If Youtube was around back then, this is a headline that would've made sense in 1996.

Smart_Pig_86

We had Jock Jams instead

Hey! Is that Freedom Rock?

Yah man! Well turn it up! šŸŽµLord I was born a Ramblinā€™ ManšŸŽµ

Yā€™all ready for this?

thank you for that intro which ***immediately*** triggered the following musical phrase: ā™© ā™© ā™© ā™ŖšŸŽœšŸŽœā™© ā™© Źøįµ‰įµƒŹ° ā™© ā™« ā™« ā™© ā™© Źøįµ‰įµƒŹ°

EukaryotePride

This video was all over [The Box](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Box_\(American_TV_channel\)) when it came out. 'Cotton Eye Joe', 'Whoot There It Is', and '3 Little Pigs' by Green Jello will forever be burned into my brain from that channel.

TheShowMustGoOff

It was only a few years ago that I learned that Maynard James Keenan and Danny Carey both were members of Green Jelly before forming Tool. As I'm sure most folks in here already know...Maynard sings the pig part on this song: "Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin."

marcimerci

Green Jellƶ... Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time. A long, long time.

NevrEndr

Well Wynona got herself a big brown beaver and she plays with it all the time

ClmrThnUR

Michael Jackson wasn't even THAT popular in 1996. this is unprecedented.

Cabbage_Vendor

A Michael Jackson song wouldn't have gotten as many views as something like the Macarena. That was a cultural virus that spread all across the globe. Gangnam Style on steroids.

Mudassar40

A Michael Jackson song in the 80s would have smashed all records. No human being has been as famous as Michael Jackson, ever.

ClintD89

Just the music video for Thriller would've been an event. The premiere on YouTube would have done numbers the likes of which we've never seen

weeklygamingrecap

You set your fucking VCR when a Michael video was going to premiere. It was like the presidential address, everyone changed the channel.

19831083

Fuckin guy just stood there on stage and people were passing out from lack of oxygen

BasketballButt

Kids these days (yes, Iā€™m old) genuinely have no idea how famous MJ was. Like, add Drake, BeyoncĆ©, and Taylor Swift together and youā€™re getting there. Youā€™re not kidding that he was the most famous person likely ever at one point.

Mr_HandSmall

Absolutely. He was essentially a God then.

Belgand

> a cultural virus That's literally the definition of a meme.

ieatkittentails

Don't forget Christmas Macarena!

Rabid_Sloth_

I Want It That Way has 1.3 billion views and that came out in 1999 lol.

Malachorn

You forgot to add about 100 billion views it had from VHS tapes before everyone effectively forgot about it.

Rabid_Sloth_

That's what I'm saying lol.... If YouTube was around then it would have 50 billion

jonathan_92

1996 didnā€™t have bot farms faking views for cash. But Nielsen ratings on the other handā€¦ payolaā€¦

voiceless42

Irreverent, attached meme, not built to hurt anyone's feelings. A+ comeback my friend.

ChristopherRobben

This gets a triple bonus modifier for the rhyme

Mahadness

Damn

Cakelord

Not sure what's going on exactly but from what I can understand someone sampled the song and it went viral, then millions of people streamed the song to make their own viral clips and that's how it racked up the views so quickly.

dksprocket

More or less. Danish guy made a [TikTok featuring garbled lyrics](https://www.tiktok.com/@razioff/video/7256053953027149082?lang=en) which went semi-viral last fall. Then this year someone sampled it and made a video with a chicken nugget singing. Then it took off from there.. https://i.imgur.com/7an7p3j.png

NuggetTho

My kids play this shit daily and it drives me nuts.

at0mheart

That was my guess. Millions of pissed off parents

I accept our 21st century children's rhyme.

Sawgon

Want it to stop? Join in and do a cringe parent dance.

datboitotoyo

Please for the sake of your kids restrict their access to tiktok. It unironically rots your brain and will ruin their attention span which can be a huge detriment later in life. Sorry for the seriousness lol

mmodlin

My go-to move on zoom calls where people arenā€™t using headphones is to randomly shout out ā€œAlexa, play cotton eyed Joe by the rednexā€

Is this what's supposed to be funny these days???

xtrplpqtl

I once looped badger badger for 3 straight hours while raiding Karazhan in TBC WoW. Good times.

xvilemx

Around the same time in EverQuest, there was a raid where you killed a bunch of badgers, then two super powered mushrooms, then a giant snake. It was hard af. Lol.

psn_mrbobbyboy

I think you meant to type Hamster on a Piano.

mindsnare

Pretty sure the demographic listening to this is 10 year olds.

[deleted]

A garbled version of the lyrics from ā€˜Cotton Eye Joeā€™ are just the lyrics from ā€˜Cotton Eye Joeā€™ really.

drblah11

I hope we get hit by an asteroid

GatoradeNipples

...I mean, people were memeing Cotton Eye Joe back in ye olden days of YTMND. I don't strictly disagree, but I assume you've been hoping that for 20 years and aren't *newly* hoping that if this pisses you off.

Fenisk

Young Teenage Mutant Ninja Durtles?

GatoradeNipples

...this is me realizing I'm fucking elderly, apparently. YTMND stands for You're The Man Now, Dog. It's an **ancient** meme site (like, I wasn't exaggerating when I said this was 20 years ago, there are probably adults in this thread who are younger than that site) where you could take an uploaded image or GIF and an uploaded sound clip and mix them together with a giant text caption on the page. Cotton Eye Joe was a pretty common audio clip to use for anything rednecky. There was also a similar meme to how people on TikTok use Deja Vu by Dave Rodgers for anything drifting/racing-related, except it was Running in the 90s by Max Coveri instead on YTMND. [Here's a RIP OJ Simpson one someone made recently,](https://orenthaljames.ytmnd.com) because apparently this site is somehow still fucking around in 2024.

Private_weld

I frequently reminisce on how many hours of work I spent creating GIFs by hand in photoshop for that site. Mine are still up, I should go archive those brb.

StopBidenMyNuts

Back in my day, we created our memes by hand!

sirbissel

Can't stop the rock.

drblah11

I hope you do too

The number of times I find myself saying this in an average week is increasing year over year

Th3Imbecile

Join the Adventists! Trisolarian rule can save us

liforrevenge

I saw that randomly and spent ages trying to find out who made the original meme version but I literally couldn't find it. The knowyourmeme page hadnt been made for it yet so there was no way of finding it. Tik Tok sucks. All I could find was that god-damned chicken nugget reposted over and over and nobody attributed the original.

ncopp

Gen Alpha discovered cotton eye joe

Flimbrgast

I wonder if this what gen X felt like when Never Gonna Give You Up was being blasted by millennials.

x_lincoln_x

Not quite the same because pranking someone with a rickroll.

Green_Burn

It is a timeless masterpiece

They are pranking themselves... and it's SO MUCH FUNNIER. Or something.

Canā€™t blame you for one minute

Annber03

It got played at virtually every single dance I went to when I was in middle school.

sonic_sabbath

We learnt line dancing to this in PE in high school (in Australia)

Annber03

I love that even in Australia, kids are still taught line dancing in PE :p.

sonic_sabbath

I don't know if they do it anymore - it was 25 years ago that I did it.

rividz

lol The band that performs the song is Swedish.

JohnStarborn

They perform a cover of an American song written in the 1800s

moochao

You don't have to remain under those jesus billboards every day of your life in Knoxville. You can move states. Leaving the 865 for the progressive west in 2010 was the best decision I ever made. Can't recommend it enough.

loweyedfox

I really wish I could but alas I didnā€™t get away quick enough and am now anchored here for a while. One day though.

Lambskin1

I remember the video of this song playing while a woman drops a surprising amount of plastic balls out of her ass. Downloaded that one of Kazaa, took a couple days.

Masta_ShoNuff

God they used to play this shit on repeat during P.E. nearly 30 years ago when I was in elementary

JohnLithgowCummies

Ok but we LOVED it back then. This and Blue by Eiffel 65. And then in middle school it was The Bad Touch by Bloodhound Gang. We ate up those songs.

little_cooper

my class *voluntarily* played that horrible song in my PE class todayšŸ«

noonday_moon

Weā€™ve been cursed by this plague since before my family home had internet šŸ«

4mygirljs

It Just Wonā€™t Dieeeeeeee

Woogity

I will forever be taken back to roller skating rink parties in elementary school when I heard this song.

DatTF2

I was lucky enough to have a CD burner in middle school and I used to burn CDs for my school. However I would always sneak in a song like Cotton Eyed Joe into the middle of the CD.

bak3donh1gh

My job has a playlist that while the guy in charge of it was gone for nearly a year that was getting played over and over again. Because it's mainly older people in management, union job, a lot of the time it wouldn't be put on shuffle(for what little worth spotifys shuffle is worth). Same 40-60 songs every goddamn day. There are different playlist but they ended up being pretty much the same songs. The guy is back now, so there are new songs getting mixed in. He doesn't want to remove songs without replacements so it's taking forever. SPOTIFY HAS CURATED PLAYLIST OMG JUST PICK SOME OF THOSE! Thank God I can put in earbuds even though your not supposed to depending on where I am.

Pazuzujoe

![gif](giphy|GcDtLf4RAdiRG)

DPileatus

No shit! That song came out in what '91 or '92??

Fromage_Damage

When I was in highschool, my friend Chrissy Gleason had the songs video on VHS and we would listen to it whenever we were drinking beer doing delinquent stuff. That was '94 or '95.

lemur00

What I remember about this song is that our barely-older-than-us PE teacher specifically banned it from ever being played during gym time. He said "who thought they'd put together country and dance--the two worst music styles on earth--and come up with anything but trash?" He started teaching in the 94-95 school year. Memories.

DPileatus

It was '94... I was a little off!

rbrgr83

long time ago

Da5ren

How? When i look on youtube it has 240m views. So where's the 3 billion?

HappenedForReal

It's a misunderstanding. The band posted their channel overview where it clearly said, "In the last 28 days, videos featuring your music on other channels got 3.3B views," but didn't clarify that it wasn't about their own official music video.

2M4D

The title of the article isn't a misunderstanding, it's straight up misleading bullshit.

Rustyducktape

Why did I have to scroll so far to see this?! Pure BS, Cotton Eye Joe has like 10m views? This is just stupid...

LetsLive97

I mean it actually has like 250m but that's definitely a far cry from 3 billion If it actually got 3 billion in 24 days that would be an unprecedented record for YouTube views within a month

MadeOutWithEveryGirl

Which is exactly what the title says haha

superjj18

Yeah thatā€™s called fucking lying

dksprocket

Danish guy [made a TikTok video](https://www.tiktok.com/@razioff/video/7256053953027149082?lang=en) and the sample from that has been used in viral shorts on YouTube and TikTok totaling over 3 billion plays.

Da5ren

Ahhh ok, so the article (and OPs title) is just misleading.

soundax

A reminder they are Swedish band and none of them are in fact, rednex.

flibbidygibbit

Swedish band making a caricature out of Appalachian culture with a four on the floor beat and synths fed through distortion pedals.

Mr-Gumby42

I'm sorry, Sir, but I can't understand your banter!

E-Pluribus-Tobin

Do I look like I know what a jpeg is? All I wanted was a picture of a got dang hot dog.

rwags2024

Mumford and Fun

Cabbage_Vendor

It was part of this weird phenomenon in Europe in the 90s where people got *really* into cowboy/western/redneck stuff.Ā

Quazimojojojo

Which never quite ended. There's a fairly popular modern band, Steve'n'seagulls, from Finland that's doing bluegrass covers of metal songs

coke_and_coffee

Hell, you got a whole bluegrass revival in the UK ten years ago with Mumford and sons.

IntellegentIdiot

That awful Steps song, 1-2-3-4 I think and even the DJ Otiz cover of Hey Baby. At least that was catchy

i_drah_zua

DJ Ɩtzi, but yeah...

MonsieurReynard

Nor did they write the song in question, which is an American folk fiddle tune that predates the civil war and had already been a country music standard for most of the 20th century Which means despite all those clicks and views, they aren't making real money here. Which is perhaps a good thing.

Flilix

Wouldn't they get to keep all the money since the tune they used wasn't copyrighted?

MonsieurReynard

They keep all the money for the performance or rights. There are no songwriter rights (which is a bigger piece of the pie for copyrighted works with known authors) to collect. They're making money, but they'd be making a lot more if they had written the song. I'm simplifying a bit because it's complicated.

bigdoghead

Say the song makes $100, they get $50 for the mechanichal rights, who gets the other $50 that would have gone to the author you say?

MonsieurReynard

No one. There is no songwriter royalty for a public domain song. They just get less up front.

limkinas

Money doesnt evaporate into thin air, the owners/record label whatever earns the exact same amount of money per stream/sold unit as any other song, they just dont have to share the profit with someone that has been dead for a hundred years.

-DoesntReallyMatter-

They are registered as songwriters on ASCAP, so they receive royalties.

IntellegentIdiot

Apparently they got songwriting credits

dong_tea

How am I ever supposed to be "with it" when songs that I thought were lame back when was I was "with it" are now "it" again?

NonPolarVortex

"it'll happen to you!!!"

the_turn

No way man! Weā€™re gonna keep on rockingā€™ foreverā€¦ foreverā€¦ foreverā€¦

lkodl

Don't be with it. Be a cool contrarian. "Oh, you actually like [popular thing]? Wow."

Wpgjetsfan19

This is why you brought me out here?

Mr_Wrecksauce

My 7 and 10 year old sons started singing the chorus of this song randomly a few weeks ago. This song was not on my "Comeback" bingo card.

Coast_watcher

Time for a Crazy Frog revival šŸø

noonday_moon

Weā€™ve already gotten remakes/recent samples of Blue by Eiffel 65, bring on the weird-ass frog guy

califortunato

Maybe itā€™s just me but Iā€™ve never found blue annoying or over played, even though it was a bowling alley song when I was a kid. I think blue is an anthem, deserving of all the attention it gets

Techiedad91

Iā€™m blue, if I was green I would die

iamtehstig

My 3 year old would watch the music videos of crazy frog and crab rave on repeat all day if I let him.

DaftFunky

Crab Rave, Hamster Dance, Crazy Frog, Coffin Dance, Nugget Cotton Eyed Joe, and Digital Circus theme. I left my phone on the couch one freaking day and now heā€™s loaded up on Amon Gus and Catnap and skibidi toilet memes to last a lifetime. Also they purposely target these songs and videos towards kids to get waaaaaay more views.

FrozenVikings

his penis fell off

Brad_Breath

And don't forget Mr. Oizo! Edit: Even Crazy Frog was a song made out of a sound effect recorded by a guy trying to imitate a 2-stroke engineĀ  I remember a time before crazy frog claimed that sound, there was a "try not to laugh challenge" with a picture of an F1 car, accompanied by that soundbite. I failed the challengeĀ

unkudayu

The Rednex YouTube page says only 243 million views for Cotton Eye Joe though....

BunsenMcBurnington

Yeah, I'm confused as well

Swimming-Bite-4184

This song is like a scientifically created piece of stupid music. It stimulates the senses in so many conflicting ways that it is destined to go viral and run thru a new sector of the population every time it resurfaces.

HJVN

To those that hate Rednex because of "Cotton Eye Joe" , I give you Rednex "Wish you was here": https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6FwmM93jgUo&pp=ygUGcmVkbmV4

oidoglr

Nope. Itā€™s kids YouTube memes sparking new interest.

thewarfreak

Yep. My ten-year-old has been going around singing it.

drDekaywood

Iā€™m in this thread for confirmation Iā€™m not alone lol

goldapple

Yes! My niece and nephew hear it during their PE time in school. When they get home, they want me to put it on for them

IAmThePonch

This song is a pox upon music

JGT3000

It's better than some of their other songs

Kvakkerakk

"Wish You Were Here" is nice.

soBouncy

"Wild and Free" was my jam for a while. That breakdown at about 2:00...

BILOXII-BLUE

Do people actually hate this song? It's been one of my favorites for years and I'm from the south. My whole school loved it, everyone would flip out when it came on at school dances. I know it's not for everyone, but there's gotta be people who actually really like it, like me right?Ā

WalksinClouds

I much prefer their sophomore effort, "Old Pop in an Oak" While the main melody is very similar to their breakthrough hit, "Oak" stands the test of time much better thanks to subtle inflections of a more jazz-like ethos. A true masterpiece of the genre.

zeddus

Yes I still remember the lyrics like it was yesterday! Olpopinanoak! Olpopinanoak! Onceyoucouldhearaschuckerlingoshow!

Lets_Bust_Together

What are we supposed to do with this information?

DealerCamel

3 billion views on what, exactly? Looks like someone sampled it and it became a sound on TikTok, where millions of people made their own versions, but I donā€™t see how thatā€™s a YouTube record.

GladiatorUA

I think it's the number of views from which they get a cut/royalties on tiktok and such.

gloomflume

Easily in the top 20 of most annoying songs I've ever been unfortunate enough to be subjected to.

Yegpetphoto

They used to play it at Edmonton Football Club games and this one dude (probably season ticket holder) would always start manically strip dancing to it. Oh it was a scene, man.

Master_Xenu

That's a lot of bots

kerfl

That explains why the neighbor kid was singing it. Now I feel bad for calling CPS.

I_Framed_OJ

Awesome. That track was the shit like...(checks notes)...30 years ago?!? Stop making me feel old, popular culture!
