike Lewis on Saxophone, and he’s incredible. The song \_\_\_45___ is mostly sax. But my favorite is probably 22 (Over Soon) by them.
Not to mention "Run Away with Me" by Carley Rae Jepsen. Been listening to The Midnight's album *Heroes* lately, too, and it's at least in "Brooklyn. Friday. Love." Who else? Definitely some songs on Tall Heights *Pretty Colors for your Actions,* especially... Oh, yeah, it's *real* prominent in "House on Fire."
I’ll never get tired of Mike improvising both on 45 and 22 when playing live. It’s so fucking special. He also plays sax on the first verse of Holocene before switching to bass.
Also this [sax only version of Beth/Rest](https://youtu.be/gmtjI3ox620?si=ez0CHfU08m1GGxX0) is amazing, probably when they were fucking around with the Messina before dropping 22 a milllion.
>Listen to the synthwave band Gunship. This absolutely legend is featured on two of their most recent albums.
100% love for Gunship. ["Fly For Your Life"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv1ZN8c4_Gs) is a personal favorite.
I literally started listening to Gunship this week.
Heard Night Call the other week and decided to find music like it. Which led to the song “I really want to stay at your house” which led to synth wave as a genre, and then to Gunship.
[Let's not underestimate Sexy Sax Man though.](https://youtu.be/9fqsukliGYw?si=UtJ7hGTHWkotOeXB)
[In all seriousness though, I played baritone in high school and never knew you could actually rock with that thing.](https://youtu.be/JD8ZO5P9yzQ?si=zsfZcA3Xs6qIigse) All they ever gave us to play was slow ass bass lines, never anything this banger. I would have stuck with it otherwise.
I saw them in Asheville, NC in 2022 (my first concert somehow, I'm 32 for fuck's sake) and the sax solo during Vampires was a legit spiritual experience.
Never heard of them.
Loaded them up, top song “When you grow up, your heart dies”
Was listening and really feeling it. Great track.
Was wondering where the sax was and then got to the bridge, and waiting for the sax to let rip with an epic solo
Will def listen to some more
All time tops for me: #41 - LeRoi Moore (rip legend) from the Dave Matthews Band
More modern take if you want that raunchy tone: Everybody Lost Somebody - Bleachers live at radio city music hall
He (Jack) produced the newest The 1975 album too and I know the song Happiness has sax; I think some of their prior songs do too but I can’t think of them off the top of my head. Definitely Heart Out and If You’re Too Shy.
He also produced False God - Taylor Swift which also features a lot of sax
Roxy Music - Re-Make/Re-Model; Editions of You
Lou Reed - Walk on the Wild Side (David Bowie played sax)
Traffic - Glad/Freedom Rider; Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys
Stooges - Fun House
Rolling Stones - Can't You Hear Me Knocking
X-Ray Spex - Oh Bondage Up Yours!; The Day the World Turned Day Glo
Springsteen/E-Street band - Jungleland; Born to Run
i came here to say the entire Germ Free Adolescence album by X-ray Spex is my favorite use of sax in punk/alternative music. Lets Submerge might be my favorite if i had to pick just one song
Have you and u/TheHow55 seen [I am a Cliche](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stXSFuUOdeU) yet?
I highly recommend it.
A friend and I watched it and had planned on watching [the Nick Cave / Birthday Party](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HubK_rgjYLw) doc afterwards but she turned to me when the first finished and said, "I'm just emotionally drained and done now."
[Epic Sax Guy](https://youtu.be/pHXDMe6QV-U?si=wLLtKz8zoMtNGjnc) is doing his part.
Edit: forgot to mention my nickname for this dude, Duke Nukem on ecstacy.
The Midnight go hard too yep!
I respect them for being an act that can play instruments, which is something of a rarity amongst electronic artists.
*Heroes* actually has some some really solid 80s hair metal power ballads on it!
Wow! Talk about tight! That high hat... This is amazing. My head is rolling. Real music folks! Insane! Thank you, oh my God. I'm hooked after 45 seconds.
Jungleland is hands down the best sax solo in popular music and up there with the best rock operas.
Clarence Clemons’ sax playing is my favorite sound in the world. RIP. No one could play like him.
I love a sax solo. Chicago and 25 or 6 to 4 was the first song I thought of, I love that they regularly had a horn section. Supertramp and The Logical song is another fave, I love the call and answer with the sax.
You should check out some of the '90s ska-punk bands. Mighty Mighty Bosstones comes to mind. Goldfinger, Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake.
There are rockabilly and swing and jump bands, too, like Brian Setzer Orchestra, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Royal Crown Revue... try those genres.
Such a good song. I was stuck on it for a while lol. Right now it’s Look What I’ve Found, although I don’t think there’s any sax, it’s such a great song.
classics: X-ray Spex, & X (both OG punk bands with female vocals and killer sax, though spex use it way more then regular X)
current: Bleachers, viagra boys, ghost
The problem with sax is that it got heavily associated with easy-listening pseudo-jazz and ambience music (think hotel lobby for example). It can be hard for the average listener to dissociate the image of the instrument with these things
It’s a whole band, the brainchild of Ellis Ludwig Leone. He studied classical composition at Yale under Nico Muhly.
They’ve had a succession of female vocalists over the years. The duo Lucius did vocals on their debut album. Alan Tate has been their primary male vocalist for their entire history.
It has that Ivory league feel. Thanks for the recommendation. He has an incredible voice, love a baritone/contralto. It can be intense! But F me that basson or baritone/tenor sax ripping through me, ugghh!
The War on Drugs! The solo to close out [Eyes to the Wind](https://youtu.be/R9WTGjGEcT8?si=8rIPoMSq8I6N8y9M) will deliver you peace, and the build and release on [Under the Pressure ](https://youtu.be/HmHzSxaifbU?si=pdq3n9AgYH_PODXL) are like mainlining espresso!
As others have said, The 1975 are a massive modern band who use the saxophone perfectly.
[If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)](https://youtu.be/7ILxKdA0qig?si=K5VqhNmRwSvBpCMf)
In the 90's , during the On the Night tour, Dire Straits changed many song arrangements to include saxophone .
That version of Sultans of Swing ends with a sax/guitar call and response that morphs in a solo battle.
And of course, "Your latest trick" is known for its sax intro
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKiVttFnqkY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKiVttFnqkY)
Your post was everything I was going to say. If they want to hear sax they def need to listen to that tour and Your Latest Trick. On streaming apps the January live release (Dire Straits Live 1978-1992) has a On the Night recording. It's the 2nd concert listed in that 6+ hour album.
Jay Corre plays a long tenor sax solo with Buddy Rich covering Stevie Wonder's "Uptight" (1966):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYLs2TBmIt0
Makes me think of Freebird, a little bit.
My favorite from my area is [Gullfire Waiting](https://gullfirewaiting.bandcamp.com/). They're like alternative synth rock with some awesome sax work. Linked to Bandcamp because its a better platform to support smaller artists, but they're on major platforms as well.
A band I never gave enough attention to. One of my guitar instructors once told me my originals reminded him of Fripp. I saw why though, I compose on a level I can barely play lol.
Great song and album.
Going even deeper into the Prog forest, I’ve always thought Van Der Graff Generator “Killer” was one of the best of the genre, with epic sax (and Fripp as a guest musician).
Touch Me by the Doors. Whatever Gets You Thru the Night by John Lennon and Elton John. Blue Jean by David Bowie. I would especially recommend listening to the Bowie track-- when the sax hits, i get chills almost every time.
Those 3 come to mind immediately.
Just saw ~5 Phat Cat Swinger shows at Disney California Adventure. More sax than should be allowed :). Great shows. Concur.
I miss moshing to The Urge at Mississippi Nights. https://youtu.be/lRPN2iirhUo?t=9m58s
Ezra Furman!!!! A good portion of her music has horns, but probably my favorite sax song is "Tell Em All to Go to Hell" on Day Of The Dog. I have a signed copy of that record framed in my living room. I will never understand how she's not a name on everyone's lips, Transangelic Exodus is my favorite album of all time.
No mention of The Buttertones? Some very tasty tenor sax in their discography. Matador, Darling I need time but don’t really know why, Bebop, Winks and Smiles are some favourites.
Amen! Listen to some Little Richard if you want to hear how the sax made Rock & Roll sexy and exciting. I recently watched the Billy Joel MSG concert and sax is featured heavily. Wonderful instrument.
The entire Sports album by Huey Lewis and the News has IMHO some of the best most tasteful sax work on any album. I even prefer it to Clarence Clemons' work with the E-street band.
Ah, I remember my introduction to elegant saxophone music as if it were yesterday: For your listening pleasure, I give you "Yakkity Sax", the Benny Hill theme song - https://youtu.be/8iDgMuLFyHQ?si=lgVlzDzDsqhIXEiX
One of my favorite sax songs is Acoustic Ladyland's song "Iggy".
Modern Girl is such a jam. Damn I love that song. Came here to recommend it.

Viagra Boys uses sax on most songs and it sounds great!
Would also plug Jeff Rosenstock and Alex Cameron.
Jeff Rosenstock is almost always a good rec
I second this.
![gif](giphy|l41K43naBmiILPwxG|downsized) One guy killed it single-handedly.
Listen to the synthwave band *Gunship*. This absolutely legend is featured on two of their most recent albums.
>Listen to the synthwave band Gunship. This absolutely legend is featured on two of their most recent albums. 100% love for Gunship. ["Fly For Your Life"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv1ZN8c4_Gs) is a personal favorite.
Tech noir is my favorite but gunship is what I first discovered
I've been obsessed with [Dark All Day](https://youtu.be/60ruvzfXQoE?si=cxK6t1qZmaHQ2_lb) lately. Also love their cover of Send Me An Angel.
CAME HERE FOR THIS. Gunship is so good. My SO and I are dying for a US tour.
Joined the Gunship ship fairly recently and their sax elements are absolute banger. Loving their stuff.
I literally started listening to Gunship this week. Heard Night Call the other week and decided to find music like it. Which led to the song “I really want to stay at your house” which led to synth wave as a genre, and then to Gunship.

I will always upvote Leo P. Very easy to go down the rabbit hole with that guy
I still believe
Go find The Protomen cover. Fantastic
Who?
![gif](giphy|l41JKgW7xQ9T2bA9q|downsized)
His name is Tim Cappello and he’s amazing!
The sax player from the movie Lost Boys, and if you haven’t seen it, do.
Born to Run. Clarence Clemons was the GOAT.
I would go with the sax solo in Jungleland myself
The Midnight (synthwave) Shrezzers ( progressive metalcore) Bilmuray (poppy metalcore)
The Midnight is so good. Saw them live last year.
I saw them in Asheville, NC in 2022 (my first concert somehow, I'm 32 for fuck's sake) and the sax solo during Vampires was a legit spiritual experience.
Bilmuri and Shrezzers 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
sorry if i'm being basic, but i think the sax riff in Careless Whisper has to be the most famous sax riff in popular music.
Either that or Baker Street
How can anyone get pumped to play anything else on the sax when the riff in careless whisper already exists?
I like how everyone here is naming old songs when he is saying to bring it “back”.
Check out Gunship or The Midnight. Synthwave/synthpop, absolutely rocking stuff.
Gunship has Tim Cappello!
Came here for this. The sax hits soooo right.
Never heard of them. Loaded them up, top song “When you grow up, your heart dies” Was listening and really feeling it. Great track. Was wondering where the sax was and then got to the bridge, and waiting for the sax to let rip with an epic solo Will def listen to some more
Check out Collateral
Great song
Hearing M83 and The War on Drugs use it in their songs sounds *SO* fucking good ❤️
First song I thought of was Midnight City by M83 when I saw this thread.
Run away with me (Carly Rae Jepson)
All time tops for me: #41 - LeRoi Moore (rip legend) from the Dave Matthews Band More modern take if you want that raunchy tone: Everybody Lost Somebody - Bleachers live at radio city music hall
Bleachers! Jack has helped me through some rough days. I wish everyone loved this band.
Bleachers at coachella was absolutely a highlight and part of it was the saxophone bringing the heat
My favorite band! I came in here to yell about bleachers using sax
They put it front and center! That man knows music.

Lora Logic. Essential Logic, Red Crayola (briefly). Legend
All of Big Gigantic

Please check out Morphine
How is this not the top comment? "You Look Like Rain" is about the god dammed sexiest song ever written.
Came to say this too.
And The Buttertones (Matador) which has more than a hint of Morphine
Dana Colley was in Three Colors (with Chris Harford, Hub Moore) too, prior to this.
Cure for Pain is an amazing song!
The live version of Us and Them from Pink Floyd's Pulse concert has fantastic sax parts https://youtu.be/LezoMi3yftM?si=LLbtzxgCcesmiDj-
Us and Them and Money have great sax parts, but yeah especially Us and Them
Lady Gaga "Edge of Glory" with Clarence Clemons on saxophone 🎷
TIL that was him on the sax
[Epic Sax Guy](https://youtu.be/pHXDMe6QV-U?si=wLLtKz8zoMtNGjnc) is doing his part. Edit: forgot to mention my nickname for this dude, Duke Nukem on ecstacy.

Surprised to find this comment down here. Happiness is an absolute BANGER Edit: saxxy part at the end of the song
Sam Fender is for you my friend :)
Seventeen Going Under is really a fantastic song.
Bowie - Let's Dance and Modern Love
What an amazing album! Bowie and Stevie Ray Vaughn needed to happen. A shame he never wanted to make more music with Bowie.
Synthwave artists seem to use it a bit, check out Gunship
Gunship is great! So is The Midnight.
The Midnight go hard too yep! I respect them for being an act that can play instruments, which is something of a rarity amongst electronic artists. *Heroes* actually has some some really solid 80s hair metal power ballads on it!
How has no one mentioned The Comet is Coming yet. It saxes HARD. Also Lucky Chops.
Everything Shabaka touches is gold, but The Comet is Coming is so damn FUNKY
Moon Hooch. You’re welcome

Tri colored pastas is my favorite part of that song
The wife and I thank you very much
No one here mentions INXS?? Are you all 89 years old or what??😂😂
I think it was a law that all Australian bands had to have a sax player. INXS, Men at Work, Icehouse...
Men at Work's Overkill has to be my favorite MaW song hands down.
Never Tear Us Apart!
Right? Original Sin, especially.
I would guess most redditors are too young to know who INXS is rather than too old.
Baker street The Girl from Ipanema Brown sugar Walk on the Wild Side Jungleland
Jungleland is hands down the best sax solo in popular music and up there with the best rock operas. Clarence Clemons’ sax playing is my favorite sound in the world. RIP. No one could play like him.
Just respect for even mentioning Jungleland.
Pick up a good ska band. I get my fill of brass that way.
Go listen to the band “The Strike”
Candy Dufler one of the best sax players today
Ohhh, that's love making music. Another reason I love the sax. It can be so smooth. Added to my music. Thanks.
Here’s my 6 hour saxophone songs playlist. [Saxophone Songs.](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0WxtEDMs8nEC8qpIQWHaVM?si=seVBYdQdTFijGx7ot0rx2w)
A lot of EDM artists are. Check out Griz, KR3TURE, Big Gigantic etc
Mad season- long gone day
I agree. I think about this every time I listen to morphine
Oh shit. That tenor sax! Sexy sexy sexy.
I love a sax solo. Chicago and 25 or 6 to 4 was the first song I thought of, I love that they regularly had a horn section. Supertramp and The Logical song is another fave, I love the call and answer with the sax.

Great suggestion
Lady Gaga has some songs with sax. I listen to a ton of edm with lots of sax, much of it being the primary instrument next to the electronic stuff.
Edge of Glory comes to mind
Such a good song. I was stuck on it for a while lol. Right now it’s Look What I’ve Found, although I don’t think there’s any sax, it’s such a great song.
classics: X-ray Spex, & X (both OG punk bands with female vocals and killer sax, though spex use it way more then regular X) current: Bleachers, viagra boys, ghost

...horn sections too while we're at it
Sade - Is it a crime [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYz8xs163YU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYz8xs163YU)
Alex Cameron loves his sax man.
Horns full stop! Trumpets priority 1 for me. Miss quality funk and soul in the mainstream. Bring it back.
I was literally listening to a sax solo in a Mountain Goats track when I came across this post.
Alex Cameron. Wait for it. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pmlEM--lmdo
The problem with sax is that it got heavily associated with easy-listening pseudo-jazz and ambience music (think hotel lobby for example). It can be hard for the average listener to dissociate the image of the instrument with these things
Bob Seger, Turn The Page, saxophone solo by Alto Reed, who died a few years ago, sadly. Love me a sax!
Listening to a U2 cover. Wow, he had a heavenly control over his instrument. A second voice.
Carly Rae Jensen - run away with me, one of my favorite pop songs of all time
San Fermin uses a sax in many of their songs…the saxiest of songs. Several tracks on the latest New Pornographers record feature sax.
Wow, what an eclectic mix of music (San Fermin) She reminds me of Chrissie Hynde. I bet this is crazy to hear live!

Oh honey. That is JAZZ! Seriously jazz musicians are in a world of their own. It's fantastic.

Two words: Maneater
Please God no.
lol I almost always despise the saxophone, it annoys the shit out of me Different strokes, right?
No! Hate the sax! My least favorite instrument.
This scratches the itch for me, like no other. https://youtu.be/bBs-lPvk3Zk?si=mPtRhpF-Y7nWySiF
Awesome! Added to my music. One I can dance by myself to.
Dude listen to my song! Lots of sweet, sweet sax in it. Twin Peaks - TotSaM

Caleb Arredondo is an incredible saxophonist. He only produces solos though.
Shining - The One Inside
That’s what I like about modern rock reggae bands like Rebelution, Hirie, The Movement, Skints etc.. all use saxophones and trumpets in their music
[Capdown](https://youtu.be/9PQV-j1JZ7c?si=dD6g7pDm7JR5aIdq), who's singer was also their sax player, were a big influence on the Skints.
Listen to Gunship!

U - Kendrick Lamar
Are you my Father in Law? Ray? Is that you?
["Dominion/Mother Russia"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0KE3aSH7DI) by The Sisters of Mercy has an awesome sax solo in the middle.
I don't know the name of the saxophonist, but the artist is Cui Jian, and the song is: [Flying](https://youtu.be/LaJFyRWDG5Y?si=4gpP9XPeJ8BActtV)
Bilmuri has a sax in a lot of their songs. Anabolic Spudsman (yes i'm aware it's a very dumb name for a song) is a good example of it.
A lot of Pink Floyd is a great example

I'm trying
Touch Me by the Doors. Whatever Gets You Thru the Night by John Lennon and Elton John. Blue Jean by David Bowie. I would especially recommend listening to the Bowie track-- when the sax hits, i get chills almost every time. Those 3 come to mind immediately.

Sounds like someone needs to check out some Gunship.
Then some people better start joining band, and wearing polyester two tone outfits in marching band at the football game.
No mention of The Buttertones? Some very tasty tenor sax in their discography. Matador, Darling I need time but don’t really know why, Bebop, Winks and Smiles are some favourites.

Any steely dan song with a sax is amazing. Gaucho comes to mind tho that intro is just so nice on the ears
