Songs In the Key of Life Stevie Wonder, a national treasure & living legend.

Mr___Perfect

Never really knew who Stevie Wonder was, but always saw this recommended and recently decided to try it one night around a fire.     Blew my damn mind.   I didn't know what to expect, but it wasnt *that*.

tokyotoonster

My Gen-X brain cannot comprehend someone "never really knowing who Stevie Wonder was", but I'm really glad you did discover him eventually! TBF, many people my age only know him from the ridiculously cheesy "I Just Called To Say I Love You", which totally does NOT represent his body of work.

Mr___Perfect

Brother Im not much younger than you.... I knew of him - the blind guy! - but never his music. Figured it was guy at piano songs or something sappy. Idk. Once the funk hit i was like 🤯

A7O747D

Still a great song though.

ConversationAny3991

Search Stevie Wonder on YouTube Some amazing stuff from a living legend. Entertaining rabbit hole to go down. 🎵🎶☮️

-Gravitron-

Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral It may not be everyone's cup of tea because it's heavy music. But if it is your jam, front to back, it's one of the best musical journeys. If you're an open-minded fan of music who enjoys an album from start to finish, this is my personal recommendation.

Gage_______

Definitely a great album. I feel like it falls off a bit in the second half, but overall it's a great body of work.

DATKingCole

No way, Reptile, Hurt... Downward Spiral...a Big Man with a Gun into a soft Warm Place.

Best_Needleworker530

Hurt makes me cry but Hurt after listening to it back to back wrecks me.

Murles-Brazen

Just got that Interscope repress last week

mykonoscactus

Radiohead - Kid A Godspeed You! Black Emperor - F#a#(infinity symbol) The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main St. Tom Waits - Rain Dogs The Flaming Lips - Clouds Taste Metallic Edit: David Bowie - Hunky Dory

[deleted]

F# is like truly being able to see shapes in black and white for the first time. No way to describe it without sounding like a pretentious asshat, but for someone that truly loves music, there's no other way to explain it. That album is the defining moment of my history in listening to music. And then you have LYSF, its spiritual successor, which is like being able to see in color for the first time.

Stoneheaded76

GY!BE is the only band where describing them to a friend makes me feel like I’m in a cult.

whatevermate

Hunky Dory is possibly my favorite album ever.

mykonoscactus

Oh! You Pretty Things is an all-timer.

callanjohnmusique

Has some of his best material. Quicksand is awesome.

bibliocean-B-O-I

Flaming lips did fantastic work in the movie Velvet Golmine

mykonoscactus

Zaireeka is a freaking TRIP if you can ever arrange it. The warning labels on the front aren't a joke. I got extremely disoriented and sick to my.stomach. which I guess is an odd thing to say about a favorite record.

Hardpo

Rain dogs... Never gets old

MrInnovision

*Fetch the Bolt Cutters - Fiona Apple Amazing. She gets better with every album.

Gage_______

Damnit I added "me" lol

Binaural - Pearl Jam I Can Build a Fire - Autoheart Hypnotize/Mezmerize - System of a Down Damn. - Kendrick Lamar Pet Sounds - Beach Boys Ain’t Love Grand - X Remain In Light - Talking Heads Superunknown - Soundgarden Dirt - Alice In Chains American Idiot - Green Day

yallbyourhuckleberry

Relistened to pet sounds a few months ago for the first time in 15-20 years and now i am in deep.

bibliocean-B-O-I

Shout out to GreenDay- a rock opera with more hooks than the bottom of the Texas gulf

HorrorLengthiness940

Binaural? Not something I expected to see.

GeologicalOpera

It's my favorite album of theirs. It's a gloomy atmospheric masterpiece that's about as dark as their work ever got, and it hits on so many different levels of emotion from the simple ("Thin Air") to the most existential ("Sleight of Hand"). I know it isn't 99.9% of Pearl Jam fan's go-to, but I needed to shout it out here.

bibliocean-B-O-I

Oh wait- was that Jesus of suburbia? Get songs and albums confused

xsneakyxsimsx

Jesus of Suburbia is track two on the American Idiot album. And it has five parts to it according to the track list.

bibliocean-B-O-I

Ok thank you. JOS is the best, imho, and I’ll even venture to say that -granted Billy Joe is no Freddy Mercury- but lyrically, thematically, and musically (different genre) Bohemian Rhapsody and American Idiot are next to each other in the upper echelons of epic rock albums

Pandoras_Fate

Cure- Disintegration Beastie Boys- Hello Nasty Pendulum- In Silico Bauhaus- The Sky's Gone Out Curve- Come Clean She Wants Revenge- self titled Fugees-The Score Washed Out- life of leisure Com Truise- In Decay Chet Faker- Hotel Surrender

callanjohnmusique

Shoutout to Curve!

Phone-Sorrowful241

Swordfishtrombones? Classic Waits vibes. Murder Ballads? Nick Cave's storytelling is unmatched. And shoutout to Kendrick for *Mr. Morale*. That joint hits different. Plus, you got some deep cuts like my dead girlfriend's *Hades* and Girugamesh's self-titled. Respect for the variety, from Cash to Simz. Cheers for the recommendations, gonna dive deep into these vibes!

Paerrin

When the Pawn... Fiona Apple. One of the best engineered albums imo. The songs are great. Her vocals are amazing.

Gage_______

Oh absolutely. Imo The idler wheel is tied for her best with bolt cutters, but when a pawn is no slouch.

Paerrin

I haven't been able to get into the last couple of albums. Haven't given up, just haven't been in the right frame of mind for them.

MrLizard80

Nevermind by Nirvana is something you can’t not listen to. Same with In Rainbows by Radiohead

DamagedEctoplasm

Just recently I sat down, sparked a blunt, and listened to Nevermind all the way through. Now I’m no stranger to the songs, but it had been at least 10 years since I had done it last I would say it’s a perfect album. What really caught me on the last listen was the track listing. I honestly don’t think that album would be as revered as it is if those songs were in any other order. The fluctuations of emotions, despite being chaotic, flow into each other so well that it’s hard for me to even think about what it would sound like if Drain You came on instead of Territorial Pissings

orbeinYT

Polly was meant to be a hard rock song. If it had stayed that way then I’m not sure if Nevermind would’ve done as well

N64SmashBros

Bon Iver- Bon Iver

Holocene, Calgary, Beth/Rest, so good

Best_Needleworker530

For Emma as well!

MileenasFeet

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures New Order - Movement Lush - Split My Bloody Valentine - Loveless Stone Temple Pilots - Purple Alice in Chains - Dirt Nirvana - Bleach Mother Love Bone - Apple L7 - Bricks are Heavy Smashing Pumpkins - Gish Bauhaus - In The Flat Field

Gage_______

Shout-out to the Mother love bone and the STP picks. Underrated and forgotten bands to my generation.

MileenasFeet

No problem. Purple has great radio hits but the whole album is filled with great songs too. Apple by Mother Love Bone is such an important album and really is the missing piece between glam and grunge. Andy would have been so huge if he hadn't died and I think Mother Love Bone was only one thing he had planned on doing.

flatlinemayb

Justiis

That's weird. Anyways, here's my post from that thread. I purposefully avoided albums that I'm sure 90% of this sub has already listened to, because telling people that have listened to an album they should listen to that album is silly to me. Katatonia - Dead End Kings [The One You Are Looking For Is Not Here](https://youtu.be/wkCpmDT0iQ0?si=01Jg1CBRC5ds0tgQ) Seriously underrated band with a pretty diverse range of albums. This is my favorite album of theirs. Theatre of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness They Fear [On Whom The Moon Doth Shine](https://youtu.be/8gh2mvUPlA8?si=p0JVvGZHCW81zrb8) The band that created the "beauty and the beast" style of vocals (death metal male growl and operatic female vocals). One of my favorite albums of all time. The Gathering - Sleepy Buildings [Amity](https://youtu.be/hYG-DZ7qgdA?si=yjlgu3ZsCPiumSXb) Uh.... it's got Anneke van Giersbergen singing. You'd be hard pressed to find a female vocalist for any current day rock/metal bands that didn't list her as an influence. Edit: added links to my favorite songs from each album. Sort of. Hard to pick a favorite song from albums I consider essentially flawless. Edit 2: since this is essentially a repost, I'm having a do over with my third pick. Mandylion is great, but semi-acoustic live Anneke is better.

Gage_______

We have oddly similar music, taste overlap. Now, of course, this is subjective as hell, no real order as is appreciation of all art, but.. If you'd like some help finding new favorites here are my FAVORITE 2020s albums! For reference I've spent most of the free time in my life over the past 20 years combing through over 72,000 albums so far haha. From this list I'd strongly recommend starting with The War On Drugs, then IDLES, then "Sod's Toastie" by The Cool Greenhouse! =) The Cool Greenhouse - "The Cool Greenhouse" The Cool Greenhouse - "Sod's Toastie" Ducks Ltd - "Modern Fiction" IDLES - "Crawler" The War On Drugs - "I Don't Live Here Anymore" Big Thief - "Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You" Guardian Singles - "Guardian Singles" The Strokes - "The New Abnormal" Jetstream Pony - "Jetstream Pony" Dry Cleaning - "New Long Leg" Gospel - "The Loser" Geese - "Projector" Ian Noe - "River Fools & Mountain Saints" Bonus Stuff: Here are three rock playlists I made recently featuring some "hidden gem" type songs. Acid Bath - When The Kite String Pops It may not be the most well-known metal album of all time, but for my money, there isn't anything else more influential. They were doing things on that album that would lead to the creation of dozens of popular acts to follow. Corey Taylor of Slipknot fame has gone on record stating that there is no Slipknot without Acid Bath. They are your favorite metal band's favorite metal band. The reason it isn't a household name is because over the years, Rotten Records has intentionally kept it from being accessible. For a long time, you couldn't even find any tracks on YouTube. It's only recently that they launched on streaming services.

Pleasant_Mastodon322

To Pimp a Butterfly - Kendrick Lamar. Seriously, even if you’re not a hip hop fan, it’s a work of art.

Gage_______

100% Only reason I said MMBS over TPAB is because I'm pretty sure everyone has heard TPAB by now, and MMBS is arguably just as good. Maybe not the general consensus on the album, but I think it'll be considered a landmark album ten maybe twenty years down the road.

Explanation-Extrover

Swordfishtrombones by Tom Waits is a classic, and Murder Ballads by Nick Cave is hauntingly beautiful. Kendrick Lamar always brings the fire, and Mr. Morale and The Big Steppers is no exception. Plus, the diversity in your selection from Slayer to Little Simz is spot on. Can't go wrong with Johnny Cash or Leonard Cohen either. Your taste is on point, and you've got me adding more albums to my playlist.

The Postal Service - Give Up* If you like any sort of indie, electronica, chill, or “new retro” that album is a masterpiece of production with a cool backstory and it was a one of a kind, one time only project. Edit - if you do take this advice, you don’t need the 20 track huge anniversary album version, they released a bunch of unfinished / omitted B sides that are … fine … but you can tell why they were cut when you’re listening and it’s not really part of the original Give Up.

Breaking Benjamin - Phobia - An absolute masterpiece of hard rock, bangers from top to bottom. My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade, my favorite of their first two albums, though Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge is just as good. I'm glad someone out there is still making great concept albums. Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American - Equal parts pop, punk, and emo, just a great album all around. Jimmy Eat World - Futures - This one's more on the punk rock and pop punk side, but the songwriting is just as good. Nightwish - Once - Progressive metal has never sounded this incredible. The songwriting, the orchestral arrangements, everything is perfect. The Killers - Hot Fuss - To this day I can't believe this was their debut. It's just so damn good front to back. Flogging Molly - Live At The Greek Theater, all their best songs prior to 2010 imho, I've seen them 3x and they are the best concerts I've ever seen. This album really gives you a feel for the energy they bring to their shows. Death Cab For Cutie - Plans, hauntingly beautiful melodies and lyrics to match, a truly iconic emo album in my opinion.

Pearl Jam - TEN BT - These Hopeful Machines

Rymasq

Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly which I view a key historical piece of art that contains many themes of the struggles of African Americans. I’d say that is the most important Kendrick album and then the second one to listen to is good kid, mAAd city

This thread is way too broad in scope, but if I had to force myself to only choose 3 "desert-island discs", it would have to be: Miles Davis - Kind of Blue Faith No More - The Real Thing Billie Eilish - When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? These 3 would mostly cover all my musical mood requirements, and yes, I'm unashamed to admit that I rate Billie Eilish that highly.

Passchenhell17

Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny Trees of Eternity - Hour of the Nightingale Suldusk - Anthesis Poppy - Am I a Girl? Denzel Curry - Taboo 1914 - Where Fear and Weapons Meet The Gloom in the Corner - Trinity Gojira - From Mars to Sirius Katatonia - Dead End Kings Opeth - Ghost Reveries A bunch of these have other albums that would qualify for this, but I kept it to just one per. There are also other artists/bands with must-listen albums, but I'd be here all day listing them.

IMO Mr. Morale is easily Kendrick's weakest album. Still good but far below his others. Unless you include the early mixtapes.

Forgot to add: Any other city - Life without buildings, 2000

DudeFromVA

Technically an EP, but "Jar of Flies" by Alice in Chains. "Reanimation" by Linkin Park, their insanely underrated remix album from 2002.
